to salvage,

to find hidden treasure.

doesn't stop there.

Our mission
is to restore these pieces

-and find the perfect buyer.

or too hard for us.

Ted's starting his day

with a quick solo salvage
at an old diner

a couple of hours
from Flashback HQ.

This old diner's a quick hit,
but I couldn't turn it down.

You never know
what you're going to find

in a place like this.
There's not much here.

I mean, there's some
used restaurant equipment.

Maybe there's something
in the basement, let's go.

There was a real fire
down here.

That is heavily charred.

The whole floorboards
and everything.

This looks like
there could be some stuff here.

[chuckles] This is a cool old
butcher's scale from the 1930s.

This could be about
400 bucks or so right here.

It's pretty cool
and it's pretty heavy.

Whoa.
These old lights.

They're milk glass lights!

That's really art deco, hey.
There's six of them here.

At 250 a pop,
that's 1,500 bucks.

[Narrator] Ted packs up
and is quickly reminded

why he usually brings help.

The boys are hanging
the new interior sign.

John's giving the sea cans
a little makeover

and tracking the inventory.

And AJ's lighting up the place
with a new display.

-It looks level to me.

You can't see from there.
That's way too far away.

[Ted] We got loads of salvage
to go through and sell.

We really need to start
moving more items fast.

I hope we can get
lots of big buyers in here.

[John] Oh, thanks.

-Who's that?
-Delivery for you, Ted.

Oh, that's the hotel stuff,
let's see.

-[John] Yeah.
-We're gonna go over this.

Details for the team's

next salvage job
have arrived.

It's a 19th century resort
with huge potential.

So far, so good.
We're rocking it.

We're taking it to the next
level with a big new job.

It's an old hotel, 1870.

This is the main hotel
and we got all these cabins.

Eleven acres.
It's a giant property.

It's located just south

of the nation's capital,
Ottawa.

The owners just bought it.

It's a little rundown.

They want to go modern,
get rid of the old stuff.

And I said, "Well,
we can help you with that.

-I'll do the old stuff."
-When do we go on this trip?

[Ted] We're going
to change it up a little bit.

Nick and I are going,
I need you to stay here

at the station,
work with John and AJ.

-Stuff is just piling up.
-Okay.

We've got, like,
700 pieces in the sea cans.

What do you want us
to bring in first?

The money stuff.
The big ticket items.

Clean it up. Price it.

I think
the three of us can handle it.

-Yeah, we'll be fine.
-[AJ] Yeah, we got this.

Well, don't have
too much fun, all right?

-I never have fun.
-[laughing]

There's not too many
of these old hotels left.

To be honest,
a lot of the old ones

are burnt down,
been torn down.

I paid a lot of money
for the Hotel Kenney Salvage.

I'm a little nervous,
but it's a huge property.

This is a great opportunity
for us as a business to grow.

We're going to find

some very cool things here,

I can feel it.

[Narrator]
The Hotel Kenney was built

in 1888,
near Jones Falls

on the world-famous
Rideau Canal.

Its location made the hotel
popular for American tourists

travelling by steamboat
from nearby New York state.

Some of its
famous guests included

US President William Taft

and Queen Victoria's daughter,
Princess Louise,

who called the area the most
beautiful place in Canada.

The hotel was run by members

of the Kenney family
for four generations

until its sale in 2008.

[Ted] The Hotel Kenney
property is huge.

It's got 11 buildings
including a general store.

I'm meeting the new owners,

Cora and Jeff,
in the main hotel.

They told me
there's some cabins here.

I thought
I go check one out first.

When I talked to them,
they said,

"You're gonna like
what you find here."

But I'll be the judge
of that.

[Nick] Hello.

-This is rustic, eh?
-[Ted] Yeah.

-There's a nice piece.
-[Nick] That's cool.

[Nick] How old
do you think this is?

It's the late 1800s.

-So are we taking it?
-Definitely.

It's only a couple
hundred bucks cleaned up.

Maybe $250 or so.

There's another old dresser
up here we should grab too.

This has got good age.

but I think the main money's
in that hotel.

Ted and Nick begin
to salvage the Hotel Kenny.

-This is awesome.
-Look at this.

It's very cool, eh?
Oh, my God.

Look at that bar.

-That bar is stellar!
-Think you can get that out?

I'll take a look around the
bottom, see what I can do,

-and then I'll let you know.
-I'll go do some exploring.

-We've got a long way to go,

but if we can get
that bar out undamaged,

it's five grand all day long.

a mysterious trunk

in the basement
of a 19th century hotel

once frequented by celebrities
and famous politicians.

There's something in it.
Nick!

I have no idea
how old this is.

Could be 1800s.
Could even be late 1700s.

If it's that old,
it could be worth great money.

And if there's
something inside,

it could be worth even more.

[Narrator]
At the station,

the team is making progress,
going through hundreds

of inventory items
and setting up displays.

[Brandon]
Now, this is nice, John.

Okay, what else
do you want me to bring?

Don't break this thing

I know,
I'm not saying you will,

but let's be careful, okay?

You're treating me
like a kid.

I love to hang around
with John all day

and do inventory

-We find a lot of trunks, eh?

This could be
a couple of hundred years old.

This is
a sweet trunk though.

Working with Ted, we find
so many trunks and boxes.

This one
is definitely the craziest.

You got to get
this lock open to open this,

and there may be
another lock inside here.

[Narrator]
Trunks have been around

for thousands of years,
but the most familiar styles

date from
the late 18th century

to the early
20th century.

Most trunks were built
from a pine box,

which was then covered with
other materials

to protect it.

Some of the earliest trunks
were covered

with metal and leather.

Later versions were covered

with paper,
canvas and tin.

They came with a wide variety
of handles and locks,

and were made
in many different sizes.

In the 20th century,
trunks began to fade

in popularity
as they were replaced

by the modern suitcase.

How do you think
we're going to get this open?

Hoping one of these keys
in the closet would work?

-Not one of those keys work?
-No, nowhere close.

Could be very cool
to find something in there.

But what can we do?
We've got to get moving here.

I've been part
of the Hotel Kenney

for the past number of years.

Hi, I'm John.

I was the managing director
of Hotel Kenney.

It was my responsibility
to look after the hotel.

That was always,
uh, interesting.

We do have a ghost.

-A ghost?
-A ghost.

Lydia was a guest
of Hotel Kenney.

She used to come here
every summer into her 90s.

She just loved
the place so much.

They scattered
her ashes in the garden.

I found this plaque
that Lydia's ashes

are spread in the garden.

Some people might find it
unsettling.

The staff here used to see her

up on the second floor,

just wandering
through the hallways

near where her room was.

Her hair was done up.

She wore an apron,
but they said

they couldn't see
any facial features.

[Ted]

I've done
all kinds of old buildings.

I really don't believe
any spirit ghost stories.

I don't know.

She's not going to bother me.

I'm trying to save
the history,

that's what I do.

of the hotel.

It's made from some old signs.

would look better

if we flipped it around,

[Ted] The unique thing
about this salvage,

there's a lot of
old pieces from the 1800s

right up to
probably 1950 or so,

and you never know
what you're going to find.

This must be the creepiest doll
I've ever seen, Ted.

[Ted] That's scary.

The dolls look like they belong
in some protective cases.

I'm not bringing them back

This is a very old doll.

For sure, 19th century.

Look at the construction,
it's stuffed with straw.

This is definitely
haunted house material,

the dolls came

we're tight for time,

but I've got to take anything
of value from this place.

where she used to stay.

Coming in and seeing the box,
it was wonderful.

To me,
it was like a magnet.

an extremely rare piece,

and I found it in the basement
of a hotel in eastern Ontario.

It looks way better
in the flesh

than it does from photos.

I've known Douglas
for years.

Our paths don't cross

He's the cream of the crop.

Valuing something like this,
I am totally in the dark,

so I go to the professional.

So that tells us
something right here.

If this was a strongbox
made to hold coinage or money,

it would have all been oak.

-So now the pine,

that tells you something.

It was used to hold
something precious

because you've got
a three-locked front.

Boxes like that do not come
across one's path very often.

In fact, if one or two
of those come past you

in a lifetime,
you're very lucky.

It's not an English box.

An English would probably be
a little more restrained.

In most great Spanish chests,
all the leather is tooled.

-Engraved, embossed.
-[Douglas] Yes.

And this is plain

and it's
a one of a kind.

And so the value,
of course, goes up, so...

[Ted] What's the age
we're looking at here,

mid to late 1700?

I think it's probably
more like 1650.

and the 17th century.

that it is English,

because of something inside,

then it's probably Charles I,
Charles II.

Aesthetically,
it's a wonderful thing.

It has
this great history

that we're sort of
getting to-- to understand.

But I think you have
to explore the mystery

of this thing
a little more.

You're willing

but if we open it
and it is more,

it could be
8,000 to 12,000?

Once it's restored.

You break into it,
it may devalue it

or the value may go up.

It could be
full of treasure.

the style is completely wrong.

You'd still get smoothness.
