I've made my reservations,
booked everything.

I even made myself two kilts.

So, we just sort of
embraced being Buchanans.

We're here. We're proud.

We make a noise.

It was my father that told me

that we had a plausible claim,

a reasonable claim,

and incited me, sooner
or later, to make it.

That's my grandfather,
who would have been the chief,

and great-grandfather here.

I told the story to my wife.

She said, "Well, we can't
just do nothing about it."

When researching the clan chiefship,

I read accounts of these early
ceremonies, and that kind of...

I thought, "Oh, gosh, that sounds
fun. I wonder if we can do that."

And then, the more you read, the
more you get caught up with history,

and the more you get excited by
ancestors and what they've done,

and all their achievements,
and they were fighting,

and they were, you know,
giving their life.

And you think, well, you know,

"We can't just do a ceremony
in a church hall, or whatever,

"and just hand over a certificate."
I mean, how boring is that?

Why don't we just go back to
the basics and just kind of

bring it alive, and just
do what they used to do?

I feel that it's
something I ought to do.

I feel that it's family
history that, erm...

..had an untold chapter,
really, that needed to be told.

We employed a genealogist,
Hugh Pescott, who went back

19 generations to find the common
link between the last chief

and myself, and he managed it.

So, I come along with my claim.

It takes a year or two to get the
claim through Lord Lyon's Court.

Lord Lyon made his decision
just over a year ago.

Next year, we're going
to have a ceremony here,

and we're calling it
an inauguration,

which I will be sort of
formally adopted as the clan chief

amongst my fellow clansmen.

So, how do we do this?

Well, it's kind of a bit of
make it up as you go along.

But we're basing it on a lot
of documents from the past

which have shown what did go
on these different events.

We've got the heritage.

It's just a matter of just...
bringing it out and just...

just kind of using it
again and celebrating it.

A lot of British Scottish people
don't get terribly excited about it

but, erm, Americans are
absolutely mad about it.

This is the first time that
standard has flown in 338 years.

So, when we raise it,
it's kind of emotional for us.

My mother told us we were a
Buchanan from the day we were born.

It's incredible that we will
be marching with our chief

here in the United States,
in New Hampshire,

at MY games that I host.

So, I'm just ecstatic about it.

American Buchanans view their
clan very differently

than Scotland Buchanans do.

We are the diaspora.

Some of our members have not
had an ancestor in Scotland

in several hundred years.

So, our connection
to Scotland is more...

..a spiritual kind of thing,
you know?

husband's inauguration next year.

I'm not quite sure which one

Oh, Sir Walter Scott, here we go.

That was his hair when
he was, yeah, a young man.

Walter Scott. Walter Scott's
quite an important player

in the family story, actually.

Erm...

There was an ancestor of mine
called Francis Buchanan,

who was a Jacobite supporter,

and he was one of the few
Jacobites - about 100, actually -

who were executed
after the rebellion.

He was marched down to Carlisle,

a bit of a trial there,

and strung up and, erm...

The estates were confiscated and
actually annexed to the Crown.

His crime was being, erm...

..Bonnie Prince Charles's
treasurer, allegedly.

Allegedly!

Walter Scott came on the scene
a little later than that,

but not much later than that.

And he was quite instrumental
in healing wounds,

and he persuaded people to stop
fighting each other, really,

and get back together.

And so, we got back some of
the family land as a result

of Walter Scott helping out.

Bless old Walter Scott.

He was he was incensed,
I think, by kind of the wrongs

that the government had... He loved
the stories of all the Jacobite,

and he felt really strongly
about that Jacobite history.

And he did his bit to kind of
reinvent Scotland, to kind of...

to recreate the image
of Scotland and clans,

and clan chiefs and clan members.

It just makes you feel
really passionate and proud

for Scottish history and culture.

And that's why we're doing the
inauguration next year, really,

because we want to celebrate it.

And that's what it's all
about, really, celebrating...

..celebrating our past.

and it was my great-grandfather.

purple, the teal, the pink,

and the kind of yellowy orange,
slash corally orange.

I love those colours,
I really want to keep them.

And I think, also, this is the first
inauguration in 350 years, yeah?

tartan's got a bit of black

or a bit of white in it.
We don't need black or white.

I think I'm out of my

Tartan's unique to Scotland,

and it's Scotland's

In Scotland, say, there's tens
of thousands of McDonalds,

hundreds of thousands
of Campbells, and whatnot.

If you ask all these people
who their clan chief is,

nobody knows.

But then, we're seeing a lot of
people now buying kilts from us

who have never been to Scotland, and
they just love the romance of it -

the history, the underdogs.

It's all just...
Everything's made up, I think.

Throughout history, man, you
just tell a story that you want

people to believe in and...

I would like some

And so, this is what I do every day.

This is dandelion root.

And people...

People kind of malign
dandelion, say it's a weed.

It's one of the best anti-cancer...

..thing you can get,
actually, dandelion root.

It's fantastic.

And there's so many academic papers
which show it's anti-cancer.

I just chop all that up
every day and eat it raw.

I'm motivated.
I'm not getting ill again.

I tell you, nothing's going to...

I didn't even get the Covid.

You know, I don't get anything now.

I had cancer, oh, ten, 11 years ago.

I'm not going to go there again.

And there are so many different
things you can do to fix it.

That way, my immune system
gets everything it needs.

A letter from Scott to
Peter Buchanan, in 1816,

saying that they're going
to be coming on a visit.

And he's obviously bringing
some people with him. Yeah.

So, he says, "We'll be with
you on Sunday and on Monday,

"and I suppose..."
I quite like this phrase.

"I suppose I must show Loch Katrine
to my English ladies."

So, they've obviously
got people's guests

and they're bringing
the guests here,

and then he's going to have
to show them Loch Katrine.

You get the sense that maybe
by 1816 he's slightly weary

of showing people Loch Katrine.

I don't know...!

It shows that the family
were friends and he'd feel

relaxed enough to talk to him.

That's good to know, yeah.

For the inauguration, we're going
to have all the clan chiefs

with banners, and, yeah, it's kind
of like reinventing Walter Sco...

Not... Following his footsteps
and taking inspiration from

his work in trying to promote
the Highlands and islands

and make it more of a...

Cos before him, it wasn't
a tourist attraction all.

So, we're trying to create
this ceremony and to try and...

..yeah, walk in his
footsteps in kind of a way.

I mean, he's a great man, and
we're only doing it a tiny way,

but it's just follow
what he did, really.

My father basically knows nothing
in the way of what to do

with clan stuff, because...

I think he doesn't really
know how with clan stuff either.

We're just doing our absolute best.

Basically, we're kind of
showing our face, kind of...

I'm trying to help out

I mean, he's mostly the expert
when it comes to helping

people understand.
I mean, they come up to our tent

and they want to know more about
the history, they want to know more.

We've got a full
history there, actually.

And it's said that
Sir Alexander Buchanan

came face-to-face with
the Duke of Clarence,

who was the brother of King Henry V
of England... Yeah.

..and escaping his thrust, he
staked Duke through the left eye,

killing him. Really?

for the clan and
this kind of history,

and I think it would be wrong
for us to not do our part.

They have, in their midst,
a Commonwealth Games competitor,

captain of the
Scottish match rifle team.

So, on paper, he should be better

The story starts basically with
the great-grandfather, you know,

that came to build these railroads.

This was built by

William Cross Buchanan,
civil engineer.

And we are directly descendant
from the brother, John.

it's a home that's in...

Well, it was in
Glasgow, in Auchentoshan,

That used to belong to
William Cross and Anne Buchanan.

But this this home, unfortunately,
was destroyed in Second World War.

And it's good to see where
you come from, you know?

My grandfather,
my father and myself.

Even if we're far away
from our land...

..it is within us.

What is important...

..is that we see where
all Buchanan are.

Many in Scotland, many abroad.

And believe me, it's a gift.

And to know where we are,
where we come from.

..to the 12th chief of Buchanan,

Walter Buchanan, which is...

It reads,

So, it's a...

to the 12th Chief Buchanan.

This is nice, no?

But I think that the chief of the
clan should be born and raised

in Scotland, being able to
understand and communicate

with all members of the Scottish
clan, no? Clan Buchanan.

But nevertheless,
this is nice to find.

Now I know that there is some...

..some honour inside of who
am I, where do I come from.

Proudly member of the Clan Buchanan.

Reads "Come to drink

I don't know exactly how it came.

But I saw that there was
a Buchanan whisky, so I said,

"I'm in Mexico, I'm going
to produce Buchanan mezcal."

The mezcal that we produce here,

it's PWB, as in
Pedro Walter Buchanan.

And we're having this one
and we're having another brand,

which is called El De Mi Jefe.
It's the mezcal...

Who's that mezcal for? My chief.

This is Don Lencho.

Cultural treasure, living
cultural treasure of the mezcal.

He's been granted this recognition
by the Mexican Regulatory Council.

He's been producing
mezcal for 60 years.

I love going to the Palenque,

meeting Don Lencho,
Sabina and the family.

The whole community that...

They all gather there in friendship

and share what they have.

Sabina, she's the
wife of Don Lencho.

I love the community.

It's something...
I don't know the right word.

But it's like food to your soul.

For me to get acquainted with now
the inauguration of the chief,

to get to know the chief,

was extremely happy.

It was emotional.

It gave me a sense of belonging.

And I think that's a task that
should come for the chief, no?

and bring back a little bit
of tradition and culture.

I think it's putting
a modern twist on it.

I would love to
design my own tartan

cos I don't have one for my name.

So, I would love to create my own
and make my own history behind it,

so that the future generations
of my family would be like,

"Oh, my great-great-great-gran
designed this tartan

"and she done it decades,
like centuries, after."

I feel like you'd be witnessing
a little bit of history...

I think it's sad that the only way
somebody can do something about it

is if they've got a lot
of money to spend on it.

You know what I mean? To be able to
bring it back. I think it would be

nice if it could just be more
mainstream for everyone.

like Clan McKenzie or whatever.

If there was something like that,
I'd be right up for that.

there's something primal
that you feel it in your blood.

they've essentially
included everybody in it.

This crown almost doesn't
represent so much him,

but represent all the people
that are part of the clan.

What we've been doing is, rather

I've been thinking a
lot about the connection

between what Scott was
inventing and what was seen today.

A romantic construction of the
Highlands and, by extension,

the whole of Scotland, and the
relationship of all of that

to tourism are, in many ways,

synonymous with the writer
Walter Scott.

We have seen that
romantic version of Scotland,

the Scotland that people associate
with the tourist industry -

tartan, tradition, clans,
all those things.

Quite a lot of it is made up.

But it is drawing on things
that people recognise.

You know, it's a very real
part of people's identity.

I think the Buchanans are
making their history today.

People make up traditions.

They make up the things that
are suitable for their own times.

They adapt things which maybe
have some truth from the past

or some origin in the past.

I think "made up", you know,
presumes there's some kind of

truth out there that
we're comparing it against,

and there probably isn't.

We've managed to reintroduced
a very important historic event,

which has really been lost for
centuries, into the clan calendar,

every clan calendar.

People can use this event now as
a blueprint for their own events.

So, it's not just unique
to the Buchanan clan.

Other clan chiefs have been
eyeing it up, actually,

and I think they're going
to be using it too.

We've successfully
reclaimed our history.

The Buchanans are back.

I know that I'm...

..close, close, close to where
my ancestors used to live.

I walked into here with some
degree of determination...

..cos I see where
the house was built.

I could see trees similar,
like, to that one,

but they were about...

..200 years, more than 200 years.

But I don't know how old that tree
is, but it really look like one.

So, I said, I'm going to see if
there is some stones or something.

Because sometimes when there's
something before, you know,

you can see irregularities
in the ground,

and in this case, you can see,
I was looking for stones.

So, I started, and all of a
sudden I started and I said...

And I felt this.

The house was destroyed

by a German bomb in 1941.

I don't know if that's the
way it would look like.

But...

This place reminds me of the
place where the house used to be.

So I'm taking this
souvenir to Mexico.

It's hard to tell, no?
You never know.

But it could be
something that represents

what I've been looking for.

Don't have the ring. But I will
have the ring of Buchanan.
