I was in politics for 20 years.

In 2015, I received a shock when I
lost my parliamentary seat.

In the week I was swapping my suit
and briefcase for sequins and

dancing shoes, Donald Trump, an
entertainment heavyweight,

became the leader of the free world.

To understand how this happened, I'm
travelling to Trumpland,

America's Deep South...

Could you shout really loudly if you
voted for Donald Trump?

THEY SCREAM

..to meet his supporters and walk a
mile in their shoes,

to learn how the President
won them over.

If you are going to come all this
way to hang out with the Southern

boys, you've got to learn the ways
of a southern boy.

It's always dangerous to start from

the assumption that voters are
wrong.

You've got to get on the inside.

Can you see the world through their
eyes, rather than yours?

How does Trump tap into the US
psyche...

..and what does his popularity tell
us about today's American values?

My search for answers will take me
to some extraordinary places.

Let me tell you, President Trump has
done more for America in one year

than Barack Obama did in eight.

What was it that Trump supporters
thought he could fix about America?

We were heading into the pits of
socialism.

And after the chaos and
controversies of Trump's

administration so far, do they still
believe this reality TV billionaire

is the man to do it?

We will make America wealthy again.

We will make America proud again.

We will make America safe again.

And, yes, together we will make
America great again.

It's the first year anniversary of
Donald Trump becoming the leader of

the free world, and I'm somewhere I
never thought I'd be,

inside Mar-a-Lago,
his $300 million Florida home.

That is his personal apartment,

that's where he's spent an enormous

amount of time in his presidency
so far.

We are, you know, if I threw a
stone, I could break a window.

Not that I would, but I could.

Of course, I don't have access to
his apartment,

but I have managed to get into his
private members' club.

So, am I too loud?

Am I too loud?

I'm the guest of Toni Holt Kramer,
she's a friend of Donald's and

founder of his female supporter's
group, The Trumpettes.

and Trumpsters from all

over this United States,

and many from out of this country

Toni's supporters group has
thousands of members across America,

and tomorrow night, I'll be amongst
800 of them at a party to celebrate

the President's first-year
achievements.

We are right in the beating heart of
Donald Trumpland.

Everybody, for the last year has
been watching Donald Trump going

into and out of Mar-a-Lago.
You know, it's the place where he

goes for his fancy dinners or to
play golf.

The weekend, it's where he wakes up
at six in the morning and does his

tweets. Do you find the President's
tweets helpful?

I just really think that the world
needs to hear that because I find

the mainstream media is so biased.

People are not really getting the
real news.

CNN breaks wind, not news.

That's what they do, it's constant.

It's all, everything is anti-Trump.

So what would you trust,
in terms of TV?

I trust Fox, but what I do is,

I research everything and I actually
watch all of it,

balance it out but I would believe
that Trump is telling the truth more

than anybody. Tweet us.

We are going to tweet you. I feel
insufficiently glamorous in this
picture.

Just turn to the side, that's

Whilst I'm in town, Toni's putting

multi-million dollar homes.

Here in Palm Beach, she lives
alongside 33 billionaires,

including the President.

As an economist, I want to know how
Trump the businessman,

who has apparently filed for
bankruptcy six times,

seems to have convinced voters,
both rich and poor,

that he's the man to make all
Americans wealthy again.

And a year in, do they still
believe it?

What a beautiful room.

I must have been born with the same
gene that the President has.

Right. Because I am a gold fanatic.

I have never had a decorator in my
life.

If you like the house
then bravo for me.

But if you don't like it, just blame
it on my bad taste.

Toni is a former Hollywood celebrity
reporter and has been a friend of

Trump's for the past ten years.

There he is. That one is at
Mar-a-Lago.

This guy, who nobody thought could
win, wins.

Right. What is the reason?

Because he's not a politician,

that's probably the best thing he's
got going for him.

He just is a businessman.

He knows how to make money, he knows
how to turn a business around,

he knows how to help people get a
job.

His big achievement is to persuade
ordinary Americans he's going to

make their lives better? People that
work for us were saying that their

husband, their child,

their working child was laid off or
something and I just thought,

this is bad news, this is just not
good.

Then on a Saturday night, if he was
down here sometimes,

I would just send over a little note

and I always called him
Mr President.

Don't ask me why.

Even back then? Oh! Before there was
any conversation about it.

In my head, in my head he had to be
President.

He just had to be President.

Toni's taking me to lunch to meet
the party's organising committee.

I want to know whether they simply
support Trump because he's rich like

them, or is there more to it?

Like Toni, they're members of his

fee has doubled to $200,000 since
Trump became President.

Wouldn't you say that if not for
Mar-a-Lago, there are a lot of

people that would not be welcomed at
a lot of the other clubs?

But he changed the tone, now there's

Palm Beach is a different place
because of Donald Trump,

it really is. It's hard to
believe what this place was like.

Nobody would talk

They thought I was Jewish. I don't

any of these clubs. He didn't care
and I accepted everyone,

he didn't care what you did, what
you look like, whatever,

you just paid the money and you are
welcome and he has welcomed

everybody in his club for ever and
ever and ever.

He is the nicest man to everybody
equally.

That you can never take away from
him.

They clearly love Trump for what
he's done for them,

but there's one thing about Donald I
have to ask them about.

Lots of people have read what he's
said about women,

remember the famous interview,
grabbed by the... Yes, yes. We know.

All of that. I'm going to stop you.

No, but my question, how do you
respond to that,

what's the truth there?
It's really easy.

I mean anybody...

First of all, men will be men, boys
will be boys, but the reality is,

we all know him as a really great
gentleman.

Right, right. The thing is, he's a
great family man.

You can tell who they are with their
families, he doesn't drink,

he doesn't smoke.

Oh, really?

He didn't even want to shake hands
when we first met him,

more than 30 years ago.

He wanted to be one of the big boys.

So you think it was just macho talk?

Yes, of course.

My 13-year-old daughter said to me
on the day he was elected,

how could America have defended a
man who said things about women like

that? I thought they would at least
try to say it was wrong.

I felt annoyed at myself in that I
should have said...

..that's just ridiculous to defend
that.

They were willing to defend the
indefensible to be part of the

Donald Trump club.

I don't think Donald Trump is the
kind of guy who cares whether you've

got multi-generations of kind of
blue blood Americans going all the

way back to the settlers.

I think with Donald Trump,

money talks and if you can pay your
entry ticket,

then you can join his club.

The Trumpettes can clearly afford to
be members.

There's rather a lot of people in
Palm Beach who could get nowhere

near it, let alone the rest of
America.

These guys are all a lot wealthier
than most Americans -

do you have to be wealthy to be a
Trump supporter?

Do you think he's delivered for them
in the last year? Absolutely.

he's added $7.8 trillion to the

nation's economy.

More jobs, more industry,
more everything

coming back into this country.

I mean, he is making America great
again and, guys,

this is what we fought for,

this is what each and every one of
us fought so hard for.

alone and isolated and set upon by

"your friends, and it's not easy to
say I'm a Trump supporter."

admit to in the workplace,

Talking to Toni she's really afraid
of anybody who's demonstrating and

on the streets. They are anti-Trump
which means, in their view,

anti-truth, anti-American, they want
to burn the flag.

And goodness knows what they'll do.

That's what they're afraid of.

the simpleton is in the Oval.

What is the significance of your
leaf?

This is poisonous politics.
This is really divisive.

These anti-Trump protesters are
obviously not the wealthy Palm Beach

residents I've been hanging out
with.

The majority of working class
Americans voted for Hillary Clinton

but still around 40%, mostly white,
did vote for Trump.

These are the voters I'm most
curious about.

The thing that I'm trying to
understand, though, is lots and lots

of minimum wage voters... Yes...

They voted for...

What do you think it is?

I think the immigration.

You think immigration. Yes.

They... He kept telling them that
they're taking their jobs.

They are not taking their jobs.

They are doing jobs that they don't
want to do.

And racism. Because there is a
strong element,

especially in the Deep South.

Yes.

I asked lots of people were they
surprised that working people on

ordinary incomes voted for Trump,
and some people on the march just

didn't want to believe it
could be true.

The only thing they could say was
that they were deluded,

that they just did not know what
was going on,

that the propaganda was too
overwhelming, that they have been

brainwashed, believing lies.

I'm leaving Palm Beach to try and
find out why some of the working

class did back Trump.

I'm on my way to Gordon County in
Georgia, a massive Trump stronghold,

over 80% of people voted for the
President.

It used to be a really big
manufacturing centre,

the carpet capital of America,
of the world.

But loads of those jobs have gone
now,

a fifth of the people live in
poverty.

Donald Trump claims his policies are
changing that.

I'm going to visit a local factory
to see for myself.

TRUMP: Since the election we have
created 2.4 million new jobs.

Including 200,000 new jobs in
manufacturing alone.

We slashed the business tax rate
from 35% all the way down to 21%.

So American companies can compete
and win against anyone else anywhere
in the world.

So, what brings you to
North Georgia?

I think in this county, 80% of
people voted for Donald Trump.

They did. How about you, did you
vote for him?

Yes, I voted for Trump.

I like what he said. He's never been
a politician.

What's his qualification for doing
the job?

A businessman.

I get tired of the politicians that
are there forever.

They lose sight of what's important.

Yes.

Being a businessman, he understands
what it takes to keep one of these

things afloat. Keep them going.

Regulations, everything.

He's going to loosen some of those
things up so we can actually do what

we do best.
Build things, make stuff.

Yeah. These new tax laws are going
to help us.

Yeah. Maybe not right away, but they
are going to help us long-term.

Yeah. Do you think it is possible to
bring more manufacturing jobs back
to here?

In time, I think it'd be
possible, yeah.

Definitely.

Being 1,000 miles from the Mexican
border,

I'm surprised how many workers here
are Hispanic.

I would say without the Hispanics,

we wouldn't have enough people to
fill all these jobs.

So when the President says there's

too many people coming up from
Mexico,

taking people's jobs, you kind of
actually need a few more?

Definitely.

What is your immigration status?

Are you citizen, or...?

No, I'm resident. Resident?

Resident, but non-citizen, so you
can't vote?

Not yet. If you had voted last year
in the Presidential election...

..who would you have voted for?
Not Trump.

Not Trump? Not Trump.
Definitely. Why not Trump?

I don't like his ideas.

It's clear that Hispanic workers are
an integral part of this business.

But I can't help wondering how the
rest of the local workforce feels

about this. How you doing?

There was a lot of people who voted
for him for the wrong reasons.

What would they be?
The wall is a big thing.

I personally think it's stupid.

Because a wall is not going to keep
somebody out.

They think their lives are going to

voted for him.

I know people want to say, oh, he
went bankrupt this time,

he went bankrupt that time, but I
think it was a strategic move.

You know, to keep from hurting
himself even further.

And every single time, he has built

he's a billionaire, too.

And they think he's on their side.

And they are probably right,
because, you know,

he's successful and they are.

He's on everybody's side.
Yeah, he is.

Even though he's cut taxes -
actually, for the richest people,
mainly.

For people, the top 10%.

Do you think that that's going to
make the economy better for you as
well?

It has also helped us, as a
matter of fact,

since that bill was signed.

I've actually started earning $100
more per pay cheque at my job.

I got a bonus this year.

I've never got paid a bonus before
in my life.

I also got a raise.

Not to mention the unspoken extra
$100...

..every two weeks that I've been
getting. I've got three things right
up the ladder.

But if I say to you, bonus, raise -

thank you, Donald Trump,
is that right?

it's just been promise after promise

we promise change.
I voted for Obama first time.

But the second time I didn't.

We are trillions of dollars in debt.

Let's see what he can do.

I mean, look at the Trump empire,

He is playing on the scare factor.

One of the poorest minority groups
in America, the black community,

overwhelmingly voted for any
candidate other than Donald Trump.

Only 8% supported the President,

which makes it all the more
surprising that one of Trump's most

vocal supporters in the election
campaign was a black evangelical

preacher, Pastor Mark Burns.

I know without a shadow of a doubt
that Donald J Trump

will make sure that
all Americans will have jobs.

I've travelled to South Carolina to
find out why Pastor Burns so

passionately believes Trump is the
man to make all Americans wealthy
again.

No matter what the colour of their
skin.

We want to take from those that are
working hard

and solely focus on giving to those
who refuse to work.

I've been on this system, a welfare
system.

I know the system. I'd used to live
in free homes.

Have food stamps. And I also know,

..that once you get on it, how easy
it is to stay on it.

But it's also the case that,
you know,

being a black American is much
tougher, economically.

Less likely to have a good job.

We cannot use the fact that I'm
black as the reason why I'm not

successful. Barack Obama clearly
destroyed that myth.

You met Donald Trump while
President Obama was President.

I was invited to a meeting as he was
preparing to run.

It was only about four or five of us
black leaders in there and I said,

"Mr Trump, many of us black leaders

"have taken some major hits and
backlash

"from our community just for taking
this meeting because Trump's name

"unfortunately has become synonymous
with racists."

You know, on social media by people,
"Oh, my God,

"I can't believe you are
supporting... You are a racist and
you are a sell-out."

I saw that he desired to help the
Christian faith and to declare his

faith strongly, regardless of what
he has done in the past.

It's interesting you say regardless
of what he's done in the past.

Is being willing to forgive him for
things important?

I mean, isn't it for all of us?

I mean, when we ask Jesus to come
into our heart,

we expect forgiveness.

It applies to all of us.

Even Donald Trump.

Pastor Burns' support

for the President is really about

his own profile and the profits of

In America, money and religion can

Yeah. Can I ask you about the tax
cutting Bill?

There was a Bill which particularly
cut corporation tax.

People only talk about, or they
think about, the major corporations.

And those are benefiting from it.

And the owners and the CEOs are
benefiting from it.

Yes, that is true. But really it is
impacting people like me.

You know, you look at our small
business, it greatly benefits us.

Now, we can invest more into our
community.

We can invest more into creating
jobs.

People with incomes below $50,000
a year generally voted for...

..Democrat. People with incomes
above $50,000 a year generally voted

Republican for Trump. People look at
this and think there is a party on

the side of poor people and a party
on the side of the wealthy.

You're kind of backing the wealthy
party.

That's what people think. Who, me?
Yeah.

That's what people will think.
I mean, that's their ignorance.

I mean, you just work hard for what
you get.

It's just that simple. And we turn
to race as a reason why we are

not wealthy as black people.

That's not the case.
So you can stay stupid.

You have the right to be stupid in

After spending the day with
Mark Burns,

I can see he's ambitious and shares
Trump's drive for success.

That, I can understand.

But I wonder whether he agrees with
Trump on everything.

Trump calling the entire African

continent, all 54 countries, shit
hole countries? Pardon my language.

If, because again we still don't
have proof. No, it's not been
denied.

No-one is denying it. Were you in
the room? Because the people in the
room said that he said it.

There is clearly an understanding

things which are very helpful to

time when others are accusing him of

When I see this new day and the sun
rising here,

I think this is a new day for
unification of our races.

I think that is what Donald Trump is
doing.

Most black people don't think that's
what he is doing.

They think he's being...

Pushing black people down. Yeah,
but how is that possible when

right now the unemployment rate
within the

African-American community is at an
all-time low?

They believe
the discrimination is getting worse.

It's about the have-not.

As long as we are focusing on the
narrative it's about race,

when it's really about economic
equality.

That's the whole purpose that
Trump's agenda...

spokesperson against that.

From his point of view. I mean,

you go out there and say, it's not

because I know him personally.

Democrats really angrily.

I went to see an anti-Trump rally in
Palm Beach the other day.

During the election campaign you had
people at Trump rallies yelling,

"Lock her up, Hillary Clinton."

And then at this rally you had
Democrats yelling, "Lock him up."

The President. And I thought to
myself, what's happened to democracy

in America where both parties want
to lock up

the other's leader? Can I do another
two minutes?

Yeah. Because the reality is that we
always achieve more when we are

together than when we divide and
when we're angry with each other.

I think that's the only way to make
America truly great again.

there for 20 years.

My number one focus is on serving

Georgia, I can now see why,

they are all in some way better off
for now because of Trump.
