Takkoku no Iwaya Bishamondo Temple.

The Oshu Fujiwara Clan

expressed the concept of the
Buddhist Pure Land faith

in temples and gardens they built.

They were constructed
with the aim of creating

a Buddhist Land (Pure
Land) in the real world.

1st Clan Lord Fujiwara no Kiyohira (right),
built the gold pavilion Chûson-ji (left),

Fujiwara no Motohira (2nd) and Fujiwara no
Hidehira (3rd) Lords of the Oshu Fujiwara.

Fujiwara Hidehira gave
Yoshitsune sanctuary.

On the grounds of what is
today Mōtsū-ji temple

are the ruins of two older
temples, Enryū-ji and Kashō-ji.

Fujiwara no Kiyohira built an
earlier Enryū-ji on this site.

His son Motohira ordered an exact
copy to be built beside it, Kashō-ji.

His son and heir, Hidehira,
accomplished the task.

The centerpiece of Motsuji's temple
garden is Keidie Oizumi Ga Ike

and is unchanged since the garden
was created in the 12th century.

Today it is designated a Special
Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty.

Jogyodo Hall

is where the esoteric
rite Jogyo Zanmai (the

(chanting of sutras
while walking round)

has been practiced since
the founding of Motsu-ji.

The Hatsukayasai festival
that starts from Jogyodo

is the most important
memorial service at Motsu-ji.

The Ennen no Mai
(Longevity Dances)

that are dedicated here
has been handed down

for centuries by the
priests of Motsu-ji.

Yoshitsune was known to spend time

worshiping at this
Buddhist Land (Pure Land) site.
