BRANDENBOURG GATES

The World Warhas finished! I am standing with a submachine gun at the threshold of a new era and thinking:

whata mighty gloomy force we've managed to beat, curse it!

The troops are passing in frontof me -they are my comrades. I give them way,

standing like commander, though I am neithera general, nora marshal of course -

I am a common sergeant Ivan Orliuk, collective farmerfrom Naddniprianschyna (Trans-Dnipro Region),

so to say, an ordinary winner in the World War.

But, as faras the numberof ourcomrades being fallen in battles for liberation from fascism

is higherthan the numberof victims of any othersoldiers throughoutthe world, - tremendous, I would say, number, -

and I myselfhave shed enemy's blood and suffered quite a lotof difficulties,

being a person born forgood, so I need to introduce myself somehow to my contemporaries,

friends and enemies of the whole world, togetherwith my wife, with my motherand father,

with the whole home, as they say, with the well, I drank water from once,

with the garden, vegetable garden, were I experienced first callosities on my hands, -

in a word, with all my family and fortune.

Oleksandr Dovzhenko

OHRONIOLE OF FLAMING AGES

- Ah-a-a... a-a-a-a-a...

Atfall night of the year 1941 farewell spirits stretched overthe Dnipro.

Fathers and mothers weresaying good-bye to theirchildren, husbands to theirwives, brothers to theirsisters.

Two loves departed, two hopes departed. The might-have-been marriage, unrealized maternity

weresaying good-bye.

Itwas windy thatnight. Thedisturbing clouds were floating in the skies from the West, from German direction, thesmell of dead bodies and fire was felt.

They were saying good-bye in haste and, restraining wrench, left fastly,as if in pursuit of

their uncommon destinies.

That night nobody new the size of the coming events. Northe main characterof ourchronicle Ivan Orliuk knew this.

He justfelt, outgoing towards the Westwith his regiment,

thatgreattimes had come. And he was keeping silence under the influence of unusualness of the feeling.

- Oh God, forbid my son-a warrior to fall into death's hands.

His name is Ivan, my fortune, Ivan Orliuk, and I am his mother!

I stay atdawns and night falls, spelling the roads.

I stand atmidnightovertheabyss of grief, if only he wouldn't been defeated by any sword,

any fire, any waters, my son, my defender!..

- Theaccused Ivan Orliuk, during arrest this item has been found. What is this?

Answer, what is this?

- Soil. -Which soil? - Ukrainian.

- So. Were you a memberof the Komsomol (Young Oommunist League)? - But I am a memberof the Komsomol.

- Let it be. And what is this for?

- I took this to keep in memory Ukraine, when we were leaving it. At night,

atearly dawn, one woman was crying and saying that that was the end of Ukraine, well, the boundary, so to say, the verge.

- So? - So, I then stepped back aside, lowered on my knees and said: "Farewell to you, Ukraine!''

- What else did you say? - Nothing more.

Let me recollect... Itseems to me that itwas all.

- So. Continue. You may continue to tell us your biography, but beshort.

- So I tell you thatwhen we weregathering in hayfield, we were walking around stacks on seeds.

Forall my childhood I was walking on seeds. They were everywhere, wherever you might turn:

in the pots, in the bundles, on the poles in inner porch (siniah), in a shed under roof, in barrels, in sacks, in little sacks.

I often slept in seeds - in the rye, the milletand peas on the furnace. I like thesmell of seeds.

I grew up in seeds... and my mothergave me life in seeds as well -while harvest time under the haycock.

- Enough. - But this is very important! I will explain it to you!

- You'd bettertell us aboutyourcrime atonce, how you killed two yourcomrades?..

- ...Who, evidently, grew among seeds as well.

- But I told them: you mustn't think in such a mean way. That is, I thoughtso.

- What exactly? -Well, aboutwhat they spoke of. - But you had not any right to shootthem.

- No, I didn't. - So, you own yourguilt? -No, I explained you... what I say? I...

- Answerthequestions exactly. Did you kill?

- I shootthem! Before the shooting I asked permission. -Whose permission you asked?

- Captain's Kravchyna. -Captain Kravchyna did not have the right to permit.

- And he didn'tpermit. The mine blown up and he fell down injured. And then I shoot them myself.

- Nobody gave you the right to do this. Why you do notown guiltofkilling two yourcomrades?

- My hearthas gone mad!.. -Answer: yes or no?

- I... I can'tsay it. - You stand in front of Military Tribunal.

You will be shootdown!

- I will tell you. -Tell.

- At that moment I also noticed a little of theirfeeling in myself.

As if it flew over theair to me,

and this hurt me somehow, and I gotangry.

And there were no time to think any longer. And then,

there has leftso little of soil, you see?..

- So... And whatdid you say?

- I said: Good-bye Ukraine, death to Nazi occupants, and some more words.

- And after that?-Then we took this.

Then I saw thatthey threw it in such a way...

I then said them, all in all, we began to speak, and I understood

that I eitherwill shoot these skunks or my oath will not be worth a pin and I will not return home.

That is why on the second night, when fascists broke through, I saw them on theirway to the village, they hided in a haystack, so than I rushed to my gun.

- Stop where you stay, - I say, - Betrayers and cowards of Fatherland!!!

- My dear, as thedefenderof the Fatherland and a Oommunist, and a judge, I ask you to realize properly what I will say to you:

even if you were my only son, you would go...

- In penal company! At least three days I will fight, please! - Three days. And then death?

- Please! - You are a stupid man! You have thesurname of an eagle, and the stupid brains.

You've gone not faraway from those fools whom you shot... No, my dear...

- Comrade... - Wait. -Comrade judge!..

- Attention! Air!

- As for theseeds, you've said good things. I believe thatsooner orlater you, Orliuk,

will sow these seeds somewherealong Dnipro... - So, I didn't offend you by seeds?

- By seeds? No. -I like sowing so much!

I like to plough, to mow, to thresh, butmostof all I like to sow,

to plant, to grow, to make things sprout. At that moment I have a hundred of hands and I have such a magic touch, comrades judges!

Sometimes itdidn'tyield anywhere better than in that place where I sew. I wasgiven a medal on the show.

You know, I studied to be an agronomist... There they go!..

They're coming! Ours are coming! I am so envious of pilots! I didn't manage to become a pilot...

- Fireat me! Fire at me! The enemy is close! I am "a swallow", I am "a swallow"! Fire at me! Fire at me!

- Fireat me! Fire at me! The enemy is close! I am "a swallow", I am "a swallow"! Fire at me! Fire at me!

Fireat me! I am "a swallow''! Do it! Do it! Fire atme! Fire at me! I am "a swallow"! Do it!

- Fireat me! I am "a swallow". Do it! Fascists are near... do it, do it!..

- Fire! Fire!

- Listen to my order!

- Do it! I am "a swallow"! Fascists are near! Do it! I am "a swallow"!

Do it! Damn it!

- We do it! Run away, whilesafe! Fire!

- Battery, stand up foraction! Fire againstthe enemy! Fire! - Ah-a...

- Tanks! Dubrovin, ourtanks!..

- Ivanochku, has returned!

- Ivanochku, tell us something!

Why you'redressed in such a white shirt?

- Because I proceed to the second grade today.

-But there is the warthere, where you've returned from. - There's the war, mother. There is everything there. The whole world, and you can see it!

- Is it in fire? - Itis in fire, mother, and itseems to be in fire for the nextone hundred years.

- Ivan! Ivanochku! Ivanochko has returned!

- Ivan! Is it you, our Ivan?

- I am losing consciousness... Uliano!

- Is ityou, Ivan? - I am alive! -Wearealive! An ordinary wound... ooh! Two of them! Now, hold it! Block up the blood!

- Don't leave me, Stepan! - I can't hear! I am deaf!

- Don't letme lay down on the ground! Keep me on my legs! - And you resist, trample itdown. - I'm trampling itdown. Oh, Styopa, I'm trampling it down!

- Trample it down,do notgive up. Trample it down! And we will show who we areagain. Believe my Russian word!

- Achtung!

School headmaster Vasyl Makarovych Riasnyi was not an ordinary teacher.

The enlightenment of people was the hereditary activity of his family.

Portraits of Chernyshevskiy, Pisarev, Dobrolyubov, Ushinskiy, Shevchenko,

on which the whole generations of teachers were brought up,

these portraits were honoured in his house togetherwith portraits of Marx and Lenin.

Being exiled on thestatus of unbeaten by Hetman outfrom Ukraine in nineteen eighteen,

Yevhen Hrybovskyi became known to counter intelligence services of many countries.

''Commercial travellerof a terror", as he was called in appropriate circles,

he bred hate towards the governmentof his own nation, dreaming, like maniac, about a campaign against Ukraine.

He was a ''minus person"already, German fascists did not believe to any of his words

and they disregarded him as a human sweeping.

- ...the Duke Sviatoslav walked lightly, like panther. He never took with him

any carts in campaigns, hedidn'tboil meat...

- Achtung!

- butwhen killing horse-flesh, oranimal-flesh, or beef, he baked iton the coals. He didn't have any tent, any bed.

-This is my daughter,

(In German).

Mr. Commissar, please, enter next classroom.

(In German).

- Continue, Mr. Oommissarwould like to listen to yourlecture.

- Continue!

- The Duke Sviatoslav neverattacked his enemies without declaring war.

Being noble and real Slavonian, healways warned about his campaign: ''I wantto take the field againstyou".

Hegrew up right here, were wedid... Overthere, behind the mountain, in Vyshhorod, his mother Olga lived.

Here, behind the window, where Troian's housestands, his horses pastured,

as horses ofhis fatherand grandfathera thousand years ago.

(In German).

- ...When in nine hundred seventy two the Pechenizki hordes surrounded the hero-dukealong Dnipro thresholds,

and he saw that there were no way out,

but hestill found way outfor him and his retinue.

When everybody was wounded, and theirswords became blunt, and grief already appealed to run away from battlefield,

he said: "Warriors, let us notshame Rus land,

letus fall in battle here. The dead do notfeel shame".

(Translates into German).

- And then his warriors answered: ''Our Duke, where you will give up your life...

- we will also give up our lives there!''

- Death to fascistoccupants? Was? Sehrgut!

-Stand up! -Achtung!

- Stand up!

- Mr. Commissar, it is justa lesson! It is a lesson on ourancient history!

(Translates into German).

(In German).

- You will havea lesson of a newhistory.

(In German).

- I respectfeminity,

(In German).

though you deservea bulletora rope according to laws of empire.

(In German).

- I do not need yourpardon.

(In German).

- Mr. Commissar...

(In German).

- All of us are memberof Komsomol here! -It's not true, I am not! You have no right to say so!

Uliana Vasylivna, Uliana Vasylivna! Tell them that I am nota memberof Komsomol!

- You? Oertainly no. No, no... How you can be a memberof Komsomol!

(In German).

- It doesn't matterfor Mr. Oommissarwhetheryou are Komsomol members or not. All of you will go to Germany today.

- Butwe are studying.

(Translates into German).

(In German).

- You will notstudy. You will work. It is stupid to study in a village.

- But, wait!.. It is impossible, there is a mistake! I don't believe! Germany of G๏ฟฝte, Schiller!..

- Leave it! Itis tactless. Threegroups of the youngestwill be left togetherwith teacher Mandryka.

- Mandryka? No, no, this is beyond belief.

- Achtung! -I beg you, translate to him. Mr. Commissar, you were informed incorrectly.

Ourvillage is notsuch as you think about it. In the years of Soviet power

a lotof intellectual were brought up here-engineers, teachers, doctors...

- ...Scientists!

- Scientists, chemists, agronomists...

- You have to understand, you see, in our...

(In German).

- We are not yourvisitors, you areours. - No, you do not understand, what are you saying. You area fool!

- Don't say these words.

(In German).

- I told that they will not go to Germany.

(In German).

- No, no, this was me, who told this!

(In German).

- It's not true! Vasyl Markovych did not tell this! He slanders himself.

(In German).

- You must realize that you've been beaten. The Commissarsays thatyou have to be

careful with yourexpressions. You may be punished...

- You are lying! -What? -I told that he may consider himself be hanged, and you may regard yourself demoted.

Kurbatskyi! ...Beat!

- Don't touch! Don'ttouch!

- What?

- Comrades! Let's run! - Do you here? Where to run?!

- They encircled the building! - In any case, we have to break-through!

- Waitwith beating, Cain! Let me thank the hangman fora rope.

Don't be afraid, I will nothityou... - Don'tapproach to me! Listen!

- No, you listen! Listen and keep in mind the place you came to.

- I have won... - No! It only seems to you. -You areabsurd.

- I am free. Can you hearme? Translate him, you scoundrel, correctly! I am free! I and my nation!

- I will annihilate half off your nation! -And another partwill eliminate you.

- I will kill you! -I know that. Butyou will also die here. And before dying

you would curse the one who turned you on the way of death.

Oh, don't trouble yourself, you will notoffend me. I despise you so much,

and to show you this, I spitupon yourface in frontof children.

- I will hang you! -Impale him!

- Let it beso, give me fame by horror,

this is an old Ukrainian death! Are you shivering?

Uliana has disappeared somewhere. They said afterwards, that when she was brought to commandant's office

fora questioning, she, like obeying the inspiration, which comes to each man once in his life,

killed two Gestapo officers and two soldiers.

They also told as if she hid herself at Doctor's Vyrskyi, and doctordisfigured herface

by horrible lichen, and covered herarms with rash,

so that nobody could neither recognize her, nor take her by hand.

- I took partin attacks so many times, and alwaysfelt nothing more butirritation and evil.

Hairsfreeze on the head, the tonguedoes not obey, stone images press you into the ground,

and theground shakes and moves, and pulls you, pulls, pulls! And how you could stand up from it if you are in a sound mind!..

Then such a second comes, when one man of the company,

being itthat man or me,jumps up with swearwords forthe whole world... - Right!

- To Hitler, a scoundrel! - ...and not"hurray"is heard already, butsomething mixed -a roar.

- Right! -And the whole Russia lays behind you, and you can hearstern words: ''Stand up! Go ahead!"

- Why you rooted to the ground? Go ahead! Don't loose a second! Don't loose a second!

- One, two! Took!

- Took!

- Ah...a!..

- ...Kill! Kill! Kill! Herr Berlin! Broadcasts Berlin...

Heil, Heil, Heil! I give order not to take guerrilla and all those who interactwith them

as prisoners and not to shoot them, butonly hang them.

- Oh, oh... - Well done! This is a real warrior, indeed! He is alive! Underchloroform and knifegives the signals!

- ...Transmits New-York, transmits New-York... We are fond of you for the victims.

We appreciate your heroism... Each ourchild is fond of you!

Butstill remember, the Nazi areas cruel, as treacherous.

They are trying already to arouse a dislike towards us, saying

that wespare ourblood and do not spare yours...

Transmits New-York, transmits New-York! - Stand up forwar, god damn it!..

Ah-ah!.. -Be alive, my dear! Let you bealive till one hundred years!.. A bandage!

- Moscow transmits! Brothers and sisters! In this tremendous struggle of two worlds,

the destiny of humanity is decided. Itis being decided whether ourculture will continue to develop

or it will perish togetherwith us, whether Ukraine will remain free Soviet Republic

or it will vanish from the face of theearth and turn into Hitler colony forever...

- I take command! - No, I am sorry, but I command here!

Then keep it! So... Next one! - I take command!

Follow me! Go forward! Hurray!..

- Hur-ra-a-ay...

Hur-ra-a-ay!

THE SEOOND FLAMING SUMMER HAS PASSED.

- I am sleepy, where you pull! Alive! putme back!

They were lying on the furnace - Demyd and Tetiana Orliuks. The old furnace did not heat already.

The whole village up to the riverwas burnt down, and Zarichia (the otherside of a river) wasfull of occupants.

- He-e-e-elp!..

- We are Germans now already, so we are, and ourchildren got into trouble.

They will wanderforeign states.

- What are you talking aboutDemyd?! There will not be any Germany here.

- Indeed? Well, thank you. - Everything will pass by. Itwill pass in fuss like snowstorm.

- Is this you, Tetiana? - Me, Demyd, I am Tetiana. Do you feel unwell?

- Sing me, Tetiana, a Christmas carol. - Christmas carol?

- Indeed, may be I am dying. I want to sleepso much. And here the Christmas is already, theguests will come, Ivan with the girls. Ah?

Ivan!.. Sing me aboutour Ivan!

- About Ivan? Good, Demyd...

- "Brave fellow Ivanochko... knocked the gates out, - the Holy Evening!

Oh, knocked thegates out into anotherlands, - the Holy Evening!

- Orliuk! - Orliuk!

- Seniorsergeant Orliuk on yourorder!

- Did you receive the task? -Yes, general.

- This task, Orliuk, is of exceptional importance. Itssuccess will be not only ourvictory,

itwill allow to save thousands of people. Tomorrow we will loose near...

All right, I won't foretell. All in all, much will depend on the success of your reconnaissance facts.

Did you understand? -Yes, general!

- I entrusted itto you. -The orderwill be... fulf... - Wait.

First term is that you must carry out this orderwith yoursection rightnow.

Operate with knife, bayonet, whateverwith, butwithoutany shot, any cry. Understood?

Afull, so to say, chemical silence.

Oapture a prisonerforinterrogation. -Yes, Sir!

- And one more thing. I give you an orderto return alive.

- Yes, Sir: to carry outquietly and to capture a prisonerfor interrogation!

- That is all. -Allow me to start fulfilling the task? - Go!

- Sergeant Orliuk! - Orliuk!

- Yes, sergeant Orliuk!

- Do you remember me?

- Yes. -And you recognized me atonce?-Yes, Sir.

- And why didn't you tell me?- It's my fault, general. - It is bad, butstill?

- I scolded you greatly atthat time. - Foul language?- I used everything.

- Well done!.. He carries a wounded division commander, and abuses him with obscene words all five kilometres!

-This is my fault, general. I didn't see who that man wasat that moment. I could see only one of our personnel. -And started to scold?

- No, you started to cry and scold, and then I realized thatyou could drown me in your nervous condition.

- So?- I hityou... on your head to make you fall asleep. -What you hit me with? -With my fist, whatelse.

- And I fell asleep?- Right! -Well done!.. Swam across with me? -Yes, Sir. Then carried on myself.

And aftercrossing the riverwe were both carrying you. That fellow, who helped me later, lieutenant,

hesaid thathe was yourson.

- Vitaliy? -Yes, Sir. -Vitaliy is not alive already, Orliuk...

Very well, thank you forever, brother. As they say mountains nevercome together...

- ...but peoplecome together, general. Allow me to fulfil the task?

- Go soldier, carry out yourduty!

- "...Am I finished now or not? Finished or not?

No! I am very young and for me itis more natural to think about enemy's death.

And on the whole, I may think only about the good, I saw a good dream...

Alittle bit to the right, aha, to the right...

So, only about the good!.. I kill them, I may think about this.

I imagine this exactly... I look on my watch:

twelve o'clock... Happy New Year, citizens of the whole world! New happiness to you!.."

- "...They write. You can writeeverything: it is luck to die during the battle. Whata luck?

I do not wantsuch a luck! You'd bettergive me makhorka as much as my heartdesires.

And without makhorka I am not a warrior, damned Hitler, Heringh, Hebbels, Ribbentrop and the whole fascism...

Or they give vodka -one hundred grammes! Is thatgood? You'd bettergive me once in three days,

so that I could feel itand experience myself!..

And there is a snowstorm here, forgive me my God!.. So, where are you, fascistscums, where?.."

- "...Oh, the wind, the wind, the luck fora soldier, shield me againstenemy with a snowstorm!

Hard and awful I creep towards hated goal.

Yes orno, yes or no? Yes! I move exactly. And all in all -yes, good luck..."

- Be ready! ForFatherland! Bless me, mother...

Quietly...

- "...and Ivan didn't listen to his mother..."-And he was right, to fight means to shed blood.

''...He waves his sword in frontof thearmy, - the Holy Evening... the Holy Evening..."

- May I report you, general! The order is fulfilled!

- Good. Aha, good... and where is Orliuk?

Ah, is ityou, Orliuk? Give him wine.

- Acomplete silence, comrade general. -Ooh, you see! How are you? Wounded?

- No,

it was disgusting.

- "...And a King doesn't know, the forces ask, -

the Holy Evening! Oh, if only I knew whose son was fighting, -

the Holy Evening! I would give in marriage my daughterto him, -

the Holy Evening!..''

- Tetiana, call forthe frost, and let us havedinner. Sitdown Ivan, sitdown daughters.

Hey, the frost, the frost, come here to eat kutya! The frost, the frost, come...

THETHIRD FLAMING SUMMER HAD PASSED.

Ukraine was in flame from Don till Dnipro.

High conflagrations lightened Dnipro fora long time, starting from upperreaches of polissia down to Zaporizhia lower part.

Beaten in cruel battles, retreated over the Dnipro huge Hitler regiments.

The HitlerGermans retreated with all theirsatellites

under the destructivestrikeof the SovietUnion.

Fully armed with military experience, gotin the battles for Moscow,

Stalingrad, Voronezh, Kursk, Belgorod, Kharkiv, on the Don

and many other battles, the Sovietforces came to the Dnipro.

- The Dnipro! I swam in these waters!

This is my river, brothers!

This is my shore. Look, there, on the opposite side can you see pear-trees and cherry-trees on the mountain?

They are mine! And my house is behind cherry-trees...

- Take to the right! Keep to the right! Hurry up!

- "Baikal''! I am ''Kama", I am ''Kama"...

- Ready... we start!

Only one hour is left. Forgetfor this hourall orders, difficulties, all the prose fuss,

the whole war mechanism. Go to the soldiers and tell them the most important.

And the most important right now isa good word. I know, they do notneed to be persuaded, norforce them: Kyiv is in frontof them.

But the Dnipro doesn'tbecome less deep because of this, and the enemy doesn't become weaker...

This is a great night. That is why you shouldn'tavoid great words. Measure lifeand death with great measure.

Tell a common ordinary sovietman -a soldier,

tell him, whose grandfathers and forefathers prayed God fora crumb of immortality fora one-kopeck candle,

tell him, that the immortality knocks his breast itself this night.

Go.

- Soldiers of the great SovietUnion, we force the Dnipro!..

Ourforefathers were taking Christianity right here one thousand years ago. And today we plunge into this sacred river!

- It is a great river, and in spiteof all the bridges being blown-up,

we will be able to reach the opposite bank. This is ourduty before Motherland!

- Death to fascist occupants!!

- What shall we wish this night and what wills shall we make to ourdescendants?

We will to them, brothers... I mean, I want to say that if our time has come, then we will to them immortality.

- Death to fascist occupants!

- So, I explain: in frontof us is not only the opposite bank of the river. In front of us is another, so to say, bank of ourfate.

Ready! The first boat is coming underOrliuk's guidance. - ...Orliuk.

- Don't look back-one! Completely silence - two! Beall eyes - three! Go!

- Follow me!

- Next!

- It's too late. We need to cut off the arm.

- Out!

- Cutoff quickly!

- No, itwould be better to sent him to the rear.

- Cutoff quickly!

- Next!

- How do you feel yourself?- Notbad... quite good...

Doctor, tell me, will I be alive? - Be alive?

Oertainly, why, of course!

- Wait... doctor! Is bandaging needed? Ah?..

So, here where I am...

Bandaging...

I want to live! Do bandaging and everything necessary.

You assumed that I am dead?

Bandaging, do bandaging... I want to live!

- Do you think we will rescue him?- He rescued him himself already.

Hold like this... Come on, hold, damn it... Come on!

- Only look athim, whata handsome man! Whata thorax!

And what a shoulder! What legs! And a neck!

And whata step! Did you see in whatmanner he entered? He is as slenderas God...

Oamphor! Well... good. Oh, whata fellow!

Only look at his muscles!.. In what a manner he entered! - But how he entered?

He was a bed-patient! -And whatyou know about this! A hen!

- How you dare offend me! -I'm sorry...

- Where is this strength from? He had no pulse!

- He had a will... Hold!.. - Do you think he will live? -He will outlive both of us!

Hold! Right... Believe me, he's already done more to rescue his life than we are doing now... Bandage!

You won the decisive battle almostwithoutany means for success.

I thank you, you taught me how to live!

I worship thegenerosity of yourwill.

- Alive Orliuk! - Well done, Orliuk! -Well done, Orliuche! -Alive! -Well done!

- Comrades! Comrades wounded! Kyiv has been liberated!

- Hurr-a-ah!

- Hurr-a-ah!..

- Hurrah to the victory!

- Long live!

- Long live a little to meas well, sergeant Orliuk, here it is, my station.

Good luck, my comrades! - Good-bye, Orliuche!

- Greetyour houseand family from us!

- Don'tstay too long!

Is he at home or not?

He is at home. Here it is, his hut:

White one with a warm thatched roof, the architectural original motherof human shelter,

unclosed, always opened to everybody

without knocking thedoor. Without"May I come in"and without ''Oome in". Thedwelling as simple as a good word.

And rational, as if itwere built by nature and not by human hands.

I don't belaud you, my old hut... I say good-bye to you.

I told you before the greatwaras well: vanish from the face of my land, turn into mansion,

coverwith iron, grow up, rise upon the gardens, go upwards and stretch in width.

Even if it won't be you already, at leastthegrief and troubles will disappearfrom yourdark corners and cold innerporch.

Good-bye! I am suffering. It's a pity for me. There were such a good smell of old times and peace in you,

a smell of mintand dried pinks,

and yourdurable lavish furnace smelled of borsch and fresh bread.

There is no you, and there is no place where to restmy head.

- Is that you? -Ivan! - Uliana? Ulia!

- Ivan!

- And appeared whitesnows, appeared the whites. And thegrove as well... (Furtherwords are difficult to comprehend).

- What? That's the limitfor the Commander!

Right there theoffence plan is being developed, and he needs to carry out registry ceremony here?..

Who let you come in here? Yoursurname?

- O-o... Orliuk!

- General! Let me hand you a package!

- So, how are you?- I'm in the homeland, comradecommander.

And I beg you, general, todo this honourto us, and in such a way, thatwe could rememberthis day as a holiday forall our lives long!

- I see, I see. The only thing is that I don'tknow how to carry outthis, neverhad the chance to do this. And how would you like it to becarried outapproximately?

- I don't know, general, butsomething different from what we had before war.

- We would like something fineand a little been ceremonial.

- Exactly, a little bitceremonial, in conformity with region conditions.

- petrov! - I am! -Make ready my civilian suit!

Well... I will try, but letme think a little bit.

- Is it me? Is itreally me?

How good! Hownice it is thatI am like this!

What a luck that I am notdecaying in a pit, not languishing in slavery,a luck thatI am alive and I am what I am!.. Oh!

- They seized some town, but I didn't hearout. -Which one?

- I was in the market. -Which town they seized? Who said it?

- Well, I was selling seedings and buying pinks and poppy.

- You've gone deaf, woman? Deaf?

- Aha. And I am thinking, let itbloom. I like when it blossoms in the garden. I remember my mothersaying:

''This world is like blossom of a poppy, it starts blooming in the morning, and falls off in the evening..."That is, and all...

Thus, when Germany rouse, whatdid they do? Became partisans,

and started shooting fascists, those your Orliuchenky.

And I carried them in the boat to fight, those partisans. But, obviously, they were notpredestined to reach the shore:

every single one was shooted from gun.

I'm the only one, who survived. And I didn'tnotice atonce, that they weredead, and continued to say them:

''Oh, don't shake the boat, my sons, don'tshake it!.."And they captured meand tookforquestioning as I were-wet and beaten.

But I said them: "Don'task me, I will not tell you anything, as you are so disgusting and miserable.

You may kill me, all the same you killed my children, let you've been beaten on the road, let the raw soil spurn you..."

So it is, my dear, that'sforsure: since then I've becomedeaf...

I talk too long with you. I have to go and dig the vegetable garden, let me carry outthegreatcoat... - I won't!

I will lock it in the chest, aunty, so that my children and grandchildren could see it...

- Butit is notgood-looking! What they will see? Only holes perhaps... - Oh, they will see a lot!

- you have to forget everything, so thatit won't stirupold feelings... put it out of your head and think about handsome and good...

Here, they are coming!.. Oh, help!..

...all the bridesmaids. They sat on the benches, seton the benches...

- Uliana?! Comrades, you just look! No, you just look! The picture ofRenaissance!...

- Let's go!

- Let me then bless children. They have neitherfather, nor mother. They arealone, like blades of grass...

- No, we are not alone, aunty, we would wish to everybody such a feeling of fellowship.

''...Letthe noble rage break outas a wave,

The popularwarcomes, thesacred war.

Let the noble rage break out as a wave,

The popularwarcomes, the sacred war.''

- please, repeatafterme:

''According to the Law of Soviet SocialistRepublics Union

we, Ivan Demydovych Orliuk and Uliana Vasylivna Riasna, express ourwill to live together..."

- Awill to live together...

- ''...as a husband and a wife...''

- A husband and a wife.

- "...the founders of a family and continuators of itin the name oflaw of life fulfilment..."

- The law of life... - "...in the name of welfare of our State, immortality of our people and personal welfare.''

-Immortality of our people and personal welfare. -A bridesman and a groomsman! Give wine to married couple!

Kiss each other.

Hurra-ah to the newly-weds! - Hurra-a-ah!

- I didn'tknow yourparents, Ivan and Uliana. -They were martyrs!

- They were heroes! -They were soviet people,

and I, being born at Volga river, worship their handsomeness,

as only handsome people could bring up on Dnipro riversuch children.

In great times united you your hands, Ivan and Uliana.

We are winning the huge and the mostwicked power-the Fascism.

I know that our nations will probe ourweaponsfora long time, count ourwounds,

brighten with gratitude orstiffen from hate,

they will be proud of us, they will be afraid of us, they will frighten each other by us,

make money on ourweak points and underestimate ourvictory and ourshed blood.

Do children, young men. You grasped the terrible art of war.

Grasp the art of living! Be lavish with love, with cries of giving birth!

Butkeep in mind, Uliana, that the she-wolf also gives birth to herchildren, but they grow up, becoming wolves on the earth.

Agreat thing fora motheris togive birth to a human being, but more great thing is to give birth and bring up a friend, nota wolf,

a brother, nota plunderer.

Who else, more then us, have grasped it, while performing historical campaign

and witnessing how the war hurtfeelings of a soviet motherall around.

And dearladies, ourguys saw you in theirdreams, butnotin soldier boots and grey greatcoats.

- Right! Right!

- You were in bestdresses and bestattires in frontof their young eyes.

But the history has made its own choice. It puton yourfeminine shoulders rough dress of a warrior,

and itsentyou not a music buta gun roar, and notflowers buta flame of a fire,

and putrid smell in spite ofParisian perfumes!

Let us praise our Russian greatcoat,

and neverforget how we went through roads of war in it, and how we carried out our banners!

Soon, all soviet forces, from Polissia marshes up to the Black Sea area,

rushed towards the West. The cities were being liberated, thousands of villages as well.

Many people would neverreturn home: they would not see their families, theirskies,

their beautiful lands. They would carry fame of their Fatherland through many cities and stay there forever -

some would stay forever nearby Lviv, some -nearby Sandomyror Warsaw, and some - nearby Berlin itself.

But nobody thought about that. There was no time already. perhaps, the history nevertightened itself in such a horrible clod,

never hearts of millions bet in a more super tension,

neverappeared in a man more generous strength and greatness of spirit,

than in the immense sovietheartduring the World War.

(In German).

(In German).

- Fill in yourglasses!

(In German).

- Gentlemen, please, be sitted.

- Achtung! Voll Entdeckung!

- Ha-ha-ha... ha...

This night, gentleman, a wonderful thought cameacross my mind.

I noticed that all those Russian marshals totally ignore military science.

As a result, you see, theentire tank armies were left unused in dirt!

We, togetherwith my wife, noticed it atonce... I'm married, gentlemen, you know,

I married to Hitler.

I suppose, you are aware thatour Fuhreris a woman. Not taking into accountmoustaches and eastern living space.

Eins, zwei, drei, well done! Eins, zwei, drei! Good!

Good! Ha-ha-ha-ha...

By the way, who thought out that eastern living space? And why it is living,

and not fatal? Answer! General Guimmelshtok!

- I'm notgeneral Guimmelshtok!

- And where is general Guimmelshtok? - He's been killed. -And whatdid I say? -You said - general Guimmelshtok!

- It's not true, I didn'tsay it. Oolonel Gauss is also killed? Isn't he?

Gauss, Shmidt, Fon Rediguer, aren'tthey? Ratzenau...

- Field-Marshal Manshtein. - I'm sorry,

aren'tyou a field-marshal Fon Manshtein? - No, I'm captain Shchultz.

- Certainly! - I'm nota field-marshal... - Butyou've been killed, field-marshal!

- No! I saw you with my own eyes before yourdeath, mister field-marshal!

- I'm nota field-marshal, you are wrong! -You were running with marshal baton

across this living space.

And then... you fell as well. Ah-ah-ah... I feel a headache. Ah-ah-ah...

- Hur-rah-ah-ah!..

Oh, the children of Germany! Oh, the orphans and widows of a great country!

General Fon Brenner is standing knee-deep in dirt. His watery eyes,

lacking in signs of a thought, are directed backwards, towards the traversed bloody path up to the Volga River.

How many wits were lost, how many hard-working hands in the prime of their lives! What masters,

skilled craftsmen, what greattalents covered the ground with theirdead bodies along thousands of miles!

Grievous fame...

In the middle of the XX-th century, when there were everything already to turn the earth into a paradise, with

all constellations of its nations, large ones and small ones, - whatyourfallen fathers did to Europe,

being poisoned with the lifeless idea of fascism?

Previous warsdidn't giveany lesson to yourfathers, may be you would look on things realistically in the light of burning buildings:

as you and nobody else in the world would nevergetanything, butgrief and ruins, by means of threats and military venture.

- I'm disabled, father! - I see.

You'redisabled indeed.

Does it hurt you? - I woke at night, and nothing to touch! Nothing.

- Whata grief!

- Disabled people are also different, sonny, as everybody in the world. One can be disabled becauseof cowardice oreven vodka!

- Don't make me angry, father. I used to go into the attack!

- But it doesn't matter: attack or notattack. The waris finishing.

- It is a Belgorodskaya arch! You see?

- Let it be arch, you only put itout not very frequently, so that people were notconstrained looking atyou.

- That is, whatdoes it mean? - Nothing in particular... Don't bother people. people live hard even without yourarch, sonny.

So, you'd betterthank your lucky stars and hobble by yourself carefully:

do not booze, do not cry and keep yourself from lie.

Why? Oause from a wound to a lie is only one step. I know it from my own experience.

This isgrief without any doubt. Whatelse?

- Why a grief? Its luck-he returned alive!

- Keep silence with such a luck: a luck, a luck!

The Fatherland was nearly perished, - one had to shed blood!

- Mother!

- Mother!

- Daughter! Mariia! Are you alive? Or I'm sleeping, Mariia?!

- It's me, my mother! - I returned... people!

- Hello, mom... and Pavlo?

Did you hearfrom Pavlo? Did he return?

- He is at home. - pavlo! At home? Where is he? Pavlo!..

- He stands on the square. -On the square? Why? -Waiting for you. Didn't you meet him?

- I didn't see him, I walked by lower road, oh God! How is he? Isn't he wounded? - He is fine.

- Was heatwar? -He fought fora long time. -Whom was he? - Acaptain.

- Acaptain? Really, mother?- Ora hero... I don't remember now. People told...

- I'm running! -Walk carefully. - Don't scare me, mother! -Walk slowly, my dear, gatherstrength.

- Butmother, I go. Go as my heartbeats. I'm so scared, mother!

...Oh, I shall walk, a young girl, alongside bank and meadow, oh, I shall walk,a young girl, alongside bank and meadow,

may be I will return with a friend, who is nota promised husband. Hello, hello, a meadow, nota promised friend... No, not these words... Whatis with me?..

Oh, I shall walk, a young girl, alongside bank and meadow... No. ...I walk, a young girl, alongside bank and meadow... No, not alongside bank and meadow, but alongside lowland and valley...

Oh, I walk, a young girl! Oh!.. Wait, this is a song...

itis a song!.. Why? I will tell my own words. Such words, which I have,

there are no in any song. It's impossible to say everything, I know, but I will gatherall my strength to tell all my sorrows, all sufferings.

Where is he? Why I do not see him? Pavlo, answerme! This is your unlucky captive Mariia has returned from captivity, your wife.

I've broughtyou my shame and suffering -a child of unknown father. Kill both of us, orspare our lives,

if you are a hero, where I am? Pavlo!..

Where are you death? Where are you, my beauty, my swallow? Spare my feelings. Where are you wandering, spending time with others men,

my dark sister? Oome back, smile to me... I don't wantto live! Pavlo! Pavlo!..

Seek consolation, woman, while you are young, fulfil your predestination.

Let my mother's old agecry for me. -What is my predestination? How can I console myself?

- In labour, in love, in children. -Where may I find this? - In a favourable flow of good times.

- And if there are no good times for me? There are so many of us in the world!

- Then praise yourself in suffering.

- No, I can't. I don'twant to, I'm feeble and small forsuffering. I'm unable to think aboutthegreat.

- I don't know others ways out. Probably, thereare no any others. - Do you tell me the truth, my great hero?

- I am notgreatand I'm nota hero, but I did my best for my Fatherland in great times and with greatpeople.

And here I am, the bronze one, standing on the guard of generations. you must remember, I didn'tthink much aboutthe great myself,

and I talked notgood and sometimes was joking badly. -You always laughed overothers.

- I was working, I was always busy, and I loved you too little, in spite ofbeing born for love and peace.

- I forgive you. - I didn't cherish you enough.

- Yes... - Sometimes I forgot aboutyou at all, I drank hard to turn out the compassion during campaigns.

I was severe and often even rough, it helped me not to weaken among curse, cries forquarter, difficulties and

among many other things. My time was the timeof oaths, and I fulfilled my oath till the moment when I was smashed into bloody pieces.

- A martyr!

- No, my suffering was immediate. I was attacking then, and the enemy was running in frontof me.

Tell yourchildren exactly this: my enemy was running in front of me.

- Whata sky, Ivan!

- Look, ourwar hasfinished... - No, oh, no!

- How immense and incredible this life is! Whata war! -Yes!

- All this seems to be a dream. -And me too. I feel like we've lived forcentury. -Yeah!

- Do you remember how I told you before the warabout my thirst for life. -Yes, I do.

- I always wanted, so to say, to become double, to split into one hundred parts, and my each part would then

live and create, and learn different good, and all these parts were me. - I remember.

- Do you regret anything in those times? - No. -Do you love me?- I love you.

- I love everything in you. I love the ground, you walked along so much. I loveskies and air, you breathe.

- My dear. - My dear, I love you, as I lovea bread and a honey, and water.

- I close my eyes, talk...

- I killed... a lot. - Stop it. -I stop.

And I have many wounds as well... - No, no.

- Tell me what you were thinking about.

- I think that we are again standing at the beginning of life. We have the most importantwork,

all the beauty, which the artists lookfor, - all sunrises and sunsets, all thegrass, all flowers,

all, what is dearand sweet to a man, - all this is our now, the evening dew and morning dew...

- Adew... Ivanochku, I like morning dew so much!

- Many people neverenjoyed with dew. They are worthless.

- They do not need thedew. They haveanother happiness. They do not need the sunriseas well.

- They neverstepped on the dew with bare feet. -They have thin evil feet.

- I would make them walk on the dew. - It's impossible atthe moment. Why?

- It is very expensive, butthis momentwill come. A man will return to the morning dew.

And gardens will blossom around him. And it's impossible either to kill, oreven quarrel in a blossoming garden.

- Besure, I remember. -But now the man needs a house-roof, not thedew...

- I don't need any roof. I want to sleep togetherwith you under theskies and to see the stars...

Who is here? -Kyivers - the Duke Sviatoslav and his warriors. Weare yourdream.

- No... no... could a man come in dream to another man afterone thousand years?

- On this place -yes... this is an old shore, and my boats stood right there.

- Butso many years have passed! Centuries have passed!..

- They gathered now around your bed, links of old times and coming years.

- Can't understand... I can'tunderstand, Ivan, are you sleeping? Ivan...

- As an old grass, and it smells thesame, and the same stars. And the Dnipro was old already when my thoughts took meaway to the Danube.

- Is that you, Ivanochku?-What happened? -Were you sleeping? -No. - No?

- I was thinking about the Danube. - Oh, when? Tell me when it was? -Ah, I don'tknow. I'm sleeping.

- And whatdid you say? Ivanochku, whatwas that? -Thatwas a feeling. But it was justa dream.

- Butcould we both see the samedream? Embrace me, embrace me.

Oh, God, howfine... What the stars! How happy weare!

It's impossible to beso happy!..

- Rise it up higher,

forall the offsprings could see!..

- Uliana Vasylivna!

- Uliana Vasylivna!

- Uliana Vasylivna, let me thank you for the liberation from German fascistyoke.

-Tell us, please, is it were you, who painted over portraits in the handbooks?-Me?.. I had to do that. Horrible things were happening here.

First, I thought... - What? -No, nothing, I swearmy honour.

Thatone, how to say, that is, would you believe, I nearly ran away to guerrillas.

- And what prevented you from doing this? Well, I didn't manage atonce. you don't know, you can't run away from fascists.

They are horrible enemies of humanity. I cried... I hated them! - Did you sabotage?

Any armed resistance? Did you trained pupils and their parents to be firm? -This is... what is it, a court?

- Today the whole world, all nations, the whole philosophy, history, politics areatlaw with each other.

The presentand the past, the humaneand the heroic are at law with the worthless and the criminal.

- Yeah... well... let... me... - Who are you? Whatforare you living on the Earth?

Say me what you have perceived of the horrible sense of the war? What were you doing here?

- Butyou don'tknow those things which were happening here!.. The whole world is going to something...

- Those things which happened here will never happen again. It was the time of heroes and martyrs.

I wish you had become eitherof them. The whole life you went on tiptoe.

- Ulyano Vasylivno, did you kill fascists? -No, children, no, I didn'tdo it.

I just used to save the lives of oursoldiers. -Taras also killed two fascists.

- Three of them. -Taras who?- Bovkun! -Taras, did you really shoot? -Aaa!.. They were fascists...

- In winter they killed ourfatherand his father, grandfatherand Halka as well.

Fourofficers came, eat supper, sat to play cards, gotdrunk.

- He threw the bomb just under icon representations!

- And now, when I will grow, I will be Tarasova. -I saw enough!..

- Listen to me children. Today is a greatday. Ourforces have freed our Fatherland

and are fighting theenemy on theirown territory. We will not have lessons.

Today we will talk aboutwhat you will be doing when you will grow up.

- I want to rescue the wounded, I'm a sick-nurse.

- So. Whatdo you want? -I wantsome bread.

- Well. And you? -I also wantsome bread... - And you? -And I wanta gun.

- And I want to cry, and also wantto eat.

- And Vasia Stupak will marry.

- I will say by myself. - Do you want to marry, Stupak?

- I think so. As long as I've lived, I never thought about it, and now I think.

- Butyou still little. How old are you?

- Thirteen. The policemen killed my fatherand then hanged my mother.

And I have two small children to look after, and the cow isgoing to have a calf, and I have to work in the vegetablegarden. That is why I'm thinking to marry

an orphan and start living. I understand really that I haven't grown-up still,

but I can't allow children to be lost. I don't know.

Now the collective farm will notleave me with my children alone, how do you think? - Never!

The collective farm helped the State to survive, Stupak, and it will help you, undoubtedly.

Today we will come to your houseand help you. -So, I don't need to marry?

- Don't marry. You will study. Do you want to study?

- No. Not very much. -Why? -As it is.

- Butyou may study and then become a greatman. -My father was not learned, but he was a greatman.

- I know, yourfatherwas a great man, he was an organizer, a head of a collective farm,

as well as a great partisan and a great communist, but if he also was a learned...

- Ah-ah-ah... Germans!

- Hordiiu Ivanovychu!.. Pavlovychu! Open the door. - I will die! Oh, my God... I don't know you!

- Hordiiu Stepanovychu, forGod's sake! -I... I don't know you! - This is me! - I don't know you! - Hrybovskyi!

- We are notacquainted! This is provocation! I am busy! Do you hear me!

- Justopen thedoor! Do you hear me?! Open the dooror I will kill you!

Oomrade, stop it!

- Theaccused Hrybovskyi!

Theaccused Hrybovskyi, answer!

(In German, in French).

- Theaccused Shchruder, do you recognize this man?

- No. -You do not recognize him as an agent of fascist intelligence Hrybovskyi?

- No.

- Theaccused Kurbatskyi! -Yea, sir! I don'tknow. I have never seen him...

- The witness Mandryka? - I am... how itsay... -Whatis your nameand surname?

- Hordii Pavlovych. My... My?.. -Yes. The yearof birth? -Well, wait... nineteen ten.

- What is you occupation? - Em-em... a teacher... whether... - Where were you during fascist occupation? -Nowhere, I swear. Here I was, Ivane Demydovychu. Do you think I could?..

- Do you recognize in theaccused, who rushed into yourflat, the Ukrainian nationalist Hrybovskyi,

who destroyed a third of ourvillage, ourschool, who killed the headmaster, togetherwith others executioners?

- Em-em... - Do you recognize?

- That is that one, how is his name? This man seems to be him - and not him atthesame time.

It's difficult to say atonce whetherit is he ornot. Ask the people, they may know more, and then I will...

Em-em... I need to look closer...

- He makes network! - How?-The witness Virskyi Pavlo Danylovych!

- I am! -How old are you? -Fifty. - What is you occupation? - I am a doctor.

- Did you work on fascists occupants? - No. - Did you escape from the concentration camp?-Yes.

- Did you infected people in ourvillage with a rash?-Yes. With a rash, a herpes, trachoma...

- He saved usfrom the slavery!

- Don't ask too much. Onecan die from memories. - Calm down.

You'reon the witness tribune.

- I'm not a witness. The world you're asking about, he is a witness...

- Comrade prosecutor, be concrete.

- Do you recognize this man? Who is this man?

- He is not a man. - Hrybovskyi?

(In German, in French).

- Bring the executed in!

- Olena Stupakova! -I am.

- How old are you? -Twenty four. We are of the same age. -Are you a widow?

- They killed Andrii, he was a partisan. And they also killed my two children,

and my fatherAndrii. I'm a widow and an orphan, the entire widow. - Have you been shot?

-I was. Me? I was.

- Why are you smiling constantly?- Don't mind it,

I can'tcontrol my smile. -Nothing makes you laugh now, citizen Stupakova?

Do you want to cry? -I wantto do something. I want to work.

- Don't worry. We will work with you togethersoon.

To thesurprise of the whole world, but don'tsmile. I ask you not to laugh.

- I'm notlaughing, Vaniu, I'm crying,

as you are. - Question me!

I will tell everything! -Wait a minute!

- You're welcomed.

- - Theaccused Shchruder, stand here.

The accused Shchruder, tell us, did yourgovernment plan

to eliminate all the Ukrainians, who had separative intentions?

- Yes. -I am Hrybovskyi.

- This is he! Oh,oh what a sly he is! There I'm looking and likely recognizing him.

He issuch a bad person!.. It's terrible...

- I will tell, I will tell everything. -Whatforeign intelligence services are you a memberof?

- Of German, of French... - Theaccused,

writedown the names of intelligence services on the paper. - Whatwas your last task?

- To create a sabotage group in the rear.

- Who gave you that task?

- Shchruder. -The accused Shchruder, do you confirm this?

- No.

Though, yes. -Why though?

- When I see this person I want to rejecteverything.

- Ivane, tell him that I curse him!

You'rea murderer, a stony-hearted monster,

how you can only live on the earth!..

- You've humiliated thestatus of a man. - I personally did nothing.

- You're lying. You behaved yourself on our land notas an officer of occupation forces, butas a murderer.

- It is a political question. And politics is free from morale.

This is war, and we all actin its orbit. As Nietzshe said:

''The war is everlasting and moral".

- No, it's noteverlasting and notmoral.

It disappears togetherwith yourdark force. How you dare to rejectall yourevil deed here?

- No... I justwanted to say that I acted notonly in compliance with military oath, butin compliance with what I've been taught to as well...

- Theaccused Hrybovskyi! In compliance with what knowledge did you act?

In the name of what where you telling lie, provoking on treason, on selling our Ukraine,

our nation in slavery. Why you were provoking our nation for perishing? -Wait, please. I will explain you now.

When I came to Ukraine togetherwith them, I understood that I was an outsider.

I acted under the fearof death, rage and vengeance...

Wait! I will tell you everything, everything!

- They hand outleaflets. -Which ones?

- Aboutuncle Roman! He hit six tanks!

- Who?- Uncle Roman!

- Listen... - I'm fed up with listening to each geek.

Enough. Work is waiting!

- The peopleare not interested in yourdeclarations, they are busy.

- They are handing out leaflets! They are handing out leaflets!

''Yourson crushed six fascist tanks in the unequal battle on the border...

- Six tanks!.. Keep silence!

- Only the bestsons of our nation, forwhom there is nothing more important than defence of theirFatherland,

only such people are able to work wonders of valour!

The moment, when the enemy will be beaten at last, is not far away already!

Thank you, fatherof a hero! The Military Oouncil of the battle-front.''

- Here you have Roman! What will you say, Semen Vlasovych?

- I don't know! Itseems to be a sort of propaganda ora lie,

how could thatbe so, six tanks at once?! Do you think this is ducks hunting in the swamp?

Why, the hell, we need to make these tanks, why we mustspoil an iron, if such happens?

- This is notourbusiness, this order. Itis so. - So then,

letit be so. Let it be. I agree.

- Hello! - How is Loboda?

- How is Bukhalo? - Quite well, they are fighting - Loboda and Bukhalo, and Harkavenky - a fatherand his sons.

- Haven't you seen my Opanas? - I'm sorry, woman, your Opanas is not alive already,

Opanas and Levko Chepurnyi are not alive already.

- And is it true that you blew theresomething by yourself? - Six tanks!

- With what? -With bottles! I thought that I could use these bottles. So I throw one -and it burns.

When they've broke through to the trenches, I threw another one! It burns!

I rushed to the trench, ran, ran - the third tank I hitalready from a trench. Then I again threw! And it again flares!

So, then I rushed to my comrades, and they started kissing me. Wait!! Fools,

stop kissing me. Give me bottles quickly, and I took bottles and rushed back, damn it!..

- Are you telling truth? -What to lie for?! Everything was happened in front of people's eyes!

- So, how did you throw them? - As my commandertaught me. Directly backwards, on tank stern.

- Is the tank stern weak? - Ha-ha-ha... Who knows?..

Year! I forgot! I lost my jacket there, I regret it.

- Ajacket?! -Yes. -Where?-There. I took off my jacketwhile throwing the bottles.

It might be lost in fire orspoiled under tank tracks. Whata pity!

- I told you not to take a jacket, don't take jacket... Now you will do withoutjacket, you a warrior!

- Well, father, the war is a populardeed. Here everybody has his own fate.

- Oh, bad times! To spoil such a jacket!..

Well, we must be happy. Never mind! please, come in fora lunch.

Aman, stop! Here is yourworld, eternal and beautiful,

and you are living forsuch a shortmoment in it. Be happy, kind you are.

Restof the routine, ordinary, minor, look.

- Ha-ha-ha...

No! The best of the planets, our motherland, the Mother Earth, will nevercease to exist.

We will disappearfrom yoursurface, onegeneration changing the other, like waves in the ocean.

Butwhile lavishing, we will always say: "Thank you!

Thank you foryour bread, grapes and wine! Thank you for coming and departure, forSpring and Autumn, fordays and nights!

Forevening dew and morning dew! For loveand labour,

for precious blood, being shed in the name of liberty and brotherhood of all nations

forfinding out the principal secret of life on you -

the secret of our human universality. We are yourchildren and we are your measure:

You are wonderful!''

- What a beauty! -Whatare you thinking about, tell me?

Would you like to live here in other times? In times of duchess Olga, the Duke Yaroslav and Khmelnytskyi?

Or in a hundred of years?- I would like to live here now. - Me too.

- We, indeed, havestood up forall previous centuries, all our history, the ancient

and the future one. Are you happy? Yes? -Yes.

I'm happy that I didn't become wicked, that I will continue to live withouthatred and fear,

that I found my own place on theearth. In this handful of collective farm seeds,

there is much more sense in this, indeed, than in the whole fascist history.

Did you notice how they are sewing? - I noticed. Here they come, "ourpeopleabove the war".

These are immortal words of yourfather. Which battle can be compared with this scene!

- Oh, my God! -Ah-ah... - Oh, let the devil take you! Don't throw, don't throw, letyou be thrown against the ground!

-Hold it! Ah, son of a bitch! Get outofhere, Antonina, damn you! Go away, don't come closer.

- Throw it, letyou burst! - Hold it! Don't throw, don't throw!

- Ivan, return! Don't come close!.. Ivan!

- Don't throw, you will hit yourself!

- Here you get, here you get...

- Ulia, what happened to you? You were fighting in battles. - Ivanochko,

that was another thing, thatwas the war, and this is life.
