Emerging fifth-generation wireless\h
communications better-known as 5G will be far\h\h

more than quick-connect phone calls and fast movie\h
downloads, particularly for military. 5G, in fact,\h\h

could make reality of what military leaders as far\h
back as the 1980s referred to as the “infosphere,”\h\h

where access to data from video, voice,\h
sensors, targeting, reconnaissance,\h\h

and even the sights on infantry weapons are\h
easy and instantaneous for anyone who needs it.

That's why, today we will discuss how, exactly,\h
the role of 5G technologies in military use?\h

Before talking further about it,\h
firstly we need to know what 5G is?\h

According to the U.S. Congressional Research\h
Service report titled National Security\h\h

Implications of Fifth Generation Mobile\h
Technologies, 5G is to increase the speed,\h\h

reduce the latency, and improve reliability\h
of data transfer compared to existing 4G\h\h

technologies, and support interconnected\h
or autonomous devices like smart homes,\h\h

self-driving vehicles, precision agriculture\h
and industrial machinery, and advanced robotics.\h\h

For the military, 5G could improve intelligence,\h
surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems and\h\h

signal processing, enable new command-and-control\h
applications, and streamline logistics.\h\h

5G also could give the military broad\h
access to augmented and virtual reality,\h\h

5G smart warehousing, distributed command\h
and control, and dynamic spectrum use.

Now let's discuss our main question.
The emergence of 5G technology,\h\h

now commercially available, offers the Department\h
of Defense the opportunity to take advantage,\h\h

at minimal cost, of the benefits of this\h
system for its own operational requirements.\h

In other words, the 5G commercial network, built\h
and activated by private companies, will be used\h\h

by the armed forces at a much lower expenditure\h
than that necessary if the network were to be set\h\h

up with an exclusively military goal. Military\h
experts foresee that the 5G system will play\h\h

an essential role for the use of hypersonic\h
weapons missiles, including those bearing\h\h

nuclear warheads, which travel at a speed superior\h
to Mach 5. In order to guide them on variable\h\h

trajectories, changing direction in a fraction\h
of a second to avoid interceptor missiles,\h\h

it is necessary to gather, elaborate and transmit\h
enormous quantities of data in a very short time.\h\h

The same thing is necessary to activate defenses\h
in case of an attack with this type of weapon,\h\h

since there is not enough time\h
to take such decisions, the only\h\h

possibility is to rely on 5G automatic systems.\h

This new technology will also play\h
a key role in the battle network.\h\h

With the capability of simultaneously linking\h
millions of transceivers within a defined area,\h\h

it will enable military personnel departments\h
and individuals to transmit to one another,\h\h

almost in real time, maps, photos and other\h
information about the operation under way.

Here are some points of 5G's role in military,\h\h

Let’s check it out!
- 5G FOR HYPERSONIC WEAPONS\h

With a super-fast network able to exchange\h
data in real-time over vast areas,\h\h

5G could have a role to play in something that’s\h
long been talked about in the military, namely\h\h

hypersonic weapons. They will also fly at very\h
high altitudes and on unpredictable flight paths,\h\h

easily skirting existing missile defense systems.\h
Intercepting them is therefore very difficult,\h\h

but so is guiding them. Where 5G comes in, is in\h
hypersonic defense systems. An aircraft carrier,\h\h

a military base, or even a city, is\h
going to have less than a minute to\h\h

react to an incoming hypersonic missile.
In short, incredible amounts of artificial\h\h

intelligence-powered real-time data\h
processing on targets and trajectories\h\h

are going to be required to stand any chance\h
of defending against hypersonic weapons.

- 5G FOR THE ‘SMART’ MILITARY BASE\h

The high frequency, short wavelength\h
‘millimeter-wave’ spectrum that allows\h\h

the 1Gbps+ speeds over 5G has obvious\h
military potential. It’s short-range only,\h\h

so perfect for enabling smart military\h
bases and command posts. Think millimeter\h\h

wave-powered cameras and motion sensor-enabled\h
tech around the perimeter of military bases,\h\h

enabling command posts and vehicles to\h
communicate with each other in real-time.

- 5G FOR THE ‘BATTLE NETWORK’
Speed is everything on the battlefield, and\h\h

5G’s lower latency and higher capacity will enable\h
armies to share more data, such as real-time maps\h\h

and photos of battlefield scenarios, as well as\h
computer simulations. Based on a recent report\h\h

from the US Defense Innovation Board, "5G’s\h
true potential will be in its impact on the\h\h

battle network of the future". That network will\h
increasingly include a large number of cheaper,\h\h

more connected, and more resilient systems to\h
function in a rapidly evolving battlefield.

- 5G FOR ‘BATTLEFIELD WEARABLES’
An overlooked part of 5G’s capabilities is mMTC\h\h

(massive Machine Type Communications), which\h
will enable up to a million connected devices per\h\h

square kilometer. All of which can be fitted with\h
sensors that collect and share data across a 5G\h\h

network. Strap a smartwatch and bunch of biometric\h
wearables to a soldier and their vital statistics,\h\h

such as geographical position, heart-rate,\h
blood pressure, and fatigue can be share.\h

Eventually we could be talking some kind of\h
connected Google Glass-type augmented reality\h\h

devices similar to what pilots already use, but\h
with real-time data streaming in. Either way,\h\h

information about what’s going on in the\h
battlefield is going to change utterly with 5G.

And the last one,
- 5G FOR DRONES AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE\h

Unmanned aerial vehicles, AKA drones are\h
already used by the military. However,\h\h

they don’t transmit and share real-time 4K video\h
and other data across command-and-control centers,\h\h

and units in the battlefield. With 5G comes\h
4K video, object recognition, faster data\h\h

processing and artificial intelligence\h
which will help reconnaissance missions\h\h

and giving army units information on what they’re\h
about to come up against. 5G could also help in\h\h

more accurately and intelligently targeting\h
weapons. This all means that the military can\h\h

get the most out of artificial intelligence,\h
virtual reality and advanced reality.\h\h

They can also react to emergency situations\h
and control drones and vessels individually or\h\h

in swarms in real-time via the mobile network.
So, we conclude that military 5G future mobile\h\h

networking capability will have a profound\h
influence on military wireless communications,\h\h

and will make significant\h
progress in military technology.
