I got married
when I was 18 years old.

He was drafted during
the Vietnam War.

He came home to be with his--

be in his brother's wedding,

and we got married
in two days' notice.

Before my husband, Billy, died,
he actually said to me,

"I hope you do find someone.

I hope you get married again."

And I know that Billy--

you know, if he was here,
he'd say, "Go for it, Theresa.

Just go for it."

for 35 years.

the minute I saw you,

high school sweetheart.

We were together since

And we were married 42 years,
and he passed away.

What happened, ultimately,

was that his kidneys
were not good.

And Billy always had hope
of a kidney transplant.

But one day,
when I was at work,

he, all of a sudden,
takes a turn for the worse.

And I ran home, and I watched
him take his last breath.

- I'm so sorry.

Loss of a spouse
is the worst thing.

- Thank you for being
so understanding.

- Oh. I know...

- I'm so sorry.
- What the feeling is like.

- I know.

Neither one of us thought
this was gonna happen.

- Yeah, I know.
- We thought we were gonna

live with our spouses

for the rest of our lives.
- Yeah.

- And I'm so sorry that
your wife passed away.

- How long have you been alone?

- Oh, a long time.

My husband has been gone
eight years.

- Eight years?
- Yeah, almost nine years.

- Theresa's story was
so similar to mine.

All of a sudden,
my emotion about my loss,

just looking at her
and listening,

felt just a little different.

I didn't feel like breaking
down and crying for once.

I felt like I was talking
to someone that understood

the loss of a spouse.

Right now, I have a great
circle of friends,

but I'm lonely.

It just hit me that I haven't

it just brought back

all of these emotions,

the best day of my life

was getting married
to my husband, Mark.

that I need to feel.

in my rational mind.

He passed away.

It's been 12 years.

And it was the best day
of my life,

my three children.

the best day of my life.

So it just made me--

of my three children.

But just having on

It was overwhelming.

well, that was a year ago.

And I walked in front
of this bakery,

and the smell
of cinnamon hit me.

- And my wife used to make

cinnamon balls at Christmas.

- And that instant,
when I smelled the cinnamon,

got me just about as hard
as the wedding dress got you.

- And you didn't expect it,
right?

That's the worst of it.

- It just--it just hits you.
- It just comes out of nowhere.

you know, even though
I was sad earlier,

I still felt hopeful.

So there's joy in remembering.

But then I still have hope
moving forward.

And I think
that's really important.

- I got honors master's degree

in health education

and an undergraduate
in physical education.

As I've learned about them,
I see so much potential.

And that's why I'm here.

Today, this morning,
I got up very early.

- At 7:30, 8:00 this morning,

my sausage, my garlic.

Who doesn't like garlic?

Who don't want pepper?

And it has to stew for hours.

- Bake, not so much.

But cook? Yeah.

I like to grill.

- Oh, I love being outside
and cooking outside.

- Have you ever grilled before?

- No, I don't do this.
- She shops.

- I--I decorate a man's life
with love and joy.

We got to get the heat up
a little bit.

likes his wiener.

when he's with each person,

his full attention.

- I'm just so excited

I'm a little worried

with the other ladies.

I felt pretty inadequate.

All these women are, like,
fancy girls

and jewelry and love to shop.

And I'm like,
I spend most of my time

in a flip-flops and a T-shirt.

You know, I swim in the river.

I drink from the hose.

I swim in a horse water trough.

But Gerry makes me feel special
every time I see him,

and it's just
the way he looks at me.

I'm just drawn to him.

I'm sure every woman here
feels that,

but he really is beautiful.

- I can imagine that

a super hard day for you.

I--I remember--like,

I've only had
two birthdays--well, yeah,

I've only had two birthdays
since my husband passed away.

And I remember waking up
in the morning going,

okay, take a deep breath.

[sighs] This is a tough day.

It makes me so sad.

In fact, I have a hard time
even looking

at the pictures still.

- I got to the point--

I was sad looking at her
picture for a long time.

I mean, we had those
conversations where both of us

wanted to express to the other
that when one of us

passes away, the other
should go find happiness.

my husband said that to me

right before he passed away.

He's like,
you need to go be happy.

You're the most beautiful,
wonderful person in the world,

and you need to go
and find somebody else.

And I--I feel really selfish.

I didn't really want
to hear that,

have that conversation
because I didn't want

to believe he was gonna die.

And I was like, no, no.

I'm not listening to this.

I'm not doing this.

- And he died, like,
three days later.

- So I feel very guilty
about that one.

I think I might be
