will make it to the semifinal.

Looks like a big coffin.

Something they're gonna
bury themself in.

These mind-blowing sculptures
can take days to create.

But here,
they have just six hours.

The first six pairs showed off
their signature style.

We like to put feelings in our
work, like, "boom-boom-boom."

We've worked together
for, like, 25 years,

north american championships.

other when something looks off.

of cultural design.

It's about our backgrounds
working together.

I think it will be easier

I've known him
my whole life.

I came out of the womb

And he was kinda
just standing there.

We've been sand sculpting
together for 20 years.

Dad was my mentor.

[jim] we've got to be able
to talk to the sand

One grain at a time.

[anna] we know
how to communicate,

And we know
each other's triggers

And we're gonna use
all of that to our advantage.

Six spectacular sand sculpting
teams stand before me.

And this time,

We're gonna make it
tougher than ever.

The six of you
will battle it out

-Through four qualifying heats.
-Oh, boy.

Of going home are much higher.

Only the top two teams will
make it to the semifinal,

Where they'll meet the top
two teams from the first group.

-Whoa.
-[maestro] that's right.

There's another six teams
coming for you!

-[sculptors chuckling]
-so let's get to it, then.

You've all competed worldwide,
achieving legendary status.

So, for the first challenge,
you must showcase

-Your claim to fame.
-[sculptor] ooh!

You gotta make it count, because
at the end of the challenge,

One team will be
leaving the beach.

So let the race begin!

[cheering]

-Go get the top.
-[anique] yep.

[jim] hup.

[intense music playing]

Whoo!
The secret to a good pound-up

Is that it has to be
very splashy.

[jim] there's only
six teams out there.

-No room for any error.
-It's gonna be cutthroat.

God said, "jim, today,
no collapses for you."

[thomas] if I don't
compact this right,

We've got a problem.

Our biggest competition
is david and dmitry.

[thomas] david is like a
canadian government experiment.

And dmitry, he's awesome.

We'll just have to beat them.

[thomas]
more water, please.

[dmitry]
what's our sculpture gonna be?

Wow, it's very serious

-Philosophical concept.
-Yes. [laughs]

We're known for
sculpting figures,

So we're gonna make the woman,

Which for us
represent love and life,

And then death at the back.

Good anatomy, good flow.

[dmitry] first of all,
we are artists.

Always learning, studying.

[david] we have a good bag
of techniques and tricks.

-We love competing.
-That's why we're here.

[david]
as a team, we've won a lot.

In my experience,
to win is good.

[david] yoo-hoo!

I've worked with
similar sand before.

The claim of fame will be
our journey of sand sculpting.

One piece for two people.

I like the surrealistic ideas.

I make a woman
who has a split face.

-From bob...
-[bob] some african face.

We put them together.

Complicated.
But no problem.

[maestro]
to win today's heat,

The teams must meet
the judging criteria:

Clarity of concept,
originality,

And "wow" factor.

Karen and rusty,
we're back on the beach!

With six new teams
in the tournament.

-Here we go.
-Seems a lot tougher this year.

[karen] it sure is.

We started with 12 teams,

And we broke them up
into two groups of six.

[rusty] this is our second
group going head-to-head.

[maestro] who do we have
in this group of six?

[karen] we have
some amazing teams.

David and dmitry,
fine art specialists,

Creating just the most intricate
photo-realistic details.

[rusty] bob and benjamin.
Both of these guys

Started out their career
on the beach.

This might work
to their advantage.

Thomas and anique,
precision and technical masters.

Jp and calixto are here.

These two have been
working together for years.

Very good with speed.

So happy to be with
my favourite partner.

It is my soul brother!

Me and calixto,

We've been working together
for over 20 years.

We really bond through
the love of mexican art.

We won the second place
at the world competition.

But this time,
no second place for us.

No, I want first place.

So today's challenge
is claim to fame,

And we decided
to do a shaman dancer.

It does represent the energy
of the mexican people

And the spiritual,
cultural colour of our team.

My experience is that I don't
need too much compacting.

I feel very good
about the sand.

[anique] lots of compacting.

Ah, we're not worried.

[thomas] the other teams
should be afraid of us.

I look very sweet,
but there's a layer underneath.

[thomas] our claim to fame
is that everything we make

Is very dynamic
and lively and lifelike.

So what we're gonna make?
Rabbits.

Rabbits are fast.
They like to dig.

[anique] we like
movement and playfulness.

We're gonna do it high and wide.

So in that way,
we're already taking a risk.

We are gonna win
this first competition.

Good compacting,
it's a secret.

My tamper.

Uh, 25 pounds.

[rachelle]
we are married for 33 years.

When we play in the sand,

We don't have to talk
because we know.

[mike] I am competitive.
We want to win.

[rachelle]
we love to do the sandcastle.

-It's our claim to fame.
-Claim to fame.

[rachelle] this sandcastle
has a shell and a pearl.

Represents mike and me,
strong like a sandcastle.

I am the pearl.

[mike] time is very tight.

I'm slow mike.
Okay. [laughs]

Today's theme
is claim to fame.

-What are y'all looking for?
-[karen] clarity of concept.

We wanna know exactly
what their claim to fame is.

And I wanna see
some technical risk.

[rusty] originality.

I really wanna see
some cool concepts

With some great compositions.

And "wow" factor.

It makes you stop
in your tracks and say...

-[both] wow.
-Wow.

Our sculpture's
pretty ambitious today.

We wanna bring
the "wow" factor.

We're making a split face.

Half's me, half's anna.

From the inside
rolls out a film,

Which is frame by frame
of a journey

That we get
to come here.

[anna] doing well
in the first challenge,

The other teams
will have their eye on us

And know that we might be
the team to beat.

[dmitry whistles] thank you.

-[grunts]

Dmitry, I heard it's
a very special day for you.

I was born several years ago.

Two hours into the competition,

And some teams are

[anna] I think
having the split face

Made up of two different sides
is quite original.

We got the same concept.
Face splitting open.

-[anna chuckles]

[benjamin] everybody copy.

they stole from us.

[anna] I was thinking
that we'd come up

With this incredibly
original idea,

And then to see
someone else with the same.

We're all original
thinkers over here.

Hopefully the judges see that
our sculpture is done better.

We're coming out for a win.

[maestro] we're at new river
beach in new brunswick,

Where six top
sand sculpting teams

Are facing off in
the first qualifying heat

Of an epic tournament.

[jp] it's about speed.

Extreme pressure
on the sixth hour.

I feel dirty,
but dirty is good.

[maestro] in the end,

Karen, we are back

For a race against the tide

[karen] this group of six are
some of the best in the world,

And each and every one of them
wants to win.

We've asked the teams
to show us their claim to fame.

[rusty]
we're gonna see everything from

Sandcastles to fine art.

[karen] I'm shocked at how big
some of these sculptures are.

[rusty] some of the teams
are working very fast,

And some of 'em slow.

Today's challenge
is a real opportunity

For the teams to showcase
who they are.

It'll be interesting to see
how they express themselves.

When I'm creating, you can
feel the emotion of the artist.

It's not just sand.

[calixto]
I like to work with energy,

Feeling softness,

Because we have something
of this element in our life.

[thomas] we have a drive
to always better ourselves.

Have to make sure
that it's believable.

[dmitry]
we have the chemistry

To work together
and to communicate.

-[dmitry whistles]
-yeah, you can do... [whistles]

-I can do? Or the--
-sure.

You wanna... [whistles]

So you wanna do the graphics?

I wouldn't say a better job, but
you do a quicker job than me.

You have a nice,
interesting shape going on.

It's, like, rabbits
running towards something.

And it's chasing a big carrot.

It's a metaphor.

We just wanna create
a lot of movement.

making it even bigger,

Make it all nice and smooth.

[rusty] and that'll
raise the level?

-[anique] yeah.
-How's it feel?

-At the moment it feels strong.
-Actually, that sounds great.

you have three hours left.

[rachelle] we have to go fast.

It's the beginning
of the sandcastle.

[mike]
we want the lines straight.

It's long to do,
but we want to do perfect.

Six hours is not too long, but--

It's very fast for us.

[rachelle] my biggest worry
is really to finish.

We will see.

Jim, how does it feel to be
carving with your daughter?

I don't think that's something
you can really put into words,

How magical it is.

Today's father's day
in australia.

We both feel
that there's sort of--

Almost like
the winds of the universe

Have just blown us into this.

They're some of
my strongest memories,

Looking up
and seeing dad with you

And all the other
great sculptors

Carving these
ginormous sculptures,

And I just couldn't believe
what was before my eyes.

I see you on one side
and anna on the other, correct?

-[jim] uh, yep, yeah.
-That's right!

I'm glad it reads.

[maestro] as the tide
continues to rush the shore,

The teams face
the dreaded bottom form.

[jp] when you take off
the last form,

You get to know
whether the sculpture might go.

and it feels, uh...

[dmitry]
a bit more stressful.

Yeah. So far so good.

[thomas]

really, really close now.

[anique] is it close, yeah?

[thomas] well done.

We not only went high,

We went wide.

[thomas] but we're up
against some of

The most respected people
in the industry.

[jp] yeah, I think the judges
will see all the difficulty

That we went through
and solved.

[mike]
a good day, a tough day.

He is nervous because he is
really competitive.

But I'm not nervous.

Yeah.

The rest will depend
on the judges.

To win would be
good birthday present.

[maestro]
now it's up to the judges.

They'll be looking for
clarity of concept,

Originality,
and "wow" factor.

First up,
bob and benjamin.

[karen]
this is a gorgeous piece.

Benjamin is known for
his surreal designs,

And bob for his curvy lines.

This is bob and benjamin's
claim to fame.

[rusty] I love the way
this piece is carved, 1000%.

Every surface on there
has been manipulated

And manipulated well.

Bob and benjamin
have spent their entire career

Working in beach sand,

So I would like
a little bit more risk.

'cause if anyone's
gonna make it work,

It'll be these two.

[maestro] david and dmitry.

[karen]
this is a two-sided sculpture.

There's a beautiful woman
on the front,

And there's this creepy skull
on the back.

Exquisitely carved piece.

[rusty]
the level of detail is amazing.

The talent and the pure skill
that these guys have

Is quite obvious.

But I'm a little confused
as to the clarity of concept.

"wow" factor?
Yes, I say "wow."

But what does it all mean?

[maestro] here we have
mike and rachelle,

Our sandcastle specialists.

[karen] you've got
the whimsical castle

And the clamshell opening up
with a pearl in the middle.

This is definitely mike
and rachelle's claim to fame.

[rusty] they have nice symmetry,
a few nice towers.

[karen] the staircase coming
around the side is adorable.

[rusty] they do have
a few issues, though.

As the sculpture
gets bigger at the bottom,

You're running out of time,

You have to go
faster and faster,

Do some looser techniques.

[karen]
it feels a little rough.

[maestro] this is our father
and daughter team, jim and anna.

[karen] you instantly know
what the concept is.

Jim on one side
and anna on the other side.

And their whole life
is a filmstrip

Coming down to the front.

That's a movie
I'd like to watch.

That's an oscar winner!

[rusty] what a beautiful way

To portray memories
of their life.

It could be cleaned up
a little bit tighter.

[karen] looking at the beard,
it's really, really rough

Because they're just
trying to finish.

All in all, good job.

[maestro] we got thomas, anique,
and an upside-down rabbit.

[rusty] this represents them
in this competition

Chasing the carrot:

-The prize.
-Mmm.

[karen]
first of all, it's massive.

It has a huge "wow" factor.

And the rabbit has
lots and lots of movement.

[rusty]
it's technical and precise.

Exactly what
thomas and anique do.

[karen]
I would've liked to have seen

The carrot move a little bit.

[laughs] you wanna see
feet on the carrot?

Maybe!
That would've been cool.

[laughs] but all in all,

A terrific first showing
in this competition.

[maestro] here we have
jp and calixto.

[karen] you can tell that they
really understand mayan design.

There's a lot of detail
going on here.

Beautiful patterns on the sides.

[rusty] it's got
a nice expression in there.

But they had to deal
with a lot of cracks.

Going to plan b,
they ran a little short on time.

It's quite soft,

But you can feel the power
in that foot stepping out.

Maybe it's a ritualistic dance.

Well, that tide's gonna
have him dancing real soon.

It's gonna put
a little pep in his step.

[karen laughs]

in your heat is complete.

Today, you were asked to
show us your claim to fame.

You have all proven why
you are the best of the best.

But one team really
stood out from the rest.

Today's sand champs are...

-[sculptors applauding]

-That's fantastic.

Winning the first challenge,
it feels like a relief.

It gives you
a confidence boost.

[thomas laughing] we're ready.

came out swinging.

They had the biggest,
tallest piece on the beach.

[rusty]
it had a lot of smooth surface,

Which might look
really simple.

I know how hard it is
to actually make something

Consistently straight,
consistently smooth.

And it was round, giving a lot
of movement to the entire piece.

They are coming
for that carrot.

Those other teams
better watch out.

But for one of you...

The tide has turned.
