for the assurance

we used quite a few props overall

but we didn't use too many props on any given day

so I just made a rudimentary reminder list for each day

so I remembered which props to bring with me to set

so what were the props we used on the assurance

and where do we get them

we used a sword

which I actually own

because I'm enough of a nerd to actually own swords

the one that we use is referred to as a hero prop

because it's an actual metal sword

has a lot of detail

and would look great in a close up

but if we needed our actor

swinging it around next to other actors

or fighting with it

we would never use an actual metal sword for that

it would more likely be made out of foam

or something light and soft

so in case another actor got bought with it or whatever

it wouldn't do any damage

or if we needed extras in the background

holding many swords

it would be way too expensive

together each real

high quality swords

that we would never even see up close

safer or less detailed props that will be seen up close

are called stunt props

because we didn't have a bigger budget

or a need for safer or less detailed props

all of the props using assurance were

technically hero props

Tiani's knapsack was handmade by my wife Heather

though she initially tried another

design that we didn't like as much

because it didn't fit the two actresses in the same way

another prop was Tiani's dagger

which I also own

because I'm a nerd

we also own the staff Tiana gave to cordaia

we bought it for Lord of the rings party

because the nerd thing

we had the banner that was drawn by our artist

Brad Singley

which was rigged on branches by Will Rose

who played the preacher

while he was waiting on set

I gave him the drawing

expecting him to just hold it up I guess

and while we were off working

he made this amazing contraption for it

that added so much the production value

we also needed a few fish for props

one on the shore

one in the campfire scene

in the film

it suggested that this is the same fish

but one was just a stunt double

realizing that I wanted a couple of big fish

for these scenes

I did a quick price check at the local fish market

as it turns out

large fish are quite expensive

I knew there had to be a better way

we were not gonna eat these fish

they're just props

so the local supermarket

I just talked to the butcher in charge of seafood

I kindly explained to him what I was looking for

and pleaded for his mercy

and he gave me one of our huge prop fish

for only $1

he also gave me a bunch of gnarly fish guts for free

because I was initially thinking

that we'd make the fish stuff a little bit more gory

of course I decided in the end

that this would just be too distracting

so I never even shot it

but in the future

if I ever need expired fish guts on the cheap

I know a guy

now because the fish aren't touched

it could be argued that they aren't props at all

they were said dressing

and you know

that's fair

by initially thought

the cordia might be spitting the spit

or picking at the fish on the shore

and those were onset decisions

to not do those things

so I still consider those fish props

the charcoal sticks used for drawing

were another important group of props

we just purchased these from a local art supply store

they were way too expensive

but they look so authentic

and they were actually working charcoals

in case we actually saw Teyani Arcri at drawing

and we did so

it was worth it to me

the assurance drawings and burlap scraps were props

as well as the laundry

Tanya was putting away in the hut

we made all those from leftover scraps of burlap

we got for the set

we'll talk more about burlap of course

next chapter

the cart that Courtea hid in was a prop

as well as the bag

that she was contained in

that was actually a great prop

we had something that

could hold natty in it

but still looked rustic

and could be conceivably homemade

Heather borrowed this cart

from someone we didn't even know

after posting a request to a Facebook group

that she was a part of

the apple that Bitsy dropped was a prop

although the sequence was cut from the final film

we just took the apple from Craft Services

but before the shoot

we made sure that

Craft Services was gonna actually have apples

now hopefully

this gives you some ideas of ways to

use props in your film

as well as where you might be able to find them
