Allendale is a small village
in the North East of England.

Certainly looks very, very normal
and typical of the area.

Give it another few months,
and there's gonna be some big changes.

It's gonna be anything
but ordinary.

My big dream is to open a science-fiction
museum to the public

in my house.

I'm head of Art, and I've been teaching
at a local school for nearly 20 years now.

Loves of my life would be Lisa,

Buzzy, who's three,

Matilda, who's six...

and my lifelong science-fiction
obsession and collection.

NEIL HAS COLLECTED MORE THAN 200 SCREEN USED PROPS IN THE LAST 20
YEARS I can't imagine a day without science fiction with Neil involved.

I think Neil's obsession.

Possibly could've been a bit
too much for some women.

There's monsters
all over the place, really.

I couldn't tell you how many props
are in this bedroom...

which is what this room should be,

and it is gonna be our master bedroom

when this wonderful collection
of friends of mine

disappear down into the cellar.

My house is a Georgian townhouse.

It has an original cellar.

It looked terrible when we got it,

but it had amazing potential.

I knew it had the possibility
to house a science-fiction museum.

The plan is to break the cellar up
into four sections

so that I can chronologically
detail the history of science fiction.

The walkways will be divided

using bespoke handmade panels
that I'm gonna sculpt

to create the illusion of,
hopefully, an alien spaceship.

The entire space is going
to be filled

with film props, costumes,
and original artwork.

To buy the house, we needed to put
an offer in very quickly,

And this is where
Lisa's parents came in

and got their life savings,
and just got it for us quick.

I know exactly how much they owe us,
which is a lot of money.

CHRIS
LISA'S DAD

About 170,000, I think.

When I told Chris about my plan to turn
the basement into the sci-fi museum,

I think he did think I was mad.

Sci-fi, what is it?
I don't know, it didn't...

I... I don't get it.

I really, really want to prove to Chris

that that crazy idea I had
is going to work and will work.

THE 800 SQ FT CELLAR HAS NOT
BEEN RENOVATED SINCE THE 18TH CENTURY

I'm very skeptical about the whole project,
but I've got to give him every good shot.

This is where the museum really kicks off.

Not the other door?

Not the other door.

- We're gonna take these boards...
- Okay.

...and turn these into sort of
sci-fi spaceship panels.

- And then...
- Okay. Go on.

Right? We're gonna make
sort of cubicles with them.

I thought you were putting
monsters in here.

Yes, but we make them as cubicles,

- and then they sit inside...
- Oh, so that's part of your cubicle?

Yes. And then we're gonna have
the beams free

to put LEDs and pools of light
into each bay.

You can't leave the ceiling
like that, mate.

No, we're gonna finish the ceiling off.

- Who's this "we"?
- That is you and me.

This is the start
of this science-fiction tour.

H.G. Wells, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon,
then we're gonna come up through here.

This is gonna be sort of '70s,
so it'll be the Planet of the Apes there.

We'll have Alien and Star Wars,
bits of that here.

- You've got stuff from all of these?
- Yeah, yeah.

- Original props?
- Yeah, original stuff.

And then, we're going to be starting
the Doctor Who tour.

- It'll never work, Neil.
- It will.

- It won't.
- It's gonna work. It's gonna be great.

- It's gonna be absolutely fantastic.
- No.

- Never work.
- Absolutely marvelous.

The ultimate goal is for the public
to visit in about three months.

It scares me actually...

if it wasn't successful.

So there is a lot at stake in a way.

Brie and I live in St. Charles,
Missouri, just outside of St. Louis.

We wanted our house to be original
and different than everything around us.

Our house is the biggest
shipping-container home in the world.

We have four containers on the main
floor and four on the second level.

The exterior not matching
the interior

is what throws a lot of people off.

So when they come in,
their first reaction is, "Whoa."

I'm an artist.

I look at this house as a piece of art.

It's a giant sculpture.

For the interior decorating,

We recycle and reuse materials
that were otherwise gonna be discarded.

We saved around $300,000
using repurposed materials.

Sometimes, we'll find something
that we think is really cool,

And we'll have it
for a couple of years before...

Before you find a home
or a use for it.

Originally, I saw
this giant fountain bowl,

And I was just thinking,

"Yeah, it's so ridiculous,
it'll be awesome,."

And it's our bar.

And it works great.
It's really functional.

We had a few round cable spools
sitting out back,

So that made the round countertops.

They were pretty much free.

We roughly saved about 10,000

for what we did compared to
what we would have gotten.

I think the environment
and recycling is important.

Out of all the different materials
that we discussed using for the home,

Shipping containers seemed to fit.

What we were trying to achieve
when recycling.

The day we were setting the containers,

It was shocking
that it's happening.

There was no turning back.

Cutting the walls would probably be

the single hardest task
in this whole house.

The steel was so hard,
I went through over 200 cut-off wheels.

There were days where I would
break down and cry,

because I just...
I didn't see any end in sight.

We were here 12 hours a day,
seven days a week for a year.

In total, we wanted to keep
our budget below 100,000,

but when it was all said and done,

- we spent about 135,000.
- Yeah.

The one question most people have about this
house is, "Why are the windows upside down?"

I really like in the main living space
that the arch is on the bottom.

You experience the arch.

Whereas if it was up at the top,

it would be up
out of your field of vision.

I have several favorite features
of the house.

The staircase is one of them.

These stair treads
are the same wooden wire spools

as the countertops over there.
It was just a quick sketch.

I was like, "Bam. There it is.
What do you think?"

And Brie was like... "I like that."

This is the master bedroom.

I wanted to build a cantilevered bed.

There's nothing underneath
this side at all.

It's just free-floating.

I'm actually pretty proud
of this design.

This is our own suite.
This is the master bathroom.

In here we used a piece of live edge pine.

These chains came off
a 1950s tractor.

That my plumber's grandpa
used to run.

This mirror came free
from a department store

that had a bunch of stuff left over.

It was not wide enough
to reach both sinks,

So the only way that I could make
this mirror work

was to smash it in half and separate it,

and use the two broken pieces.

And it worked perfect.

This house has opened so many doors
and so many other opportunities for us.

Yeah, I'm getting people calling me
to design their homes now,

And design maker's labs
for schools, all kinds of stuff.

My first container home client
is stopping by today, Travis.

- Hey.
- How are you? Come on in.

- Good to see you.
- Yeah, good to see you.

All right.

This is taller than I thought.

A lot of repurposed stuff.

Yeah, from wooden wire-spool tops
to a bowling alley lane

that we ended up just painting.

I like that the kitchen
is, like, nice and open,

so the person that's in the kitchen
can still be a part of everything.

Yeah, yeah.
We didn't want to block off the space.

When we got a bid to build
the house, flooring was expensive.

- Was this already here?
- Yeah, these are the original floors.

They're one-inch thick hardwood.

All we did was use a white epoxy,

And it cost a couple hundred
dollars for the whole house.

- That's so cool.
- Yeah.

Oh, wow. This looks cool.

Oh, my gosh.

I painted these cement board walls

at my studio, and then poured concrete,

And then poured a finished concrete
that won't crack...

- Okay.
- ...on top of that.

And then sealed everything in
with a clear epoxy.

I think it's great.

It doesn't feel like a cold,
industrial container house.

It felt really cool.

I thought I would like
the exterior more,

and it didn't really wow me that much.

But for me, that was part
of the charm, too.

That I was less wowed on the outside,

but overwhelmed on the inside.

The one concern is will my place
be as cool as Zack and Brie's home?

EIGHT WEEKS UNTIL THE MUSEUM OPENS

Progress for the sci-fi museum
this month.

Has included getting the ceiling
well and truly started,

but I need to do
a really good restoration job

on one of the key figures

that's gonna be part of the displays.

This is a Terileptil
from Doctor Who that I'm repairing.

And the reason it's discolored here

was that it was in a fire
on an exhibition.

It just needs
a lot of love, really.

Just what I'm doing.

Sadly, I'm not moving as quickly
as I would like,

And I'm missing targets
that I've set for myself.

Everything's taking longer
than you expect.

Just come over today to help Neil.

The ceiling's going up very well.

We should finish this half today.

The most important job I have to do
at the minute is create the panels.

That are effectively
the walls of the museum.

That guide the person
around the actual exhibit.

The basic idea of this is,

I'm trying to get the impression
of a spaceship panel...

where the doors and panels
have been ripped away,

and inside's all the ducting,

maybe a face, maybe pipes...

and it's gonna be cast in a fiberglass
which will look like metal.

And that's what...
that's the exciting bit for me.

I think without these panels
in the room,

it'd look like a very nice
Georgian cellar,

which is great, but it's not gonna look
like a science-fiction museum.

So these really are essential.

Neil's getting a bit stressed, so...

LISA

we were... so, yeah,
we're up against time pressure,

so he's asked me to come and help him.

I've never done this before.

I've got to get the master panel
to the fiberglass company,

and my biggest fear is that

the company will turn around
and say they can't cast my panel.

I'm just worried that
the level of detail I've put in...

Is not reproducible in the mold.

It's gonna take them at least
a month to turn them all around.

If there's a problem,
I'll have to start all over again.

I think Neil's taken on
an awful lot,

so he's putting himself
under a lot of pressure.

He's lived his life for this.

If he doesn't fulfill that,

I think it'll devastate him,
quite honestly.

FOUR WEEKS UNTIL THE MUSEUM OPENS

I'm very anxious now
about the fiberglassing company,

because there's a lot resting
on it.

I'm praying that they don't
just say, "We can't do it."

for motor homes, caravans,

cars, etc, etc, etc.

Usually, it's
reasonably straightforward.

This is why I'm dreading
looking at what Neil's made.

Okay, this is the... the piece.

- Got a bit of work to do.
- Right.

Things like these?

You can't make a mold
underneath something,

so you can fill it with plasticine
either side.

- Right.
- It would look the same,

but the mold can come off.

I'm hoping it's not gonna be
a nightmare.

It's like a culmination of all
my artistic ideas, in many ways,

Put into one package.

And if I failed, it would just be sad.

My name is Gregangelo.

I've lived in San Francisco
my whole life.

The neighborhood I live in
is a pretty normal, quiet place.

My house doesn't really
stand out much more

than anything else
on the street.

Like, you'd walk on by it
like any other house.

I've turned my house into a circus.

There's about 27 rooms
in this house.

In every room,
it's completely a new experience.

I've lived in this house since 1980.

When I bought this house,

the place was a total
caved-in dump.

It was bad.
It was depressing and it was miserable.

The house completely
evolved unplanned

over many, many years,
one moment at a time.

The ideas for the rooms

just pour out of me so fast,
you can't even imagine it.

I've created another world,

from being underwater,
to blasting yourself into outer space,

to everything in between,
to things that you could never imagine.

GREGANGELO HAS TURNED HIS HOME
IN TO AN IMMERSIVE THEATRE VENUE

The very first room
is what I call the Dusk Hall right here.

And here guests immerse into this room,
the curtains are closed.

We open these curtains
and we enter right into the Solstice Room.

DRINK ME

This particular room,
in its recent incarnation,

probably took about two years to complete.

And that's when I was really experimenting
a lot with the sort of Islamic...

DRINK ME

...mathematical art.

And I did all...
I completely did this entire room

with these two hands myself.

I think the kitchen was
probably one of the more difficult rooms,

Because this was actually
five rooms.

It was an old 1900's home,
so there was...

there was, like, a little pantry,
another room with the stove,

and a couple little closets...

a little laundry room.

So I just basically ripped it out
and opened it up.

The house is a labyrinth
of materials,

From glass mosaic,
to all kinds of fabrics

from all over the world,
some that we've made ourselves.

Layers and layers
and layers of artistry.

- Are you guys ready to enter?
- Yeah!

When the public come to this house
for the first time,

there's a real palpable excitement.

To this day,
I'm still the guy who leads it,

And I still absolutely enjoy
connecting with a guest.

In the beginning when I was doing these,
people would ask me,

"How much does it cost?
How do you afford it?"

And I used to always say,
"It cost a can of paint

and, like, an endless, infinite amount
of imagination and work."

And that's still pretty much
how we're operating here as artists.

If I'm passing by this house,

- I will never imagine something like this can exist here.
- It's absolutely breathtaking.

To see people have
a lovely time in my home...

to me is just... it fulfills the meaning
of my life,

of my purpose, if there is such a thing.

ONE WEEK UNTIL THE MUSEUM OPENS

The last few months have just been
incredibly stressful.

I'm not gonna lie, the actual
building work involved plastering,

It involved putting
a complete wood floor down.

One of the biggest challenges of the
project has been this fiberglass panel.

It has been very, very difficult.

Just 'cause it's complex.
It's a complex bit of work.

To just actually know
it's actually coming is amazing.

- Is it heavy?
- No, not at all.

All right, let's have a look.

Okay, wow.

Wow, that is quite something
to see everything...

wow.

That is a weird feeling, 'cause that was
all wood, clay pipe and everything,

and to see it in one block...

yeah, it's gonna look quite impressive.

Let's get it in.

Yes.

MUSEUM OPENING DAY

All the work that I've put in
is actually

hopefully gonna come to fruition.

Don't know who's gonna actually
turn up,

But I'm hoping some local people,

And also hopefully
some sci-fi fans.

I still find it a little bit odd that

people might even want to come
and look at some of this stuff,

And so I'm nervous for Neil.

I've dreamt of this.
I've literally dreamt of it.

I've walked through this in my mind.

This is the first time, so it's
quite a thing. Yeah, it's quite a thing.

For many years,
I never thought it would be possible.

Hopefully, it's gonna give people
a real surprise.

I never thought a guy like me,

very ordinary background,

would ever have a collection
of things from films, from movies,

and then be able to display it
to the public

and create an environment.

The journey of the museum kicks off
with a 1950s-style robot,

a bit like Robby the Robot
that's been beautifully blown up.

And then you move slowly through
a plethora of science-fiction classics.

Pieces from the Alien franchise,
pre-production models.

This was a piece
that was put on a whippet.

A test head, which is quite...
Quite interesting.

Right here, we've got prosthetics
from Babylon 5,

Which is a personal favorite
of mine.

One... my all-time sci-fi favorite,
I think,

is The Time Machine,
and this is a Stan Winston head.

These are things
from Marvel Comics movies.

That is a piece
of Liam Hemsworth's costume.

And this is a real favorite.

This was the missile core
that Robert Downey Jr.

Picks out for a missile
and throws in the cave.

Just things like that
are just fascinating.

This is the Doctor Who section,
and in many ways,

This is the sort of
a pièce de résistance for me.

This is my lifetime of collecting.

Of course the classic icon
of science fiction, the Dalek.

This is an icon of the show.

This is a Cyberman,
an original one.

This is probably one of
the best things here, I would say.

Really, really delighted to be able
to display pieces like this.

This is an original costume from 1970.

It's a background gorilla soldier costume
from Planet of the Apes.

A fabulous prop to have.

Then the idea is to texture the walls

to give them not just
a plan gray background,

to give the museum...

I want the museum
to be the best it can be.

It's just gonna give fans.

A chance to see these things
that they've seen onscreen,

And they've never seen before.

It's this moment of a culmination
of so much of my life and time.

I guess I'm just desperate
for them to like what I've done.

That's the flight chair
from Thunderbird 2.

What is that?

That's a rebuild of a monster
which I sculpted myself.

I'll absolutely be telling people
about Neil's collection

and recommending that they try
and get here as soon as they can.

- Don't touch it.
- I'm not touching it.

First of all, little people are buzzing.

There are still people turning up
now, which is brilliant.

It's amazing.
Better than I could ever imagine.

You open the door, and you're transported
to a different dimension, literally.

If I hadn't done this,

I would've regretted not taking
this opportunity forever more.

I'm terrifically proud
to be associated with the project.

Ultimately, against
all my better judgment,

I think possibly he's onto a winner.

Having the monsters
in the cellar is amazing.

We can sort of reclaim
the living space

and see what the house looks like
without monsters.

This is absolutely the culmination
of a lifelong dream.
