Some people think we're crazy,

but we're not.

It is a log cabin inside a greenhouse.

It's not your standard house,
standard setup.

The skate park takes up 85 percent
of the house.

It's going down my shirt.

We're going to make this house
into our mid-century dream home.

Basically, the timeline is a lot shorter
than it seems.

It's grueling.

I'm Heidi, this is my husband, Matt.

We live in Everett, Washington.

We love old cars.

We love vintage clothing,

you know, anything that's like 1950s.

Anything that smells like a mothball,
basically.

We've been together for 25 years.

Painful, long years.

We own a vintage clothing store
and a tattoo shop.

Then we have a retirement home/vacation
home, kind of our getaway home,

over in Pateros, Washington, which is
about three and a half hours away.

It's just, like, on the river.

It's quiet, it's peaceful.

We go to Hawaii a lot so we wanted
to kind of bring Hawaii here to Pateros.

We're going to convert the sunroom
into a 1950s-style tiki lounge.

We'll knock through a wall
and fit sliding glass doors,

So you can walk out
onto the terrace.

We'll fit a set of sliding doors
so you can walk out onto a raised deck.

We really want to keep
this covered porch

but it needs a lot of work.

We're going to have to redo the railing,
redo the flooring.

Basically we want to make it
so that you can walk from the deck

into the tiki room.

It's definitely going to have
just a way more open feel.

We want it to be
that old-school tiki vibe.

Where you can have a cocktail,

Then have it go out onto the deck,
we can just walk out and go to the pool.

Basically, the timeline is really
a lot shorter than it seems.

We're only guaranteed our weekends
to come out and work on the place.

Hi, guys!

I could see about $8,000.

I think it'll take 4,000
because I'm pretty cheap.

So... I'm a bargain hunter.

Pateros is a small, small town.

They're probably just not used to
seeing heavily-tattooed people.

Well, if you're coming out,
moving here from a big city,

you're going to get a culture shock.

People here are not overly friendly.

They're friendly,
but they're not overly friendly.

It is important to be accepted
in a small town setting like that.

Basically, once this thing is done,
we're going to have a huge party.

It's going to be awesome.

Sometimes we stand out
a little bit.

I think it's important that everyone
understands we're just normal... people.

My parents are definitely passionate
with this old vintage style.

I'm more into newer things,
new technology.

Levi is definitely a normal 20-year-old.

He does say things like,
"Are you a waitress?"

Or, like, "Are you going to the diner?"

My parents are probably the first
ones to throw a tiki party.

And I think the locals might be
a little weirded out by it.

But I guess we'll see what goes on.

Maybe you start pulling out the nails.

That's okay, I'll get it.

Matt is a workhorse.

He gets things done.

And he's very talented
with woodwork.

He's, like, an amazing carpenter.

Matt's brothers have all come
and done a lot of work, too.

All of his brothers have been
really great at coming out here.

Today we're putting on
the ledger board.

So that we can... put up the deck.

Yesterday we worked
on the sunroom demolition.

So today... we have no sunroom.

This is what we have left.

Gone. Goodbye, sunroom.

It's completely gone.

We work from the moment we wake up
to the moment we go to sleep.

It's grueling.

We only have a couple weeks to do
this because we want to have everyone over.

Before it gets too cold
and we can't use the pool.

That might be tough
in the timeline.

Too many houses produce waste
and consume energy.

Our house isn't like that.

From the outside,
it's a little bit strange.

You just see
something transparent.

It's exciting to come home
because there's always something new.

It looks like a glass box,
but it's so much more.

It is a log cabin inside
a greenhouse.

It took me three years
to build the log house.

Three really long years, yes.

This house is very special

because it extends the growing season.

The house produces
a lot of vegetables.

We have different herbs,

Tomatoes and cucumber.

It makes me really happy.

My inspiration to build this house

came after I'd been to a lecture
about permaculture,

That you build a house
and connect it with a greenhouse.

So you can have the garden
very close to the kitchen.

That you could use the house
as an eco-cycle system

and live in the Mediterranean climate,
in harmony with nature.

So why not?

We have five bedrooms.

A kitchen connected
to living room.

Upstairs is like
an outdoor terrace.

All the houses in Sweden
have closed roofs,

and we wanted some light in,

so we just made a big opening
in the center of the house.

You want to build a house,

And you want to have a career
at work, and you want to have children,

relaxed relations with your wife...

- Yeah.
- At the same time!

It's not possible.

We were lucky to get through it.

The ventilation system works
with rooftop windows.

The sensors react on temperature
and on rain.

So it closes if it's raining
and opens if it gets hot.

Today, it's like four degrees outside,

and, like, fifteen, twenty degrees
on the inside.

This is where the magic happens.

We collect all our waste water
and toilet water into those tanks,

process it into diluted nutrient water,

and we pump it up to the plants.
Feed the plants with toilet water.

The whole idea about having
this toilet water surrounding our house

was like, "No, no, no!
I'm not going to have that!"

But, after understanding
the whole concept,

I realized that it must be
the way back to nature.

It's moments like this that I forgive
my husband about the toilet water.

Some people think we're crazy.

But we're not.

We're not that strange.

We're quite normal.

If you save energy
and if you save the planet,

that should be the normal path.

This house,
it's good for your heart and your soul.

II think it's
the perfect place to live.

The last few weeks,
we've done a couple things.

We added a deck off of the front,

and the sliding glass doors
off of the back,

And the pool's done!

We painted the whole house
the other day.

I was going for a little bit more
sea foamy color.

And it came out a little bit
more minty.

I like mint. It's just a little brighter
than I thought.

We still have quite a bit to do.

Well, we haven't got very much sleep
'cause we've been... working a ton,

you know, just kind of trying
to keep up with everything

and get it all finished in time.

So this will be our tiki room.

We'll be taking down
all this ceiling stuff.

Then after we're done doing this,
we'll start putting thatching on.

It's going down my shirt!

Oh, my god.

I don't think the locals around
here have ever had a tiki party.

We'll have it as a housewarming.

We want the sunroom to be done

so that, when they come,

it's kind of an area that they can go
and have a cocktail, hang out.

It'll be fun having a lot of people over
that have never been here

and that we don't really know that well.

It's super important that people
welcome us into this community.

If you're going to retire somewhere,
you'd want it to be warm and inviting.

I do everything in town.

So it's important to me
not to have someone think

that we're some city folk jerks,
you know, or something like that.

Morning!

- What you got going?
- I'm checking out paint today.

All good times.

You see what color
I painted the house?

- Oh, yes, it looks really good.
- Yeah, not a little too bright?

Matt says it might be too bright
for the neighborhood.

But it's okay. You guys are also welcome,
when we get the sunroom done.

We're going to have a tiki party
in a couple more weeks.

But you've got to wear a Hawaiian shirt.

Hawaiian shirt?

I'll bring you one.

"Oasis". It sounds so
tropical paradise"!

- Actually that's...
- That's pretty close.

I do like that.

If he doesn't like it, then...

I'll use it on another part of the house.

I think you would see the mint
and that color.

It could be like... Pow! Pow!

- I'm okay with "Pow! Pow!"
- It's a lot of "pows".

I don't really care
what the norm is,

and I don't care what
the average person is comfortable with.

I'm comfortable with doing...
whatever I want!

When you're doing ocean colors,
it has to have a pop to it, you know?

When you're doing tropical paradise,
it can't be... you know... boring.

As if we needed more attention.

This was Heidi's idea,
to use thatching.

They're going to sit pretty flat
on the wall.

It just gives a lot more texture
to the room.

- The shadow box will cover up all those.
- Yup.

We created this shadow box
with a shelf that we already had.

As much as I'd like to believe
that I'd have a week.

To sit back and relax
and enjoy this thing before the party,

just realistically it's not the way
it will probably turn out.

We'll be busting our tails
right up until the very, very minute.

There's quite a bit of work
to get done between now and then.

I live in a small village
called Terrington St Clement.

To the outsider,
it looks like not a lot goes on here.

We've got a little village shop,
a post office, a baker's...

That's about it, you know?

I just love the fact my house looks
so ordinary from the outside.

But, when you actually come in
through the doors,

you've got the last thing you'd expect
to see in a house in a village in Norfolk.

It's not all quite what it seems.

I've built a skate park
in my living room!

It's brilliant!

Most days, I get up, I come in here,
put some music on.

I have a cup of tea, get my
skateboard out, and have a quick go.

I go to work. And then, when I get in,
it's the same sort of thing, really.

We have been together around 18 years now,
on and off.

There are times
when I definitely do raise my eyes to it.

Do I want a massive bedroom? No.

I want a skate park...

just outside my bedroom door, please.

I'd say the skate park takes up
80, 85 percent of the house.

I just live in a tiny bit at the back.

Through from the kitchen,
this is the lounge.

The living area basically links
straight through to the skate bowl

just the other side of this wall.

If you came straight up the drive into
this part of the house, you'd never think

there was a skate park next door.

It's not your standard house,
standard setup.

I have to climb a ladder to go to bed.

- You've grown to love it.
- I am growing to love it, yeah.

- I am.
- All right.

It's all part and parcel
of what comes with... Peter Pan.

When he first bought the place, it was
an old youth club, and it was great.

It was just this huge,
vast open space,

And he wanted a skate bowl.

This is kind of where the ramp originated,
Thrashers "build your skate ramp" book.

This was kind of the inspiration,

The patterns, the shapes,
the wood, the texture.

Yeah, that's the one
that got us going, really.

- What's up, man?
- How you doing?

I didn't build it entirely myself.
I had help from one of my mates, Paul.

Remember when we started?

Snooker table there.

Skating... round the snooker table...

- Yeah, I know..
- ...in the background.

When I first walked in, I just thought,

"It's a dusty mess.

It's full of old stuff.

What's the plan?"

We'd spend quite a lot of time
trying to design different features,

and, um, actually the construction side
was, technically, pretty challenging.

We spent a lot of time doing it.
Hours after work, hours at weekends.

A lot of sweat, a lot of long days.

It was a labor of love, for sure.

I guess it will never be done.

There'll always be stuff to do,
whether it's repairing a hole

or trying to find few extra square
feet to expand into or put a platform in.

It's never-ending.

I think the DJ booth needs
a little something now.

We have a skate night once a week.

You see it from the outside
and it's just a big village hall.

When I came in,
it just blew me away how good it was.

A lot of people come from all over,
from hours away,

just to have an evening in here.
It's just awesome.

My boyfriend said, "If we ever win
the lottery, get loads of money,

first thing we do,
we're building a skate park in the house."

This is everything.

I know the enjoyment it gives
to all of the others that come round.

What piece of furniture could you get
that would do that?

Winter came a little bit earlier.

So this might be the coldest tiki party
I've ever had.

We've been over here every spare
moment, all of our weekends,

hundreds and hundreds of hours,
it seems like, working on this project.

It's been two hard months,
but we're finally here,

and it's finally finished,
so we're excited.

Our tiki sunroom is transformed.

You'll feel like
you're in some kind of tropical oasis.

It feels good to be accomplished,
finished, complete.

Everything is just perfect.

This room is quintessential tiki.

A pufferfish...

Rattan, bamboo furniture,

The old souvenir fork and spoon.

Heidi had chosen this, um, coral color.

Maybe a little more pink,
a little more peach?

Not sure.
A little bit outside of our comfort zone.

Not my comfort zone, his comfort zone.

Well, mine, mostly.

What I wanted was a space we could
actually just come in and relax, you know,

and enjoy the old vintage things.

And the view.

And, clearly, the view, you know.

Being able to look out this window,
and to the mountains and the water,

Is really one of the most important
parts of this room, you know.

It's going to be
a lot of fun tonight.

I just want everyone just to have
a good time and enjoy the space.

I don't really know much about
tiki parties, but I'm hoping to learn.

- Heidi, how are you?
- Hey!

- Good!
- You look great!

- Oh, I'm so glad you came.
- Good to see you.

You look fabulous, Teddy! Come in!

It's truly a step back into the '50s.

- I love your decorations.

- Yeah, it's a little lamp.

Oh, and the glasses up here!

I know, I like that one
with the lighting under it.

- With the lighting.
- Yeah.

- You've outdone yourself.
- Tiki rooms are supposed to be layered,

And have lots of textures.

I feel like I'm in Tahiti.

- There you go.
- And I've never been!

Yeah! Exactly!
That's exactly the thinking.

Like when you're sitting in here
and there's snow outside,

You can feel like
you're in tropical paradise.

It wasn't at all what I expected,
and I am so glad I came.

It's so beautiful, and to see someone's
vision come true is just inspiring.

This is totally tiki.

They built this shelf mirror
into the wall.

That is really awesome.

Looks beautiful.

I've never been
into this style of house,

but it is actually really beautiful.

Matt and Heidi have done
an amazing job.

I would guess it's probably
the first tiki party in Pateros,

And, yes, it's a big success.

And welcome to the community!

As thrifty as Heidi and I
typically are,

We came out pretty easy at about
seven to eight grand, I would say.

It'll probably be, I don't know,
at least another year.

Before we're finished completely
with this house.

We have lots of plans.

So, having the sunroom
will be nice,

'cause then we can enjoy it
while we rip apart the rest of the house.
