The basement was just a concrete shell.

I decided it just wasn't using
the space to the maximum.

When you see the place
from the outside,

You'd never know what it's like
on the inside.

Diamonds!

This will be about the next generation,

Providing them an opportunity
to look around.

And say, "Wow, we have
another chance."

The world is crazy.

Things are happening.

Socially, politically, disasters.

Things are unraveling.

Nobody can deny it any longer.

And so is it crazy
to have a solution?

My name is Robert.

I live in sunny
Southern California.

A place that I hope
I never have to leave.

But if something were to happen
this second...

I will survive.

And if you lived here,
you would too.

We're entering this old army base.

We're about to see 575 military bunkers

originally built in 1942,

sprawling over 18 square miles
of land area.

It is approximately the size
of three-quarters of Manhattan.

What we're doing here is we're
leasing each bunker for 99 years.

This location
will accommodate 5000 people

to survive anything
and everything that may come our way

at the moment of truth.

There's no bigger complex of shelters
anywhere on the planet.

This was a primary base

for the manufacture
and storage of bombs.

In 1963, the US Army
closed the base

and left the bunkers as they are.

Okay, so we're now inside
one of the many bunkers.

It's extremely thick concrete,
elliptical shape.

They're all the same.

This bunker is shortly to become
a showroom...

completely built out.

Then we'll have interior decorating,

the mechanical life safety systems...

so that once that door closes,

if you're in here,

you can survive
from what may be happening outside.

The plan is to make each bunker

able to accommodate 20-plus
people very comfortably.

Living room, dining room,
kitchen, a theater, bathrooms, bedrooms,

and a hydroponics growing area.

The budget is about $150,000.

I don't want to build anything.

I have to.

It's a difficult site to build,

because everything
has to be brought in.

There are thousands of people
that believe

we are living
in very dangerous times.

There's going to be
an extinction-level event

for those that aren't prepared.

My mission is to build as many
shelters for as many people as possible...

in time, before the end of the world. I
was one of the artists, a photographer...

and I was fascinated
by this building.

I said to myself,
"This is incredible!"

And if one day
I wanted a studio or a workshop,

I wouldn't find anything better
than this.

When you see this place
from the outside,

you'd never guess what it's like
on the inside.

The exterior is quite cold
and industrial,

but once I go inside,
I'm in a very calm and warm place.

I think the style comes across
as baroque.

Baroque with elements of rococo,

Full of gold and quite loud.

It's like I have a little bit
of Italy here as well.

This place was completely empty.

There was nothing here,
it was like a garage.

To take photos, I would spend
entire nights painting.

I started painting one wall,

Then another wall,

And then another one.

Once I'd made the mezzanine,
I got my bed and that was it.

Having your home
and work space together.

Is much easier for artists.

Over here, we have a balcony
from the Opera Garnier.

one of the boxes at the opera.

I was in their depot
to rent some decor for an event,

and I heard they had this balcony

It was very big, it was enormous,

so we cut it down
to be able to have it here.

I added these flowers here.

This is an Italian table
with inlays and a marble design,

one of the more authentic objects
in the house.

The chairs are actually garden chairs.

They're very hard.

What's amusing is that we have
very heavy chairs here,

but these columns are very light.

They're made out of cardboard.

In here we have another room,
the guest bedroom.

Here I wanted it
to be more simple.

Quite spiritual, perhaps,
and sensual.

That's why we have Indian temples
and this Indian frame here.

And on the other side
you have the bathroom.

My sister enjoyed doing
all of this with toilet paper.

I like it a lot. It's like a cake shop.

What's amazing is that I managed
to get water flow.

Through all the pipes
that were here already.

I really like to have something
very ugly,

But also something
beautifully designed.

I find the contrast amazing. I
love these fake diamonds here.

It's nice to have loads
as an exaggeration,

because we can say we buy
wheelbarrows full of diamonds!

Diamonds by the kilo!

It's very good... Diamonds!

I like things that aren't
what they seem at first glance.

This property has
a lot of character.

I feel it has
a very strong energy.

It has life.

That's why I fell for it.

It's been a little under
two months since we started.

The framing is nearly finished.

The electrical and plumbing
are all being stubbed in,

and I'm gonna get ready
for the next phase: Fit and finish.

The goal is to have this thing
done six days from now.

Robert's expectations
are a little far-fetched.

Any time you start
a construction project,

there's always something that happens,

something goes wrong,
or something you have to re-figure.

Right now I'm waiting for Robert
to bring tools.

There's a lot of things in here to do.

You can't just go down the street
to a hardware store.

It's, you know, 30, 40 minutes away, so...

It can be somewhat frustrating
a little bit, not having something

that I needed to finish up
what I'm doing at that particular time,

but just doing what I can
until they get here,

and hopefully that'll be shortly.

This isn't my first rodeo.

I've been building shelters
for a decade.

We learned a lot with our first
bunker that we built back in 2012,

also a former military
Cold War bunker.

Built to accommodate 80 people,

it's fully loaded and locked
and ready to go.

This is a nuclear-blast proof
underground cruise ship.

So we have a dining area,
main galley.

Whatever your desire is...

...we have it.

This is a typical bedroom.

There's about 22 of them in this facility.

Four bathrooms here.

The security office.

Normally this door would be closed.

Hello. Is this the queen?

Are you guys still there?
Is there anybody there?

This shelter was built
in the early 1970s,

so we had to retrofit it
with everything.

Electrical, plumbing...

We ripped everything out
and started over.

We're replicating that now

and expanding it
hundreds of times that scale.

It's a prototype
for what we're creating here.

It's about time.

We have tools.

Tools, equipment... supplies.

We make a lot of little trips
back and forth.

But that, on the other side
of the coin, is the reason we're here.

We don't want to be in the middle
of a big metropolitan area.

We want to be
out in the middle of nowhere,

away from everybody.

People don't have
a vivid imagination.

So this is real key for us to get
this showroom unit done very quickly.

The next step will be
putting in the equipment.

The generator,
the water filtration...

Every day counts at this point.

Then we got to buy all
the furniture that's gonna go in.

The goal is to have this thing done
five days, six days from now.

This is the hard part.

I own number of property companies
in Manchester.

Most of the houses in my area
are larger houses.

It is a nice area.
Most houses here are all gated

and well looked after.

From the outside,
my six-bedroom, six-bathroom house

looks very similar
to other houses in the area.

Nobody would ever know what we've done
with the basement from the outside.

It just looks like
a conventional garage.

I've transformed my basement
into a 1500-square-foot

fully-automated entertaining space.

Plus a garage.

Six years ago,
when we built the original house,

the basement was just a concrete shell.

We just used it as a garage.

After three years, I decided it just
wasn't using the space to the maximum.

I wanted a pool table,
somewhere for the cars, and a bar.

I met an interior designer,
and he took it to a whole new level.

The turntable is absolutely
the centerpiece

of this entire environment.

You turn the corner,

and you're arriving at a jaw-dropping view

of something almost ridiculous.

A cylindrical glass trophy cabinet

with a McLaren sat spinning
within that.

We found a turntable in Germany

that was the most minimal profile
we possibly could.

Then you add on to that
the kind of details that we needed.

The glass was a tricky subject,

and there were many that told us
it couldn't be done.

When you're curving glass
of this kind of radius,

it's not easy to do
without imperfection.

The glass wasn't cheap,

and it may have been
in the region of £40.000,

but once we'd nailed that,

then the tricks, the components,
the luxury products,

kind of fell off the back of it
and it got more and more exciting.

Okay, so this is one
of the main panels.

That lets you control the brains
of the man cave.

It shows you the position
of the turntable at any one time.

It shows you the temperature
of all the different zones

within the man cave,

and lets you put the turntable on spin.

Having a turntable makes it easier
to have more cars at one time.

So from a functional point of view,
it made sense.

Okay, so leaving the main car area,

this is my wine collection.

We've got 500 bottles of my favorite red wine. It's
completely climate controlled, temperature and humidity,

to make sure the wine's kept
in perfect condition.

It's all bespoke.
This wood, for instance,

is actually oak that has been stained gray

and then lacquered in an airtight,
dust-free environment

20 times over the course of two weeks

to create this almost glass finish.

Leaving the turntable
and the wine store behind,

we come to my favorite area
of the man cave:

The games room.

We've got softer, warmer materials
to make it homely and comfortable,

but still look quite opulent.

The main thing in the games room
is this pool table.

I loved playing pool
when I was younger.

I've always fancied having
a pool table in my own house.

It's got curves very similar
to other elements in the man cave.

Almost looks like a car itself.

This table costs £30,000.

The single most expensive piece
in the basement

is the smoky quartz
that's behind the bar.

It's actually a semi-precious stone

that had to be transported
over from Italy.

It's extremely brittle,

so getting it from Italy
to the UK without it breaking

was a feat in itself.

It's actually a gray stone,

but we wanted it to be
more of an amber color,

so we've got various color films
between the stone and the lighting

to be able to create this color.

I think it was about £3000 a square meter,

and we've used quite a lot of it.

I absolutely love it.

I just think it finishes off
the entire look

that we were trying to achieve.

This is a trophy representation

of his risk, his endeavor, his hard work.

Final cost for all the works
in the basement was half a million quid.

People have said that I'm crazy

for spending this much
on a garage and a games room,

but, you know, for me, it creates
something unique in our house.

That other houses don't have.

So we're gonna go see the bunker,

the first showroom bunker...

...that we've designed to demonstrate

what can be done,
how nice it could be done,

and how things should be set up
to function properly.

This one took us a little bit
longer than we expected

because of the weather.

It's been tough,
physically tough,

and I'm looking forward
to seeing the reaction

of everybody that walks through
that blast door.

Well, this is it.

Are you ready?

It looks perfect...

and ready for whatever may come our way.

This bunker is 2200 square feet,

with about
a 12-and-a-half-foot high ceiling.

It's larger than most
single family homes across America.

As you can see,
it's fully outfitted.

This is a complete modern kitchen

with all the necessary
appliances, just like your home.

You know, we can cook for up to 24 people,

which is how many people
we can accommodate within this bunker.

Okay, this is the master bedroom.

Everything is soothing
and comfortable,

as though
you're in a five-star hotel.

In fact, it's probably better
than most people's homes.

This is one of the two bathrooms,

with a shower, your sink,
and a composting toilet.

The water is coming
from a deep underground well.

Because it's coming
from 4200 feet down,

it's filtered.

Anything that's on the surface,
you know, new radiation, let's say,

it's gonna take a long time
to get down to that level.

Well, one thing I can guarantee,
nobody's gonna be bored in this shelter.

Every shelter needs a good theater, right?

So not only has it got a comfortable
theater lounge chair,

it even reclines.

You might be wondering
where's all the food?

Where's the toilet paper?
Where's all the supplies?

They're up here.

This is the ceiling height of the rooms.

So above there we've got another
four and a half feet, all the way back,

about a 50-foot run,
on that side and this side,

so everything is stored above
out of sight.

We have a generator in the back
that runs about five to six hours a day.

Its purpose
is not to power the facility,

but to charge batteries.

Once those batteries are charged,

it'll power this complete shelter
for three to four days.

This is not camping.

This is comfort.

This is luxury.

For many years, we've been interested
in some sort of shelter.

You know, if anything were
to happen, if it would be disaster, war,

and there's crazy all around you...

...just to able to have
that piece of mind that

you have a place to go to,
that you have food, you have your clothes,

you have everything
you need there,

it's reassuring, really.

It is awesome.

Nicer than your house?

Close.

Real close, yeah.

Definitely does not look
like the outside,

that's for sure.

- Very, huh?
- This is nice.

You definitely wouldn't know
that you was underground.

So do you feel safe in here?

Yes, I would definitely
bring my children here.

I would definitely stay here.

It's a place that you could stay in
without even thinking about any of that.

- It's so nice, you know.
- Yeah.

This is the first
completed bunker.

It's one of many hundreds
to come.

What it's about is the next generation.

Providing them an opportunity
to survive,

To come out
of the shelter someday,

to look around and say,
"Wow, we have another chance."
