hidden treasures here

that we're really unaware of.

of antiques and collectables...

because I just love
all sorts of objects.

As a pawnbroker,

I see a variety of objects
every single day,

and I do know the best way
to get the best price for them.

For me, it's all about
creating a look,

and that's what really sells.

It's the middle of a busy week
for the team in East London...

..and Clive has had a call
about a collection

he's particularly excited about.

Who doesn't like a vintage car?
And he's got a little collection.

It's about 20 vehicles in total.
Oh, wow.

So Rolls-Royces...

..Jaguars...

..Minis, apparently,

they can be quite collectable now,
can't they? Absolutely, yeah.

Well, I'm from a family
of vintage car-lovers,
so I'm very envious of that one.

Oh, I think you could be a customer.

Well, this is where I store
most of the cars.

I call it a showroom, but
it used to be a swimming pool.

John has been collecting
for over 20 years,

and with classic cars covering
every last inch of his four-bed
property near Kettering,

he's running out of space
for his passion.

I seem to keep buying cars
and doing them up.

I get emotionally attached to 'em,

that's the problem.

They're like living things to me,
and I just like nuts and bolts

and fitting them all up.

It's just been in my blood
since I was 16.

Once you get petrol in your veins,
it stays in there for a long time.

Sometimes just come out
and sit in them.

I know it's a bit sad, but...

With over £200,000 spent
over the years,

John's passion has cost him
all his time, as well as his money.

Sometimes I get a voice
out the kitchen window,

"Are you coming in yet?"

I say, "Well, it's not dark yet."

They are part of the family.

Some of them are taken more care of

than the...humans in the family.

She's probably right, but the cars
earn some money for us,

so, you know...

After nearly two decades of running
a busy wedding-car business...

I bought them 17 years ago.

the 1935 vintage Rolls-Royce
and the '55 Silver Wraith.

John is looking to slow down
and refocus.

I'm looking to raise, hopefully,
about £50,000, plus.

I know it's a lot of money, but...
retirement doesn't come cheap.

It'll be a very sad day when they
go, because they're part of me.

How am I going to feel about a drive
without any cars?

When you get that call from somebody
who's had a collection,

whilst it's exciting,
you also know that as much as
they might not admit it,

there's going to be
an emotional link there
to those vehicles somewhere,

and sometimes, it just
becomes too difficult.

They can't sell them.

This one here, my eldest son,

I bought this because I could get
his baby seat in the back

and still go to Hot Rod runs.

There's lots of memories in there.

Who doesn't love a Mini?

It's a fun little thing.

The limited-edition Mini 30
was built in 1989

to celebrate three decades
of the classic car,

which was the epitome of cool
back in the swinging '60s.

The 30 is a modern take
on the original,

and with only 3,000 ever made,
it's a true collector's item,

with mint-condition models
fetching up to £12,000.

Surprisingly enough,
the kind of 20-year-old people

are sort of getting into
these vehicles,

because when they look at
what they've...

what modern cars offer them, it's
nothing but a mundane experience,

whereas these things
are relatively cheap to buy

and, bizarrely,
quite cheap to insure.

If this was nicely photographed
and then put onto
Instagram or TikTok,

then you might find
that actually somebody'll just go,

"Do you know what? I'll have that.
Looks like fun."

With his first car picked out
for sale,

Clive's eager to tell John
of his plan.

I think absolute best result
for that

will be to use that monster
that is social media.

What we've got to do is produce
loads of photos, videos,

and then get that out there.

Between 6,000 and 7,000...

So if we said maybe 6,500,

but I'll stick firm on that price.

I've put a lot of effort into it,

and 6,500 is what I want.

This one's a special one because
me and the wife got married in it...

the Silver Cloud might be too close
to John's heart to let go.

1935. Rolls-Royce, 2025 Landaulet.

It's just lovely, isn't it?

As far as I know, it was originally
built in 1935 for His Highness,

the Maharaja of Baroda.

I've got all the build specs
from Rolls-Royce.

and has what I think is going
to be the best route for this -

one of John's wedding cars

So this one's obviously
been properly maintained.

It looks like it's been restored
at some stage in its life.

Meanwhile, back at base,
Rachel's had an inquiry that's got
the rest of the team interested.

I've just been speaking to
a lovely lady called Caroline...

..her father has unfortunately
passed away a little while ago now,

and she's inherited his haunted inn.

From the sounds of it,
he was quite the collector.

Lots of curiosity.

She said there's some
maritime bits and pieces...

..maybe some taxidermy.

All sounds in keeping
with a haunted inn.

It does, doesn't it?

I love curios and... Yeah?
Sounds tailor-made for me.

Well, I was hoping
you would volunteer.

You've sold it to me.
Good. I'm glad.

I can't remember when
Dad started collecting

because he's always done it.

Buying antiques,

he probably spent thousands.

He just ended up
buying too much stuff.

I mean, the place is just
chock-a-block with things.

Caroline's father John
bought the Ancient Ram Inn
in Gloucestershire back in 1968.

For over 50 years, he crammed
all 12 rooms of his eerie abode

with a vast collection.

His diaries are full of trips
to antique centres.

Every other day, he was up there,
bidding on stuff.

"Exciting day at
Chipping Manor Antique Sales.

"I am now the proud owner
of an antique cannon barrel
about four-foot long.

"A fine specimen,
probably from a man of war.

"Who knows what action
it may have seen?"

But it's fascinating reading
how excited he was by his objects.

After his death five years ago,

he left the inn and its contents
to Caroline.

To me, it's my dad's house.

All his money and energy
was spent on this property.

When I walk around and I listen to
the creaks of the floorboards,
it's Dad.

It's just Dad.

I've come to love it like Dad did.

Caroline's beloved inn
is valued at around £350,000.

Somebody said to me once,
"Why didn't you just
sell it and enjoy life?"

I wouldn't sell this place
unless the roof fell off.

It's just got hold of me.

It possesses you.
It gets under your skin.

So to cover costs of
nearly £3,000 a month,

Caroline pulls in what she can,
running it as a paranormal
location business,

open for ghost tours - if you dare.

It's definitely worth a visit
if you're looking for ghosts.

But these alone don't bring
in enough to keep the inn

from falling to rack and ruin.

Well, I do need to raise
thousands to keep this place.

The walls are falling down.

I need three new chimney pots.

We're absolutely desperate
for money at the moment.

Anything would be useful.

I wouldn't have even entertained
getting rid of any stuff.

It's the attachment.

It's just so precious.

But I've got to grow up...

At the end of the day, he's in here

and he's in the fabric
of the building.

If he's going to keep this property
stood up for a few hundred
years more,

then if I've got anything
valuable, I need to sell it.

But will the market reflect
collector John's desired price
of £35,000?

With this one, then, John...
what do you think?

The pre-war Rolls-Royce market
has declined over
the last five to ten years.

These are sort of...levelled off.

I suppose I would have put
a value of somewhere between
25,000 and 30,000 on it.

So you're talking
25,000 to 30,000 on this? Yeah.

And what would...
What would you be happy with

in an auction scenario
as a reserve, for example?

I'd put it at the bottom end
of the estimate. Right, OK,

you'd be happy with... 25.
..with the vendor putting
in a £25,000 reserve.

I'd be very happy with that.

It's lower than owner John
was hoping for.

But with the maharajah's car valued,

another Rolls has caught expert
John's eye - a 1955 Silver Wraith.

What I like about this car is,
it is quite well maintained.

Everything sort of
opens and closes nicely.

This has been restored
and repainted.

That is a little bit of
a detriment to this car.

Because the colour is wrong.

Because the colour's wrong? Right.

I like this car a lot,
but being the wedding...stigma,

I'm valuing it around
the same as this one, about 25.

I'm hoping that John will realise
that I've done enough research

into the market to be able to say
that, yes, you know, I'm right.

This is where this car should sit.

With each car valued at £10,000
less than John hoped for,

it's up to Clive to advise
on the best next steps.

What I've got to do
is go and have a chat to John

and see, as my client,
whether he's comfortable with that,

whether he wants to release
these two vehicles to new owners,

get them out of his way in exchange
for a minimum of £50,000.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

I've had a chance to chat
to John, the expert.

A man who really, really, really
knows his vintage Rolls-Royces.

He's come back with some prices,
and really just want to see
how those go with you.

And the prices are based upon
the vehicles going into

one of their specialist sales.
Starting at the top,

the vintage, they are at 25,000...
Right...

The provenance has got to
add a little bit.

I mean, not many people own a car
that was built for the second
richest man in the world.

Provenance will add a tiny,
tiny little bit of saleability,

but not necessarily to the price.

So, you know, the whole story
of the maharajah, etcetera,

is good because it gives people
the confidence to buy it,

but it doesn't necessarily
add to the value

of one that didn't have that.

The Wraith...there at 25,000. Ooh.

And these are the prices
that they would accept them

as a reserve.

But what's your thoughts?

I mean, where are you at..?

25,000 for the...

For the vintage.

Yeah. So I said a low of
about 27 and high of 35.

Oh, so it wasn't a million miles
off on that? No, no.

And then the Wraith, 25,000,
which I think you were a little...
Very disappointed with that.

Obviously, I wanted more,
but who knows?

They might fetch a bit more.

Exactly. Yeah.

With the Mini also on the list,
Clive's found three potential motors

towards John's 50K retirement fund.

John's a lovely guy, and I really
want to do a good job for him.

And I very much hope these vehicles
make the right money.

He's gone with everything
that I've suggested.

And so if it doesn't work,

I will feel a great sense of
disappointment.

There will be slight anxiety
until it's a done deal,

done and dusted.

Ronnie and Rachel are searching
for a collection of items...

which Caroline needs

These are quite nice,

and famous nautical people.

I think the amount she needs,
it's there, but it's in the volume.

She's got things that are worth,
you know, £10, £20, £30, £40, £50.

Those...all those tiny sales
are going to all add up.

I wonder what's in that box.

for one big ticket item.

interesting.

I'm trying to think of a striped
animal of that size.

You know, I used to go
to the Natural History Museum
a lot when I was a kid

and draw the specimens there.

So I'm very interested in animals.

And...there's an extinct animal
from Australia and Tasmania

called a thylacine, and it was
a carnivorous marsupial.

That looks rare to me.

Caroline? I've found something

that I think you should
have a look at.

That, to me, might be an extinct
animal called a thylacine.

So from my limited experience
of extinct animal pelts, um,

tens of thousands.

Really? Yeah. You're joking.

And this needs to be DNA-tested.

Oh, that's exciting.

If this is a thylacine,
this could be very valuable

and this could solve Caroline's
problems.

This could bring in the money
that she needs.

of the skin, with hair on it.

With hair? OK.

Thylacines were
large, dog-like marsupials

that became extinct in the 1930s.

They're often confused with a small
antelope called an Abbott's duiker.

If Caroline's pelt turns out
to be a duiker,

as a registered endangered species,

it would be illegal to sell.

You'd never know a piece
was missing.

That's going to reveal
all we need to know.

But if it is a genuine thylacine
like Ronnie suspects,

it's extremely rare, with one
recently sold for £140,000.

If it's a thylacine, we have to find
the right place to sell it.

Morally, the right place to sell it
is probably a museum.
