a stunning and untamed region
where mangrove swamps
abut rainforests,

the Atlantic
meets the Pacific

and the weather can turn
deadly at any moment.

Nine Americans
handpicked to disagree
about everything...

I may be a Karen.

I've been vegan
for eight years.

I'm a senior rabbi.

...are arriving here.

[Nate] All they know, they've
come to live...

in one of the most
challenging social
experiments

-ever devised.
-How's it going, guys?

[Nate] But this isn't the
first time it's been tried.

The year was 1973

and America was reeling
from the Vietnam War,

Watergate, recession.
Americans and the world were
incredibly divided.

That's when an anthropologist
named Santiago Genoves had
a wild idea.

He gathered 11 people from
all walks of life

and set them
adrift in the Atlantic Ocean

aboard a tiny raft.

His goal was to see
if these people could set
aside their differences

and work together for the
common good.

-[woman] Thank you.
-[Nate] Unfortunately, the
answer was a definitive no.

The trip descended
into conflict, chaos
and near mutiny.

-Now, 50 years later...
-[indistinct shouting]

We're doing it

again.

[Nate] But this time
the stakes will be
higher than ever...

-A lot of talk but not
a lot of action.

-New participants.

Can these radically
different Americans,

find a way to put aside

This is not about race.

home a life-changing

We're about to find out.

We're in Panama,
we pulled in these people
from all over the U.S.

for some sort of social
experiment. We have no idea
what we're getting into.

That's just like a really
exciting vibe.

people to be here

that are radically
different than me
in many ways.

[Merissa] Everyone's
different, age is different,
background's different,

heights, it can be
incredibly challenging.

I know I'm gonna
be on a boat. I may or
may not have supplies.

I know there is jungles and
mountains and water and money.

What I know about this
social experiment is that
I need quick-drying clothes

and that's really it. [laughs]

I'm Nate Boyer.

Welcome. I'm sure
you're all eager to hear
about the journey ahead.

But before I get to that,
let me tell you a bit
about myself.

I served in the Army
as a Green Beret.

And also was very fortunate
to play football in the NFL.

-Wow.
-[Nate] From the battlefield
to the ball field,

I've seen people come together
from all walks of life

and accomplish the
seemingly impossible.

But I've also seen teams
turn on one another and fail.

The question is, what kind
of team are you gonna be?

-Winning team.
-Absolutely.

Yeah.

Now I wanna tell you
about the Acaliexperiment.

The year was 1973.

It felt like the country and
the world was just ripping
themselves apart.

Sounds familiar.

And so an anthropologist
named Santiago Genoves
gathered 11 people,

handpicked to disagree
about everything.

He put them on a raft
and floated them out to sea

to see if people under
pressure could put their
differences aside

and pull together
for a common goal.

Wow.

[Nate] Now, once again
our country and our
planet is divided.

-Agreed.
-Absolutely.

So, what better time than now
to redo Genoves' experiment.

Much like the original
experiment, you have also
been handpicked

for your radically
different world views.

The devout and the non
believer, conservative
and liberals,

hunter, vegans,
you're all here.

I actually love Nate kind
of leading this experiment.

It kind of gave me a little
bit more of an idea of

how big of an
opportunity this is.

Russell, do you feel
like you can live and work
with anyone,

no matter their beliefs?

I know I can.

Russell's definitely
a red neck, he is a racist,
I got you.

My eye is on you.
No doubt.

You are about to be
set adrift in the
Pacific Ocean

and work together.

Same as the original crew
50 years ago.

They had to find food,
catch fish, together or
they all to suffer

as a group.

They did what they had to do
to survive.

We're gonna have plenty
to eat tonight.

[Nate] But they were also
competitive, backstabbing
and at each other's throats.

You're looking stupid.

Which tells you a little
something about human nature.

I think it is important
right now to do this
social experiment.

There's a lot of chaos in
the world, people with these
very different viewpoints

disagreeing and focusing on
what we disagree on and not
enough on our commonalities.

[Nate] Fifty years later,
the question is will it be
every man or woman

for themselves.

You're no better than me.

Well, we're gonna find out.

And to do that, we're turning
up the heat even further
than Santiago ever dared.

By adding cold, hard cash.

[CJ] This is gonna be
a good situation.

I'm money motivated, I want to
build a life myself and my
future children,

but I think this is also going
to give me a chance to learn
a lot about myself.

[Nate] Over the course of this
experiment, this group will
collectively earn money

-by completing challenges
called bounty missions.
-[all cheering]

-[Nate] The money you earn
from each mission...
-[grunts]

...will go into
a collective pot.

If you make it to the end
of this experiment,

you'll share all the
money you've amassed equally.

Yeah!

[Nate] I say if because I can
tell you right now,

some of you
will not make it.

But more on that later.

You need to focus on
building the strongest
possible team.

No matter what that takes.

And I'm gonna warn you,
these missions
are gonna be tough.

If you don't pull
together as a team...

...you will leave a lot
of money on the table.

Plus there will be twists
that will force you to choose
yourself

or the group.

In order to maximize your
earnings, you'll need to set
aside your differences

and work together.

Despite our differences,
are we fundamentally
in this together

and working towards
a common goal?

Or are we just
greedy backstabbers
in it for ourselves?

But before you head
to your new home,

there's just one more thing.

spent months

planning, sorting and
organizing their supplies
and provisions.

The strategy is to
divide up in threes. But we
need to first figure out

who here speaks Spanish,
who has survival experience?

Like we need to put one
of those types of people

on each one of the
groups of three.

While you're doing this,

Five hundred dollars for each
group. Each group focuses
on different things.

I've pretty much always
been in leadership roles.

In the military, I was
a warfare officer,

I was a leader in
corporate America,

and then now I'm a senior
rabbi, in a synagogue
in Georgetown, Texas.

I grew up Christian.

And a lot of my friends
when I was in the Navy
were Jewish.

And by me listening, I learned
and then before you know it,
I'm Jewish too.

In this social experiment,
for me this is a little bit
about the money.

I would love to take my
children to all the countries
I've been to in the Navy.

I would love to be able
to give to someone in need.

I don't have the ability
to do that right now and I
would fight for that ability.

As a Black rabbi
who's also conservative,

if we can't discuss race,
religion or politics,
I can pretty much never talk.

And when I know someone's
wrong and I know I'm right,

I have all day. [laughs]

-We'll focus on tools.

I cook. I'm a chef.

girl from Tennessee

and I wanna see what else
is out there in this world.

I think other people
will look at me as just
some scrawny little girl.

But that couldn't
be more wrong.

I'm usually a pretty
confrontational person.

I don't like beating
around the bush.

If something needs
to be said or needs
to be done,

I'm gonna do it.

I take risks,
I enjoy adventure

and as a woman,
I shouldn't be dismissed.

If you're good at something
you're good at something

and I think we should focus
on our strengths

rather than focusing on what
we have between our legs.

I may not have all the
expertise of survival skills
and what not.

But I'm willing to learn,
I'm willing to do whatever
it takes.

need for 21 days at sea?

biggest thing for me is,

I do eat quite a lot and
my protein intake
is quite high.

And so I'm really interested
in getting hunting equipment,

fishing equipment,
that sort of thing.

[Summer]
We need this, you guys.
Do you think we need this?

Protein, yes.

-It is protein,
but it's unnecessary.
-[Jonathan] Some protein?

I don't eat fish though,

-so protein is really
important for me.
-I know.

I've been vegan for about
eight years now.

I think that we have
a responsibility as humans

to protect everybody else.

I was Miss Montana
USA in 2020.

As you can imagine
being a vegan in Montana would

stir up a lot of drama.

I do anti-fur protests,
anti-fishing protests.

People's first impression
of me is that
I'm pretty intense.

I think that that could
be pretty fair.

Killing animals in the way
that we do is wrong.

When I am passionate
about something,
it's the end all be all.

I will give it
absolutely everything.

Coming into the
social experiment,

money doesn't
really drive me.

I'm not like a money over
everything person.

I'm extremely competitive.

I swear, we're teams,
we're gonna survive
without that almond milk.

We have to work together
to prioritize our needs.

I don't know how far
money is gonna go today.

I would say, let's get
the tuna just in case.

I would say give us...

-I'm out on the tuna.

I know you're not,

-but I gotta think of them.

giving you opinion.

an army marches
on its stomach.

Make sure you have the right
mix of protein, vegetables
and starches.

Our cart was filled
to the tippy, tippy top

with a whole bunch of veggies,
but not a lot of protein,
no fish, no meat.

It's important to be mindful
and sensitive towards
people's diets.

But I think it would
be dangerous to favor one diet
over the others.

Right away, I'm looking
for diving equipment
and a spear gun.

Because we all can
survive off fish and rice.

Luckily for me, I spend
a lot of time on boats
as a spear fishing guide.

I typically like
to be in control.

I'm an extremely
calculated person.

Everything I do in life
is three, four, five
moves ahead.

I am frustrated
with cancel culture.

You're not allowed to have
a conversation with
people anymore

about what you
actually think,

because if you disagree with
them it's automatically
you're being cancelled.

For the first time in my life,
in this social experiment,

I really have to let go
of control.

I'm going to release
the reins and I'm going
to go with the flow.

And that's gonna be
a huge challenge.

We need the fishing rods

I am a mom. Yes,
I may be a Karen,

but I have my beliefs
and if you don't like it,
that's not my problem.

I'm going into this
social experiment,

because I have goals in life,
I like nice things,

and so my goal
is the money. [laughs]

and I love to work

I'm very competitive.

Coming into this experiment,
this is all about

It takes money to do
some things. And I'm trying
to do some things.

But, my skills can definitely
be an asset to this team.

And I want people to see
that I'm of value.

Not only to this experience,
but them personally.

I really wanna dig in.
I wanna connect emotionally.

There may be money

this adventure,

but I just don't care.
That's not why I'm here.

I was born poor,

I'll die poor and
that's okay with me.

I'm a challenge
the system type guy.

I think rules are suggestions.
We need to be able to question

our politicians,
question our
religious leaders,

because the system that
we live in is corrupt.

I fully expect people
to be here that probably
piss me off.

But that's okay, I'm super
excited to see what this
adventure holds.

And everyone was like,
they didn't want to hand

To be a Muslim in America
is very challenging.

When people see
the way that I look,

it's always
that intimidation.

But I am a content creator
on social media,

mother of five kids,
and I'm also a personal chef.

I love to cook,

I love to bring
people together,

I like when
everybody around me is happy

and having a good time.

So, hopefully, through
this social experiment,

I'll be able to
show America and the world,

Muslims can get along
with everybody.

It's really exciting
to be here.

I've always strived
for really big things,

and I've always done
really big things.

I've been able to lift

three-and-a-half times
my body weight
as a power lifter.

I have two degrees.

In biomedical engineering
and mechanics,
and mathematics.

I've overcome
so many obstacles in my life.

Had some family problems
growing up,

I had my own problems,
but going through all that,
nothing really fazes me.

So, I think I'm perfect
for this social experiment

because I'm very good
at finding ways to survive.

I'm here to prove
that I can be the best.

But also, the money
would be great,

and I'll do anything to win.

We're taking the produce out
because there's onions,

but when you have
a bullish leader,

they don't really
take any advice.
