I was lucky enough

to see you as Lady Macbeth,
opposite Charles Clayton
as Macbeth.

theater in Harlem. I remember.

And your performance
has stayed with me ever since.

and commanding,

yet, also vulnerable.

come from?

When I was in high school,
I would've crossed the Sahara
for a group like this.

I started this club
because I was tired.

Plain and simple.

I was tired of this bogus town
telling me who I was.

Tired of treading water in
the Caucasian sea of opinions.

We all needed a haven.

And I know I wasn't
the only one tired of being
told no by the gatekeepers.
