assigned to the Tylenol murders.

- We recently went out,

and we found James Lewis.

Would you like to see that?

I just am trying to get
your side of the story.

- Yeah.

- Did you ever hear from him?

- We're waiting.

- It almost caused
a national panic.

- These deaths
have been associated

with the presence of
cyanide in two containers

of Extra Strength Tylenol.

- Do not take Tylenol
until further notice.

- Cyanide is so deadly,

an amount the size
of a pea can kill you.

- This was a stone cold mystery,

and people had died.

And many of them
were in the same family.

- I just knew
something was wrong.

- Paula was murdered.

She was just murdered.

- We know that there's
somebody out there

trying to poison people.

- How could he pull off
the crime of the century

perfectly and not get caught?

- We're actively
pursuing this investigation.

This is not collecting
dust on a shelf.

- This could be our guy.

the Tylenol murders.

I named our pursuit Painkiller.

Are you the Painkiller?

Did you lace little
pills with poison,

propagating murder and
nationwide panic in 1982?

And was it all because
your heart was broken

over your little girls?

- Stand by for the open

in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

- Major developments
in the now 40-year-long

investigation into
the Tylenol murders.

- Seven people were murdered
when someone put cyanide

in that painkiller and
then put those pills

back on store shelves.

- Today we learned
investigators went to Boston

this week to
re-interview the man

considered the prime suspect.

CBS2 investigator Brad Edwards
live at O'Hare Airport for us

tonight to talk more
about what we've learned.

Brad?

- Yeah, Joe, good
evening to you.

We went to Boston
as well in June.

We were looking for James Lewis,

and we found him.

Two plus weeks ago, we showed

our entire exchange to
Arlington Heights Police.

At the end, they asked
for a copy of that interview.

We're now going to
hop a flight to Boston

to see what we can shake loose
in these latest developments.

Boston to the boondocks,
thousands of miles,

many months to discover

the Chicago Tylenol
murders in 1982

some say should
have never happened.

The prime suspect
should have been stopped

four years earlier in 1978

with a torso in an
attic in Kansas City.

- I am James Bell,

former Jackson County
Assistant Prosecutor.

Accept no imitations.

- I was going to be
a journalism major.

They required a
foreign language,

and I unfortunately
chose French.

Never got the hang
of it, so ended up

having to do two tours in
Vietnam because of that.

Had I not gone to Vietnam,

I wouldn't have
gotten the GI Bill.

Had I not gotten the GI Bill,

I wouldn't have
gone to law school.

Had I not gone to law school,

I wouldn't be here talking
to you about Jim Lewis.

- Seven people were
dead because someone

had laced capsules of Extra
Strength Tylenol with cyanide.

- A 15-agency task
force was formed.

- Do not take Tylenol
until further notice.

- There was no
more sophisticated

law enforcement
apparatus at the time

than the task force in Chicago.

And they didn't know
if they were looking for

a guy named Lewis,
a guy named Wilson,

a guy named Richardson.

- We have a nationwide
search for a picture

of a person who
identifies himself

at one time as James E. Lewis.

- Or Theodore Elmer
Wilson, as he is also known.

David E. Woods,

John Ryan, Robert Myers,
Raymond Thompson,

and Robert R. Johnson.

- Do you feel that a
legitimate identification

has been made in this case?

Lewis Richardson,
whatever his name is?

- Oh, let me make
sure my phone is off.

- I'm going to show
you the old video.

- Oh, you've got it?

- It's 1982, CBS Chicago.

This is how I discovered you.

- It was here in
Kansas City that police

made the connection that
has resulted in the hottest lead

so far in the Tylenol
cyanide case.

- I've never seen this.

The tax man, Mr. Lewis...

Had that mustache
for quite a while

and wore contacts
for quite a while.

- Because of the evidence,
a Kansas City police sergeant

saw the picture on
TV and recognized

the man as James Lewis.

- I was laying on the
couch tired as hell.

I remember that.

And my little kids were
in the room with me.

We were watching the
news, CBS, Dan Rather.

- Good evening.

This is the CBS Evening
News, Dan Rather reporting.

- And they were doing
a news story on the...

- Seven deaths
linked to poisoned

Extra Strength Tylenol capsules.

- And they flashed a
picture of a suspect.

- Investigators also said
they are seeking these people,

Robert and Nancy Richardson.

- My daughter relates it to me
that she remembers it vividly.

I jumped off the couch, said
that's damn James Lewis,

and then I went upstairs,
picked up the phone,

and made some phone calls.

And my daughter says, you left

and didn't come
back for two weeks.

I wanted to immediately let

Chicago people
know who they had.

- This is the only remnants
of a criminal case file

that I've kept since I was
in the prosecutor's office

1978 through '81.

James Lewis,

Raymond West,

Homicide.

- In 1978, I was a detective
assigned to the homicide unit,

Kansas City, Missouri,
Police Department.

My involvement in the
Raymond West case

started when a body was
found in the attic of a house.

- This was the scene in
Kansas City when police

found the dismembered body
of 72-year-old Raymond West,

a friend of James Lewis.

- I was asked to organize
this case after all the evidence

had been collected and
trying to put it in some sort

of chronological order.

- On July 25, 1978,

a Charles P. Banker reported
to the Missing Persons Unit

that a close friend of
his, Raymond West,

was missing from his
residence at 4812 Campbell

and had not been seen
since two days prior.

Mr. Banker then found a
taped note on the front door,

which read, "Mr. West
has gone to the Ozarks,"

signed James Lewis.

When the police arrived,
Mr. Banker told them

about James Lewis,
Mr. West's tax man.

- The house was locked
up, which was very unusual.

There was a padlock
on the front door

as opposed to just a door lock.

- Mr. Banker then stated
James Lewis arrived,

ran up to the
front porch, asking,

what the hell are you doing?

Mr. Banker said that

James Lewis picked up a hammer.

Mr. Banker said James
Lewis eventually calmed down,

got into his brown
station wagon and left.

Mr. Banker then
drove to the bank

to see if Mr. West had withdrawn

any money from his account.

The bank vice
president said the bank

just received a check made
out to James Lewis for $5,000.

The check was
returned because they felt

the check was a forgery.

Mr. Banker returned
to the residence

at 4812 Campbell
and smelled a foul odor.

He then called the police.

In the attic was found
a highly decomposed

body of a white
male, later identified

as being Raymond West.

Both legs had been severed

from the torso
at the hip joints.

- It was mummified
and decomposed.

We're talking about
middle of August

in Kansas City.

It gets very, very hot.

- How somebody's
body can be up there

in 130, 140 degree
heat, if not hotter,

in July and August
and not see the stains,

not smell the
decomposition for a month,

why did they never,
ever go to the basement...

Where the lawn chair that
Raymond had in his stereo room

now has blood all over it?

If you're searching the
house for Raymond West,

why don't you go to
the goddamn basement

and see if he's down there?

- Take me there.

- And he got away with it.

- So we are looking for
the home of Raymond West,

murder victim,

4812 Campbell.

Can me and my crew...

get a shot of your crawl space?

There was once
a human torso in it.

- Beside the access door
was a triple pulley game hoist.

- A game hoist was used to
haul the body up into the attic.

We lifted fingerprints
from that game hoist.

They were faint.

Our examiner said
no identifiable prints,

but we retained the
lift as part of evidence.

- Do you remember
anything about the hoist?

- No.

What I remember are the ropes.

The signature was
that the same slipknot

that was used to tie the body up

was found on the trunk
of James Lewis's car.

I know my way around knots.

I was in the Navy,
and I was a sailor.

And this was not a
run-of-the-mill knot.

This is a knot that required
a little bit of know-how

on how to tie knots
and that here we had

a sophisticated knot used

to tie up Raymond West's body.

And that same knot
is found in the trunk

of James Lewis's car.

As I was preparing for

the trial of the case,

I went to the crime lab,

and I opened up
those bags of rope

that included the slipknots

that tied Raymond
West's legs and torso up.

And the stench that I got

on my fingers stayed for days.

You couldn't wash it off.

It was just so god-awful.

Curl your hair.

- Why was the case
eventually kicked?

- Stuff in the car...

no Miranda warning,
it doesn't come in.

- That case had been thrown out

for insufficient
medical evidence

and improper police procedures.

- He had a couple
remarkable attorneys, didn't he?

- He did.

Albert Riederer and Russ Millin.

Albert later became

the Jackson County
Prosecuting Attorney.

Russ Millin was a
former U.S. Attorney.

- How in the hell did James
Lewis get such attorneys?

- Uh, that's an
interesting question.

James Lewis, from
information I've gathered,

was active in
Democratic politics.

James Lewis had
done some fundraisers.

That's the best connection

I've been able to
make is politics.

I'll have this criminal
case in my file drawer

till the day I die.

- 4812 Campbell.

Where are you at?

Where I think the 4800
block would be, it's a park.

Where the hell are you?

What's going on?

- Hey, so I just
got off the phone

with the zoning department,

and the place no longer exists.

Now it's Kauffman Legacy Park.

- Oh, shit.

This is where it is.

So the deeds office says

Raymond West's
house was demolished.

I think it's about
right here, right?

Where he ended up a
torso in his own crawl space,

now a pretty park.

- He is 37-year-old James Lewis,

the man convicted
of writing the notorious

Tylenol extortion letter.

- Did you feel then
that you were on trial

for the Tylenol murders?

- I did.

- Did you commit
the Tylenol murders?

- I did not.

- What do you want to say
to the people of Chicago

and to the country,
for that matter?

How should they look
upon James Lewis?

How should they view you today?

- I think that is something
that you're going to

have to take a while to look at.

- These are the case files.

United States of America
versus James W. Lewis.

Mr. Lewis argued
that he intended

to spur the investigation
into a former employer

of Mr. Lewis's wife.

All right, here it is.

It's addressed to
Johnson & Johnson,

parent of McNeil Laboratories.

"Gentlemen," it
says, "As you can see,

"it is easy to place cyanide,
both potassium and sodium,

"into capsules sitting
on store shelves...

"To get buyers to
swallow the bitter pill...

"Take countermeasures...

"Don't mind the publicity
of these little capsules...

"If you want to
stop the killing,

then wire $1 million."

- Can you imagine
trying to tell your wife that,

"Honey, I... I wrote a letter"?

Uh...

"Oh, yeah?"

Well, there's something
else I need to tell you.

They're talking about it
in the radio and on TV.

- One more, James Lewis,

orphaned, adopted.

Wow, he tried to kill
his parents in June of '66

in Carl Junction, Missouri.

I'm just going to walk up.

Ever heard of a last
name Lewis around here?

- Nope.

- No?

We're from out of town.

We're shooting a documentary.

- Oh.

Do you know the last name Lewis?

- Lewis?
- Yeah.

- You remember the name Lewis?

- I just told you that
three goddamn times.

They used to live down there.

- Well, this is the
address we had.

Nice lady just told
me the Lewises

did indeed used to live here.

- Carl Junction, Missouri,
is about 150 miles

south of Kansas City.

It is the place where
James Lewis grew up

and a place where
he is remembered.

- The student is a bit unusual,

one that has problems
with other students,

has personal problems,
family problems at home.

And I think James
probably had all of these.

- Here we are, Carl
Junction High School.

All right, 1964.

Fourth row... one,
two, three, four.

That is James Lewis, FTA,

Future Teachers of America.

- Mm-hmm, we tracked him down.

- No.

- He is remembered
in family photographs,

the adopted child of a
churchgoing farm couple

who gave him the name Jim Lewis.

Relatives who would
not appear on camera

described him as a troubled boy

with a history of
family violence.

This picture shows Lewis
at the state mental hospital

where he was voluntarily
committed in 1966

after attacking his
adopted mother with an ax.

- Nevada, Missouri.

This is where James
Lewis spent time,

the now shuttered
state hospital.

A sign once hung here,

"Lunatic Asylum Number 3."

Have you ever seen these people?

We're just
fiddle-faddling around,

out of town doing a story.

- Sure.
- Okay.

I'm sitting in a car outside
the Lewis's apartment

right now in Cambridge.

- The number you've
dialed is not in service.

- Damn it.

What was the name of that,
Cambridge Community Television?

- Welcome to the Cambridge
Rag, and I have today Jim Lewis.

Hi, Jim. How are you?

Jim, uh... Jim, I've been your
nemesis for a couple of years,

and you're finally on my show.

- Shame on you.
- I know, shame on me.

- I just heard back
from Roger Nicholson.

"No shit."

"Can you call me?"

This is Brad.

- Hello, this is Roger.

- I need to ask
you on the record,

can we record this interview?

- Yes, but here's the deal.
You have to know this.

If I look like a rat
bastard just ratting him out

to people, he'll
stop talking to me.

- Were you the last person
he ever talked to officially?

- I think so.

You were eyed as
the prime suspect

in the Tylenol
poisonings in 1982.

'82, right?

- That's what I've heard.

- I think he, on some level,

likes it that I challenge him.

He's also super smart,

and I find his
intelligence fascinating.

If Jeopardy ever
held a mass murder

serial killer championship
game, he would win.

He would beat all the other
serial killer mass murderers.

- Hi, I'm wanting
to talk to the man

that's there tonight
about his book.

- Oh, excellent.

Uh, this is Jim Lewis,
and he wrote a book

called "Poison! A
Doctor's Dilemma."

- The last time Lewis
did an interview,

he was promoting his own book.

Lewis self-describes
it as a chilling thriller

about a modern Midwestern city.

Poisoned, pure hell on Earth.

And on page 184,

he randomly writes
about the Tylenol murders.

- Decades before Lewis
was a published author,

he fancied himself a writer.

- Lewis was convicted
only of writing

an extortion letter to
Johnson & Johnson,

the makers of the painkiller.

Lewis, acting as
his own attorney,

launched into an
hourlong rambling...

- Rambling statement,

compared his
manuals, his interests,

then himself to Agatha Christie,

the famed novelist,

the queen of crime.

Poison played a role in
nearly 30 of her works.

Christie, in maybe
her finest book,

writes it as the
character Dr. Sheppard.

He's the killer.

He used Veronal.

That's a bitter pill.

Money.

Lewis also writes under
another name, Robert Richardson,

the killer, per the letter.

Cyanide, also a bitter pill.

Also money.

Do you think he
killed these people?

- I think he killed
these people.

- What potentially
inspired him to do this?

- I think he wanted to
make a million dollars,

and I think he has
some bug up his ass

about Johnson & Johnson.

And I think he wanted to
get back at LeAnn's boss,

who stiffed her out
of her paycheck.

In some way, he
was trying to kill

three birds with one stone.

- I was one of the
agents assigned

to the Tylenol murders in 1982.

- When you start delving
into Lewis's history...

- Revenge.

He's into revenge.

- It's thematic
throughout his life.

- That's correct.

- New information has
surfaced in New York City

that raises still
more questions about

James and LeAnn
Lewis's connection

with the Tylenol
murders in Chicago.

While the Lewises
lived in Kansas City,

they had wanted to
sue a hospital there

after the death of their
five-year-old daughter,

Toni Ann.

The girl had Down syndrome
and a heart condition,

but there were reports

that the Lewis's
connected the death

with hospital medication

manufactured by
Johnson & Johnson,

the makers of Tylenol.

Until now, there was
no reason to believe

that the Lewis's might
still be carrying a grudge

about their child's death.

- Who is to blame for
Toni Ann Lewis's death?

- No one.

- How many autopsies
have you performed?

- Thousands in my career.

- How many autopsies
have you reviewed?

- Thousands as well.

- How many cases
have you testified in?

- Hundreds, if
not low thousands.

- Toni Ann Lewis died
almost 50 years ago.

Her father, James Lewis,
has been on a warpath...

Against Johnson & Johnson.

In your expert medical opinion,

no Johnson & Johnson connection

to the passing of
Toni Ann Lewis.

- None.

Toni Lewis's death
was a complication

of her underlying
congenital heart disease

from her Down syndrome.

After the surgery,
she had a weakness

in the wall of her aorta,
the big blood vessel

that comes out of the
heart, that ultimately burst.

This was an uncommon
but known complication

of this type of surgery.

- Our own reporting
from years ago

said maybe it was a
hospital medication.

Recent printed reports said

it was a suture failure
made by Johnson & Johnson.

If the FBI was actually
operating under the premise

that there was a suture failure

and that may have been
the motive behind all this,

what would you say to the FBI?

- If the FBI thinks that,
with all due respect,

they are in error.

- I'm going to want
you to compare

Toni Ann Lewis's autopsy
to that of Raymond West.

- The victim, 72-year-old
Raymond West,

his body stuffed
in a plastic bag

and so badly decomposed

that the coroner could not
determine the cause of death.

- Well, shit.

Okay.

The body was examined,

and no specific body
wounds could be determined.

- But the detectives noted...

- Several large lacerations
to the top and back...

- Of the victim's head.
- Yeah.

- Quote, "A specific
cause of death

was not found in this autopsy."

- Who was the medical examiner?
- Bonita Peterson.

- What do you think
of her work in the case?

- Pathetic.

- And she didn't
find it a homicide.

- No.

- I certainly would have
called this a homicide.

- Raymond West.
- Oh, yes.

- So Jim Lewis goes over there,

needs $5,000,

sees that Raymond West
has died from aspiration,

and decides to
cut up his body...

And put a bullet hole
in the bedroom wall

and go out and buy a hoist...

and put it all up in the attic.

After Raymond had
died from natural causes.

- Like the old man
aspirated and cut up himself?

- That was going to be the
defense's strongest argument,

that we could not prove
how Raymond West died.

We were stuck with
Bonita Peterson's

medical examiner report.

Just another one of the...

- Sad.

- Fuck-ups that
plagued this case.

- I left Homicide,
went to this task force.

And we met with the fraud
unit, Kansas City Fraud Unit,

who had this very interesting

multiple victim fraud,

which was identity theft
and credit card fraud.

The uniqueness of this case was,

in certain parts of Kansas City,

the mail was delivered
by a mail carrier

to rows of rural mailboxes.

Every once in a while, he'd
come to a row of mailboxes,

and there'd be an
extra mailbox at the end.

And it'd be standing
alone on a pole

with a big pot of
concrete below it.

And there'd be mail,
all kinds of real mail.

But this mailbox just popped up.

What are things in
common with these people?

And we'd go, where do
they get their hair cut?

Where do they go
to the grocery store?

Where do they wash
their car... just everything.

Who does their taxes? And
bang, who does their taxes?

James Lewis.

And we put up a stationary
surveillance on that box.

And over the radio...

I'm sitting doing other
things in the office.

Over the radio,
I hear, he's here.

He's picking up mail.

And they started
taking pictures.

I said, God damn it.
It's Jim Lewis again.

So we blitzed over
to Troost, his house.

And there in the driveway
was his station wagon

with a mailbox sticking
out of the back of it.

We decided, let's go
ahead and, you know,

get a search warrant, see
what we find in the house.

We took pictures
of a lot of the stuff

we could not seize.

- Was there any indication that
he was researching poisoning?

- I've heard that.

- But you can't
say whether or not.

- I can't, no.

- Richard Shollenberger,

the U.S. Postal
Inspector at the time,

kept these pictures

from the mail fraud raid on
Lewis's Kansas City home.

Mr. Shollenberger says a book
on poisons was found that day,

and Lewis's
fingerprints were found

on a page detailing cyanide.

- But once the search
warrant was executed

and the arrest warrants
were obtained for mail fraud

and for the land fraud,
Lewis disappeared.

- Vanished.
- Vanished, he and LeAnn both.

- Gone.
- Gone, with their car.

- In '78, you think you got
him for murder and fraud.

A couple of years later,
you think you got him

for a massive amount of fraud.

And then boom, he's gone.

- Sure enough, he
popped up again.

- Another strange twist tonight

in the investigation
of those seven deaths

from poisoned Extra
Strength Tylenol capsules.

- It was him.

I mean, you know,
it's a full face picture.

We were on an
airplane three hours later

with everything up to Chicago.

- The Kansas City
murder connection

is what caused authorities in
Chicago to take a second look

at the extortion letter
and begin forming

a psychological
profile of the man

who may have written it.

- They took another
look at our evidence.

- They took another look at a
fingerprint you guys weren't...

- Able to identify.

- And what did the FBI find?

- That that fingerprint was a
thumbprint of James Lewis.

- And that thumbprint
was on the hoist

that hoisted the dead man's body

into the attic and crawl space.

- My detective was with
the evidence in Washington

when they discovered the
fingerprint matched Lewis.

- Couldn't you recharge
him for murder then?

- I think the case
was resubmitted.

- Why didn't that go anywhere?

- Can't find the hoist.

- You can't find the hoist.

- That's what I was told.

All I know is, when we
came back from Chicago,

we were in the chief's office.

And the property room
commander came up

and had to tell the
chief, I can't find it.

Oh, yeah, it was a lot of
yelling and screaming, yeah.

There's no doubt about that.

It has bothered
me for a long time.

So...

- Convicted extortionist
James William Lewis,

who tried to cash in
on the Tylenol murders

goes free today on parole.

- After his release, Lewis
settled in greater Boston

and was connected
to yet more crime.

- In 2004, Lewis was charged
with rape and kidnapping.

That case was dropped.

- What are the odds
they'd talk to me?

- I think it's zero.

He doesn't... he's not
going to talk to you.

I mean, good luck, but
he's not going to talk to you.

and he knew right away

was Lewis, for Christ's sake.
