My house, from the outside,
looks like every other down the street.

You never would know passing by
what was on the inside.

When you open door,
everybody say, "Oh, wow.

It is so different."

We want to transform a small,
narrow space

into a multifunctional space.

If these mobile walls don't work,

then the apartment makes no sense.

It's really hard to move.

This is Barrio de las Letras.

Pilar and I have lived here
for many years.

We have a restaurant
called Terramundi.

Pilar also has a bakery
called Pandepi,

which is also very well known.

My husband's restaurant
is 20 meters away...

...and we've got the apartment
next door.

It was very small, 65 square meters.

It has two big problems,
very low ceilings and no light.

Pilar and I have a marvelous plan

to change a small, narrow,
dark and low space

into a large dynamic space
filled with light,

with two bedrooms,
two bathrooms,

and a kitchen in the heart
of the home.

The bedrooms are created
with custom-made moving walls.

During the day,
we can hide the beds.

We can fold the walls
like origami,

perfect for guests
and having parties.

We've been designing this for a year.

We think that the construction

shouldn't take much longer
than 10, 11 months, maximum.

I think the final budget will be
between 60, €70,000 more or less.

It's a radical idea,

because it's a new idea
and people haven't heard of it.

Many people you tell find
it shocking.

All spaces in the city center
are very small.

Every square meter is gold,

so we had to make the most
out of every meter

as though it's treasure.

The idea is to increase
the capacity of Gerardo's home

by up to 60 percent.

There's almost no light.

There's a tiny window
at the front.

With fixed windows,
no light would ever come in,

and we're going to try
not to block the light

entering the whole apartment.

So the new bedroom will be here, Gerardo.

You'll have this module,

which comes here
and turns like this, clack, pack.

This is a very new
and experimental project for us,

and we want it to go perfectly.

Gerardo is my stepfather.

He is a very young person.

Sometimes I think...

..."This guy is 65 years old
and he's younger than me."

I'm more of a grandad than him!

As Gerardo and Pilar
get older,

I think getting the beds out
and moving the walls will get difficult.

I always say to them,

"Why do you get yourselves involved
in more things, into more jams?"

We've taken a long time
to do the plans,

but now this is the defining moment

where everything that's on paper
is going in the apartment

and it's becoming real.

We're not used to doing
this type of furniture

for this kind of home.

It's definitely a challenge for us.

Wow, it's so big!
It looks so big here.

The biggest challenge is to make sure
all the mechanisms.

And all of the materials fit
together so that works properly.

It's really hard.

It needs to be adjusted.

With the slats, mattress,
pillows, and everything,

I think the system will move a lot better.

I'm feeling 50 percent positive and 50 percent negative. On one hand,
I'm calm because the rhythm of the constructions is going quite well,

but there are things
I don't think will work.

One of the problems is that

the bed is very heavy and stiff
when you open it.

This is a serious problem
we have to solve.

I'm Kelly Eden
and I'm from Hollywood, California.

I've been a fine artist
my entire life,

and I also model for tattoo
magazines and stuff like that.

My house from the outside
looks plain, ordinary.

Looks like every other apartment
down the street.

You never would know passing by
what was on the inside.

Every time somebody comes
into the house,

There's always this initial just
shock when they walk through the door.

There's really no word
for the style that I have.

So I think doll house is kind
of a go-to.

It's really what other people call it
when they walk in.

I've even created
kind of a space for my guests.

I have bunk beds in the back.

The whole design is just supposed to be
a dollhouse in itself,

and that's why we have the window there.

They have their own TV.
They have a DVD player.

And of course a Super Nintendo console
because I think that's really important.

This is the same Super Nintendo
that came from my childhood.

I got it when I was five years old.

Go get it.

The chandelier actually came
from my family home,

and this is the same chandelier
that me and my family ate dinner under

for about 25 years.

My mom replaced the chandelier,

And she had it sitting
in the garage,

And it kind of broke my heart because it has so many memories.
So I took it home with me and I completely redecorated it.

I polished it up. I painted it.
I put flowers on it.

I even rewired it and put a dimmer on it,

and now it has a brand new place
at my home.

So one of the highlights
of the house,

and this is something
people always just look at,

and they ask,
is the carousel horse.

You really can't miss it,

and it really is my favorite piece
of the whole house.

I feel like this is just the most,
like, epic piece that I have here.

I found the horse
through an auction on eBay

and when I originally found it,
it was at seven dollars,

and I was so excited.

I just though this horse,
like, it's meant to be with me.

It has all my colors, it has all my style,

with the flowers
and everything like that.

And I was relentlessly,
like, keeping track of it.

There was one person bidding against me,

so by the end of it ended up being $700,

but it's totally worth it.

My bedroom is my favorite part
of the house.

I just have like all these
different elements from my childhood.

Like I have anime action figures,

dolls, the goat here.

Even the stag heads.

The stars, for example,
those are handmade.

So I had to, like,
craft each and every star.

Do the strings, paint them,
then put the glitter on them,

and then get on a ladder and hang
each and everyone around the room.

And that alone probably took me
hours and hours and hours.

I've been collecting figures

from my favorite anime video games
since I was about 12 years old.

Some of them I even have hanging
from a fish wire,

so it kind of looks like
they're flying through the stars.

So behind me is
my great-great grandmother's vanity,

and this, I think it's close
to a hundred something years old.

It was always in my room as a kid.

It was brown. It was broken.

It had like all these water stains
on it, and I took it home.

I fixed up all the broken patches,

and then I painted it,
and it's the best thing ever now.

Every single room in the house,
even the closets,

are pastel and pink and themed...

except one room.

My name is Dre Ronayne
and I am Kelly's roommate.

My room is very like spooky
and whimsical and creepy.

My biggest inspirations...

...were kind of Hollywood glam,

but also Tim Burton. That's kind of a shock
when you open the door.

It might be haunted.
I'm pretty sure it's haunted.

So I was talking to the landlord

about letting me switch out
the the oven in the kitchen.

Can't we just have one black thing
in the kitchen?

Moving in with Kelly really
open my eyes

to how important it is to have
a house that makes you happy,

whether it's the whole house
or just your room,

somewhere that you feel safe

and is a reflection of you, really.

That inspired me to make my bedroom like this
as well. So I was thinking, what if someday.

I want both of us to move into
like a giant mansion,

But the whole mansion is black,

and then you have
your own section that's all pastel.

What would you think about that?

I would rather die.

Well, the flat is
three quarters finished now.

The building is very problematic

because there are joists
and beams everywhere.

All the systems
need to be covered.

So they can't be seen, of course.

It's all constantly changing.

I've hardly slept
the last few nights

because after all these months,
almost a year of work...

This is the crucial moment.

Now we're going to see
if this really works.

I'm pulling it
and it's really hard to move.

It's difficult for me
to move it.

I see you have to pull hard.

It opens, but it's difficult.

Now we're under pressure,

because the moving walls are the most
important part of the project.

It's a big problem...

...because if these
mobile walls don't work,

Then the apartment
makes no sense.

With one person, it moves well,

but with 200 kilos, more or less,

it doesn't move as well.

So it's the wrong type of wheel.

We're looking for a different wheel,

a harder wheel,

which doesn't absorb as much
friction from the floor,

and rolls better
so the walls move more smoothly.

It's construction chaos
at the moment.

We are from Moscow.

In 94, we moved to America.

Our house, it would be
different from the rest around here.

For people who are just the walking by,

they would never know
what's going on inside.

When you open the door
and come to this house,

everybody say:
"Oh wow, it is so different."

First of all, why is this building?

Ekaterina always wanted to have a museum.

And we just wrote a letter
to the Masons,

saying "We just would like
to purchase this,

and we would like to keep it
as a temple,

but it's going to be temple of art."

And the Masons like this idea,

and they actually accept our offer,

even amount we offer was less
than others did.

It's been 15 years to fill it
from top to bottom

with the mural.

This house, about 10,000
square feet,

we created as a single
piece of art.

So, this is our house... Welcome.

Okay, this is our library.

No single space is left.

- No.
- Even ceiling has a sun,

there's a moon,

and all the suns
under each cabinet.

With everything in the room,
we always just run back here

thinking that's we just
forgot to turn the light off,

because it was so bright.

We love sun.

We couldn't survive without sun.

Thank you, sun.

Fifteen years ago,

price for this place
was $660,000.

Right now cost a few million.

Well, this is our kitchen.

I pick up old plates and start to paint.

Nicholas glues them,

and it has become so nice decoration.

All the art is done by us.

Nobody helps us
because you don't need anybody's help.

It's a lot of work,

but the key word for the work:
You love what you do.

- It's our life.
- It is pleasure.

This was the main hall
in the temple.

The main hall
is 2,000 square feet...

24 feet high.

It's the biggest room
in the house.

People come here,
play music, singing song,

make theatrical performance,
read the poetry.

It has 57 murals.

There's a floor space
we will start to work on.

And this is the first actually mural here.

We call it
"Creation of the World."

We just decided just to make
one mural and see how it looks like,

and we just start to do it...

Piece by piece,
little by little.

Just the main hall paint
cost more than $40,000.

It was a lot of work
to complete this hall.

Three years, 33 months, and three hours.

Working in this room
always fun.

We create this room
as an oriental tent.

A lot of flowers,

a lot of colors,

and it's looks like a tent.

The hardest part was just
assemble this flower, using five petals.

I had a helper attach one piece,

then next one.

Sometimes it was
50 kilos each,

going down, up.

It was very physical work.

First of all,
we just have a black surface

and decide the main theme
of we are going to do.

You just work on the mushrooms
and the hat,

- Yes.
- I'll work on this space.

I think it's nice to be crazy sometimes,

if you are absolutely normal,
you could not create something incredible.

This picture
is going downstairs.

This one is going to be
on the lefthand side,

and that one is going to be
on the righthand side.

When I open jar with oil paint,

I feel, "Oh!" It is best perfume.

And I think in my blood,
it is oil paint too.

Right now we came to the point
there's no more empty walls,

and we would like to purchase
another house.

I don't think
we're going to stop painting.

No.

Time for drink champagne?

We knew it would be a challenge,

but we never thought
it would be this hard.

The change is truly amazing.

It's incredible.

It's been a very intense year.
Very intense.

I've lost five kilos.
Five kilos in a year!

Five kilos?
That's what I've put on!

She's given her five kilos to me.

It's because of the stress
of the project,

but what you see in the end

- is the end of a journey.
- Yes.

A result that will last a lifetime.

I think we are going to have
some good vibes in this flat.

Let's go to our bedroom.

A problem that we had to solve

was the huge weight of the bed
and this mobile wall,

which was really hard to move.

The architects designed
new wheels,

which are tougher.

A gentle push, and it just goes.

Actually,
I'm just pushing with two fingers.

This bed had some major issues.

We couldn't lift it.
It was too rigid.

Look! It's completely
solved now.

Just with two fingers
lifting from the bottom.

Look, two fingers.

It folds up with practically no effort.

It's very easy.

And this is a little
joke. It's a joke safe.

It is a work of art
by an artist friend of ours.

It has fake passports, a gun,
and millions of euros in it.

Everything in the house
is intended for daily life.

Ironing is a part of daily life...

and the ironing board is here.

As you can see,
we're in the heart of the home.

This is the main room.

And here's the kitchen.

And here's the lounge
where we watch television.

Everything's hidden,
everything can be folded and unfolded.

These are geometric shapes,

because origami has
lots of geometric shapes.

You can see geometric shapes
on the chairs,

the mural.

Both of us cook,

so the kitchen is a very important
part of our lives.

A grill especially for meat,

a Teppanyaki grill,
an induction stove.

These three elements
with the oven

give the kitchen the potential

to make really interesting food.

Guillermo's bedroom is at the back,

you can see
all the natural light floods in,

and fills the space.

This garden generates more space
and life.

This is a vertical garden
made with natural moss.

It's totally dehydrated and free-dried,

which preserves its appearance
without needing maintenance.

There is a desk for studying,
drawers for clothes or anything you need.

All of this space like this,

which is very small.

It's a very complicated
piece of carpentry.

There have been problems,

but it's more exciting...

...because we've overcome them,

and this has been
an enormous learning experience.

The project had an initial
budget of approximately 60,000 euros.

Because of all of the innovations
we've incorporated,

the budget has increased
by about 40 or 50 percent.

If we ever have to rent
this flat,

we'd have to give
an instruction manual.

It's all very new and bright.

Now it's all open plan.

It's easier to move around the house.

And it seems much bigger.

Look how open it is.

Such a big space.

You can see there's
enough room for everyone.

We're going to throw a good party.
