In 1973, Jacques Tati filmed Parade at the Stockholm Cirkus.
The film was based on โSporting impressions,โ
his world-famous music-hall act.
He shot for the first time on video, 16 mm, and 35 mm.
This 2013 restoration respects those differences in format and texture.
Come on, Karen!
Get your programs!
Get your programs!
We're pleased to present a show
in which everyone's invited to participate.
The artists and clowns are you and me.
We're all gathered around the ring of...
Parade!
Thanks.
We're here at the Municipal Stadium
for the French Soccer Championships.
At 2:34 on the clock, the home team has leapt into action.
Roquefier passes to Asta, who's wide open.
Will he shoot? He shoots!
The ball misses the goal by 20 inches
on goalkeeper Zardi's left, the goalpost's right,
if you're facing southwest. Ball back in play!
The defense is in trouble.
The goalkeeper goes into action.
And now the light heavyweight bout
between Kid Sullivan
and his challenger, Rocky Banzini.
Listeners, we're here at the Roland Garros Tennis Stadium.
To the left of my mike is Schmidt,
and to the right is Darson.
Forehand by Darson.
Backhand by Schmidt.
Backhand by Darson.
Forehand by Schmidt.
Forehand by Darson.
Backhand by Schmidt.
For those listeners who've just joined us,
they've been playing for two hours and 50 minutes,
and the crowd is as excited as ever
about a backhand by Dawson...
a forehand by Schmidt.
Forehand by Darson.
In 1900...
tennis technique was quite different.
Observe:
Here's my grandpa's backhand.
Grandma's forehand.
1900.
There.
And now, ladies and gentlemen...
the comic animal trainer...
Karl Kossmayer!
We need five or six volunteers
to try to ride the mule.
Come on, you athletes!
Who'll be first?
Right this way, sir.
We need a few more good riders.
Here come the athletes!
That makes three.
Foun
Any girls who like to ride are welcome too.
A few more brave spectators and we'll begin.
Who'll be first? You?
This gentleman will do the honors.
The ring is all yours.
No, not yellow.
It's orange. You see?
But how will you...?
Not bad.
Chocolate ice cream!
Caramel candy!
Morn, is he going to swallow that sword?
To the bar.
Ah, they have champagne.
Fruit juice, please.
Chocolate ice cream!
Chocolate, sir?
Vanilla? Here you are.
Get your ice cream!
It's good. You should have gotten one.
I enjoyed the first half, especially the jugglers.
Did you want ice cream?
The mule was great.
Very funny.
I wonder how the second part will be.
You... tennis... good!
Show us how you direct traffic.
You can't be serious.
Allow me to show you
an English policeman in London.
How about a French policeman?
French?
South American!
After the intermission...
the set decorators!
Allow me to present...
Boom Circus!
On guitar, Bjรฉrn Linder...
on drums, Jan Carlsson...
and on bass, Gรฉran Lagerberg.
Quiet, please. I'd like to announce
that we have with us tonight
a great singer...
Pia Colombo!
See the carousel
Spinning colors round
Here's the caravan
Clowns and jugglers lead
When all the lights go down
The wild, enchanting world
Of our entertainers
Takes life before your very eyes
See the carousel
Spinning colors round
Here's the caravan
Clowns and jugglers lead
The musicians play
Their sweet serenade
Dressed up to the nines
Here comes the parade!
Go back to your seats.
I'll conduct.
Quiet!
Please excuse this little incident. On with the show.
Come now.
You're joking. Give me that.
See the carousel
In every child's eyes
Such wonder can be read
And every lover's gaze
Reflects the bright sun's rays
Let the spotlights shine
On the acrobats
And you, audience
Behold the splendors
Such color and music
Thrilling masquerade
World of fantasy
Here comes the parade!
The musicians play
Their sweet serenade
Dressed up to the nines
Here comes the parade!
Such color and music
Thrilling masquerade
World of fantasy
Here comes...
the parade!
- Looking for something? - A comb.
I had it earlier.
There's paint everywhere!
