what we have back here.

I never intended to have 22 cats,
it just took off from there.

We didn't want to have
just a normal house.

We wanted to have something special.

We're in the city center of Maastricht,

and I used to walk here as a young boy.

Those are the bells I always heard
when I was a child.

THE COUPLE ARE MOVING BACK
TO THEIR HOME TOWN AFTER 15 YEARS AWAY

My best friend, he lived just over there.

And when we were in his room,

we just saw this big building...

and it kind of intrigued.

It was a residential place
for nurses.

So they all had small rooms
with a bed and a closet, and that was it.

It took us ten seconds, almost,
to say yes, we're gonna do this.

From the outside, you will
never fall in love with this building,

because it's so boring.

It looks horrible.

But you get in
and it's like, "Wow."

Right from the beginning,
we saw the opportunities.

We saw what we can do with the building,

and give it a new life,
make it something special.

21 DORM ROOMS WERE KNOCKED DOWN
TO CREATE A 2 STOREY LUXURY APARTMENT

The plan is to restore
the top two floors.

Each floor will be
entirely open-plan.

The apartments will be
decorated with a '70s-inspired theme.

This is where you come
into our private area.

We had to start by removing
all the inside walls

to reveal the concrete.

This made the space
as big as it could be, the outer shell.

Everything is going to be open.

Here is going to be the kitchen,
a big, very comfortable couch.

We were inspired by the '70s.

Nice, warm colors,

sunken living area.

We don't only have the '70s theme,
we also have mid-century stuff,

and also new stuff.

It's a revival, almost.

Vintage is very hip. It's a trend.

I'm really excited about this space.

When we bought this, we didn't
want to have just a normal house.

We wanted to have
something special.

I love to go to places
like this, because you see something,

but you don't know if around
the corner, there's something special,

and I hope he can settle it.

I'm 18 years old,

and I live with my parents
in Victoria, B.C., Canada.

From the street, the house looks
like a regular house in Victoria.

what we have back here.

THE PENALTY BOX

My dad built the ultimate hockey
fan cave In our backyard.

KENN - LANDEN

This used to be the original fan cave.

This is all dedicated
to the Chicago Blackhawks, this section.

This is one of my favorite
NHL teams.

And this is the bigger part of the cave.

This is dedicated to everybody else
that people cheer for,

- from the Canucks to the Predators...
- All of hockey.

...to Pittsburgh, women's hockey.

You know, because everybody cheers
for another team,

so we just didn't want to make it
all our team. It wouldn't be right.

We live on an island
in the Pacific,

but our NHL games are over in Vancouver.

There's only two ways
to get to the mainland.

Either a $200 ferry boat ride,
or a $350 flight.

I thought this is ridiculous.

- Got to be a better way.
- There's got to be a better way.

- Let's bring the game to us.
- We brought the game to us.

It just clicked.

Hockey takes over, anything hockey.

First it was our daughter's playhouse.

So he turned that into his little
cave, but it was too small.

So then he had to make it bigger.

We used to have nice, beautiful grass.

It was nice to relax back there.

I give up a lot for the cave.

There's approximately 1,733
hockey stick shafts

used for the floor alone.

This is a wow factor in the cave.

I don't think this has ever been done.

If you had to buy every stick
and then chop it,

you're looking at a $225,000 floor,
which is insane.

Well, Kenn likes to build furniture
with hockey sticks.

You can do many things
with a hockey stick.

Well, obviously,
play hockey, for one, but...

this lamp, it's just a hockey helmet.

We made this wine rack here.

We've got stars we hang up
at Christmastime.

It's a bench, but then you pull it up...

Now it's a table.

We call this
the ultimate hockey love seat.

It's an actual ice hockey goal net.

THE LATEST ADDITION TO THE CAVE
IS A MINIATURE HOCKEY RINK

It just evolved,

and now the slogan is around
the neighborhood with friends and family:

"Are you caving tonight?"

I don't know anyone who loves hockey
more than my dad and my brother.

They're totally crazy about it,
their lives revolve around it.

There's always something happening
in the ultimate hockey fan cave,

whether it be, you know, new furniture,

building a giant 9-foot
goalie stick, you know.

There's always something going on.

I don't think that the hockey cave
will ever be done,

because as long as
there's room in the yard

that he can expand, he'll expand.

He's lucky that I do really like hockey.

12 WEEKS INTO THE BUILD
UTILITIES ARE BEING INSTALLED

We are creating a two-level
apartment in the style of the '70s.

Dino is here every day.

Dino's eyes are everywhere.

He knows all the details.

If you want something personal
or custom-made, you have to be here.

They need to know what you want,

completely my wish,
or how I would do it.

Everybody is working very hard
to get everything done.

They're working on the kitchen.

Today, we have carpenters,
we have people doing the plasterwork.

This project, it's not easy, no.

There are a lot of different materials
all over the world.

Tiles from Morocco...

it's all handmade.

That makes it very complex.

Inside, everything is happening.

A lot going on, really a lot.

Today, we're going to lift the furniture.

They have to lift it very high
with a crane.

The coordination of all the teams,
it's like a puzzle.

The elevator it's small,
very small, too small,

so everything has to come
by crane.

Looks like a small crane to me.

You know? Not high enough.

It's a long way.
It's the highest level, so...

it just fits.

We hope.

This is the coffee table.

It's made of wenge wood.

It's so heavy,

and I think you need
at least five, six people to lift it.

They have to be careful
they don't hit the building,

so there has to be good communication

with the people on the balcony
and the crane driver.

There's one piece in the world,

So a damage would be a disaster.

People who do it are important,
because they have to be very careful.

They don't know how valuable
the pieces of furniture are,

and from how far away
they came.

It's not that I can go to the store
and buy a new one.

It's really nice furniture.

I don't want any scratches.

Yes.

Now they have to get it in.

Don't ruin my floor.

It's inside. They did it.

Five strong men to move the coffee table.

Yeah.

Very good.

- I'm so happy.

I hope the weather will stay like this.

MIDWAY THROUGH THE BUILD
THE ROOF HAS BEGUN TO LEAK AGAIN

One of the biggest challenges
in this old building is the roof.

They tried to fix it,

but obviously
that didn't really help.

When water comes in
where there's nice wooden furniture,

that could be damaged
by the leaking.

Every time I hear a drop,
I feel it in my heart.

The leaking definitely caused
a delay.

You cannot progress.

We only have five weeks...

and there's a lot of stuff to be done yet.

Hi, my name is Peter,
and I live in Santa Barbara, California,

and I'm a general contractor.

Santa Barbara is a small tourist
town north of Los Angeles,

and I've been living here
since 1988.

My home, from the outside,
it just looks like an ordinary

two-story suburban house.

Nothing stands out, really.

I've turned my entire home
into a paradise for cats.

Every room is connected
by catwalks and tunnels and walkways,

and it lets the cats
move around freely,

and it brings the house to life.

I do really love cats. I have 22 of them.

The house is a two-story,
five-bedroom house.

There's about 200 linear feet
of catwalks throughout the house,

and we just keep adding them.

They can run from the bottom
of the house to the top of the house

in four seconds flat.

I never intended to have 22 cats,
it just...

I got a few and I built a few catwalks,
and it just kind of took off from there.

We adopted two kittens,
and that two kittens turned into 22,

over 25 years.

The cats have a lot of places
they can go.

Their world actually is quite big,

which keeps them interested
and never bored.

All of these connect
all the rooms around us.

If you come straight through here,
this is my bedroom,

which is obviously filled
with more catwalks.

When I go to sleep,
roughly five or six sleep on my bed.

It's a little nerve-racking
sometimes at night,

'cause they like to play
at two in the morning.

So the house is a smart house,

and one of the functions it has,
it has cameras in every room.

There are 25 cameras in this house.

Each cat has their own
little hiding place.

Anywhere you are, you can...

You hear a noise,
you look at the monitor,

and you see where they are
and what they've done.

We tried to pick different decorations.

This one has an alligator.

This one connects between
the cat room and my bedroom.

When we want to keep cats
from going to different rooms,

we close it and then we lock it,

'cause they are very good
at opening locks.

If you go up the stairs,
all the rooms downstairs

are actually connected
to the upstairs rooms.

We like to give them options.

So here they can go down the spiral,

or they can continue on
up into the skylight,

or go down to these two tunnels here,

And they lead to walks
that give them a choice.

They go right, they can go down the spiral by the front door and
just go to this pot shelf that connects to the downstairs hallway.

This walk continues through a tunnel
into the master bathroom.

Come through here.

They can go that way.

There's another bridge here
that leads back there,

or they can come down these steps,

and these two tunnels
lead to the garage and the kitchen.

We put this Plexiglas cover
so the cats wouldn't sleep in the tub

and then I wouldn't have to clean the tub
when I want to use it.

Shortly after we did all this,
the cat bumped the little faucet here

and they turned on this water.

And of course, the water hit the plastic
and spilled out onto the floor,

and flooded downstairs,

and did about $40,000 damage,

and the insurance company said,
"We don't cover that."

So we cut the little square.

Lesson learned.

And that's how we learned
a lot of our catwalk lessons.

When things go wrong, you find out
what went wrong and make it right.

This was the very first catwalk
that we built,

the pole and these walks here.

We take one-inch thick wood,
and we use large lag bolts

that lag all the way through
into the studs behind the drywall,

and then we put wood banding,

and it has a lip
so the cats don't fall off.

And it gives a really solid shelf
without any visible support.

They're called floating shelves.

There are hundreds of these,
and they take time to make.

It's not like I came in and did all this
in a week or two.

Over 25 years, I'm sure
we have spent

80 or $90,000 on these catwalks.

I kept saying we'll stop here,
but we never stopped.

We're bringing these catwalks
out in kit form,

and all of that profit
that comes from those sales

will go directly to helping
defeat FIP.

FIP...

the long name
is feline infectious peritonitis,

is this horrible disease

that strikes between
one and two percent of cats.

I live here with Hiroyuki,

my housemate and business partner.

Hiroyuki likes cats,
but he's the voice of reason.

He's the one who stops me
from adopting more.

Some people think Peter is crazy.

But living in this house
is so much fun.

It's a lot of work,
but it's very, very enjoyable.

When you open one can,

every cat in the house hears
that sound.

By the time we are finished
preparing the food,

there's 15, 16 cats
hovering around us.

Okay, dinnertime. Come on.

We go through about
600 cans of cat food a month.

I feel extremely fortunate
to have a nice home that I like,

to be able to give a home
to all these cats.

I can't imagine ever moving,
so this house,

I will just keep changing
and improving and adding walks,

and maybe a few more cats,

until I can no longer get up.

I just feel very lucky.

16 WEEKS INTO THE BUILD

We are in the finishing stage,

so everybody is working very hard
to get

all the last things done.

It's still a lot of work.

I think I'm a little bit nervous.

The roof was leaking everywhere.

Now we have a few spots
still dripping.

The cactus that's coming up
right now, it's about 45 years old,

and it's two meters tall,

so that has to come up by crane.

Still need the crane till the last day.

This chandelier,
it's custom-made from London.

It's like over a hundred real glass tubes.
They have to fix it and put them

piece by piece. A lot of work.

But now they're lowering the thing
while the glass is on it,

so it's very risky.

If this one drops, then we're done.

Yes.

It's amazing to see all the final pieces.
It's all coming together.

When we bought this place,

we had a kind of vision
about what we wanted.

It was quite difficult to imagine
what it would look like.

But now that we created this...

it surpassed
our expectations, actually.

People come out of the elevator,

and they're right in the kitchen
where everything happens.

This is my biggest desire,
to have my own designed kitchen.

Everything is on my height,

where we have this beautiful table.

So I think that's why
it also goes so well with the table.

Leaving the dining room,
we get into the lounge room.

We wanted to create a sunken living room.

We faked it a little bit
by building a stone level around a sofa.

Every where you sit,
you look at this beautiful view.

You can, you know, really relax
with a glass of wine,

or whiskey on ice, or whatever.

Dino had this beautiful idea

to make this Manhattan '70s hidden bar.

You open it,
and there are Dino's favorite gins.

We like it very much.

This is the connection to the bedroom.

You could feel lost in this big bedroom,
but because of this cozy headboard,

I feel safe in this bed.

When we open the curtain,

we get into a part
of the bathroom.

We have the tub here,

a very romantic tub
with a view on the city.

And you can sit
in it comfortably...

with two people
without having cramps in your legs.

And then you go over here
to the breakfast table,

and...

the day can start again.

From the 10th floor to the 9th floor,

this is the guest area.

This whole level
has everything you need.

A small pantry.

You have a bathroom,

two bedrooms.

The colors are all very warm.

We have a lot of copper
and brownish colors,

but also the peach
colors downstairs,

and green and blue and gold.

But it's all very warm
and cozy.

I think we really achieved
a '70s look.
