Debs...

Deborah?

Debs!

You're all right.

- Not again! - Afraid so.

All right?

She's fine.

- Sure you don't need rescuing? - I'll manage. Just go on back to bed.

If you wanted to borrow it, you just had to say.

What's happening to me?

Do I look OK?

You look fine.

Those are the last coursework notes. Next term, your revision classes will be with Dr. Tate.

Until then...

Excuse me. Until then, have a good study leave.

If any of you are doing the Early European Politics module next term, I might see you there.

That was good.

Can we meet later? Jim Taylor's got details of research awards. I thought you'd like a look.

- OK. - Are you all right?

I feel crap.

Even Tate noticed. I can't go on like this.

- Have you tried taking anything for it? - Pills. They make me feel like crap as well.

- What about those herbal things? - It doesn't do anything.

- I took some stuff that made my pee green. - Nice Look. You just need a break.

- It's study leave. - Yes. I'm supposed to study.

- The thesis can wait. - Yeah, the rent can't.

It's just one more year.

Do you know Riaz Chowdry?

No.

Psychology grad student. Really nice guy.

Oh, yes? Since when have you been able to tell? Come on, then!

I met him at the medical ethics lectures.

His thesis is on sleep studies. I bet he knows all about sleepwalking. You should talk to him.

- Is he fit? - I wouldn't know.

- I wasn't looking at him in that way. - Come on. He's a doctor. Is he any good?

Get a grip! It's your mind he'd be interested in, not your body.

Bitch. What are you doing Friday? Shall we go out and get drunk?

I've got the seminar in Edinburgh.

Oh. When you get back.

It's a deal. I'll buy. We need to have a chat anyway.

Remember when we were first years? We sat up and talked every night. Now I hardly see you.

You live two streets away and I never see you.

What's happened to us?

There you are, madam.

Enjoy your meal.

Excuse me.

I ordered the pork.

Not this again!

It's table 16. He wants the pork. I could have sworn... I wrote it down.

Am I keeping you up?

I'm sorry. I had a bad night.

- James. - Hmm?

- Do you find this a bit scary? - Find what scary?

Last night. Walking around. Do you think it's normal?

Do you want me to lock the door?

- Well, maybe you shouldn't worry about it. - It's easy for you to say.

- What am I supposed to do? - Sleep on it.

Goodnight.

- This is really getting to be a problem. - Can't you take some pills for it?

I didn't mean that.

You do pick your moments. I've got a big day tomorrow.

Fine.

Sure. We'll talk about it some other time, like always.

What time is it?

8.15.

- Shit! I'm meant to be in early today. - I thought you'd be pleased to sleep.

I would, but not today.

At least you woke up in the right place. That's something, eh?

Debs, last night... It doesn't mean anything.

I'm just tired, OK?

- Debs all right? - Yeah.

- Are you sure? - What's that supposed to mean?

Oh, no!

I haven't got time for this.

He's such an arsehole!

I saved you some coffee.

Cheers. You're a star.

How...

- How was everything last night? - In what way?

Nothing weird?

No, I was fine. Slept like a log for once.

Why?

No reason, really.

It's just that the back door wasn't shut properly, you know.

It's probably Caroline. You know what she's like.

Yeah, sure.

Right. Best be off.

Hell of a day ahead.

- You always say that. - That's 'cause it's always true.

Tell me if you see any movement.

It's moving to the left.

And down a little bit.

Good.

Now, colour bars.

OK. They're going to start moving.

I want you to tell me if any of the colours get brighter or darker.

It's not neurological. Your brain is OK.

I'm just crazy, then? Yes, basically.

Thanks very much No, you're not crazy.

You are pretty extreme, though.

I mean, your kind of sleepwalking is quite rare.

Lots of people experience something similar, but your somnambulism is more pronounced.

Leaving the house is unusual, for a start.

How is it possible? If I have my eyes closed, how can I see?

You have your eyes open, like when you dream.

- What? - You have your eyes open a lot at night.

You wouldn't notice because... duh... you're asleep.

So how does it happen?

When you're asleep, the subconscious is joyriding your body when you're not around...

is the basic idea. It's a fascinating area of study.

- I bet it is. Why is this happening to me? - What have you done to deserve it?

Well, like I said, it's not all that uncommon to sleepwalk a little.

You're just going beyond some of the normal boundaries.

It's a behaviour pattern that can be initiated or intensified by stress, trauma...

I'm a graduate student.

Oh, that's bad.

I'm a history grad student.

That's really bad, so no career for you, then.

Anything else?

You could say that.

Ah. Relationship kind of thing?

Would that be enough to get this thing started?

It might be. It's the personal things that hit us the hardest -

death of a loved one, aftermath of personal assault,

marital, interpersonal infidelity.

I didn't say he was cheating on me. We're having some problems, that's all.

Sorry.

Well, I'd better go.

Right. OK. You know where to find me.

- Thanks. - OK.

Deborah.

I know it sounds weird, but the subconscious knows things that the conscious doesn't,

or hasn't recognised yet.

Stuff you haven't noticed.

What I mean is, maybe you should try to listen to it.

Corrie!

- I went and saw him. - Who?

Your shrink bloke. Loads of weird shit about the subconscious.

You wouldn't believe what's going on in there.

- I feel like I need to get to know myself. - Hey! Shh. Slow down. What did he say?

Loads. I've got to listen to myself. It's really important that I trust my instincts.

- Psychobabble! - Where are you going?

Home. I've got to talk to James. I want to see the look in his eyes when I say it.

Say what?

It is so obvious. When I think about it, I can't believe it. When I don't think about it,

it's right there!

- Debs! - Shh!

Hello?

Is anyone in?

You look rough.

Do you think James is having an affair?

- What? - Do you think he's screwing someone?

Where's this come from?

I don't know.

What does that mean?

I think he is.

I'm sure of it. I couldn't find anything, but I'm sure.

Look, I know you guys have been... We all go through rough patches and that.

It's true.

- I know it is. - Debs!

You've been a bit weird lately, you know.

Not enough sleep.

This is nothing. Really.

- You wait and see. - That's what I'm doing.

How do you mean?

I called his office.

He left work at two.

He's not here, is he, but he's somewhere...

- So I'm waiting. - That could be anything.

You know, don't you?

- This is nothing to do with me. - You know he's seeing someone.

- Where have you been? - What?

- Debs. - You left work at two.

That's four hours ago.

Where have you been?

- What is this? - She's just tired, that's all.

I want to know who it is. Who have you been with?

I don't believe this.

- You are screwing someone else. - Leave it out!

- What's got into you? - Just tell me the truth.

- You're just tired. You're not making sense. - Actually, I think I am.

- I can't believe I didn't realise it before. - What's made you realise now?

I just know.

- Very good. Play that woman's intuition card! - Riaz says the subconscious...

- Who's Riaz? - He's a student. A psychologist.

You've been talking to a bloke called Riaz and you say I'm the one going behind YOUR back?

He's a friend. He knows about this stuff.

And you believe him over me? You're trusting anything he tells you?

I don't believe everything he tells me and I don't trust anyone any more.

The only thing I know for sure is that you are lying to me.

You are sleeping with somebody else and you're standing there and lying about it.

You're insane!

God, that's it!

I just want to know who it is.

- Just sit down, Debs. - Don't touch me! I'm not a child.

- Look, this is stupid. You're not well. - That's low.

You should see someone who knows about this sort of thing.

Bollocks! Five years and this is what it comes to!

Just answer the question! Who is it?

Debs, you should get some rest.

Are you gonna tell me?

Who is it you're screwing?

I don't have to put up with this.

- You're leaving. - You need some space.

Don't make out you're doing me a favour.

Why don't you act like an adult and face up to it?

Debs!

What's going on?

She knows.

- Ever think this might be your fault? - What?

Do you know who it is?

Nope.

You're never there. I hardly see you, and when I do, you're like a zombie.

You're not the only one having bad nights. Nobody in this house sleeps properly any more.

- It's getting worse. - That's no excuse. Are you going to her?

There's no point in this.

I'll call you.

- We can talk when you've got a grip. - Don't bother calling me and don't come back!

Right.

Corrie!

Corrie!

Debs!

I need to see you.

What is it?

James and me, we've...

We've split up.

Oh, God!

I bought wine.

Yeah. Of course. I'll be right down.

You really scared me. You must have woken half the street.

Mind yourself. I'm having work done.

- Everything's in a mess. - I redefine mess!

I forgot. You're off to Glasgow.

It doesn't matter. I always sleep on trains anyway.

So?

So... I keep thinking I should have known sooner. It's not like the signs weren't there, is it?

We don't talk any more, we don't have fun any more.

We haven't had sex in forever.

So how did you know?

I just... I just knew.

All of a sudden.

I was talking to that bloke - Riaz. Your mad scientist.

The psychologist.

He said the subconscious knows loads of stuff,

so I suppose mine's been going, "Hah! Told you so!"

So this is all just a feeling? A hunch?

No.

He's been doing it.

- I know that now. - Oh, Debs.

Are you OK?

I'm going to bed.

- Don't wake me up tomorrow. - But do you feel a bit better?

- That bastard doesn't deserve to live, does he? - No.

I'm going to sleep.

- I sleep like shit, do you know that? - I know.

Are you staying?

Study leave.

- I'm taking it easy for a bit. - Oh! I wish I could.

What's this?

Posh coffee? You haven't got some poor victim up there, have you?

It's for Debs.

I thought someone should make an effort.

David, I know what you're thinking.

A word of advice.

If it's gonna happen, it'll happen in its own time, but not right away. Rebound and all that.

Right.

Have fun.

Yeah.

- Debs? - Wait. Don't come in!

- I've brought you some coffee. - I'm not dressed.

Are you all right?

Debs?

Debs?

- What is it? What's happened? - Nothing.

I'm fine. It's just...

James.

Right.

- Are you still mad about last night? - I'm not mad.

I didn't mean it like that.

Debs...

What's happened?

Are you hurt?

I just went to bed...

and when I woke up, it was there.

It was there.

I killed him.

Oh, shit!

Debs, what is this shit?

I don't know.

I didn't do anything.

I didn't... It was in my hand...

...but I don't remember.

What did I do?

Will you call...?

- Call? - Will you call the police?

I don't think I can do it.

I'll just stay here.

Right.

Yeah.

Yeah, OK.

Just stay there, OK?

Just stay there.

Here.

- It'll do you good. - Are they coming?

They're on their way.

- What do you think's happened? - I don't know.

I must have killed him.

That's it, isn't it, that thing?

When they get here, they'll put that thing in a bag like they do on TV

because it's a murder weapon, and that makes me...

- No. You don't know that. - What?

You don't know that for sure.

- What else is there? It's a hammer. - Yes, but you don't know he's dead.

You don't know anything.

You were asleep, right?

Yeah...

- I suppose. - So you don't know what happened.

I know what this looks like, but how can you be sure?

I don't understand.

- I just think you need to think about this. - Think about it? When the police get here...

The police aren't coming.

He might not be dead.

You might not have done anything.

You might have found it on the street and picked it up.

- That is bullshit! Look at me! - No. That's logic.

All I'm saying is think about it.

Let's just think about it.

You could do with a shower, you know.

No.

Not in there, OK?

There's clean towels upstairs on my bed.

Where have you been?

Seeing to some things.

- Don't you think we ought to tell someone? - No.

No.

Not until we're sure.

Look, Deborah, everything's gonna be OK. I promise.

It's just his answer service again.

It doesn't mean anything. People do switch off their mobile phones, you know. All the time.

It doesn't mean he's...

There's lots of things last night could have been.

Give me one example, then.

Maybe it was a dog.

Maybe you were out, you were attacked by a dog, you hit it...

- I don't believe that. - It still could have happened.

Maybe you witnessed something.

Saw it happen. Picked up the hammer afterwards.

- You're avoiding the easiest explanation. - Just presenting alternatives.

Nothing's certain.

I mean, what do we really know for sure?

But there's blood and a hammer and hair.

Not any more.

What have you done?

I just don't think you did anything, Debs.

Look at it like this - whatever happened, it wasn't you that did it.

You were asleep, right? So it wasn't your fault.

- Why should you be punished? - It was my thoughts.

- It was my subconscious. - So?

You dream, right?

Everybody does stuff in their dreams they'd never do in real life - kill your own boss,

rape the girl that you fancy...

We never do them, right? It's not real.

- So it wasn't my fault? - That's what I said.

- So we can tell somebody. - No!

No.

Because they wouldn't believe you.

I know you. I know you'd never hurt anyone, but they don't know you.

It looks bad. You have a row with your boyfriend and then this. You know what they'll think.

I just don't think you need to go through that if you don't have to.

James is probably fine.

He was gone long before you went to bed.

He probably caught a bus.

Holed up at a mate's house. He'll be slagging you off to the guys at work now.

- He's an arsehole but he's still alive. - You really think so?

I mean it.

Whatever happened,

it wasn't you that did it.

Just hang on to that thought.

Hello?

Hello?

James?

Hi, it's Andy. James, I don't know if you're around, mate, but could you call if you are?

Hope you're not sick. Just wanted to know why you're not at work. Give us a call.

Hi, this is Corrie. Leave a message.

Corrie, it's me.

I know you're not back, but can you please give me a call when you are?

There's some really weird stuff happening.

I need to talk to you.

I need to tell someone.

I'll come round when you get back.

What's all this in aid of?

It's a bit of a cheer-up for Debs.

- Get her mind off things. - How thoughtful.

- Are you feeling a bit better? - Oh, yeah.

I know it's hard right now, but it'll be a lot brighter in a week or two.

- You think? - Sure!

She's right, you know.

At least you kicked him out. That's got to count for something.

I was impressed, I have to say.

"The bastard doesn't deserve to live"! Nice one!

- What, I said that? - This is Moroccan.

Well, it's Moroccan with additions.

You'll have to tell me what you think works and what needs changing.

Don't worry. I will.

I'm not hungry.

I'll save you some for later.

David...

What's going on?

It's all gone.

Like it was a dream.

But it wasn't.

What did you do with...?

The hammer?

Don't worry about it.

You should get some sleep.

It'll all look brighter in the morning.

I don't think I can sleep in here.

Sleep in my room.

I can kip on the sofa. It's no big deal.

Caroline would probably notice.

I'm fine.

Honestly, I'm fine.

It's all right.

You can go.

Debs.

Sweetheart, come on.

Mattresses lost their appeal or something?

Don't tell me you were waiting for him to come back.

Debs!

This is not good.

No. I know.

Oh, please.

What's this?

You stalking me or something?

You said that the subconscious knows stuff. I'd like to know some more about that.

Like what?

Dreams. Say you dream that you do something awful?

It doesn't necessarily mean what it says on the tin.

I'm a psychologist, not a psychoanalyst, but I can tell you what a Freudian would say.

The subconscious likes to work in symbols and metaphors.

Like what?

OK, let's say you're having a recurring dream

about a train plunging into a tunnel over and over again.

Freud would say that your subconscious is telling you to commute to work more often.

I think I got that wrong, but you know what I mean, yeah?

Yeah, I think so.

So the subconscious knows stuff the conscious doesn't?

Say I know something, but I don't know how I know it,

then how can I be sure it's real?

You see a whole load of things every day.

You hear and smell, touch and taste all sorts of things - too much information to bother with.

Example...

What colour was that man's coat?

- I don't know. I didn't see. - You did see and you do know.

You just don't know you know.

I could get Carl to induce a mild hypnotic state

and you'd tell me what colour and how many buttons.

Or I could just look.

Yeah, if you want to take all the fun out of it.

That information went in,

but it didn't seem important so it doesn't get put in a filing cabinet.

It gets chucked in a cellar in a heap.

At night, your mind sifts through the cellar.

That's dreaming. So how does it know stuff that I don't?

Sometimes important stuff gets overlooked or filed in the wrong place,

and then you'll find that no matter how hard you try to think about something, you can't solve it,

but if you take your conscious mind offline

and let the subconscious root about, it might dig up what you want.

Lots of people say that they have instincts.

Gut feelings that they can't explain but which are usually right.

That's the other part of your mind putting the evidence together.

- Right. - You know when you've got a problem,

- People tell you to sleep on it? - Yeah.

That's why. The answer's probably there, just not to hand.

So, when I'm sleepwalking, if I do something - if I take my friend's dress -

then that's not me doing it, it's that other thing - the subconscious?

No, the subconscious isn't some other thing. It's you.

We've been waiting to order for ten minutes.

I'll be right with you.

Try to get a grip, will you?

We'll both have the crawfish salad to start with, then I'll have the hare with chestnuts

with the garlic mash, and Lorraine will have the couscous.

Are you listening to me?

James!

Where have you been?

Losing my job. You know how it is

Debs?

I checked hospitals today.

Nothing.

You see? I told you.

- It doesn't mean anything. - Yes, it does.

- It means everything's gonna be OK. - What a day!

- Are you all right? - Yeah.

Don't you knock?

I didn't think you'd mind.

What is it?

- I thought you might like some company. - I'm really tired.

- I just want to be on my own right now. - It's nice...

...what you've done with it.

Yeah, it's much better than before.

- David... - He always did have really bad taste anyway.

What?

You think he's dead.

- Did I say that? - No, but you think it, don't you?

You think I killed him.

All those other explanations.

Jesus! You didn't even believe them yourself!

Why, David? Why try and help me if you think I did it?

I only said he could have had better taste. That doesn't mean anything.

Just tell me what you think.

- What is this? - Just tell me!

OK. Maybe you killed him!

But hang on a minute.

Maybe it was the best thing. Maybe the guy deserved it, cheating on you like that.

He was an arsehole anyway.

All I'm saying is that you did what you had to do, and now...

Now who can prove anything?

Exactly.

It's got nothing to do with you.

Nothing at all.

Face facts, Debs. You got away with it.

Come on. Hey...

I'm not going to say anything, am I?

I'm involved in this, too. I got rid of the stuff.

I thought you were being...

- I thought you were my friend. - I am.

But everything you said was a lie.

Face it. You killed him.

That's not what matters.

What matters is that you got away with it.

You can relax.

You're safe.

I'll look after you.

Oh, my God!

You wanted him gone.

That's what this is. You wanted him gone and you did it...

And then you put the hammer there and you tried to make me think it was me.

- Come on, Debs. That's mad. - I'm not mad!

I didn't do it. I was asleep!

- Yeah, sure - I was!

Debs, it's just us now, right?

I told you I am with you all the way on this. You don't have to pretend any more.

- You are a monster! - Well, you're a murderer!

I just came to pick up the rest of my stuff.

It's OK, isn't it?

Oh, my God!

You're all right!

Why shouldn't I be?

He's all right.

I didn't do anything.

- It was a dog I picked up in the street. - Deborah...

- What are you talking about? - Nothing.

Nothing. She's not talking about anything.

Where have you been?

- Staying with some friends. - You could have called. I was worried.

- Your office asked where you were. - I took some time off.

- I wanted to think stuff through. - Think stuff through?

What do you think we've been doing? We've all been thinking stuff through.

- Maybe you'd better come back tomorrow. - What's it to you?

- I'll have your stuff ready for you then. - I still pay rent here, you know.

You two? Are you?

No. Oh, God, no!

I didn't do it.

He's alive!

I didn't do anything.

It's pretty funny, don't you think? You thought you were lying all the time and you weren't.

He wasn't hurt. He was at his mate's.

I didn't do anything.

- You did something. - No.

I'm free.

It's all right.

You can go.

- Last night sounded stressful. - It was all right.

- Hi, this is Corrie. Leave a message. - Corrie, you back yet?

It's me. I'm coming over, so if you get this, wait for me.

You sound different.

Yeah? What, good different?

Yeah. Good different.

I slept well.

If James comes by, tell him...

What?

Tell him I don't want to see him any more.

Corrie!

Corrie, it's me!

You can tell me all about your adventures up north.

Debs.

What are you doing here?

- Didn't Caroline tell you to leave me alone? - What?

Caroline.

- I haven't seen her. - So how did you know I was here?

Sometimes the subconscious knows things the conscious doesn't.

This isn't the right time for this. I'll pick my stuff up later. We can talk then... if we have to.

- Did Caroline tell you where to find me? - I haven't seen her. I haven't been back yet.

Why do you have to do this?

It's gonna take more than cheap roses to win me back, you know.

They're not for you.

What?

How did you find out, anyway?

You are screwing someone else.

What is this?

I want to know who it is.

They're not for you.

Who is it you're screwing, James?

The subconscious is joyriding your body while you're not around.

- Corrie! - Debs... Shit!

- I need to see you. - Oh, God.
