Trying to

kind of keep a lid on it trying to hold

yourself back because
you want to perform well

you are willing to do whatever it takes

to make this the best show that

anybody's ever seen

they're one of the biggest metal bands

on the planet

they've been through hal and back

but not all of them have survived

it's been a chaotic journey but a

life-changing one

this is iowa the Slipknot story

with a population of around 220 000 people

des moines is the capital city of the

state of iowa in the us

this is the birthplace of Slipknot

albeit an unusual one

des moines isn't exactly known for being

a heavy metal mecca

so how did one of the most successful

bands on the planet evolve here

whilst part of the Slipknot story

follows that of almost

any other band young frustrated musicians

Trying to find an outlet for their anger

in what they consider to be a desolate town

The formation of Slipknot
is a much darker tale

There was no real protection from a lot

of the things that we were being exposed

to the Slipknot story involves a great

deal of personal pain for most of the band

Pain that is still felt to this day

very important that everybody

understands

that paul gray was the essence

of the band Slipknot

although the band was
officially founded by sean cran

Joey jordison and paul gray in 1995

it was sean crane aka
clown that was the initial

Catalyst for the vision of Slipknot

sean crane was working as a welder in

his hometown of des moines iowa

and two key events in his life led him

To form Slipknot firstly
whilst working as a

wilder he would regularly fall asleep

at the wheel of his car exhausted from

having to wake up at 4 30 in the morning

just to go to his job something he

obviously wasn't keen

on doing secondly

his wife had to break the news to him of

an unexpected passing in the family that

hit sean hard

these two events were
eventually the realization

That sean needed to
realize life was too short

And he decided that he wanted to form

not just slit knot but the biggest

band on the planet

initially sean cran and
paul gray would form a band

Called the pale ones with a singer named

anders kolcevny on vocals

and donnie steele on guitar shortly

after forming

gray invited a local thrash drummer by

the name of joey jordison to one of

their rehearsals

as cran and grey wanted to experiment

With other drum and
percussion elements we do it

for ourselves and we do it for the kids

we don't do it for anybody

else cran gray and jordison would soon

meet other local des moines musicians

who would eventually become the first

full inception of Slipknot

it becomes a way for you to kind of bond

but then it develops into something a

lot more destructive

although now an integral part of

Slipknot corey taylor wasn't in the

original lineup when the band first

started to play shows under the name

Slipknot taylor was

however at the very first Slipknot show

in des moines at a venue

called the safari club he was so blown

away by the band he
told himself that one day

He would become their singer I was

actually at the first

Slipknot show at what
was called the Safari Club

And I remember saying to myself I'm

going to be the singer in this band

before the official formation of

Slipknot cole 70

grey and cran would also discuss band

names whilst rehearsing

they wrote one song called Slipknot

which would later become
the official name for the band

That would eventually be fronted by

corey taylor if you don't like it

gray cran and jordason would often get

together at a local gas
station where jordison

Worked night shifts to discuss the

band's direction

and intricately plan the future of Slipknot

It was during one of these planning

sessions in 1995

that jordison suggested
calling the band Slipknot

After the song of the same
title they had previously

Written 1995 would also see Slipknot

enter the studio to record their first

demo tape without a record deal though

the band had to self-finance the

recording which cost them around 40

000 and it didn't exactly have the

impact they were hoping for

the record which is seen by most as a

demo rather than an official album

was limited to just a thousand copies

and although it received some local

airplay their goal of being the biggest

band in the world

was still a distant dream

it's on the arm you look at it you

figure it out maybe you have your own

number maybe it's in your head somewhere

and maybe you'll display it on your

sleeve someday

if you know what's going on you know it

was during this time that Slipknot

started to conceptualize the idea of

wearing masks and a uniform

boiler suit displaying a barcode as well

as a personal

number for each member of the band we

wanted a more unified look

and we wanted to come out and really

be a force to be reckoned with

everybody fell into a number everybody

has their reasons

Slipknot say the idea behind this was to

represent something bigger than themselves

So that people focused on the music and

the Slipknot message

and this meticulous planning was all

part of sean cran's vision for the band

craziest people live in des moines iowa

and not a lot of people know that but

they're going to now after Slipknot's demo

"Mate Feed Kill Repeat"
failed to land them a record deal

They decided to enter the studio again

to record their first

full-length studio album in the hope of

landing a recording contract

everything from metallica to slayer to

ministry like the hardcore ministry

sound you know like I loved that stuff

Slipknot basically just kind of took

everything and shredded it up and made

it what they wanted

it was at this time that corey taylor

would enter the picture as Slipknot

wanted to introduce

more melodic vocals to their sound

taylor was already the singer of another

band from des moines called

Stone Sour

cole stephanie would take a step back

from the front of the stage and become

another percussionist

but would quit the band shortly after

this lineup change leaving taylor to

become the front man of Slipknot

you've had your whole life to be

what you finally have dreamt of the next

couple of years would welcome several

other lineup changes to the band

as well as their first big break
a 500 000 recording contract

with prestigious metal label

Road runner records initially founded in

the netherlands in 1980

road runner records quickly became a

globally recognized metal label

and has released albums by artists such

as Machine Head

Soulfly

open

and even Stone Sour

this was the opportunity Slipknot had

been waiting for and it would open up a

whole new world for them

however it would be a world that nearly

destroyed them after just

one album we had had

serious conversations about breaking up

after the first album

I mean none of us knew that would it

would ever have

any sort of significance Slipknot's live

shows during the late 90s

very much represented the mental state

of its members

chaotic violent and self-destructive

their debut record entitled Slipknot was

also very nearly

their last Slipknot were following such

a destructive path that they even

questioned the very nature of their future

And if it should continue they soon

realized that not only did they need

Slipknot to continue

but their fans needed them even more

Slipknot had started to fill a void that

had been missing in so many people's lives

They were the outcasts they were the

misunderstood they

were the disaffected this strong

emotional bond that fans had started to

form with Slipknot ran

so deep that some fans took their

devotion to disturbing levels

I just heard three guys they kind of car

With a knife their backs
the words people equal

[ __ ] what do you think about that

Slipknot fans would come
to be known as maggots

A phrase coined by sean crane after he

watched a deer being eaten by maggots

he said their motion followed that of a

mosh pit and

fans feed off Slipknot the way maggots

feed on a day

Slipknot had started out as a

controversial band from the beginning

and this controversy would follow them

throughout their entire career

on june the 29th 1999 Slipknot would

release their debut

studio album via roadrunner records it

would land them

top 100 chart positions in 10 countries

and this was just the beginning

this is our catharsis this is our

therapy for us you know

this is our expression this is our arts

our life

in the same year Slipknot would embark

on their first major tour after landing

a slot on ozfest

ozfest would see the band play over 25

dates across america

with the likes of bands such as

Black Sabbath

Slayer

but their debut album started selling so

many copies that it would eventually

be certified platinum something that was

unthinkable for a band
like Slipknot at the time

We're around because we speak the truth

if we speak the truth it must be with

what's going on around us today

this is the greatest band ever although

Slipknot's ambition was to become the

biggest band on the planet they also

hated the industry

they were becoming a part of

my art's [ __ ] more than money I'm

sick of this [ __ ] business

I'm sick of all this [ __ ] that comes

with it can all

[ __ ] off clown especially was often very

outspoken about his
hatred for the music industry

This was also the reason Slipknot

displayed barcodes on their boiler suits

they wanted to mock the very industry

that would help them become

global superstars basically it's here

today gone tomorrow

it's our kind of mockery towards that

whole thing the barcodes represented the

idea that music was simply just a

product that people could discard as

soon as the next popular trend or band

came along Slipknot wanted to mock the

idea of becoming a product

let's let the music speak for itself and

let's let people see
what the music does to us

Inside ironically although
Slipknot wanted to

wear masks in order for their fans to

focus on the music

the masks became a unique selling point

for the band

these masks turned each member into

their own alter egos

sometimes monstrous ones
and these masks often became

More famous than the music

Slipknot's masks allowed them to become

the people they felt they were

deep inside they could let all of their

demons out on stage whilst wearing them

the situation I was in
when I was a kid was difficult

Dealing with abuse neglect

corey taylor had started to fight demons

from a very early age after being abused

by a neighbor during his childhood

he would turn to music and substance

abuse for escape

his own self therapy by the time corey

was 13 he started smoking
weed which then led him

To using harder substances the excesses

you know

because that they start to pile up

really quick by the time he was 15 he

had already overdosed

twice however this wasn't the end of his

traumatic teenage years

between the ages of 15 to 18 corey had

lost the will to write music

and had started to give up on life so

much so that he tried to end it all but

luckily received

life-saving medical treatment I

swallowed a bunch of pills

and my ex-girlfriend's mother

came to check on me found
me took me to the hospital

Although corey had started to find

comfort in music and his newfound

bandmates in Slipknot

his demons would continue to haunt him

in the years to come

and the outside explains the inside

mask one barely see the eyes barely hear me

Sean cran aka clown had his own personal

demons that he tried to understand

by becoming them on and off stage these

demons were often expressed through the

use of his clown masks

that clown will kill you I don't want to

talk to you I don't want you around

I have nothing to say this is how the

world feels I'm part of the world

deal with it Slipknot would change their

masks to represent each

chapter of the band and each member of

the band had their own

reasoning behind each design clown's

masks very much represented how he felt

Deep inside clown would use these masks to

try and come to terms
with aspects of himself

And the outside world at times he would

often become

terrifying to be around you keep backing

up from me

you scared me I didn't know what to say

can't see [ __ ]

can't breathe can't feel can't do anything

Very painful that was a personal pain

Slipknot's debut record
was impressive however

Their second album iowa released in 2001

would see the bandland a number three

billboard chart position in the us

and the number one album in the uk an

incredible achievement for nine

psychotic looking metalheads from a

small town in iowa

my plague a single taken from the iowa

album would also

appear on the soundtrack of a huge cult

of film resident evil

based on the popular gaming series

released by capcom

the remix of my plague for this

soundtrack was called

the new abuse mix and was produced by

world-renowned producer

terry date date has worked with bands

such as soundgarden

Pantera

and Deftones

as well as working on
other Slipknot records

The Resident Evil soundtrack also

featured songs from Rammstein

Cold Chamber

and Marilyn Manson

although iowa would launch Slipknot onto

a path of global stardom rumors started

to spread that the band
were at breaking point

However that didn't stop them from going

all out on stage and

risking everything there isn't one day I

don't think that I could be

seriously maimed killed or
hurt someone else in the band

Some members saying the band wouldn't

record another album

and other members saying that they had

already started work on

album number three either way it seemed

like conflict had already

started to develop in the Slipknot camp

during the recording of iowa the band

was still full of pain

so much so that corey taylor even

inflicted pain on his

own body during vocal sessions in order

to deliver the best

possible performance he could

at one point he even threw up on himself

sid had an emotional breakdown due to

his grandfather passing away

joey's hands would be covered in blood

and wrapped in tape

and the rest of the band were either

dealing with depression
or substance addiction

Or both iowa was said to be one of

Slipknot's most darkest

albums they had ever recorded

we were so hungry and so ready to work

that we just kind of ducked our heads

and plowed through it and really built

the foundation for what would come later

after a hugely successful world tour

ending in 2002

promoting the iowa album Slipknot went

on Hiatus

and focused on other projects

corey taylor and jim root decided to

revive Stone Sour

clown formed his own side project called

to my surprise

and joey jordason went on to form the

murder dolls with wednesday 13.

Although the future of Slipknot seemed

uncertain they were far from finished

going against every philosophy

that people thought they knew about the

music industry in 2003

Slipknot would come together once again

and moved into what is known as the mansion

A property formerly owned by rick rubin

in los angeles who has worked with red

hot chili peppers

audio slave and run dmc to name a few

this is where Slipknot would record

their third album

volume 3 the subliminal verses

despite rick rubin's reputation of being

one of the greatest

producers in rock history corey taylor

hated him

showed up for 45 minutes

taylor said that ruben would show up for

just 45 minutes a week and then leave

taylor accused rubin of being overpaid

And overrated and corey vowed to never

however there was something far more

sinister going on in the mansion

taylor is well known for being

fascinated by the paranormal

and on several occasions he's talked

about events he's experienced

since the age of 10 years old and yet

I've had these experiences you know

trying to trying to figure it out has

been fairly infuriating and none of the

answers that were available were

satisfactory to me

he even wrote an entire book on the

subject trying to find

scientific proof of spirits and

documenting his

own close encounters as well as

exploring religion

although taylor is a self-confessed atheist

Corey claimed that the six months he

spent in the mansion

recording the third Slipknot album was

plagued by ghosts and supernatural

activity so much so that taylor refuses

to talk about it

corey has also been a
huge fan of horror films

Something that often
translates into his lyrics

Some of corey's biggest influences when

it comes to his lyrics and general

creative curiosity

is stephen king politically corey takes

a great deal of inspiration from hunter

s thompson an american journalist that

was famously popularized by the film

fear and loathing in las vegas yeah

despite the mansion being haunted by

ghosts and what appeared to be a severe

lack of presence from their producer

rick rubin throughout the recording

process volume

3 subliminal verses was seen by the band

as Slipknot's rebirth album

despite the success of their last album

Slipknot's world was about to come

crashing down around them

all hope would be gone on may the 24th

2010 founding member of the band paul

gray would be found dead in a hotel room

in Iowa

on the day after his death Slipknot held

a heartbreaking press conference to

officially announce the news

and give a statement to fans corey could

hardly hold himself together

yesterday

yesterday we lost our brother Slipknot

were devastated

they had lost their brother and their

future hung in the balance

corey even said there was a chance he

might never be able to record with

Slipknot again without

paul they were like family it's

everything you know I mean without

Slipknotted

I'd be probably sleeping on someone's

couch working at the
old bar I used to work at

That paul gray was the essence

of the band slipped on

the only way I can sum up paul gray is

love

I you know I never knew what being a

rock star would be like I I don't

I don't really consider myself a rock

star but the members of Slipknot had a

truly difficult decision ahead of them

they either had to walk on
stage without their brother

Knowing they would never play together

again or

they ended it all there and then somehow

they found the strength to keep

going

Slipknot would however continue and on

october the 19th

2014 they would release their fifth

studio album

five the grey chapter
dedicated to their late brother

Paul gray Slipknot also decided to fire

their drummer joey jordason

also a founding member of the band there

then ensued a legal battle between Slipknot

And percussionist chris fenn which

ultimately saw fenn

also leaving the band it seemed that the

further Slipknot ventured

into their career the darker and more

chaotic it became

since the release of all hope is gone in

2008

along with paul's passing Slipknot

seemed to be falling apart in

every direction the only
consistency was their music

On october the 31st
2018 Slipknot would return

Seemingly reborn with one of the biggest

singles of their career

All Out Life

this then led to one of the most highly

anticipated albums of
Slipknot's career and 2019.

On august 9 2019

Slipknot would go on to release arguably

their most successful album to date

we are not your kind

we are not your kind with top music

charts across the globe and Slipknot

would embark on one of
their biggest production tours

We are not your kind helped to seal

Slipknot's reputation as one of the four

most contemporary
metal artists of this century

The only thing Slipknot started with

back in 1995

was a dream passion and
the hunger for world domination

And now they're one of the biggest metal

bands on the face of the earth.
