of sand sculpting teams

Are carving their way
through four qualifying heats.

-We are perfect. Perfect.
-Don't be intimidated.

Group two made
their beach debut.

We're all original
thinkers over here.

[benjamin] everybody copy.

-[jp] it's bad news, eh?
-[calixto] I see one more.

[narrator] thomas and anique
scored the first win.

I look very sweet,
but there's a layer underneath.

[narrator]
now five teams remain

As group two take on
their second heat.

-Full steam ahead.
-We can't afford any mistakes.

[narrator] and this next
challenge ain't no fairy tale.

[anique]
it's this mythical creature.

-But it will devour you.
-Just like us.

[narrator]
because the reality is,

Only one team will win

The grand prize of $10,000.

-[anique] oh, we got a crack.
-[jp] oh.

If it collapses,
we understand nothing

About sand sculpting.

to the semi-final to face off

Against the top two teams
from the first group.

Are you ready

How you use just sand
and water

To create such spectacular
sculptures is magical,

Fantastical,
almost supernatural.

So, for today's challenge,

Dive deep into the world
of make-believe

And create a character
from another realm.

-Okay.
-Bring fantasy to reality.

[thomas] huh.

Let the sand fly.

[sculptors cheering]

-[dmitry] yoo-hoo!
-[bob] water, water, please!

We're tapping into
our 20 years of experience

In managing time,
looking at the tide,

Always looking at the tide.

Last challenge
thomas and anique won.

Today we're going to go
and do awesome.

[dmitry] I'm the happiest guy
on the beach.

The only one strategy, win.

The challenge is making
some magical supernatural being.

So we're making a kelpie.

It's from scottish folklore.

It's like a water spirit,
disguises itself

As a beautiful horse
and it tries to lure people

Into the water
and just devours them.

A scottish kelpie
is just like the tide here.

The tide looks really beautiful,
but it comes in fast

And it will take down
your sculpture.

[thomas] last challenge
we had a nice win.

I think today we're gonna have
a good win as well.

We know what the sand can do.

It would be nice
to win again.

We're using thomas and anique
for inspiration

To make it to the final
winners line, in front.

The fantastical creature

That we're bringing
to life today

Is a deep sea mer-creature
who has no eyes.

Gonna have the long,
creepy fingernails

Dragging through
the ocean floor

With a swish
of the mer-creature's tail.

Mystical, supernatural.
I know about these things.

They do call him
magic jim.

Yeah. Got a magic shop.

[anna] when we got
this challenge I knew

Dad would be right for it.

-Ooh!
-Telepathic.

We're going to manage our time
a little bit better

Because we know now
the veracity of the tide.

[narrator]
to impress the judges

The teams must meet
today's criteria.

Movement, consistency
of carving, and texture.

Karen and rusty,
we're back to a second group

Of sand sculpting teams
in their second qualifying heat.

[karen]
this group is down to five,

And only two will make it
to the semifinals.

[maestro] thomas and anique,
they won the first challenge.

How do you think
they're feeling right now?

[karen] they're feeling
pretty confident.

They really set the pace.

Showing the other teams
they are the team to beat.

[karen] sand sculptors are some
of the most competitive people

In the world.

A lot of egos out there.

[karen] the fire is lit.

They better get it together
and quick,

Or they're going home.

Excited about the second one.

Last challenge
we had some cracks,

But every challenge
is a new challenge.

We have to create
something magical.

-Yes.
-Mystical.

We've got the transformation

Of a aztec warrior
into an animal.

[calixto] trying to go
from one dimension to another.

[jp] we bond through
the love of mexican art.

Of course we're
going to be magic--

-The energy.
-We're going to make it happen.

I don't spend
too much time compacting.

I use my experience,

23 years
making professional sand.

And I am fast.

Unbelievable. He's a machine.

[dmitry] fuck.
They are almost finished.

Mamma mia.

I am not worried one bit.

Today I feel excited.

As a child
I would draw creatures

And things I would imagine
living in other worlds.

In this challenge,
I really feel in my element

[dmitry] the character
we're making, we call him dude.

Fantastic creature.

[david] a combination
of multiple animals.

[dmitry] something
representing the nature,

Some parts of mammals, birds,
their tails combined.

According to the judges,
what the judges are looking for.

[dmitry] we have
pretty good chances to win.

-Good to go till the final.
-[dmitry] uh-huh!

Talk to me about today's theme.

Today,
they have to bring a character

From another realm to life.

[karen] david and dmitry,
this will be up their alley.

Dmitry, I think that guy
lives in another realm.

With the diversity of background
of artists we have,

Bob's from africa,
his idea of fantasy

Might be based in folklore.

[karen] benjamin
is a surreal specialist.

The two of them might come up
with something incredible.

What do you think
the teams will need to do

-To stand out today?
-[karen] movement.

We want this sculpture

To pop out of the sand,
come at you.

[rusty]
consistency of carving.

Detail on the top,
I want to see that

Carried through
all the way to the bottom.

And bring it all together
with a bunch of textures.

Today there's an amazing scene
and we have a very good idea.

We make the flying bird.

[bob] a small girl
sitting in the swing

Following
the movement of the bird.

It's like fantasy,
like magical.

Yeah, we bring magic
to our sculpture every day.

Bob and benjamin,

How did you get
into sand sculpting?

Wow. When I am younger,
living close to the beach.

I make my piece every day
and the tourist put tips.

When you were younger,
that's how you made money?

Yes, yes, yes, yes.

Bob. Brother to brother.

There are not too many
african sculptors,

Are there,
dealing with sand?

There are a lot
of africans in sand,

But I've never met
a professional one yet.

-You're one of a kind?
-If you say so.

[all laugh]

I've seen
a lot of sand sculpting

In the last little while.

One thing I learned,
communication is key.

If you don't
have a communication,

Uh-uh, it's not working.

[narrator] two hours in
and the fastest team

On the beach is already pulling
their bottom forms.

I like the excitement

Because I want to put pressure
on the others.

[suspenseful music playing]

[jp] we're the first team
to take off the forms.

We have
more time to carve.

-To show our best work.
-Yes.

Cracks. Oh, calixto.

[calixto]
yes, I know, I know.

-Oh, it's coming.
-[jp] oh, shit.

-[calixto] no!
-[jp] oh, my god.

[dmitry] oh.

of the competition.

is in full recovery mode.

And will be more beautiful
than all the rest.

We're back with our first group
of sand sculptors.

And there's only
five teams left.

[rusty] although this is
only the second challenge,

You can really
feel the intensity.

[karen]
and what a fun challenge today.

We're dealing
with fantasy and make believe.

[rusty] we really get to see
into the imagination

Of these incredible artists.

And these teams
are not messing around.

They're getting through
the pound ups quicker than ever.

As we know, one of the problems
with rushing the pound up,

It's really easy
to make a mistake.

Jp and calixto,
prime example.

First ones done
with their pound up,

But the whole thing collapsed.

Everyone's in a big hurry,
get carving,

And really prove themselves.

I'm doing a cut-through,

And I'm using the water
like a laser

To find exactly
where the hole is.

Time is short.

We have to get
these components in.

May not be
the biggest cut through.

Do you reckon
we could make it any bigger?

No.
Got to respect the sand.

A pretty humble cut-through,

But it's a cut-through
nonetheless.

It'll take an act of god

For that cut-through
to fall down. [laughs]

I am carving
the manes of the horse.

It's this mythical
water creature,

Disguises
as a beautiful horse.

But it will drag you down
and it will devour you.

It's not just regular manes.
It's a little bit like seaweed.

They flow in a certain direction
to create movement.

Movement
is one of the criteria,

But we're not taking it as far
as our colleagues right there.

-David and dmitry.
-[both] hi, karen.

Did you learn
anything from challenge one?

This sand, much more water.
It's better.

The sand is talking to you
and telling you what--

-Exactamente. Yeah.
-And what are you making?

A magical creature
that we're just inventing.

I can already see
a lot of movement.

I see wings.
I see this funky looking body.

Thomas and anique
won the first heat.

-Are you feeling any pressure?
-[dmitry] oh, yeah.

Everybody's
a pretty high calibre.

You guys know
what you're capable of.

-[dmitry] yep.
-[karen] yeah, yeah? [laughing]

[dmitry] yeah.

[siren blares]

-Attention, sculptors.
-[jp] oh, my god.

-[david] no.
-The tide is low.

Which means
she's rolling back, baby!

[jim & anna] oh, no!

You better put the pedal
to the metal.

Pedal to the metal, thomas.

This is
your yellow flag warning.

[dmitry] rush, rush, rush.

-[jp] already, eh, yellow flag.
-[calixto] we need to do fast!

We're running out of time
all the time.

We have to make it happen
one piece at a time

And we'll get it ready.

Fantasy, this is, uh,
one of my comfort zones.

There's a lot of
imaginary allowance.

[jim] when I think of fantasy,
I think of becoming more open.

Everything is possible.

[anique]
when I was a little kid,

My fantasy would sometimes
take me to dark places.

I know if I'm swimming
in the lake next to my house,

There's no alligators there.

But I'm always wondering
what's lurking underneath me.

[bob] magic is how to bring out
from nature

What we don't see
with our eyes.

[benjamin] therefore,
you have many magical things.

But, this a large,
delicate, like woman.

Jim and anna.
The father and daughter team.

What's it like
working with your dad?

-Awesome.
-It's great working with dad.

We can be brutally honest.

We've known each other
quite a long time.

We come up with these
airy ideas all the time

And we throw them
at each other.

It's like we're seeing
in the same plane quite often.

Today's theme,
you know, magical fantasy.

-What do you think about that?
-Man, I love magical.

I love fantasifull.

Uh, I have a shop
called "just magic."

-Wow.
-All that stuff in there,

Those things
that stretch you

Out of your normal
cup of coffee.

With that beard of yours,
you look like a wizard, man.

It's an important
responsibility

To have the only
magic shop in town.

We are opening last level.

-[wood creaks]
-[bob] is that opening?

-[benjamin] easy now. Easy.
-[bob] easy, easy.

Taking off the bottom form
can always be a surprise.

That's why
it's so much fun.

[bob] thank you.

It stayed. No collapse.

[dmitry] slowly.

For me, if it collapses,

We understand nothing
about sand sculpting.

[anique]
it's always nerve-racking,

Taking the bottom form off.

We're a little bit worried.

[thomas] our neighbors
had a collapse.

Here we go. Slow down.

[anique] slow down,
slow down, slow down.

We've got a crack here.
We have a crack.

So, now we have
to deal with it.

Okay, shovel, shovel,
shovel, shovel, shovel.

[thomas] shovel a big base.

[anique] the crack
is enemy number one because--

-It could collapse.
-[anique] yeah, yeah.

We could go home.

We have a crack.

We have to counterbalance

And we add in
a lot of extra sand.

Whilst trying to keep
our sculpture up

Is eating up precious time.

Every minute
we're shoveling,

We're not making
beautiful details.

Keep it coming on my feet.

-Yeah.
-[maestro] you had a collapse.

We have some little problems,

But nothing we cannot fix.

What I noticed is, like,
you got a real tight bond.

How long y'all
known each other?

-[calixto] about 21 years.
-21 years.

Since, we're, like, brother.

Hey, the thing
is easy between us.

Same love
of the beach and sand.

When I found the sand
and the beach many years ago,

I think I get married
with the sand.

[maestro laughs]
so, you got sand in your heart?

-Yes.
-[maestro] oh, man.

You guys are really showing

A beautiful connection
right now with this piece, man.

This is the magic of the sand.

Working on the textures.

[david] that six hours
goes by really fast,

So you can't put
textures everywhere.

So, you got to really nail
the right place to do it.

I'm working on the feathers.
Creates volume on the head.

It's the kind of details

That you would like
to spend time.

But, tide... Wow.

Make it-- yeah,
little bit more complicated.

Let's be honest, these teams
don't have that much time left.

It's under an hour.

[rusty] jp and calixto
had a collapse early on.

[karen] there's a lot of
rough surface area remaining,

And consistency of carving
is one of the criteria.

I'm a little worried
right now.

Thomas and anique have a crack
running right through.

[rusty] to counter that,

They added a lot more sand
to the base.

Problem is,
now the base is huge

And they have to
finish that in time.

Jim and anna,
I'm not really sure

What's going on there.

I don't see a focal point
on that creature yet.

We're not quite
where we need to be.

We're running out of time
doing the head.

It's an important element,

So we're going to have to
really crank it.

And I think,
"hey, wouldn't it be cool

If I just poked my straw
into the eye here,

To try
and add some texture?

Oh, no!
The face just falls off.

Dad,
I've had a collapse.

It's really bad news,

And I'm not sure
if I'm going to be able to...

Bring it up to scratch.

Make a little bit of
the backdrop here.

Bit of support.
And swoop it in.

We lost quite a bit of time
having to deal with this crack.

We need to keep
the consistency,

But it can't take
too much time.

Trying to get it all done
as fast as I can.

-[siren blares]
-[maestro] oh, sculptors!

I hate to be
the bearer of bad news,

But this
is your red flag warning.

-[anna] no, no, no, no, no.
-[jp] oh, my god.

You have ten minutes
before the tide hits the mark.

[anique] ten minutes,
ten minutes, ten minutes to go.

-[bob] we go quickly.

[david] if there's a time
to panic, it is now.

We did it!
A little bit messy.

I'm certainly happy
with what we pulled off.

I feel very confident

I tell you what,
this is the toughest,

Craziest sculpting competition
we've ever been in.

[narrator]
to make it to the next round,

The teams
must impress the judges.

They'll be looking for movement,

Consistency of carving,
and texture.

First up,
david and dmitry.

[karen] you can just see
the attitude

Coming off of this guy.

He's got a big belly.

Looks like he ate well.

[rusty] the pose,
he's sitting back,

He's totally comfortable.

That shifting body weight.

And the slight turn
on the head

And then the tail coming down,
so, there's actually

A little more movement
than you think

In this sculpture.

You can tell
that he's got a hairy arm,

But there's not fur
everywhere,

There's just a little bit here
and a little bit here.

And that's a brilliant example
of how to use texture.

[rusty] consistency of carving
is top-notch.

This character
really transports us

Inside the mind
of david and dmitry.

-It's a very interesting place.
-[all laugh]

Jp and calixto.

[karen]
this is an aztec warrior

Transforming into an animal.

[maestro] the expression
on the warrior's face

Makes it seem like
the transformation

Was kind of painful.

[rusty] I like that
it's not just

A traditional jaguar pattern,

But a little bit
more stylistic.

The rings in the center
add a lot of movement,

But I would like to see
a little bit sharper texture,

And a little bit
more precision.

[karen] you can tell
they were in a hurry.

They need
to take it up a notch.

[maestro]
we got jim and anna.

The sweetest
father and daughter team.

But this--
this is terrifying.

[rusty]
this is a fantastical creature

From another realm.

[karen]
and look at that claw

Ripping up the beach.

It doesn't even have eyes.

[rusty]
I was looking for a face.

It has a face,
but I don't recognize it.

The flow of the hair,
let's call it,

Gives the piece
a lot of movement.

[karen] there's a few
little rough spots,

But all the texture,
it's amazing.

It's a very
imaginative piece,

And it's engaging,
draws me right in.

[maestro] okay, so here
we have thomas and anique.

[rusty] again, showing us

Why they are two of the best
in the world.

What a beautiful sculpture.
It's gorgeous.

A lot of movement
in this piece.

The texture that they created
draws your eyes

And it slithers as it moves.

[rusty]
these guys are solid pros.

It shows.
It really shows.

[karen] thomas and anique
had a crack,

They felt the need to pile
a lot of sand around the base

Just to make sure that that
crack didn't get any bigger.

But I'm not really sure
if it adds to the sculpture

Or if they should have just
raked it flat.

[maestro] and finally,
bob and benjamin.

[karen]
a beautiful sculpture.

The little girl
is dreaming of flying,

So she's in the swing.

[rusty] nice movement
with the hair flowing.

The old man face
on the back.

[karen] I don't see
any connection going on here.

It's a little bit disjointed.

I'm not really sure
this is a fantastical character.

[rusty] I really want to see
their imagination.

You judges are tough this year,
oh, my goodness.

These guys are so good.

That's why the smallest details
are so important.

to create a character

From another realm.

You all drew us
into a world of fantasy.

And one of you
made us a true believer.

Today's sand champs are...

David and dmitry.

[all cheering and applauding]

[dmitry] I think
we just make the best piece.

-It's possible.
-In my humble opinion.

I'm very proud of dmitry.

I'm very proud of david.

Our goal
is the win at the end.

[rusty] david and dmitry
did a fantastic piece.

We asked for a character
from another realm,

And boy, did they deliver.

[karen] you could feel
how full and pleased

And relaxed and chill
that guy was.

That's a good sculpture.

[rusty]
david and dmitry exemplified

Consistency of carving.

The feather
on the top of the head

Was carved
with just as much detail

As the feather
at the bottom of the tail.

The rivalry
between thomas and anique

And david and dmitry
has been set.

And they've set
that bar high.

But unfortunately
for one of you...

The tide has turned.

[dramatic music playing]

Jp and calixto.

-Aww.
-Oh, no.

Please pack your tools,
and leave the beach.

[jp] see you.

it's a tough competition.

Six hours, and sometimes we win,
sometimes we lose.

-That's it. That's life, eh?

We learned never
to underestimate
