In this lecture we're gonna be learning how to draw lips.

So let's go ahead and begin.

So for the lips let's go ahead and we're just gonna draw a straight line like this is how I usually

like to draw lips when I'm drawing them from the front start with a straight line to just kind of block

out how wide my lips are going to be.

Then from there we can go ahead and we can sketch out an oval like this at the bottom

then we'll do a circle right here and a circle right here so these two circles should meet kind of right

there in the middle of that big oval

then let's go ahead and kind of mark out where the corners of our lips will be so right about there

and a right about there and a little bit closer on that side that looks pretty good.

And what we're gonna use these as is guide.

So the bottom lip is gonna be on the bottom side of this line and the top lip will be on the top of

that line.

So what I'd like to do is I'd like to go ahead and start with the bottom and coming off the bottom of

this oval here.

I like to bring it right up like this.

So just kind of a curved line like that do the same thing on the other side and you'll see that I turn

my paper just so I can get that nice curvature there sometimes in your drawing curves.

The easiest way to do it is to turn your paper so your hand naturally moves in that curve.

All right next.

Let's go ahead and let's draw this little point up here.

So you'll notice on your own lips that you have this kind of point in your lips that runs right up into

the what's called the filter from.

Then we can go ahead and draw the top portion.

So it's going to kind of curve up like this and then slightly back down.

So almost an unnoticeable S curve but there is a little bit of an S curve there.

Do the same thing over here.

Curve down into the corner of the mouth

and then for the lips we don't just want to do a straight line what we get is we kind of get coming

off of these two circles we kind of get this sort of rounded almost point like that

and that kind of makes up this form right here of these two circles.

And then it basically.

So it kind of goes up like that and then it's going to kind of come down like this.

So kind of a slightly curved line into the corner of the mouth which for the corner of the mouth we're

kind of just get a little crease going down like that.

All right.

So we can go ahead and kind of darken all these lines in and solidify them now

and then what we get is typically the top lip at the light is coming from the top down the top lip will

be in more shadow.

So I like to just simplify it by darkening the entire top lip with the shadow and then I'm gonna get

a little bit of shadow on the bottom of the bottom lip.

So right down in here

and then I like to add a little bit of shadow and it's not necessarily shadows just kind of a value

just so we kind of differentiate the lips from the skin tone and then you're gonna get a dark shadow

here from the crease and this is ambient occlusion so right there in that crease where you can't really

see anymore it's going to get really dark

it's also going to be a little bit more and shadow on that side and that corner right there and if you

wanted to you can even kind of draw in some construction lines which also kind of makeup just kind of

the wrinkles that you see on the lips.

But this will kind of help you understand the form a little bit more how that curves out.

And same with down here.

This curves out as well especially around this big round oval shape that we drew there.

It has a nice curve to it.

All right.

So there is the front view of the lips sort of we want to draw the lips from the side.

Well from the side it's going to be very simple it's just kind of start with a line like that.

It can have a little bit of a curve to it and then you have the upper lip like that

and then you have the bottom line.

Now the upper lip tends to peek out just a slight bit more but basically you get this angled V shape

right there

the bottom lip also tends to be a little bit bigger than the upper lip a little bit thicker

than this will run kind of like a little curve like that down into the chin.

And this will be the fill term which will run up into the nose.

And again we can go ahead and shade in that upper lip

and also go ahead and shade in this area.

If we wanted to we can even kind of mark out a little bit of a reflection there on the lips.

Maybe they're wearing some sort of glossy lip gloss

right.

Great.

Now what about drawing it in three quarters view.

Well just like the eyeball you want to remember what the form is and how the how the whatever it is

you're drawing is wrapping around that.

So the eyelid for example had a wrap around a sphere.

When it comes to the lips the front of your face is kind of curved like a cylinder.

And so we want to make sure that we draw the lips on a curve.

So a good way to practice this is to just draw cylinder

draw two lines coming straight down

that we can draw some lips on that something to draw where the center of the lips are gonna be which

would be right there in the fill trim.

And I'll use that as my guide.

So start by drawing my two circles which are kind of more like spheres and you're looking at it from

this angle.

So though kind of slightly overlap and then I'll draw my big oval for the bottom lip

and then we can go head kind of sketch out the curve.

So we want to follow the same curve here and that's kind of the curve of the crease of the mouth.

All right.

And so then what we can do is we can just draw the angled part of the fill trim like that

troubled upper lip and because of the angle we're looking at this as you can tell this will get a little

bit more squished on this side and this side will appear to be a little bit more stretched

can go ahead and draw the bottom lip so when I draw this bottom up I kind of use these curving lines

like this and make their way back just so I can keep in mind what the curvature of that bottom lip is.

It's just kind of like that.

So just like that.

So there you go.

There's some lips from a three quarters of you

great.

Now what about the smile.

Now when I got it I'm not going to go into crazy detail the smile but just you have a decent understanding

for your character designs.

A smile is kind of like this.

So rather than just mean a curved line like that you see people draw smiles like that when they're just

doodling around.

But in this case what we want to do is we want to kind of do a straight line again.

The smile just kind of stretches out on the top lip and then it curves down for the bottom lip

like that.

So that's kind of what we get going on there.

Maybe I'll shrink that down a little bit so drawing a smaller drawing.

So this is going to represent the bottom of the top lip and this will represent the the inside of the

bottom lip.

And so from there we can basically do the same thing.

So we start with two circles for the fill trim sort of area.

The lips a big oval down here and then we can just kind of base everything off of that.

So I'll go ahead and I'll draw a line like this to represent the bottom inside of the lip.

Then from the bottom of the bottom left from that Oval to go ahead and just bring the lips back up like

this.

So this is where that actual curved shape comes into play.

It's not on the upper lip.

It's on the bottom lip where you see that nice curve

and you might get a slight curve.

So these might kind of angled downwards just a little bit but it's not going to be back or not as much

as it is down here and just like everything when the smile is happening the muscles in the face are

stretching.

So that means everything kind of just gets stretched out a little bit.

So this point right here for example will be a little bit more stretched out the the corners of the

mouth kind of stretch out a little bit.

All right.

So once we have those lips drawn in then we want to talk about the teeth.

So when it comes to drawing the teeth especially in character designs you don't actually want to draw

every individual tooth in there it's much better to simplify things.

So the simple idea of the shape in the form of the teeth is basically you angle out a line like that

and that corner and a line like that in that corner so there's just a little area in here that we can

fill in with black.

And that's basically the back corners of the mouth where it's really dark.

You can't see and then this whole white area represents the teeth.

Now depending on whether you want to show the top and the bottom teeth that kind of depends on how big

their mouth is open how big you want their teeth to be.

In this case we can just kind of draw a line like this across the bottom to represent the line between

the top and the bottom teeth.

And we can even go ahead and shade that in a little bit darker because they're kind of be a little bit

more in shadow.

Another thing is can go ahead and kind of shade darker to lighter out here on these outside on these

edges as they go back into the mouth they're going to go into more shadows.

So we want to include that in there and there's probably gonna also be some shadow being cast right

underneath here

right.

And so on most your characters are going to want to just kind of keep it simple like that you're not

gonna want to show a lot of detail in their teeth.

If you wanted to you could just very very lightly kind of go in there and show the bottoms of the shape

of the teeth

but that's really all you want.

You can also do gums as well but you don't want to do those lines in between the teeth if you draw the

lines in between the teeth.

It's not going to look good and that's a common issue I see a lot of people run into when they're doing

character designs or drawings of people as they add those lines between the teeth and it doesn't look

very good.

Maybe you could add a few lines out here in the shadow.

All right you're in the middle.

You want to keep those lines out.

You just want to show the indication of where the shape of those teeth are.

And so that right there that little point lines up at that point right there up in the gums and it gives

you the indication of where that tooth is.

But it keeps it nice and simple and clean and beautiful looking by not drawing those lines in there

because in real life those lines are very light and you can't really hardly see them.
