In this lesson, we're going to take a look
at some of the tools and the color page

to adjust your color palette
that's limiting.

So enhancing other ones and just straight
up not allowing some of the colors

into our image
to make a unique visual style.

All right.

Here in our project, I'm
going to keep working on let's do Shot 52

and let's still go over to our group
post clip.

We have our split tone and our contrast
and our color space transform.

I'll move this over a little bit closer
and shift s

to make a new node before our split.

Let's call this palette.

K By the way, if you ever see

Palette misspelled
and this is draining, I'm sorry.

I try my hardest.

I try my hardest to do things right,
but it's a hard word for me.

Let's practice on a frame
that isn't so weird.

There we go.

Now to adjust
what kind of colors are available.

We're going to get into some brand
new tools here.

The first tool would be our hue curves,
which is right behind our custom curves.

These little icons
here, we'll switch to our different

curves.

The first one is hue versus hue.

And again,
you can kind of think of this as a graph

and we have a histogram here
to kind of give us a clue

of where our colors live in our image.

This is just a graph of how much of each
hue is coming into this node.

So left and right selects the hue
and then up and down

adjusts it for hue versus hue.

If we do something like grab the reds

and we'll put a couple of control points
here so that we don't affect everything.

If we push the Reds up,

it's going to rotate the hue

so we can make them pink or purple

or green or whatever we want.

So we're selecting a hue
and we're changing its hue

by moving a point up or down.

We also have hue versus saturation,
which is kind of the same idea.

We can select a certain hue

and move it up in saturation
or down in saturation so

we can boost the saturation
of our warmer tones here,

or we can de saturate anything
that's kind of reddish.

And all of these curves work the same way

here versus
luminance is the luminance of whatever

we're focusing on.

We also have curves
that are based on luminance

and so we can adjust just the saturation
of the brighter or darker parts of things.

So if I

want to saturate anything that's dark,

I can kind of push this little line down.

Anything that's light.

Maybe we want to de saturate too,

and now anything that's brighter
or darker than these little dots

gets completely desaturated.

Same thing here for saturation
versus saturation.

Most things in the shot
are pretty low in saturation,

but we can select it by that
as well as saturation versus luminance.

You can pick the most saturated things

and decrease their luminance
as they get more

saturated, which can give you
some really weird effects.

But that's pretty much
how these hue curves work.

And for establishing a color palette,
what we're really trying to do

is pick colors that we want to enhance

and take colors out
that we don't really like.

A great place to start
when you're stylizing things

or when you're doing color
grading at all is to start with the skin.

So I can click to select her skin

and it'll
put one dot right where I clicked,

and then I'll put a dot to the right
and to the left of things.

This actually kind of wraps around.

So if I push this to the right,
it'll come around this edge

and we can take these dots
and kind of move them out

so that we have
a little bit wider selection.

And now we can take this hue
and move this up and down if I want to.

Or what's even more useful is
I can keep it right

where it's at
and I can adjust other things.

So maybe everything
that's kind of more yellow than the skin

we can change the hue of.

So maybe we could make everything
kind of turn green

and we're sort of protecting the skin here
and keeping that the same color.

So this is really easy to kind of
break your image

if you want to, but it's nice to have a
right where the skin is.

And then again,
we're just going to kind of

look for things
that we want to change around.

Maybe we don't like this
kind of bluish color.

Maybe we want everything
to be a little more teal.

I can click on this curtain right here

and maybe we'll widen out our selection

and I can bring this up
or down to change the hue.

So maybe we'll push it up just a touch.

So now we have a little bit
more of a kind of a cyan than that

deeper blue

and generally
subtle is better for stuff like this.

Maybe we don't really
like the green of this couch.

We kind of want to saturate that
while we can go to you first saturation

and we can make continued adjustments
here.

It actually saves all the adjustments
for all of our pages here.

We're not like overwriting it or anything,
so we could do Hoover saturation.

I can pick our couch,
which actually is kind

of more of this red color,
which is interesting.

You can take that and maybe bring
the saturation down just a little bit.

Now, if we go way too far,

we're really kind of getting into her hair
and getting into the couch

and everything, but we can take that down
maybe towards the greens a little more.

So everything
that's like sort of more green as it gets

more green, we'll take it down a little.

So now we're making
just these little adjustments

that take some of the green out,
makes the blues a little bit more teal.

Maybe we're going to

pop this kind of purple.

It can boost

the saturation a little bit of our purples

and really kind of
just this into what we like.

And again, because this is going to go on
everything, It's

good to check this on
a lot of different clips, right?

Make sure that nothing crazy's happening.

I might find some other colors
that we like or we don't like.

Now, this is kind of popping
those reds a little bit,

which maybe we like

to see how it works for this angle.

See this cleans this up a lot.

Look at that.

Kind of
has this kind of greenish yellow tone.

And when we turn this on,

it desaturated the walls a little bit.

Take some of the green undertones
out, pops the red in the backpack,

pops the purple in our blanket,

makes this background

just a little more teal.

And it definitely cleans things up
quite a bit.

Again, all those little tiny changes
that we made are really giving us

a little bit more clean of an image
and a lot more stylized as well.
