We don't even know if he's alive

to see if a man answering

his general description
had been reported missing.

But out of unsolved
missing person cases

filed with the Chicago police,

Lieutenant Stewart and members
of her staff could find

no set of circumstances
to match their latest John Doe.

Routine also required
that a chart

of the unknown person's teeth
be sent to all dentists,

in the hope that some dentist
would recognize his patient.

But this was often a fruitless,
time-consuming task

because the number
of accurate dental records

was a very small fraction

of the three million patients
in the city of Chicago.

In the days that followed,
the Bureau of Missing Persons

could find no clue
to identity of the man

pulled out of the waters
of Lake Michigan.

Unclaimed, the body remained
on ice in the Chicago morgue.

The lifeline was alcohol.
