survive the steep, slippery terrain.

Feels really good to have
partners that actually know

how to start fires.

Charlie: Uh, there's
no fire yet, Russell.

You might want to hold off till

we get one started there, Russ.

Oh, no, dude, we'll get one.

They were completely unprepared

for what would
happen to one of them

on the very first
day of the challenge.

The 10th most memorable
tap-out was the fastest ever.

Timber!

Matt: Charlie feels like
one of my military buddies.

You know, he's a go-getter,

marine corps
through and through.

It sounds bad, but I
bust Charlie's hump

all the time about him
being too old to be out there.

Charlie: I'm-a tell you, I
tried to take my walking cane,

they said it was another item.

[ Laughs ]

I'm the oldest one to
do "naked and afraid xl."

The age thing is something
that I took with me,

and I wore it with pride.

First of all, I look, like,

better than a lot of the
younger guys, especially Russell.

[ Chuckles ] You kidding me?

Way better than Russell.

-Whoa.
-Just looking for dry wood now.

Russell: Be careful
on that path, brother.

It's all slippery.

A little bit of rain, this
terrain gets muddy

and more treacherous.

Whoa! Aah! Aah!

[ Groans ]

I remember stepping with
my left foot into an ants' nest.

They swarmed me.

I had hundreds of
ants biting my left leg.

And all I can remember
was stepping aside

to get away from those ants.

I fell to the ground,
I twisted my knee.

-Aah!
-What's up, bud?

-You all right?
-And, unfortunately,

I fell on top of the ants' nest.

-That ain't good.
-Now not only is my leg

being swarmed but so
is the rest of my body.

-Aah!
-I don't know what's worse.

I'm being eaten by the ants
or my quad tendon was broken.

Matt: What's up,
bud? You all right?

Aah! I'm in an ant pile!

[Bleep] Me!

Medic!

Aah!

Pick up my foot for a sec.

Nice and easy. Aah!

Matt: Charlie getting
hurt on that first day...

-Aah!
-...That's like getting

to the world series and finding
out you're not on the team.

-It's pretty depressing.

Charlie: Holy [bleep]

Can I stay in with
a dislocated knee?

Are you gonna put
it back into place?

Well, Mr. Charlie, what
the doctor's saying here,

it looks like you may have
ruptured one of the tendons

in your knee.

We don't think we can,
in good conscience,

medically let you
continue the challenge,

and we're gonna have to get
you back to the United States,

possibly surgery.

I can't leave these two guys.

How does it feel
to tap out on day 1?

I didn't tap out.

I was medically
tapped, unfortunately.

I did not want to leave.

No, I ain't going on that.

Take that and use it as a raft
or a lifeboard or a surfboard.

I ain't going anywhere.
I want to go that way.

But I wasn't carried out.

Marines don't get carried out.

I limped out with pride.

That's a tough
sumbitch right there.

I had two major
operations on my knee.

There's almost 100
stitches in my leg.

I live with this pain
every day. It's not gone.

But I remember the Amazon.

Narrator: Clarence,
a "naked and afraid"

and "xl" veteran,

took on South Africa
for a second time.

His first effort, under
swati valley's blistering,

unforgiving sun...

Clarence: This is one of
the hottest days of my life.

Narrator: ...Led to
extreme dehydration...

...and a forced medical tap-out.

Getting ready for "naked
and afraid xl season 4."

This is my second
chance, my redemption.

Joining fellow all-stars
Lacey and Shane,

Clarence was certain
he could succeed.

But then, Africa struck again.

It became the ninth
most memorable tap-out.

Clarence: We're
about to eat meat.

It's an extreme situation,
extreme environment,

and we're doing extreme things.

I wanted to see how
well I could test myself.

I wanted to push
it to the limit,

and that's what I did.

I got a whole lot of
love for you guys.

I got a lot of love
and a lot of respect.

I'm so glad that you're
my partner, Clarence.

Clarence was the glue
that held our group together,

because Shane and I
didn't mesh well together.

And it was like Clarence
was like our peanut butter,

keeping everything together.

Ow! [Bleep]

Oh.

-[Bleep] Scorpion just

bit me in the ass. Oh [bleep]

I can feel that toxin.

Oh, that's going
straight through me.

Lacey: We need a medic.

A little tingling
in the fingertips.

I think Clarence might be sick.

I love Lacey.

She was able to be the sister
when I needed to give support,

and she was very motherly
when I needed to receive support.

pressure gets too high,

you could get a stroke.

I don't have any blame
for anyone for me tapping.

My body said stop, so I stopped.

Can't always
listen to your brain.

Sometimes you got
to listen to your body.

decisions to tap out

are a simple matter
of life and death...

more complicated.

Narrator: In the scorching
heat of Colombia,

Shane's relationship
with his first teammates,

Alana and Danielle,
quickly deteriorated.

[Bleep]

It all led to the eighth
most memorable tap-out.

Looking back, I think what
went wrong in Colombia

was that me, Alana,
and Dani had a definite

difference of opinion
on survival tactics.

I wanted to work really hard
and set up this posh place

and just relax for a
couple weeks afterwards

and get into a rhythm,
and they wanted to do

as little as possible
from day one.

I was pretty pissed.

I'm chopping down trees so
we can have a decent lodge,

and I come back, and I
don't even see anything made.

I'm like, "seriously, man."

I think you're lazy.

Okay.

Narrator: The already
tense situation grew worse

as Shane opened up
to Danielle and Alana.

I was able to read
my psychological file

when I was like 19 years old.

I should be a
[bleep] serial killer,

reading that profile.

When I made the comment about
the serial-killer comment, um...

I was... Kind of being a [bleep]

I really wanted them
to back up and realize

that I might be a sweet
gut who's gonna bend

over backwards for you,
but if you think you're gonna

take me for granted,
here's the line in the sand.

And, yeah, that might've
blown up in my face a little bit.

[ Laughs ]

He almost seems proud of
himself when he says these things,

like it's a badge of honor to be
this close to completely insane.

Shane: The tension grew and
grew and grew and grew from that.

I'm offering to help you
for whatever you need,

because I do -- have
we asked for help once?

So your point is that you don't
want me around at all, then?

Right. All right.

It got to the point where I
couldn't deal with it anymore,

and I separated, which wasn't
the best decision on my part.

I'm at a huge disadvantage

because I can't
do friction fires.

[ Thunder crashes ]

It's getting ready to rain.

This is the worst possible
day it could do this.

Narrator: With no fire to
keep warm, going it alone

proved to be a
struggle for Shane.

It's been raining for
about 2 1/2 hours.

So I'm pretty cold right now.

I'm just trying to get some
body heat and walk in place.

[ Thunder rumbling ]

Narrator: After fending
for himself for five days,

Shane was eventually
welcomed by a new team.

-Hey!
-What's up?!

[ Laughter ]

-Holy [bleep] Jeff.
-Good to see you.

-What's up, man?
-Man!

Narrator: But the physical
damage had been done,

and by day 31, Shane
had had enough.

Shane: I [bleep]
hate being so weak.

Shane?

I knew you were feeling
weak this morning.

I figured I'd bring
you some food, man.

-You all right?
-Yep.

You didn't black
out again, did you?

Just a little dizzy.
Just wanted to hold on.

I just want to cry right now.

Looking back on
that, it does eat at me.

It ate at me for a long time.

I was pissed at myself. I
was pissed at the situation.

I was pissed at everything
that happened out there

and the way that it happened.

Um, I want to express
my incredible gratitude

for taking me in and
working with my personality

and allowing me to
be a part of the group.

I've been busting my ass,

and I'm running out
of energy every day,

and I don't think it's
healthy to risk it anymore.

So I'm gonna tap out.

I tapped out on day 31

because I couldn't
physically perform any more.

I know that Jeff and
ej would've carried me

for the last nine
days... Brothers for life.

Cool. Appreciate that.

I'm really gonna miss you guys.

...but I felt if I had taken
that much from them for them

to carry me that I would've
possibly prevented them

from completing the challenge.

That's not my personality.

Nobody carries me.

challenge is one of the most
difficult survival experiences

on the planet.

veterans joined forces to
try and get through 40 days

and 40 nights in
locations so brutal...

-This place is the [bleep] devil.

Narrator: ...That even
the most skilled survivalists

can meet with failure.

Oh, my god.

The countdown of the top 10
most memorable tap-outs continues.

[ Thunder crashes ]

32 days into their adventure,
Russell and chance

were trapped in a torrential
downpour deep in the jungle.

Chance: We were hoping
that the rain would hold out,

but hunting on a
day like this is, uh...

Not a good approach out here.

That's why they
call it the rainforest.

Narrator: It was an ordeal
that would prove to be

too much for one of them,

and it became the number
7 most memorable tap-out.

The reason why I
thought I could make it

through the 40-day challenge
is simply because it's survival.

It's not hard.

When you rely on other people,
that's where you make mistakes.

I had a fire before
I took a nap.

Oh [bleep]

Well, when I woke
up, the fire was out.

I like having the fire.

It keeps me warm.

That's the purpose of a fire.

And this [bleep] ain't
stopping anytime soon.

No fire plus rain
equals Russell tapping.

For somebody that's
so gung-ho as chance,

I can see that that would
bother him if he tapped.

So I was trying to ease him
into it, if that were the case.

Yeah.

Chance was upset
that I left him out there.

And that's how
chance felt about it.

That's his issue.

Losing Russ,
personally, really sucked.

He was one of the people
that I instantly connected

with more so on the team.

Russell: I don't see that me
tapping on day 32 being a failure.

I don't feel like what
I did was wrong.

So I didn't have
any shame in it.

If you were to ask me who
I think the best survivalist

that was out there, I
would definitely say myself.

Narrator: Weeks
earlier, at punta araña,

Matt proved to
be a natural leader

amongst a group
that included Russell.

Put it on the other side
of that pole, and then put it

right on top of the
center -- very center.

Narrator: Tough, confident.

-Yep, that'll work...
-...And able to provide

for the others.

If you wanted a warrior in
the Amazon, we really can't ask

for much more.

Narrator: But when the
unexpected happened,

the sixth most memorable tap-out

proved to be one of the
most emotional so far.

Matt: Ah! [Bleep]

Tu madre [bleep]

Black palm piece of [bleep] aah!

In the Amazon
jungle, I found myself

stepping on dozens
of black palm thorns.

Feel like something
shot me in the [bleep] toe.

They were like a
hypodermic needle covered

in various bacterias,

and there's thousands
of them on one tree.

Oh.

-Your foot okay?
-It's hurting.

Like, this whole part
of my foot hurts like hell.

Almost want to call
the medic, but I don't.

-That looks bad.
-Matt's a good guy.

I like him. But I think
Matt would've let

his foot completely rot
off in order to stay there.

I admire that.

At the same time,
I think that's stupid.

-Medic!
-It hurts to curl my toes.

That's, like, the main problem.

Definitely could be.

I've had them
right there recently.

Russell: Hearing that he
had a flesh-eating bacteria

got me in a bit of a panic,

because there's no
telling where it got spread.

He could've had his foot
up against anything, and...

That scared me.

-Hey, Matt.
-Hey.

So, we received
the test results back,

and the type of bacteria
that came back, um...

Is a lot stronger than
what we can treat out here.

So it's imperative that you
have to go to the hospital.

Sorry.

I know.

Matt: I had felt like I had
become that group's leader,

without a doubt,

and that I would keep
them safe right to the end.

Not being able to do
that felt like I was just --

like I was deserting them.

-Oh, yay!
-There he is!

So, guys, the, uh,
bacteria, it can't be treated.

To make sure I save
my foot, I've got to go.

The look in their
faces of this happiness,

this euphoria, all of a sudden
to just pure disaster mode.

Seeing the tears roll
up in their face just --

just crushed me.

I didn't care about the end.

But I cared about
sharing a little bit more

of my soul out here, you know?

I needed more time.

We love you, Matt.

That just goes to
show you that size,

strength, willpower,
all that [bleep]

Goes out the [bleep] window
on a challenge like this.

To be honest, I'm kind
of glad it happened to me.

Otherwise, it
would've killed Russell.

-Oh, yeah, obviously.
-Russell wouldn't have survived

a night with this thing.

There's no other way to
handle it than throwing our

[bleep] In the river?

the "xl" challenge,

the "naked and afraid" veterans

take on some of the worst
conditions imaginable.

Oh, my god!

While many persevere and
make it to day 40... Yeah!

...others are forced
or volunteer to tap out.

In Colombia, Dani
not only had to endure

the sheer physical
torture of the brutal heat

and fierce terrain, but
the psychological stress

and ongoing friction
with her teammates...

I don't know why
they hate me so much.

Narrator: ...Proved to
be her biggest challenge.

Her downfall became the
fifth most memorable tap-out.

I want to do some
lizarding today.

-Yeah.
-Yeah, I want to do that again.

It was fun.

Colombia was awful.

I was hungry, I was
tired, I was struggling.

Everyone else was
hungry, tired, and struggling.

And so I withdrew.

And that made me an easy target
for everybody else's emotions.

I wonder what's going
on with Dani this morning.

Just feel like there's
always something

going on with her. Mm-hmm.

She's kind of
embraced doing water.

Well, that's the
easiest job around.

Yeah, great. Takes a little
more than that, you know?

I'm still doing water.

I get up early every
morning to fill all the things up

and do this [bleep]
I got the fire going.

I want to sleep.

-Sure.
-I don't take three naps a day.

I think the problem was,
Dani's work ethic was skewed.

In an "xl" situation,
it's important

that everybody does
the same amount of work

and doesn't come
off as riding coattails,

so to speak, because
that opens room for drama.

And for the girls, were
like a pride of lionesses.

When they had
enough, the just pounced.

I have a hard time trusting you.

I feel like if it isn't first
and foremost about Dani,

then it isn't necessarily
a priority in your world.

You don't hang out
with the group to know

what's going on and what's
needed with the group.

Right.

Anything else?

It's too bad that humans
have gotten to this point

where we just trash each
other for some reason,

whether it's that person's
"not pulling their weight"

or that person's
a little different.

Guys, I understand
that you guys think

that I am the worst team
member you have ever had.

I'm trying really hard,

and I feel like this entire
group is working against me.

So if you don't
want me to be here

[bleep] Tell me now.

Quite honestly,
I don't want to be

[bleep] Wasting a breath
of my energy on this

[bleep] Anymore.

Okay.

The way that I have been
treated is really weighing on me.

I mean, I've been
hurt real bad before

but not by six people at once

that I can't defend
myself against.

This is it. I'm tapping.

Physically, could
I have kept going?

Absolutely.

Emotionally, did I
want to keep going?

Absolutely not.

Do I regret leaving
at that point?

No, I do not.

I was really, really
strong in my standpoint

once I had finally
made that call.

And I'm really glad that I did.

Narrator: In the Ecuadorian
rainforest of the Amazon,

Lacey bonded with teammates
Amber and Giovanna.

After a successful
night of fishing...

Look at that -- perfect shot.

We are not only surviving,
we are thriving out here,

and that's how it should be.

Kick butt!

Narrator: ...Lacey's chances
for survival looked good.

Our first piece of
furniture! So happy!

Whoo-hoo!

But like Charlie
before... Aah! Aah!

...the jungle had other ideas.

It became the fourth
most memorable tap-out.

-Ladies...
-So, in Ecuador...

-...let us depart.
-...It wasn't Giovanna's fault,

it wasn't Amber's
fault, it was my fault.

We had brought a fire
down to the water with us

so that we could
use it to draw in fish.

[ Thunder rumbles ] And
then, it started raining,

like torrential downpour.

Amber and Giovanna are
trying to cover it, you know?

And it was just -- oh.

It wasn't working.

To lose this fire would've
been death for our group.

I knew that we had hot coals
that we had left at the shelter.

So I ran up a muddy,
wet hill, and I hurt my knee.

Aah!

Holy [bleep]

I twisted my knee to the point

where I heard a snap,
and I felt something tear.

[ Thunder rumbles ]

But I am damn proud of the fact

that I was able to hobble
my way to our shelter,

because without that fire,

who knows if the girls
would've lasted out there.

All I could think about
was getting up here.

I wasn't paying attention.

Oh, nice! You
got the fire going.

Here.

Oh, are you okay, hon?

We need a medic!

I knew that there was
something definitely wrong.

I prayed that they
wouldn't send me home.

They tried to stabilize my knee.

I mean, there was no way
that I would be able to walk.

Really, the best
mode of transportation,

at that point, was for
someone to carry me out.

The medic recommended
that we bring her back down

to bush camp for observation.

We ruled out a
stretcher right away.

There was no way you
could coordinate people

carrying a stretcher
and descending

a steep, very
muddy slope at once.

Oh, okay.

-[Bleep]
-It was gonna be a lot safer

if one person did
all the carrying.

I was probably
the largest person,

so I decided I would
be the one to carry her.

Lacey: That was, like,
the most vulnerable

I've ever felt
in my entire life.

-[ Groans ]
-Go a little slower.

Step by step, okay?

Aah!

I was broken, naked,
cold, and helpless,

hanging over this
guy's shoulder.

It was a rocky ride,
I'm not gonna lie.

I mean, he was
slipping everywhere.

It felt like we were never
going to get to the medic tent.

Lacey, putting you down here.

Get your left foot down.

-Here.
-There we go.

-I'm sorry. I'm so messy.
-You're fine.

-Don't worry about that.

The pain, it just
kept getting worse.

fracture of the tibia.

Woman: Lacey, based

Yeah.

When the medic explained to me

that I was gonna
have to leave...

That was devastating.

It didn't matter that
it wasn't my choice.

It didn't matter that I
was in excruciating pain.

I felt like a failure.

I totally miss my girls.

[ Sniffles ]

She wanted to do this so bad.

I know.

I just don't want
to let them down.

My teammates, they broke
down, and I broke down with them.

I'm sorry, guys.

It's not your fault. It's okay.

It made me realize
that I wasn't just leaving.

I was leaving my team behind.

My daughter's gonna watch this.

What's she gonna think?

I mean, I told her I would
be gone for 40 days,

and to come back a week
and a half later in a brace?

I didn't want that for her,
I didn't want that for me.

I didn't think I'd
ever go out like this.

This place is uninhabitable.

It's frickin' miserable.

This hurts so bad.

I'm feeling very attacked.

40-day "xl" challenge,

the strong do not
always survive.

Something's wrong. It
shouldn't hurt that bad.

In the eastern
badlands of Colombia,

just 6 degrees
north of the equator,

the temperatures can
peak at over 120 degrees.

It was here, in the
first "xl" challenge,

that survivalists Hakim,
ej, and Jeff quickly became

a tight-knit trio
of Alpha males.

-Hyah!
-Ej!

-Yeah!
-Oh, damn, it is hot.

-Got to get some water.
-I'm feeling you.

Narrator: But the
unrelenting heat led to

the third most
memorable "xl" tap-out.

-Ugh.
-You all right?

-My whole body's cramping.
-Ooh.

Every time I try to
sit up, it's just like...

Can't do it.

Looking back on it, lack
of potassium, electrolytes,

water in your system
really devastates your body.

I mean, I am beyond
dehydrated right now.

The way this thing is going on,

these cramps are
so insane, um...

This is a whole nother level.

So, while I was going
through the cramping,

and I could not use my limbs,

and I started really
thinking heavily.

Like, I got my family,

I got this team here
that's rooting for me,

but I could literally
die right now.

The ego in me says I
just want to push through

and stay here until I die.

You know? And
the other me says...

"That's not very responsible."

If this is it, man, like, I've
got mad respect for you.

Like, you don't
even know. But, uh...

I'd regret even more if
something happened, you know?

You're a tough
guy, and I know that.

No one can take
that away from you.

Whatever you decide,
buddy, uh, we're with you.

Hakim: I'm gonna
have to tap out.

I had to recognize that
I was hurting the team.

You could be
stubborn for yourself,

but that's a selfish act.

Come here, man.

I couldn't allow them
to drag me along.

I was gonna have to remove
myself from the situation

in order to make
their situation better.

It was a great lesson for me.

Narrator: In the intense
south American heat,

the relationship between
Honora and her teammates,

Chris and Luke, became toxic.

These guys are a [bleep]
nightmare to be around.

Luke's not as bad as Chris.

Uh, I do feel, though,

that they're just
teaming up against me.

Narrator: The number 2
most memorable tap-out

might be the most
explosive ever.

Chris: I got along
with everyone.

The only person that I didn't
get along with was Honora.

I climbed, like,
a 30-foot sapling

just to grab a piece of fruit.

Initially, we got along fine.

The next morning,
she was yelling at Luke.

I'm trying to be a good
teammate, you know?

I understand that.

I bring back a
piece of edible fruit,

and neither of you guys
want to [bleep] touch it.

I just didn't like the
fruit. I ate the fruit.

It tasted like [bleep]

When I'm starving,
then I'll eat it.

But then it got
tossed in the mud.

I didn't even get
to finish the fruit

that I climbed 30 feet to grab.

I'll cut the [bleep] tree down.

Then you can have 100 of them.

Stop [bleep] bitchin'.

I'm over it. I don't care.

I'm not bitching.

You've been
bitching for an hour!

The survival environment
is absolutely no place

for anybody that's got any
kind of mental baggage.

I'm feeling very attacked.

It all began as Ryan set
out for some time on his own.

-And look at that.
-He happened upon a tree

bearing what turned out
to be very forbidden fruit.

I look up, and there's a tree.

I'm just gonna eat
the whole thing.

The next day, while on
their way down to the river

in hopes of finding Ryan,

Jake and the others
happened upon the same tree.

They were completely unaware
of what had happened to Ryan.

-Look at this [bleep]
-So, we just bust open

these fruit.

The taste is amazing.

Everything you could ever
want. It's like desire in a ball.

Jake: Fruits kind of taste
like heaven in my mouth.

What we didn't know was
that the fruit was covered

in either bat or
monkey urine or feces.

We didn't see that.

So we ate it.

Definitely a unique flavor
that I've never tasted before.

When we arrived at the river,
we were hoping to find Ryan,

and we didn't.

I wonder where Ryan is.

Ryan was nowhere to be found.

But we did find
his diary camera.

Ryan: [Bleep] Damn. My
diaphragm is killing me.

Throwing up everywhere.

[ Retches ]

This hurts so bad.

A dozen clapper Berry fruits.

But as soon as I saw
that video, I thought,

"oh [bleep] I'm next."

Don't eat the fruit!

-What?!
-What?!

Oh [bleep]

Within about an
hour of eating the fruit,

I knew something was not right.

That was the
first time in my life

that I have ever
simultaneously vomited

and [bleep] myself.

So blessed.

Phaedra: Jake was the glue
that held that crew together.

Seeing somebody that
you care about so much

go through something like
that is really difficult and painful.

While I was very ill,
phaedra just passed me by.

I think -- I don't know
what's wrong with me.

The pain was so intense.

And in that moment,
I really did think

that I was going to die.

Man: So, we'll take him
down to the camp, as well,

and start him on
the same treatment.

1, 2, 3.

Phaedra: The both of us
were in excruciating pain,

lying next to one another.

I told him that I loved him,
and he told me, "I love you,"

and it was very comforting.

She's family to me,
and I was so worried

that she was gonna leave,
and I didn't want to lose her.

I really felt that I would
rather die than to leave.

And I know that sounds
crazy to most people,

but that's my level
of commitment.

I was getting loaded
into the ambulance,

and then, I could
hear screaming.

It seemed like a horror movie.

[ Screaming ]

Oh, my god.

And it felt like my
abdomen was just, like,

closing in on itself,

and I just wanted
to rip it open.

Oh, god.

It was the most
pain I've ever had.

Oh, my god.

[ Screams ] Please!

Narrator: In 24
hours, the tainted fruit

took three survivalists
out of the challenge.

And two days later,
Jake became the fourth.

Jake: How's the blood pressure?

Uh-huh.

Yeah. I don't want to leave.

They told me that I
was too sick to go on,

and I fought them,
tooth and nail, on this.

Okay.

And at that point, I kind of
surrendered to them and realized

that it probably was
best to go to the hospital.

I blame all of this on Ryan.

Just kidding.

But I do.

One thing I learned was,
essentially, that I could get

knocked down very, very hard,

and I will always come back up,

and that my warrior
spirit will never stop.

The big life lesson that
I learned is that I cannot

do everything on my own.

I need people to help
me, and I need teammates

who help me and support me.

Charlie: I took a lot of
good things out of my failure,

one of them being
that I could fail.

This was a little bit
of a wake-up call,

which I think I
might have needed.

Clarence: I wanted to
take on the "xl" challenge

because life is all
about challenges.

Life's all about seeing
what you can do,

see what you can handle.

I wanted to test
myself, and I did.

I have no regrets.
