car crusher in northern Alberta.

Before we go in there,
people die in the muskeg.

Animals die, people die,
trucks get swallowed whole.

Narrator: They risk their gear
in a dangerous recovery...

(revving)

...and race head-to-head
to save classic cars.

Jess: No!

(engines rumbling)

(tires squealing)

Narrator: Across Canada,
there are thousands of valuable

classic cars,
abandoned in ravines,

swamps, and barns.

A hidden gold mine

out of reach until now.

I'm a treasure hunter.
That's what I do.

I hunt classic cars
that others can't get.

Lee: This is definitely the most
car rescue rescue we've done.

Matt: Go!

Both: (grunting)
Whoa!

Matt: It takes a team to
achieve the impossible,

and I have the best.

Pilot Jess is
our eye in the sky.

My brother Steve's our wrench.

Dave is an expert body man.

Lee sets cars free.

And me? I set the mission
and I pay the bills.

We want to use your boat.

Narrator: They rescue cars
that were lost to history.

- As a winch.
- (laughing)

Narrator: And sell them
all over the world.

- (all cheering)
- Matt: People say we're crazy,

but I say we're
just crazy enough.

Narrator: Matt and his team of
car hunters have travelled to

northern Alberta,
searching for valuable cars

near the town of Sexsmith.

This is an awesome area, Jess.

Like, there's stuff
in everyone's yard.

We are in the heart
of car country, Jess.

Narrator: Matt and his brothers
used to work in this region,

when they owned a company
in the oil industry,

and they spotted a lot
of cars while on the job.

We got around. I mean, we went
all over with that company.

Feel like it'll be easy
for us to spot things.

I'm feeling good
about this trip,

I love flying
in northern Alberta.

It's nice and flat,
easier for me to fly,

and it's easy
to spot those cars.

Matt: There's just
lots of metal, you know?

No one's been in yet.

Like, we're getting there
before anybody else is.

Are they calling to you?

Oh, I'm feeling good about it.

I'm pretty sure I spotted,
like, 100 already in

the last hour and a half.

I mean, they're everywhere.
It's like Skittles.

They're just
peppered everywhere.

Oh, Jess. You'll never
guess what's below us.

It's a crusher.

Damn, the crusher.
A car hunter's worst enemy.

The crusher's hunting
the same thing we are.

We're saving them,
and they're erasing them.

We gotta put a stop to it.

Oh, they've already got, like,
10 or 12 crushed down there.

Let's take her down.

Maybe we can get there before
he crushes the last couple.

Narrator:
Car hunters dread the crusher,

a metal scrapper that
focuses mostly on old vehicles.

They buy cars, flatten them,

then transport them
to a recycling facility.

To a crusher, a car's valued
by its weight in scrap metal,

not it's potential
to be restored.

Matt has spotted
an '80s square-body Chevy

that may be worth saving.

Matt: Hurry up, Jess. Come on!
They're going to crush it!

- Ah! Come on!
- Jess: No!

(groaning)

- Hey, what's going on?
- Man, you know what that is?

It's scrap.

Look at all those classics
that you guys are crushing.

They want them cleaned up,
that's what we do.

I'm sorry. We're probably coming
off as really standoffish.

- We're just big--
- No, no, no. I understand.

--car enthusiasts and we're in
the area trying to save the cars

and we get that
you're also doing a job, too.

I thought you guys
almost never leave your yard.

Most guys just
tow cars to you.

Scrap prices are up,
and we get paid to

take 'em to the scrap yard.
Wherever they call us,

we go in and clean up the mess.
They recycle all the scrap,

and everybody's happy.

Matt: All that happens
once you crush it

is it just gets
melted down into rebar.

Like, soulless,
cold, iron rebar.

Where are you guys from?

Fort St. John.

It's pretty far away
from Fort St. John.

That's why we have wheels.
We can go wherever.

Where you going next?

I can't tell you that,
but I gotta get back to work

here pretty quick so that
I can get there and get going.

Come on, Matt,
we gotta let him do his job.

Narrator: Now that Matt has
discovered the metal recycler

in the area,
he calls an emergency meeting

to talk about a new plan.

So, what are we doing here?
I thought we were heading north.

- We saw a mobile crusher.
- You're kidding me.

- Yeah.
- Like, right here, right now?

Yeah, 30 kilometres over there.

This crusher in this
area changes everything.

Old plan, out. New plan, in.

Now that he's on the move,
we gotta get ahead of him.

He will have a plan,
he will have this farm,

that farm, that farm.
He'll work a direction,

he'll work his own grid.

Find the crusher,
locate the areas he's going to,

get out in front of him,
save as much as we can.

Sounds like we're basically
polar opposites here.

Crusher's not going to,
you know, do what we want,

so we kind of gotta beat him,
beat him to the punch.

- Yeah.
- It's a race.

Dave, I think I'm going to
drive with you if that works.

- 100%.
- Alright.

Jess, do your thing, right?
We know you got this.

Anything you see,
as soon as you see it,

Narrator: With a new plan in
tow, the team heads out,

determined to save
a truckload of automotive gems

before they get recycled.

While Jess takes to the skies,
the guys hit the road,

hopeful they'll
find something fast.

When I was flying with Jess,
we spotted this awesome spot.

I mean, lots of cool stuff,
lots of weight,

lots of tractors, implements,

and a few--
it looks like a few cars.

So, Dave and I are going to
go follow up on that.

- Dave.
- Gord, nice to meet you.

- Matt. Nice to meet you.

- We're car guys.
- Alright.

Caught you welding,
but that's not a car part.

It's a buffalo skull.
Try and make it as realistic

looking as possible,
and shiny polish when it's done.

You can tell a guy
like Gord just loves metal.

Like, everything in his
whole existence is metal.

I know you're an iron worker,

but you got
a couple anvils here.

I have a few anvils here.

My kind of guy.

This one is a no-name.
It's 127 pounds.

I got a certain number
that I'm after

- and I'm not quite there yet.
- Okay.

So, I try to pick 'em up
everywhere I go.

You gotta have some bad habits.

- Right? (chuckling)
- That's right.

I think the reason I like
anvils so much is because

I love cars so much. I mean,
they're like the same thing.

Somebody drove this car
for its whole entire life.

It's got a wealth of history.
The anvil's the same way.

Yeah, this one's kind of cool.

You don't see 'em
too short and pointy.

- Gord: No.
- It looks like an early one.

Gord: It's an odd looking thing.

When you're buying them,
if there's a flaw in the anvil,

like a crack or anything.

(clanking)

See how it's a thud?

- (clanking)
- Doesn't ring.

(ringing)

It's no different than cars.

I like the stories.
I collect the stories.

Some people collect pogs,
some people collect stamps,

I collect anvils.

Dave and I and our team
are up here hunting old cars.

We're really big into
saving the old stuff.

You know, we saw
your old cars out there,

lined up on the fence line,

and we just couldn't
help ourselves.

We had to come see if you
collect them or build them.

I don't collect them.

I'm actually going to
bring in a crusher.

But why crush them?

Eh, clean up the yard.

The price of scrap metal
is quite high right now.

So, may as well crush 'em
and get rid of 'em

and make more space
and make a little cash.

If it's possible,
if we can see if there's any--

- Absolutely.
- --out there that are good.

Absolutely,

Narrator: More of Gord's cars
are not of interest

to collectors or restorers.

Lot of plastic, no chrome,
not much soul, not much history.

But there is at least one

vehicle that's worth looking at.

Dave: That's a gorgeous truck.

Matt: Yeah, that's a really
nice one. Fargo, too.

Gord: Dad used to haul
logs on this truck.

This is the one in the boneyard
that I can't crush.

Oh, so you're not
going to crush it.

No. Someday I'd like
to do something with it

- in my spare time.
- Dave: Excellent.

Most people are afraid of doing
the metal work on a hot rod.

I mean, this would be
a natural for him.

It's good metal.

So, it's really great that
he's going to save this one.

Matt comes face to face with

his worst nightmare,
a mobile metal crusher

searching for scrap.

This crusher in this area
changes everything.

We gotta get ahead of him.

Narrator: Matt and Dave
are at Gord's boneyard,

where hundreds of cars
are destined to be scrapped,

but the guys are hoping
they can save at least one.

Holy crap, guys.
Wait, wait. Just wait.

- What the heck is that?
- Oh, wow.

- Dave: It's an El Camino '59.
- Gord: It is a Camino.

Matt: Oh, look at that grill,
that's great shape.

(chuckling)

Look at those lines,
like the roof comes back.

There are just so many
applications that people

would do to build this.
The Jetsons.

Dave: And it does look like
something off the Jetsons.

It's-- 100%.
This is total space era.

'59 El Camino wasn't a car,
but it wasn't a truck.

Not a good seller,
and super wild and crazy,

artistic, and it is a very rare,
very hard to find vehicle.

Like, I've only seen
two in my whole life.

So, to have a vehicle like
that out here in a yard

that's about to get crushed?
I mean, there's no question that

Dave and I have to
do whatever it takes to

try to save this thing.

There's a lot of work to do.

I didn't think it
was worth saving, really.

Matt: It's a big project,
but because of how rare it is--

- Gord: Yeah.
- --it's 100% worth saving.

When it comes to
those wings, '59?

I mean, who doesn't like a '59?

Do you think we should
buy the El Camino?

from the crusher, Steve and Lee

This is Chevy's take on
the whole car-truck thing.

We've never seen one.
It's gotta be worth something.

Oh, yeah. Like,
you'll never see this design

ever come back again, right?

From each corner, this car
has something else going on.

It's like as soon
as one line dives down,

another line comes up.

You know, this car's pretty
low to the ground, too.

Mm-hm.

I want to kind of be delicate
with it when it goes up.

'Cause the back
could be dragging.

Yeah.

We gotta make sure that we don't
twist it, we don't break it.

and we just get it
out in one piece.

Yeah, I think if you
grab the power wagon,

I'll try and figure out
how to move these horses.

Maybe I'll try

the heights start changing.

You get smaller
and the horse gets bigger.

managed to save one car,

but their search
is far from over.

Lee: Looks good.

Narrator: Matt and Jess are
hoping their bird's eye view

lots of iron, you know?

Like this guy's

Jess: Well, he's got
a big beautiful field

in front of them.

Bel Air. They spared
no expense with the Bel Air.

I think there's, you know,
the whole console's...

Narrator: The farmer who owns
the field wastes no time

in joining Matt and Jess.

- Jess: Hello!
- How ya doin'?

- Good, how are you?
- Good.

I heard you guys flying over
and I came to check it out,

see what you were doing.

A person who wears overalls
is a practical human.

A man after my own heart.

We're just in the area,
hunting for old cars,

and we noticed the Chevy.
Is there a story behind it?

We bought the land,

and the people
just left it here.

Matt: Yeah, it's 1955 Chevy.
It's the Bel Air model,

which is all the chrome,
it's the highest tier.

This was probably the most
desirable of all the years.

The '55.
It's seen a little better days.

It's a little crunchy.

You know, like the-- it looks
like the rockers are gone

and the lower fenders.
Parts-wise it's like

bumpers and grill and chrome.

My team and I are in the area
trying to basically save

as many of these cars on
this trip from the crusher.

I mean, they're just
going strong. Scrap is up.

There was a few more,
but this is what we saved.

So, you saved this one
from the crusher.

Yeah. I'd like to,
you know, see 'em get saved.

Only reason this car is still
here is because MJ saved it.

I'm really happy to hear that,
uh, that you seem like you want

to save them.

I like history and stuff,

and I'd like to,
you know, see them get saved.

The '55 Chev is not for sale,

but Matt is relieved that
the car will be preserved.

There's just something
about anvils that just,

you know, there's an aura
around them, you know?

An anvil was the heartbeat
of a pioneer family.

Without that anvil,
there'd be no pioneer family.

All the nails would have been
made on that, door hinges.

Horseshoes,
fixing their buggies.

Everything on this farm,
from the day they moved here

in a horse-drawn carriage,
was built on this anvil.

a lead from Matt and Jess,

Dave heads to a farm
to see if it pans out.

He's called the owner
to meet him at the site.

There's thousands
of cars out there,

and a lot of them
can be crushed,

but we want to stay
ahead of that game

where the crusher comes in
and destroys them all.

We're car guys,
and we spotted your cars here.

In particular, The Thing.

You don't see too many of these,
that's for sure.

Yeah, the seats go down
like this, and there you go.

And it's fairly complete, too,
so that's a big bonus.

Dave: That's actually
a pretty darn cool car.

Yeah, I'm quite surprised
that it's all here.

Narrator: The Volkswagen
Type-181 was developed in

the late '60s as a Jeep-like
vehicle for the German army.

It was renamed The Thing
for import in America,

and this durable, fun off-roader

quickly became
the thing to have.

It was loved for its
quirky head-turning style,

and bought by drivers
with a unique taste.

Fifty years later,
demand is still strong for

Volkswagen's
automotive oddball.

It's ugly nice.

isn't really my thing,

It's not for everybody,

This is probably exactly
what they're going to want.

It's one of those rare
cars where you sit in it,

and you feel the energy
they were trying to go for

when you're in it. It's like it
makes you happy being in it.

This is actually pretty nice.

The hydraulic fluid's there.

Like, it's not empty.

So, like,
there's no reason why this lift

shouldn't be going down.

Lee: That's working.

And then down.

Unfortunately,
without the stabilizer,

we can't safely use
the crane to lift The Thing.

I mean, these things are old.
Maybe a seal went in there

and it's just hydraulics.

Narrator: Without
a functioning stability jack,

Lee can't operate the crane.
The hydraulic repair is

a routine job, but the challenge
is finding an available mechanic

in this remote area.

I think it'd be way smarter
putting The Thing on the deck of

the truck with the power wagon.

Just back it up, slam it on,
and we'll limp it to

a place that can fix this.

Why don't you call
a hydraulic shop in town,

see what's up
as far as schedules,

if we can get this in now.

We got a cylinder

seems like it could be

race to get crane repaired...

something unusual from the sky.

Look, on this airport, there's,
like, huge black strips.

Like burnt rubber on it.

the Beaver Lodge Airport?

Oh, it's probably a drag strip.

Oh, there's some
big old buildings there.

So, they'll definitely
know what goes on.

Narrator: Matt and Jess
make a quick landing,

hoping their surprise visit

We were just trying to
find some signs of life here.

We just landed out front, so.

working on my daughter's
new junior dragster.

We were flying over and we saw
what we thought was an airport,

but it had these big
black marks down it, so.

Mm-hm. It's an airport
through the week,

and then on race weekends
they put a NOTAM on it

and they turn it into
a drag strip.

Narrator: The North Peace
Bracket Racing Association

carries on a long tradition of
drag racing in northern Alberta

and British Columbia,
gaining popularity in the '30s

and '40s. The sport was
a way for communities

to come together, work on cars,

and share in the fun
of competitive racing.

Once limited to
only boys and men,

clubs now encourage
girls and women

to get in the racer's seat.

- Is this your car?
- Yeah.

How fast does it go?

Right now it's going 790,
but dad's going to switch

the motor so it goes 1190.

I used to race almost
at the same age,

but, like, I never got
over the fear of the speed

when I was that age,
and she just seems to,

like, embrace it.

This one's going to be
called Sweet 'n' Sassy 2.

Did you come up with the name?

Actually,
my mom helped me.

Jess: Aww.

Because I'm kind of
sweet to my mom and sassy.

(Matt & Jess laughing)

Jess:
I love that.

And is it just you
that races, Emery?

My dad races and I have
a brother and he races, too.

This is a generational family,

and they're a race car
family at that.

They've got to have some
leads for us in the area.

We're in the area
hunting old cars,

trying to nip at
the heels of these crushers

that are all out here.

Yeah, I don't like it either.

All these old cars that
they don't make anymore.

I gotta ask.
Like, you don't know of anything

or seen anything
around the area?

I do know of an old race car.
Haven't seen it for a long time.

I think it's sitting
on Crown land there,

just kind of rotting away.

Our government sees a lot of
these cars as contaminants

or just abandoned by others,
so anything on Crown land,

if you have a permit to go get,
you can go get,

and it's not a big deal to
get the permit to recover it.

Don't really want to
tell you where it is.

(laughing) I don't blame you.
Gotta keep that car secret.

I'll make you a deal.

Emery was getting ready
to do some practice runs.

Do you guys want to race Emery?

If you guys win,
I'll gladly tell you directions

on how to get to it,

There's a lot riding
on winning this race,

and we need to win this race.

I know one thing about racing.
It's always about weight.

And I don't want to say that

I'm a lot bigger of
a person than you, Jess,

but I think this one's going to
be the lighter of the two of us

that might go down the track.

Well, we got the old '49 Chev.

We can get Dave
to bring it on by.

It's got a 350 in it.

When I was her age,
I was ripping around on quads,

and she's now ripping
around in cars.

This'll be fun.

and Matt's telling us all to

come down to the airport.

Oh, yeah, we're going to
have a drag race!

No one's ever seen what a pilot
in a '40s pickup will do

against an eight-year old
in a top fuel dragster.

Jess: I'm excited...
but honestly, I'm also nervous.

Emery, yes,
she's younger than me,

but she's been doing
this for a long time.

I've never raced before!
And she's also in a very small

and very fast race car.
I'm in a '49 Chev.

It's huge and it's not as fast.

Let me paint you a little
picture about our 1949 Chev.

My brothers and I put
a V8 Chevy 350 engine in it,

five-speed tranny,
positraction, 12-bolt read end.

It's going to rip.

You can go like--
(imitating engine rumbling)

--and then hold it like--
(imitating engine)

- Emery: I'm going to go.

the Beaver Lodge Airport,

with Jess going
head to head in a drag race

with eight-year old Emery,
in hopes of securing a lead to

a potentially great car.

and I think it's really

She knows how to drive that car,
and she does very well at it.

my first race I've ever done?

racing with it back in the day.

Narrator: Steve and Lee
are following up

on the race car lead.
Driving in, Steve immediately

spots a potential issue.

I used to work up in
the oil field, you know,

road building
and lease building,

and muskegs all around,
you know,

it's something you deal with,
and it was something dangerous

that you had to really respect,
and it does happen,

and people do tragically die.

It can become
a situation very quickly.

What the heck are you doing?
Why'd you stop?

You couldn't feel it driving in,
but it was starting to get wavy,

and that's sort of
telling us we're getting

into a bit of a muskeg.

Muskeg? What's a muskeg?

Kind of like a swamp
underneath a hard layer, right?

The top layer is, like, firm,
but underneath it's all liquid.

It can swallow a truck.

Yeah, I know anything I tell Lee
he's naturally just going to

question or make fun of.

Before we go in there
you need to know,

like, people die in the muskeg.
Animals die, people die,

trucks get swallowed whole.
We gotta be serious,

'cause you make one step,
you're in, I can't get you out.

I guess we'll
just be very careful

walking through this stuff.

The MGA is just a jewel
for any British car fan.

They're a nice little package
as far as being a sports car.

The body of it, you know,
is a cool-looking design.

I'll give them that,
and the shape of the fenders

and hood, it has that
sports car look that I think

a lot of other
companies copied later on.

This is a car that
a lot of people want.

It's actually really cool
how they debuted the car.

They put it in racing series
in Europe to sort of showcase it

as a racing car before
they started selling it.

- Is it safe to go out on that?
- Yeah, no.

Just looking at
the depth of the track

and how saturated it is,

this is pretty bad
as far as sinking, right?

Lee: It seems firm here.

It's a bit...

Maybe Steve was onto something.

this is, uh, it's sticky,

it's not mud, that's for sure.

you feel like you're
just on top of, like, a--

like, a little layer
and then it's just like nothing.

we gotta get this thing out.

Not a lot of rust.

The interior of the car's a lot
of the time the worst factor

because it just keeps it wet,
you know?

Keeps, like, the floor wet,
and this is all dry in here.

Let's get the power wagon
and just start working

this MGA out.

No, I mean, we're not sinking,

but we wouldn't risk the power
wagon being stuck in the middle.

We got nothing to pull off of
as far as getting ourselves out.

That's a one-time truck.

That truck's four-wheel drive,
it's our heavy-duty tow truck,

but just in that is the problem.
It's heavy.

You know, weight is
a negative in this situation.

It's not going to over rock,

it's going to over
that thin layer.

Once you pop through there,
the wheel's just going to

become caked in it, and you're
never going to get out,

you're never going to get
the footing to get back out.

This would be kind of
the perfect opportunity for,

like, the Nodwell?

From working out here,
I know a few guys that are

still around, and they--
I think they have the right

machine for this job.

It's got the same gin pole
as the power wagon.

It'll work, I think.

of structure to that body.

to Edmonton and he'd come back,

and there'd be our new family
car for the next year or two or.

In my mind I really
wanted to see it repaired.

Now, every time I turn
around there's people in here

pulling things out
and it was time to clean up.

I get it. I mean,
like, to watch your dad's car,

your childhood car
ripped apart one piece of

chrome at a time like that,
