Take the head off,

you can carry the head and
we'll carry parts of the body.

The tail is the
heaviest part, too.

So we can either go

big, it's a huge morale booster.

Our skills are being implemented

get this meat back

and start processing
as soon as possible.

on getting the hook.

days if we process this meat correctly.

through the guts,

and I'm searching
for the armadillo head.

We not only ate the armadillo,
but we used the head as bait

to hit this alligator up.

That would be one less
thing to catch another gator.

You don't just use
that hook once.

That's more opportunities.
We're here for 60 days.

That is the tenderloin
of the alligator.

because of the old deer hide that's sitting

mouth to feed at the moment.

do to get food on our table,

that the cold was going
to be a serious challenge,

And I just need to try to stay
vigilant about managing it.

Keeping the fire at a good
level to be able to stay warm

and not freeze to
death every night.

gator kill of the challenge...

- So far I've not seen any cruising.

[Matt] The gator
jerky is running low.

We know it's dwindling.

We need to have
a big success soon.

And the colder it gets, the fewer
chances at gators we'll have.

[Ryan] Oh, maggot galore.

I mean, you almost
can't see the meat,

there's so much maggots on it.

[Laughs in disgust]

[Matt] That's perfectly brewed.

I'm gonna grab this rotten,
maggot-covered alligator intestine

and feed it on there.

The stinkiest bait
I've ever worked with.

All right. I think it's all it
needs as far as stankiness.

[Rylie] Out here, you
cannot brush your teeth,

which leads to a lot of dental
problems after the challenge,

and so, just take a piece
of char coal from the fire.

And then I take some water.

We definitely got a little spoiled
with our hordes of fresh meat.

I know that we're
running out of jerky,

so hopefully we'll have another

gator soon.

Until then, it's kinda
gross and it's not fun,

but it makes your
teeth feel kinda clean.

We've got the fire going.

cold front is moving in.

It's gotten substantially
chillier tonight

than it was at the
beginning of the night.

Even the fire is doing not that
much to warm my chilly, chilly bones.

fronds for thatching our roof.

heat of the fire in the openness,

they're starting to cook.

So far, there is an a frame that Max
built together, which is pretty amazing.

We have about a total of
35 pounds just from the tail.

Not including the rest of the body,
a 200 pound gator at 8 feet almost.

We're dripping in meat.
Just dripping in meat.

It's hard to beat.
This is pretty special.

- [Amber] Aww, some of those are already going bad.

[Narrator] Like many reptiles,
alligators contain a high number

of parasites and worms.

Making such diseases as salmonella
and botulism a serious threat

if not properly
handled and cooked.

[Amber] There are many risk
factors when it comes to gator meat.

And Gary over here
will eat anything.

There are so many times I look
at what he eats and I'm like, eh-eh.

I can't do that. I don't want
to risk getting sick out here.

[Gary] Phew. We're
gonna eat real good.

- Seriously?
- Yeah.

Can't share what nobody wants.

In a survival situation, the
smartest thing you could possibly do

is to not let one single
thing go to waste.

people that won't eat everything

when it comes to this,
this isn't restaurant time.

you eat as much as you can.

With the raw hide, it was
good but it wasn't fresh.

It wasn't meat.

[Steven] It had a rank smell to it,
but this is something they're gonna be

more used to. I mean, they
swim with these every day.

Got the new bait set up.

Lotta gators caught come
in here and chill and rest,

we've seen a couple
in this exact spot.

Looks like we got
mondo over there.

[Steven] He's at
least eight feet.

- I saw mondo...
- [Jeff] No way!

- ...upstream about 300 yards.

[Steven] I'm gonna

[Steven] The winter's coming.

And with winter, especially
with the food sources out here,

majority of them
are cold blooded.

And once that cold
weather really hits,

all those alligators
are gonna go dormant.

So, it's essential that we jump
on this as soon as possible.

Get an alligator on the line, and
get as big of a meat bank as we can,

coming into these colder months.

[Speaks indistinctly]

[Whispers] He's close
to shore right now.

My heart is already beating.

Just the thought
of taking him down.

[Jeff whispers]
That's a large gator.

This is the closest I've
seen him to shore yet.

I'm wondering if he's already
smelling the fish head on the hook.

Here comes another.

[Whispering] We've got two
gators right here in the river.

Oh, my gosh.

[Ryan] We have our
bait hook out here

on the big willow tree where
we caught the first alligator.

There is nothing on this hook,

and the fish head is still
hanging above the water.

Recently, the water has
completely receded from our area,

taking all the bowfin fish,

all the alligators,
and all the wildlife.

Our strategy for finding
another food source

is to spread out.

So, Matt, he is
out there hunting,

so hopefully he comes
back with something.

[Matt] I haven't seen
an alligator swimming

for three or four days now.

Our best bet is to
expand our horizons a bit,

try to find food
wherever we can.

I've always said on
my past challenges

that every river
has a heartbeat.

And there's a heartbeat
to this bayou, I know it is.

I am trying to follow
something that beats to

a whole different drum than
any place I've ever been.

And because of that

these game animals

are very hard to pinpoint.

You can definitely tell

there's a little bit of a
trail right through here.

It doesn't look like...

Like any constant traffic,

just looks like
one walk through.

I'm looking, you know, real hard
for tracks and signs of things moving.

I've seen some deer tracks.

I haven't seen any hog tracks,

really no raccoon
tracks or nutria slides.

One more time, I'm gonna
have to just cross the water.

The problem is,

this is not the
first time in my life

I've actually feared the water.

You know, I've swam with sharks.

[Man] Up! Go up! [Bleep]

[Matt] It's coming right at us.

I have literally been
in the Amazon waters

where who knows what's in there.

This is some caiman
looking territory here.

But right now, I fear the
water, because it seems like

every single time I go in
there and try to cross it,

I seem to come
out with nutria itch.

It's a risk. But, every
day we go without food,

sets us back a little bit.

[Grunts]

All those animal tracks are
on the other side of the water.

- But every time I get into this water,

every time, pretty much,

I come out with something bad.

Wind's blowing
pretty, pretty steady.

[Sarah] We got the fire going,

but the wind is so strong,

and it's blowing in all the cold

and blowing out all the heat.

This is not a very good omen
for the rest of this challenge.

It's gonna be very,
very, very cold.

even get my brain straight,

to try to retain any
amount of heat.

The cold has kinda
messed with me a little bit

psychologically, because

it's been just brutal.

And there's nothing
you can do to escape it.

gotta do is get there.

There's just one

in this expanse of a
swamp surrounded by

frigid everything.

is about 12 inches.

The problem is, is when
you set it for 12 inches

but then the tide
drops three feet.

Now you're four
feet above the water.

And, unless you find, like,
a 12-foot alligator out here,

you'll really not get anything,

so, it really
makes it difficult,

almost impossible to gauge 'cause
the tide has changed so drastically,

differently every single day.

Gotta lower that bait
in the water a little bit,

get it nice and
wet and saturated,

get those juices flowing.

that has definitely progressed

[Ryan] Like most dangers
on these challenges,

we're some of the biggest
predators in the world,

but it's often the
smallest things

that take us out
and hold us back.

[Rylie] It's crazy to think
something as small as

a tiny little parasite
that gets in your skin...

It really can. It can take
you out of the challenge.

This, honestly, probably will

Not being able to go
in the water is huge.

It can impact mentally because
I know what I'm capable of

and I know what I can give the team
by getting in the water and doing things.

That, to me, is like taking my hands
and just handcuffing them to a tree.

[EJ] Hunting in these environments
reminds me of when I was in the army

because you have to be looking all
around so you don't miss that opportunity.

A lot of animals blend into the
surroundings so well, especially the snakes.

I have concerns about being bit by
a venomous snake that I don't see.

However, Sarah has some cold issues
and she's losing a lot of weight fast.

So, to get some food
really will help out.

I am going to braid a
tie string for my pelts

so that I can keep warm

and keep my hands free.

Getting a little bit of
work done because

I feel a little traumatized from these
last few days. They were so cold.

[EJ] This is like
moccasin central.

I can smell them. Musky smell.

This may be hard to get
on that log with this spear.

He's got the advantage.

This parasite is

mud or the water, and this is a swamp.

Come on. There's gotta be something
that the environment gives me

to help me make a smoker.

Because we have to
smoke this gator meat,

otherwise it's
gonna go to waste.

I'm looking for something
in the environment that will

give me a blocked off
area or an enclosed area,

something that might
trap in heat and smoke.

I'm in the process of field
dressing this alligator here.

So I'm starting with the head.

Some of the best meat is right
here in the cheeks, soft and tender.

I'm gonna get his head off

and I'm gonna cut him
right down the middle.

Then I'm gonna go right
down all four quarters here.

The alligators, their skin is
attached to their meat super hard, so

I'm gonna have to come by and just
slowly peel away a little bit at a time

until I get down to
that bare scaly skin.

But it's really important not to
rupture the intestines or the guts,

it can spoil the meat, so
it's a very delicate process.

And you gotta do it the right way,
because if you don't do it the right way,

you're gonna miss out on a lot of
meat and you're gonna ruin the animal.

Wow.

Okay, this is interesting.

This entire tree base, from here
all the way down to the ground,

is completely hollow.

I mean, this is almost
like a smoker already.

I should be able to cut a
hole in the base of this tree

in order to feed sticks in
to keep the hot coals going.

And I can actually put a grate
in here that holds all of our meat.

This is a huge find.

Yes!

I'm gonna be able to open
that hole up with my knife blade,

that's where I'm gonna
feed in the green sticks

and then that's gonna cause the smoke
to go all the way up through the chimney.

distance from our shelter,

and getting any of our meat
because it's entirely enclosed.

we're gonna be
feeding in the green logs.

And the top. There's no predators
that can get our meat in here.

They might smell it, they might
want it, but this thing's protected.

All our meat's gonna be
inside here, in the trunk.
