I have a customer
coming today to look at the bar

we pulled
from the famous Hotel Kenny.

I think it's a beautiful piece.
It's got great history.

I put that bar online and got
a lot of great comments on it.

One guy
popped right away.

He called me,
said, "I want that bar."

-Hey, Glen. How're you doing?
-Ted.

-How are ya?
-Nice to meet ya.

I'm Glen.
All around fun guy.

Bar owner.
Restaurant owner.

Always looking
for a good time.

-So this is the bar, huh?
-[Ted] This is the bar!

Wow, looks great.

It's a great dimension, too.

-What kind of wood is that?
-[Ted] It's all pine.

[Glen] It was better
than I even imagined.

It's perfect for what
I'm going to use it for.

What's the history of the bar?

[Ted] We found it
in a hotel in eastern Ontario.

Oh, my God.
Look at that bar.

It catered to wealthy
tourists for over a century.

Built in the '30s.
Great condition. Revival style.

Not easy to get
this thing out.

The boys worked
all day on it.

-And now it's here.
-Wow.

[Ted] So what do you plan
on doing with this?

[Glen] Well,
I'm from Kitchener-Waterloo.

I have a place
just outside of town

and I'm building
a little bar out there,

and I just think
this'll be great,

dedicated as my little
Ronnie Hawkins bar.

Well, seriously?

It's like a tribute bar
to Ronnie Hawkins.

Ronnie Hawkins
was a legend.

Played with The Band,
Janis Joplin,

just a rock legend.

He was born in '35.

So this bar
was just about

the same vintage
as Ronnie Hawkins.

-He would like this bar?
-Oh, he loved any bar.

The scary part is he even
told me how much money

you want for it,
though, so.

heading out to Port Colborne,

Ontario to our next
salvage job and it is big.

And I mean huge.

[Brandon]
This is awesome. It's huge.

[Ted] Welcome to the historic
Robin Hood flour mill.

This was built
in the '40s.

Tons of history.

[narrator]
The Robin Hood flour plant

in Port Colborne, Ontario
was built

during the Second World War
as part

of the company's
expansion plans

to build several facilities
across Canada.

Demand for commodities
like flour

was rampant during the war,
and Robin Hood's location

on the Welland Canal
meant that the company

could send their products
further into North America.

Their comfort food played
a key role in helping morale

at a time when
people were affected

by the ongoing war
in Europe.

[Ted] Kevin's waiting inside,
he's the building manager.

Let's go.

It's an awesome space,
from outside

it looks like a fair size.

You get in here,
it is huge.

They're modernizing
the facility, so they've got

a lot of surplus
industrial equipment

they wanted to liquidate.

I'm hoping to find
any cool old industrial items.

Boom. Killer stuff.

-[Nick] How's it going?

I just wanted to bring
you guys on site today

because we have
a lot of leftover pieces

from the milling industry.

There's also a lot
of extra items that I think

that could be
of interest to you.

We're into extras.
Yeah, we're into extras.

I've got a meeting to go to.

[Ted] Look at this place!

Look at all
the lights in here!

Oh, my God. [chuckling]

Look at this one.
Copper.

[Nick] We haven't found
a copper one yet.

That's awesome.

First stop, an old
electrical supply room,

and it is packed
with stuff.

Explosion-proof lights.

These are definitely
not knockoffs.

These are 1930s,

Benjamin explosion-proof
copper lights.

Rare and valuable.

What do copper ones
sell for all cleaned up?

Say, like 500 bucks.
Look at that thing!

These are all
explosion-proof lights.

The idea behind them,
the bulb is totally encased.

So if the bulb blows,
no sparks come out.

Look at this thing.
These are Crouse-Hinds.

Highly collectible.

These are from the '40s,
maybe early '50s.

There's a lot to polish here.
Look at them all!

Were you excited

I'm glad Ted's excited,
but as soon as I saw

all those
explosion-proof lights,

I knew we were going
to have a ton of cleaning

to do back
at the station.

Get the lenses together first.

Just pile them
and I'll find more stuff.

[Brandon] Do we want
the colored ones as well?

Why not? You make it look
like a goal line.

That's cool, eh?

Look at
all these parts here.

All kinds of fittings.

-Like, these are hard to find.
-Ted's in heaven right now.

[Ted] That's so
you can hang the light.

There's thousands of dollars
worth of stuff here.

I can't put a number on it,
but look at it all.

All right, you and Nick
grab all this stuff.

I'm going to wander
and see what else I can find.

Looking at
a facility this size,

there's a lot
of ground to cover.

The three of us
walking around together

is not going
to do any good.

You got to spread out.

These little cabinets
sell microfiche negatives,

but they can be repurposed
into numerous different things.

This is where the engineers
kept all their drawings.

This mill was being modified
nonstop over the years.

But these are very neat.

Okay, all these
map cabinets are coming.

These cabinets are popular
for storing art, photography.

This draft
would even be nice.

These boys are gonna hate me,
but these are very cool pieces.

Well worth it.

[narrator] Meanwhile,
Brandon and Nick are exploring

the upper floors
of the building

and come across
a large industrial scale.

Hey, Nick!

Nick and I
are poking around

and there's
this big industrial piece

that catches
my eye right away.

I think it's a scale
that was used to weigh material

that came off the boats,
it looks really old.

I knew we couldn't leave it,
because Ted loves this stuff.

[Nick] Do you have a plan
on how we should do this?

[Brandon] Good old
fashioned muscle, baby.

You ready?
One, two, three.

[Nick] How're we getting it
down the stairs?

[Brandon]
This thing is crazy heavy.

I'm thinking
we need a different way

to get this thing down.

Rope, pulley system
down the main lift

should work perfectly.

[phone vibrating]

I just talked
to the site manager, Kevin.

He's got an update on
some more potential salvage.

I've got to meet him
at a big old tower.

What is this place, Kev?

[Kevin] So this is our old
Marine Tower.

[Ted] Oh, what's that?

Well, look at that.
Close to the water!

[Kevin] Absolutely,
when this was a flour mill,

we used to unload vessels
with this tower.

The tower would wheel up
beside the vessel

and drop its bucket elevator
in and pull the product off.

And it would go down
the beltway we saw outside.

[Ted] The Welland canal's
a critical part

of the shipping route
for North America.

[Kevin] Absolutely.

[narrator] The first
Welland Canal was built

in the early 19th century
to allow the passage

of ships between two
Great Lakes, Erie and Ontario.

The fourth
and current Welland Canal,

completed in 1932,

uses a series of eight locks
to help ships navigate

the 100 meter elevation change
between the two lakes.

The cargo that
passes through the canal

is valued at over 15 billion
US dollars per year,

and the canal remains
one of the most impressive

engineering marvels
in the world.

This is dated
technology now.

-Absolutely.
-Everything's for grabs?

I noticed some more lights here
if you don't want them.

[Kevin] Absolutely.
Those lights are up for grabs.

Really? Okay, I'll get
the boys to take those down.

-These pulleys and everything?
-[Kevin] These pulleys

are absolutely available,
I just need two things.

I need everything
taken out of this place

as well as
the tower taken down.

So this whole tower
has got to come down?

Yes.

The vessels
that come in now

are a lot longer
than they used to be,

and they interfere
with this part of the tower.

[Ted] The frame
of this tower is constructed

of high grade steel, gotta be
several hundred tons here.

I'm running Flashback. I can't
take on a job like this myself.

You need
a demolition guy to do this.

I know a guy
that can take this down.

He's gonna
have to be good.

The tower is 162 feet tall
and 600 metric tons of steel.

[Ted]
My head's spinning now.

Kevin's talking about,
like, 600 tons of scrap.

So that's over
$200,000 in the scrap market.

That could change
everything for me.

So, yeah, I'm in.

This could be big.
I'll go get the boys.

We'll start
cleaning this out,

and I'll make
a couple of calls.

[Nick] So I'll hold the rope

[narrator] Brandon and Nick
are carefully lowering

a very heavy
and valuable industrial scale.

Down ten stories
with a rope.

over that bar,

like a fulcrum
for the rope to go around.

And we're just going
to slowly lower down that hole.

-Okay, ready?
-Yeah.

You sure
this is a good idea?

It's as good
as an idea we've got.

-Okay, keep lowering.
-[Nick] Yeah.

-We're good.
-[Brandon] We're good?

[Nick] Okay,
let's make this snappy,

I'm running
out of grip strength.

[Brandon] Lower.
Do you want to trade?

-I'll take over.

[Brandon] I'm lowering
the scale right over top

of Nick's head
and I can see

this rope's starting
to come apart.

Could be big trouble.

[Brandon] Oh, [bleeped].

We're getting to this real
thin end of the road, bro.

This rope's
on the last thread, dude.

[narrator] Brandon and Nick
are carefully lowering

a very heavy and valuable
industrial scale

down ten stories
with a rope.

This rope's
on the last thread, dude.

[Nick] Just keep coming.
We're close.

-Did you get it?
-[Nick] We got it.

[Brandon] At the last second
this knot slipped right off,

but luckily it was only a
couple of feet off the ground.

Teamwork and muscle
always gets the job done,

and I hope
Ted loves it.

He better.

[narrator] Ted meets up
with his friend Adam,

a demolition expert,

to discuss
taking down the tower

and the potential windfall
from the 600 tons of steel.

-[Adam] It's massive.
-[Ted] Huge, man.

The whole building's
basically steel

with a little bit
of concrete.

We're talking
over 600 tons.

That's over $200,000
in scrap.

The big question here
is how can I take

on a demolition job
like this?

I mean, it looks risky.
It looks dangerous.

If I'm taking this on,
I need a partner.

-What do you think?
-It is a thing of beauty.

I've seen it
from the highway

and I've seen it
in pictures,

but it's definitely
bigger beside you.

[Ted] I'm on my own now,
so taking on

a big demo like
this is just not happening.

I need a partner like Adam.
He is a total pro.

I may have
the salvage rights here,

but I'll cut him in 50/50

for getting this thing
down on the ground safely.

That's a big job.
You think you're up to it?

Most definitely,
I love a challenge.

I mean, you got all this,
too, this framing here.

[Adam] It's all got to go,
we've got to

come up with a plan here.

[narrator]
Adam has to move the tower

clear of the mill
into a safe drop zone.

Before he can do that,
all of the steel a-frames

need to be cut down
and removed.

-It's on wheels, too.
-[Adam] Yeah, it'll be nice

and easy to roll over here,
that'll be the easy part.

[narrator] Once the a-frames
are out of the way,

Adam's plan
is to pull the tower

towards the drop zone

with his 40 tonne excavator.

Give her a tug
with the machine, drag it down.

[Ted] So you're thinking
we just tip this thing over?

It's, like, 160-odd feet
right beside the canal.

I mean, it's got
to go this way, Adam,

because if it goes that way,
it's going in the canal.

Look how close
that is to the water.

-That's freaking me out.
-It's three feet away.

[Ted] If that goes
into the canal,

I know it's going
to cause a major problem.

What's going to happen
if it's a windy day?

[Adam] We're definitely
not going to be able to do it

on a windy day,
that's for sure.

[Ted]
So, what do you think?

I mean,
it's a scary project, Adam.

Yeah, we got
our work cut out for us.

[Ted]
Adam's agreed to do it,

so I'm excited,
but very nervous.

I've never done
anything like this.

We're taking on half the costs
and half the payout.

We've got
to move fast because

they had to cut
the power to the whole mill.

The owner is right on our case,
so it better go good.

[Adam] This is gonna be
a mega challenge for us

to get this thing down,
but we'll get it done.

We're working with
a very tight budget here.

This job is all about
profit and scrap,

so everything we do
needs to be efficient,

but it also
has to be 100% safe.

[narrator 2] Ted has tasked
Brandon and Nick

to take down the rest
of the explosion-proof lights.

-Are you going up?
-[Nick] Yeah.

[Brandon] Can you unscrew it,
or are you just

-going to snip all of them?
-Oh, they're getting snipped.

We've got
a lot of these to do.

That was actually
really easy.

[Brandon] They're hanging
from the ceiling,

the rafters,
objects all over the place.

It's going to be way harder
to get down than I thought.

What'd Ted say these are
gonna sell for again?

[Brandon] These are the copper,
so he said

once they're all cleaned up,
we could sell these

-for, like, 500 apiece.
-[Nick] That's unreal.

I don't think
this ladder's going to work.

I'm gonna grab
a different one.

[Brandon]
Yeah, I think you're right.

[objects rattling]

How is that ladder
going to be any different?

[Nick] It's straight so you can
lean it up against the wall.

You know, like, geometry.

[groaning]

-Need me to come help you?
-[Nick] Give me a sec.

I'm struggling here.

I don't usually have
issues opening ladders.

Nothing was lining up, none
of the locks were clicking in.

What is wrong
with this thing?

[Brandon] Nick says
he's grabbing a ladder

and now
he can't open it.

Like, I don't know, man.

Hey, Nick,
come see this ship coming by.

[Nick] All right.

You're always slacking, eh?

-Look at this thing!
-[Nick] Oh, that's huge.

Coolest thing I've seen
so far is the ships.

I mean, we're right
on the Welland Canal.

The ships pull up
and get loaded. It's awesome.

[Brandon]
Done with that ladder yet,

The ladder's good,
let's get back to work.

I was waiting on you, man!

[Nick]
Three, two, one.

[narrator] Ted takes
one last look around

for any hidden gems.

[Ted]
What the hell is this?

Look at that.

Somebody's doing some fishing
on their lunch break here.

[objects clattering]

Yeah, I do like this.

Before they hit the road,

Nick calls Ted over to
show him the industrial scale

that Brandon found
on the top floor.

-This?
-[Nick] Yeah.

-You like it? Yeah.
-That?

No, we're not taking that.

-You're kidding me.
-No, why would I want that?

Do you know how much work
we did bringing that

all the way down here?

-Why? Is it heavy?
-Oh, my God.

Yes, I do!
That thing is wicked cool!

-Broke my heart.
-[Ted speaking indistinctly]

It's a really tough sell,
but I'll get the right buyer.

You'll probably get

Looks like it's got good bones.
It's pretty versatile.

The details with the circles
inside, along the mirror.

-That's Eastlake.
-Eastlake. It's gorgeous.

[Ted] This piece
is from the late 1800s.

This came out
of a historic hotel

in eastern Ontario that has
a resident ghost, apparently.

This piece was tucked
away in a small, creepy cabin.

This hotel was, in its day,
a really nice place.

They think it's haunted.
It's not.

-[Jenny] You guarantee that?
-[Ted] Yeah, for sure.

There's no
haunted stuff in here.

It's a nice piece.

I'd refinish that
and sell it for 800 bucks.

-Yeah?
-[Ted] Yeah.

-What're you asking for--

of the demolition

of the Marine Tower.

Adam and his crew need
to cut down the steel a-frames

to clear a path
for the drop zone.

[Adam] This isn't
your typical demolition job.

There's only a few
of these things in the world,

and I think this is one
of the last ones.

[objects clattering]

[rock music playing]

[Adam] It's got a tremendous
amount of challenges

and there is no technique
that everybody uses.

This is something you
have to figure out as you go.

[rumbling]

[narrator] Getting
the a-frames down safely

is a big win
for the team.

They also weigh 100 tons,

a great start
to the scrap total.

With the a-frames nearly
cleared it's almost time

for Adam to pull
the tower into place

so it can fall
into the drop zone.

[phone ringing]

Hey, buddy. What's up?

You got
the a-frames all out?

[Adam]
Yeah, we're maybe

three quarters the way done.

It's sketchy,
we got the canal on one side

and hydro lines on the other,
but we're getting it down.

[Ted]
I know it's risky, eh?

[Adam] Hey, so more expense
adding on here.

The engineer
doesn't love the fact

that the cables are used.

So he wants us to buy

two brand new
300-foot inch and half cables.

-[Ted] How much?
-[Adam] Probably about

5,000 bucks a piece.

[Ted] 5000 each?

Ten grand?
Oh, my God!

When I took on
this job with Adam,

we agreed to split the cost,
but right away,

$10,000 for stronger cables.

I'm already in the hole.

I know we need the cables

to pull the tower
into the right spot,

but it's already
eaten into our profit.

[Adam] We got to have 'em.
A necessary evil.

of the demolition.

Ted and Nick
are back on site

as Adam struggles to move
the tower into the drop zone.

[Ted]
Oh, man, this is a big day.

So I'm here
to help oversee things.

We have to get
that tower into position

by the end of today
or the costs

are going to be
out of control.

Good pile of scrap.
Oh, look at that.

-All the a-frames are gone.
-[Nick] Holy crap.

He's really done
a lot of work here.

Big time.
Look at this pile of scrap.

[Nick]
This isn't all of it, is it?

[Ted] No.
He's got 100 tons.

He's shipped out
some already, for sure.

-[Nick] Yeah.
-[Ted] Let's check him out.

[Nick] All right.

[Ted] Wewe have to hook up
big cables to the tower,

pull along the tracks
to get it clear of the mill,

and in line with where
we wanted to lay down.

There's no book
on how to move an old building

along railway tracks.

It's quite dangerous.

I mean, that tower
is right beside the canal.

It's a very tricky job.

Hopefully, you don't
rip the trucks right off.

We good?

[squeaking]

[narrator] The tower weighs
over 1.5 million pounds

and hasn't been moved
in almost 40 years.

Adam will use his excavator
to try to pull the cables

which are under
massive pressure.

[Nick]
I'm a bit nervous for Adam.

If these cables snap,
they could come back

and hit Adam
right in the face.

[cables squeak]

[Ted]
It's gonna snap, look out!

Holy [bleeped].

[cables squeak]

-[Ted] Holy [bleeped].
-[bleeped]

[narrator] Adam has failed
to move the tower.

They had it all rigged up,
ready to roll,

started pulling,
one of the shackles snapped.

[Nick]
We hooked on to that...

and then,
it just snapped like butter.

Good thing
nobody was injured.

So we move forward.

[narrator] And the team
is running out of time.

So I'm going
to call wreckers.

-Yeah? Like a heavy wrecker?
-[Adam] Yeah.

So we can pull with the haul
and the heavy wrecker.

-[Ted] Yeah.
-Double it up.

Oh, that'll move it.

I hope so.

[Ted] I thought
the tower would just

roll along the tracks.

I thought
it was going to be

the easy part
of this whole job.

-It's on wheels, too.
-[Adam] Yeah.

It'll be nice
and easy to roll over here.

-That'll be the easy part.
-It's still sitting there.

I was hoping to have
this down in its fall point

these guys get this moving.

Ted and Adam
have paid big bucks

for a heavy wrecker
to come help,

but they haven't
had any luck.

We got them in the position
and they hooked up

all their cables and they gave
it and tugged on their own

and they couldn't
do it alone either.

So what's the plan?

We're gonna hook
on to the tower

with the excavator
and the heavy wrecker.

We're going to double up
and give it a pull

and get it moving
into the drop zone.

[man] Are you sure
this is the best plan?

Yeah, we're hoping,
but you never know.

[narrator] The guys
are down to their last chance

to move the tower.

Both the heavy wrecker
and the excavator

are now
hooked up to the axles.

That's 100 tons
of pulling power.

[Adam]
It's now or never.

The only thing is,
they're coming underneath me.

So when he's pulling,
it would actually be trying

to lift me up.

add some screws,

add some glue, and probably
some caulking to cover this up.

[narrator] As the team
prepares to start

the final phase of the job,

the site is cordoned off
to keep the public safe.

The plan is to tip the tower
on an angle with jacks

and line it up
in the drop zone,

then pull it down
with two heavy wreckers.

But they have
no way of knowing

if it will fall in the zone

or tumble back
into the canal.

The next step is,

jack up the one side...

block that
with some wood...

lower it down
onto the wood beams...

and it'll already
start tipping.

We get it to a certain point,
pull it right over.

[narrator] The plan
is to jack the tower

about 16 feet
past its center of gravity,

or it won't come down.

If they try
to pull it now,

the cables can snap

and the tower
could spring back

and fall
into the canal.

Adam has pushed the jacks
as far as they can go.

The tower is still
only leaning 14 feet

past the center of gravity.

There's still maybe too much
pressure on the cables

for the wreckers
to pull it down,

but they're out of time.

Adam gives the guys
the thumbs up

and they start pulling.

[Ted]
It's now or never.

We are out of time,
out of options.

This tower
has got to come down now.

[narrator]
The two heavy wreckers,

weighing a combined 130 tons

begin to slowly
pull on the cable

secured
to the leaning tower.

If they pull too hard,
the cables could snap,

so they expertly feather
their winch controls,

hoping they hold
and that the tower falls

into the drop zone.

[Adam]
Make it steady, guys.

-[Ted] It's coming.
