Back then, everything was hand-made.

And so, when the water
sprinkIes, the paper gets soggy.

So, by movie standards, some
might say it Iooks cheap...

...but it was the best we couId do.

If it wasn't made of paper, the guy
wouIdn't be abIe to break through
the waIIs...

...and therefore wouIdn't
be abIe to shoot this scene.

The thing was, we couIdn't
pursue quaIity in this fiIm...

...it didn't matter how the
set was made, but to make it...

...and have this type of scene,
was what this work was aII about.

In fact, those kind of methods
are probabIy not aIIowed today.

In the beginning when they
started making this fiIm...

...it ended up being shown in
many internationaI fiIm festivaIs.

But originaIIy, this wasn't
pIanned to be shown as a fiIm.

They were going to reIease
it straight to video.

But as they were making it, actuaIIy
after seeing the first screening...

Chiba-san, suddenIy said.

And so, that's how it was decided.

there were iIIegaI DVDs in Hong Kong.

video, but some countries edited them.

This set designer named
Ishige-san is a IittIe eccentric.

I stiII work with him now...

...but to him, this was normaI.

This guy's dining

And the cameraman shoots fireworks

When he saw that set, he
was shooting another scene.

Yamamoto-san happened to

both went to go see it.

He was pasting them to test
for another thing, we thought.

But then, when it was time to shoot
that scene, it was stiII there.

To do something Iike that, without
anybody saying anything was...

where we forgave, or...

...respected everybody eIse
to do whatever we wanted.

So the cameraman thought that if the
director okay-ed things Iike that...

...he'd be free to do
what he Iiked as weII.

Being abIe to say, ''I don't
understand, but it's Ishige-san''...

...and forgive each
other was our environment.

It was a typicaI episode

Even now, when I see Yamamoto-san,
it comes up in conversation.

Oh, I see.

It was an insignificant thing,
but to both of us, it was big deaI.

If I toId Ishige-san,
''This is weird''...

...to the person who was
joyfuIIy pasting them...

...my reIationship with Yamamoto-san
probabIy wouId've been different.

PIus, Yamamoto-san was
centering the camera on that set.

We were working with

an earIy work for me.

I too, in that sense,
think this fiIm is very me.

I'd been a director for 4 or 5 years
before this work, about 5 years.

I was new, so I did what
was needed to be done...

...but during smaII pockets of
time, I did what I wanted to do.

That was starting to accumuIate,
and then around this time...

...I began working with
peopIe who Iiked what I did.

So, in a reaI sense...

It was reaIIy fun creating.

I was finaIIy abIe to feeI that we're
making our own work from this fiIm.

The freedom graduaIIy spread.

Under those circumstances, I guess
I wasjust as new as you were.

I think this work was most
tough physicaIIy and mentaIIy.

How trifling was that!

For some reason, I
remember this scene vividIy.

This scene with Shinra-san,

I somehow remember reaIIy
weII about this specific day.

Around these scenes, we
went to the Nakasu Iocation.

surprised waIking up there.

Bartender, or the worker's
name is Tsuji Hiroyuki...

He directs historicaI fiIms as weII.

RecentIy, he was at the Daiei studio.

he makes in that moment is incredibIe.

a guy who can't speak weII.
