from our first few jobs.

a bit chaotic in here.

A 19th century farmhouse

and an old hat factory
full of machinery.

When Nick said

for over a year now,
and I've never had a vacation.

[narrator] Ted, Brandon
and Rochelle arrive

at their first
salvage job in Belleville.

A 19th century farmhouse

that was built
by the Parrott family.

The Parrotts were
United Empire Loyalists,

subjects that supported
the British Crown

during the American
revolutionary war.

Many Loyalist fled
the United-States

following the defeat
of the British in 1781.

Soon after, they began
settling the northern shore

of Lake Ontario.

Loyalists first arrived
in the Belleville area

in 1784.

[Brandon]
What do you think Ted?

It's a lot bigger than
I thought. I love these places.

This is one of the oldest
farmhouses I've ever done.

Anything tied to
the United Empire Loyalists,

I am all over that.

The machine's coming
in a few hours. Let's go.

Look at the lightning rods.
Look at them.

There's one,
way over there too.

Six of them.

How are we going
to get those down?

How you gonna
get those down?

First thing I see
six lightning rods.

Really nice ones.
In great shape.

The last year
we were in Killaloe.

Where we saved
a couple of lightning rods.

But we couldn't
save them all.

To me, they're,
like, a piece of art.

They were $300 a piece.

When you get
a set of six of these,

that's very rare.

I hope I get 2,000
for all of them.

Supertest Gas Company
is an all Canadian gas company.

They started in 1919.

Little chip right there.

Little bit of silver loss.
It's got good age.

Supertest stuff
is very desirable.

And to find a mirror like that,
that's awesome, man.

A lot of history in this house.
I'm taking those bags.

This would have been, like,
the high tech washing machine

in the day.
Late 1800s.

With the right buyer,
it's like probably 550.

You know who buys this?
Somebody with an old farmhouse,

wants that look.
You can put ice in there

and use it for a cooler.

But I will sell it,
guaranteed.

Basement, you could tell
there was a major flooding

there over the years.

That's where the rats live,
I think.

This is a nice box.
Beautiful blanket box.

I'll get Brandon

a treasure box for me.

Those are late 1800s.

Easily the oldest
one I've ever found.

It is Mr. Parrott.

He'd have to be a big shot to
get a picture made back then.

something that tied in

to the history here,
and that's it.

can be pretty valuable.

about these portraits.

They're in pretty rough shape,
but I love 'em.

That's J. M. Parrot.

That's the man who owned
this land. It's a sign,

plus it's got historical
significance. Two things I love.

Once again,
the nook and crannies pay off.

It's like a little attic
up there, crawl space.

I got some wicked stuff
up there.

Let's get
the trailer packed up.

[narrator] Before Ted and
the team leave the farmhouse.

They have to get
the six lightning rods down.

And that's Brandon's job.

Once I get up there,

I'll have
you throw me that stuff, 'kay?

[Ted] I'm gonna get Brandon
to get up on that roof,

and save those lightning rods.

There are six of them
on that roof.

They've been up there
for over 100 years,

they're worth a lot,
and they're beautiful.

I need that ladder first
before you throw me the wood.

My biggest job
is getting

these lightning rods
down from the roof.

It's going to be a challenge
because it is pretty high.

And snow on the roof.
I'm gonna have to figure out

a way not to fall off the roof.

-You all right?
-[Rochelle] Taking the ladder.

[Ted]
We got to get the rods down.

But I'm concerned
about the safety.

I mean,
Brandon's just gung ho.

I don't want to see
the guy falling off the roof

I kind of wanted

To get to the top of the roof

Brandon is going to try to build
temporary steps with scrap wood.

[Ted] I'm shaking
the whole damn roof.

[narrator] It's Brandon's job
to retrieve the six

lightning rods
on top of the Parrott
farmhouse.

[Ted] I'm shaking

-[Brandon] Yeah, I am okay.

Put the first step in, as soon
as I step off the ladder,

it slips
from under my feet.

You know, I mean, the ladder
sitting on a sloped roof

and snow all over it.

Glad I was there,
because it kinda saved him

from tumbling right down.

[Brandon] I thought I was
going down for a minute.

[narrator] Once he reaches
the roof's peak,

Brandon attaches
his harness to an O-ring

to avoid falling
30 feet to the ground

as he carefully collects
the lightning rods.

[Brandon]
I'll put it in the bag

and lower the bag to you.

Slide the whole thing down.

You know,
just lower it to Rochelle.

-You got it?
-[Rochelle] Got it.

[Brandon grunts] Oh,
they're really in there, dude.

[Ted] Watch it doesn't

There's a lot on the line
with these lightning rods,

and I don't want to break any.

so I use mostly rusty,
old antique components.

a ton of islets in its day.

He's American.
They had money, this family.

Judging by the way
they go together here,

I'm going to say
they're from the 1850s.

about the print process, Ted?

No, but I know this is
an Eastlake chair

That's how I date stuff.

You know, the negative, which
is captured in the camera

-would be this size.
-[Ted] That big?

-[Ted] That's a huge camera.

Because these old
egg based prints

-are contact prints.
-Egg based?

Egg whites are beaten up,
added salt.

They put it in a tray,

You'd soak that same paper
in the silver-oxide.

-[Ted] Yeah.
-[Mark] Then the glass print

with the negative on it
and the piece of paper

get squished together

and you'd take it out
in the sunlight

and let it expose through
the negative onto the paper,

and that's what
created the print.

I just wonder
who thought of this.

Exactly, someone with
too many chickens, I guess.

-I don't know.

I dunno how it works!

So how rare are these?

I got to get a value
of what they're worth.

Anything from the 1850s.

you know there aren't
that many around.

And for, you know, how many
things 170 look this good?

You know what, most of the
image is still here.

That's fantastic. Usually by
now these have faded right out.

Now a collector, like myself,
would hang these on a wall.

Preserve them, get frames done,
put the right glass in them,

you'd probably get maybe...

So how rare are these?

I got to get a value
of what they're worth.

Anything from the 1850s.

you know there aren't
that many around.

And for, you know, how many
things 170 look this good?

I'm sure they have
family value to somebody.

There's no direct descendants
to this family anymore.
