In 1995, Acácio had a dream.

He walked hand in hand with a man and a woman across an all green field.

2012, Saturday of Carnival.

I tried to fold the newspaper Acácio had bought
early in the morning, as he sat next to me.

He had just finished bathing and his back was wet.

He said he had to tell me something.

I'm HIV positive.

He said in a weak tone.

One day before he got the exam result, Acácio had a dream.

He was walking hand in hand with a man and a woman.

Try as he might, Acácio could not identify
the faces of his fellow travelers.

It was like misshapen masses.

They walked until they reached a beach.

To reach the sea, they had to go down the stairs to the sand.

Acácio went down the stairs, and with each
step he feels that the end is farther.

As he goes down, the stairs disappear.

Acácio shouts to his companions: come here, come here!

But they do not answer.

Acácio insists: there is no way I can return!

They just stare at him.

He continues down to the sand.

He walks to the sea.

And when he looks back, Acácio realizes that there is no one else.

He's alone.

Aren't you going to say anything?

I didn't know what to say.

Can I ask you something?

He nods yes.

Were you afraid of dying?

No, I was afraid of getting sick.

I met Acássio on a dating chat room.

After three sentences with objective questions
and answers, we decided to meet.

I checked near the theater. In case he missed the meeting, I could
watch a movie and the bus ride would not be lost.

Wanna go for a walk?

I said yes, despite hating walks.

A week later we met again. We had sex for the first time.

Acácio likes his daily routine.

In the morning he usually takes a dip in the sea.

In the afternoon, he exercises.

He always sleeps with five pillows across the bed.

On Saturdays he cleans his place, and
after lunch he takes a nap in the living room.

At night, before bed, he takes the medicines.

One large blue pill and two small white ones.

It has always been like that.

The medication makes him dream a lot.

Some dreams have become constant.

There's a gun inside the glove compartment of the car.

Four years after the diagnosis, Acácio started to lose weight.

After a tense year of comings and goings to
the hospital, he thought it was his turn.

It seemed he only had one more year to live.

Acácio decided to celebrate his last birthday.

Everyone was surprised. He never liked to throw parties.

He called his friends.

Everyone was there.

He hired a band that only played lively music.

At midnight, the great moment. Here comes
the cake, the band plays happy birthday.

Happy birthday to you, from good friends
and true, from old friends and new...

...may good luck go with you, and happiness too.

The most banal song may have the most melancholic lyrics.

Three days later, Acácio was hospitalized.

There was still a piece of cake in the refrigerator.

João who loved Teresa.

Who loved Raimundo.

Who loved Maria.

Who loved Joaquim.

Who loved Silvia.

Who loved Ana.

Who loved Zeca.

Who loved Rita.

Who loved Fábio.

Who died of AIDS!

Two weeks later, Acácio left the hospital.

His body began to respond well to treatment.

Since that time, Acácio has a completely normal life.

Acácio only started speaking at the age of two.

His grandmother used to give him
water to drink in the rattle.

As a teenager, he accepted to join the choir in
the meeting of schools of the region.

At home, when he told his mother,
she said: singing?!

But you have no voice!

Acácio gave up his musical career and
joined the school's theater group.

His first character: the Fox in the play of The Little Prince.

To his surprise, the character was successful

In the forest, Acácio is pursued by two men with an ax.

In 2013, on a Sunday morning, Acácio wakes me up.

It was not even 7am. He had severe
pain in his arm and chest.

It was a heart attack.

Acácio was cold.

I wanted to go to a hospital but he preferred to wait.

At 5pm, when the pain had stopped,
he decided to go to the doctor.

Acácio had five saphenous bridges and
part of the heart remains dead.

The next day, when Acácio was still in the hospital
awaiting surgery, I returned to his house.

It was the first time I'd been there without him.

On the computer table, I found a note
with his brother's and his doctor's phone.

There I understood Acácio's
answer that carnival afternoon.

Were you afraid of dying?

No, I was afraid of getting sick.

I never questioned why Acácio preferred to write a note
with phone numbers instead of going to the hospital.

Maicon had a dream.

It was a party day and when everyone was
getting ready to leave, I decided to go to the bathroom.

Everyone waited in the living room. Maicon
went to see what had happened.

He knocked on the door and had no answer.

He knocked again and nothing.

He then realized I was feeling sick.

He managed to open the door
and there I was lying on the floor.

He tried to take me to the car, but with every
step he took, me, Acácio, would get older.

Before reaching the door, I was just
skin and bone in his arms.

Maicon felt my life go away until there was nothing left.

The next morning he told me his dream. He wanted
to know if that dream meant anything.

I said no.

I thought of telling him of how much this
image he dreamed of me is wrong.

But I understand. After all, you just have to turn
on the television to see the images of my death...

Even if they make no sense.
