Crap, is it pouring, eh?

We're still way too far out
to go back with two cars.

Narrator: ...they need
to catch a break...

abandoned in ravines,

swamps, and barns.

Car Rescue rescue we've done.

Matt: Go!

Pilot Jess is
our eye in the sky.

My brother Steve's

Dave is an expert body man.

Lee sets cars free.

And me? I set the mission
and I pay the bills.

Narrator: They rescue cars
that were lost to history.

Narrator: And sell them
all over the world.

- (all cheering)
- Matt: People say we're crazy,

but I say we're
just crazy enough.

There are a lot of systems
that come through here.

It's raining right now,
we were grounded for a few hours

due to thunder and lightning.

For me, personally, it's going
to be a bit of a concern.

Rainy River District.
Sure stands up to its name.

Narrator: The team are 3000
kilometers from home in

Fort Frances, where Rainy Lake
narrows to form Rainy River,

the boundary between
Ontario and Minnesota.

Their time in Ontario
has been hit and miss.

With only a few days
left for one last hunt,

they need a big win to pay for
this 6000 kilometre round trip,

but they're stuck
battling the weather,

terrible conditions
for car hunting.

Jess: The town is
struggling with some flooding.

The floods are major.

Narrator: Local news caught
images of the devastation.

Man: It's definitely
uncharted territory.

We've never been here before.

Reporter: Those words are a
repeating theme in Fort Frances

as the community continues
to battle rising flood waters.

As of Tuesday, water levels
were within three inches of

the record 339.23 metres
set in 1950.

By Thursday or Friday of
this week,

we'll end up breaking
the 72-year record.

The weather here doesn't
make it easy to do what we do,

but if my research is right,
it's worth it.

Narrator: Matt's sure this
once-thriving commercial

fishing town is a gold
mine for valuable cars.

There would have been
hundreds of fishermen.

They bought some sweet cars.

We want these remote communities
that are like a time capsule.

Narrator: In the '50s,
people flocked to Fort Frances

for its strong economy from
a booming fishing industry.

But in the '90s, with new
regulations and fishing quotas,

work dwindled and they left.

Fisheries were abandoned,

and gas-guzzling
motors left behind.

Those cars
are still out there.

They wouldn't have known
what it was worth in the future.

Cars they would have
left behind are worth

tens of thousands
of dollars now.

Narrator:
But with water this high,

old cars are at
risk of rusting faster,

and even being
destroyed by ice.

The team must save them now
before they're lost for good.

Narrator: With no time to waste,
the team meets up.

Fort Frances, back in the day
there used to be a huge industry

here for fishing,
so a lot of money,

a lot of people buying cars,
cool cars, fast cars.

Narrator: Matt believes this
year's Bass Competition is key

to finding the ones
left behind.

So, what are we
doing here at the derby?

One of the biggest
events of the year.

We get almost all of
our best tips for small towns.

You know,
everybody knows everybody.

You know I'm a Chevy guy,
like you, Steve,

and I love the Fords,
and this town had

both of those dealerships.

Sounds like we found
ourselves a nice little

fishing hole... for cars.

Absolutely.
Good pun there, too, buddy.

Did you work on that joke
the whole way here

or just came
naturally right now?

Took me a little time,

but I feel like it had
a good punch to it.

I think we should split up
and at the end we'll all

meet up and see who had the best
catch of the day, alright?

Dave: Oh, God.

Narrator: With a brief break
in the storm,

the team joins
the crowd at the derby.

There's a guy in town,
his first name's Ed.

Ed.

And, uh, you go and find him

and he's got
lots of old model A's.

(crowd chattering)

If you go the other
end of the causeway,

there's a guy that lives
on top of the hill.

He's got all kinds
of old cars.

I'm sure you'll
find something there

that you'll be interested in.

Are you guys locals here,
by chance?

Man: Yup, we are.

And what did you guys
do in the area?

I commercial fish.

Oh, really?

And so, what happened to
the commercial buildings?

Lot of them are still up there.
They're still there.

There were dozens of commercial
fishers along the shoreline

and they needed vehicles.

Woman: You know, people,
when they took their vehicles

out to the islands,
they just left them,

and we never thought
anything of it.

There's just old
vehicles everywhere.

- Yeah.
- You know?

And some of them have been
hauled out and sold for scrap.

- My nemesis.
- And now here you're

looking for them,
it's hilarious.

Narrator:
With some strong leads,

the team reunites
to talk tactics.

Well, how'd it work out, guys?

I talked to the guy
and he said he knows where

there's a bunch of
trucks on a hill.

Said all in the '40s and '50s.

Matt:
Definitely like era. Lee?

Guy named Ed might
have some Model A's.

So, we'll dig a little deeper

and find out
exactly where it is.

Where there's one Model A,
you know?

Yup, exactly.

Jess?

So, there were a lot of
commercial fishermen

in the area.
There were about 20 originally,

and now there's actually
only three, but because of that

there's a lot of
abandoned cars hopefully.

I like it.
How about that weather.

- Oh, God.
- Can't make up its mind.

Logistic nightmare. We're going
to have to be real careful.

We got three days
to fill this truck

and be rolling
down the road.

If the cars are
as good as this fish,

we're in the right spot.

Narrator: After asking
around at the derby,

Dave's found the location
of the old trucks

he got the tip-off about.

But even though it
stopped raining off-road,

on ground this wet,
he's in trouble.

(revving)

Damn thing is stuck!

(shouting)

No, on top of the damn hill

where we're supposed to check
out those trucks.

While Dave waits for back-up

in this unpredictable weather,

Jess and Matt are hunting
for old commercial fisheries.

But, worried about
the flying conditions,

Jess wants some extra
supplies for the plane.

Narrator: Even fighting
the weather and the clock,

something's caught Matt's eye.

the area hunting cars ourselves,

and we heard that there might be
some old commercial fisheries.

a lot of commercial fisheries

around here years ago.

starting to take its toll

slowly backs up.

light work of the muddy track,

stuck on a muddy track

for vintage trucks.

- Steve: Yeah.

While waiting for the guys,

Dave spoke to owner Bob,
who said for the right price,

everything was up for grabs.

Lee: So, that's not obviously

Steve:
It's got a little bit of rust.

Dave:

I like that a lot.

I'm not going to lie,
my favourite part

is the Ford logo
embossed like that.

Says "Jubilee" right there.

Dave: Yup.

Lee: And 1953, are you sure
this isn't a '53?

Narrator: 1953 was
Ford's 50th anniversary.

This is definitely '46.

Narrator:
1946 was also a Golden Jubilee.

50 years after
Charles Brady King drove

the first gasoline powered
vehicle down the streets

of Detroit, Motor City
celebrated its five decades

in the auto industry,
from the first horseless

carriage ride to the place
that put the world on wheels.

The city's giant
festivities became known

as the Automotive
Golden Jubilee.

I kind of like this truck,
to tell the truth.

Dave: It's got that
different look, right?

- Lee: Yeah?
- Dave: Yeah. It's unique.

Lee: Steve, which one are
you leaning towards?

This has got a bit
more curves going on

and this is all complete.

You know, those are what
a lot of the hot-rods are

with the short box

This car's attractive, too.

on it is beautiful.

Nice lookin' old truck.
Looks like it's heavy duty.

My son was interested in them,
and he found out that these

vehicles were
going to get crushed,

and I think sometime
when he gets time,

he's going to try
and refurbish some of these.

So, what are you
thinking on the price?

Well, I was thinking
my son would like to

get around $750 for it.

$500 would work
really well for us.

Just the fact that we've gotta
go halfways across the country

and that doesn't sound much,

but $250 would make
a difference for us.

I think he'd be happy with that,
and he's happy to know that

it's going to good use as well,

Tri-Five refers to the classic

Chevrolet cars of 1955,
'56, and '57,

with the Bel Air
the most popular.

Targeted at
suburban home owners,

GM spent big money redesigning
these budget-family cars.

With sleek lines and tail fins,
they aimed to compete

with the more expensive
Cadillacs.

Few have stood the test of
time like the Chevy Tri-Five,

and the 1957 Bel Air is now
one of the most sought-after

collectibles ever made.

My dad had a '57 two-door post.
Just like this one, actually.

Bel Air, it's the highest tier
of car you can get

in the Chevy in those years.

It's more than an easy sell,

because people fight
over who can get it.

Narrator: And luckily Gilles
looks interested in selling.

Who doesn't love

Like, just the nicest wings
you could ever get.

and the grill and the fenders.

complete than what I'm used to.

On that topic, do you have
any that you would part with?

I've actually got one in here
that's an old 1930 truck cab,

and then all the pieces
are kind of around, but--

The issue of buying a car in
pieces is that you don't know

if all these pieces fit.

This is exciting, because,
I mean, this is why we actually

- have Steve on the team.

Essentially, like,
a lot of the time he's kind of

- just wasted waste.

So, now, it's cool, right?

Like, for me, I get to see
what he's actually here for.

Alright, let's get to work,
Steve.

Narrator: Before they can
put the truck together,

they need to put
the pieces together.

Oh, wow.

There you go.
Good little protector for it.

This is the rear axle
or torque tube.

Yeah. And the frame.

Look at that.

It's like we bought
one of those little kit cars,

but it's a real car.

Narrator: In good condition,
these trucks can fetch $20,000.

This could be a rare
and valuable find eventually.

I see, one, two front fenders.

Running boards.
I think that's it.

There were millions
of Model A's made,

and most of them
were sedans and coupes.

And, so, there wasn't really
a lot of pick-up trucks made,

and that really makes
this right out of the gate

a special vehicle.

Ed: Oh, you got her dug
out of there, fellas.

- Yeah.
- Ed: Good job.

- Can we do it right here?
- Sure!

Steve: I've never actually
worked on a Model A pick-up.

Quite honestly, it's always
been sedans and coupes,

and things, something
you'd rat rod or hot rod,

but trucks you don't see much of
and didn't survive really,

and they're really a cool thing,

because this was the first era
of trucks.

It's a unique vehicle
to fix up and get going.

Let's just start with the frame.
Axles, tires.

Lee: Okay.

And then we'll grab
the box and the cab.

Lee: Okay.

Steve: Obviously,
this is driver's side.

Alright, let's go rear axle.

(grunting)

but the truck's a long way off.

So, if we lock these axles in,
then we can start adding

all the pieces on.

We can start wiring it up.

on finding all of our pieces.

Oh, you mean you don't, uh,

the car together?

this car came from.

Kind of nice, though, right?

This does seem like
an us kind of vehicle.

With the axle together,

time to place the cab.

Steve: Right... there.

secured, tie wire that down.

Narrator:
With the base in place,

there's still one
piece of the puzzle

to be found. The radiator.

I was worried.
This was, like, the last piece.

of this vehicle.

Narrator: But the job is
taking longer than anticipated.

We don't have all day
to get this thing done.

We need to just get
all these pieces together

and get out of here
before we run out of time.

Who'd have thought a socket set
and a whole baler of tie wire

could put a car together?

And also it's cool seeing you
right in your element, right?

He has a truck he'll sell them,
but it's in pieces.

Wow, this place is like,

Steve: Imagine if we were

We're close. Get the hood on,
get it lined up.

And I'll come give you
a hand with the fenders.

Starting to realize that
these things aren't that hard

to put together.
I was all nervous and stuff.

Narrator: Putting the truck
together with wire is fast...

Lee: Okay, straighten these
wheels for a second.

Narrator:
...but not very secure.

(laughing)

Want me to work
on the back?

touching what I see.

This calls
for double tie wire.

(chuckling)

The bolts come later
when all the pieces are on

and we've bought it.

Lee: Son, you want to build

and restore it together.

Narrator:

as opposed to
the sort of old, like,

piecing together the truck,
the others are searching

the shoreline of the Kreger
fishing territory,

hunting for the abandoned
fishery buildings,

but after the flooding,
it's not easy.

Matt: I don't think I've ever
hunted cars from a boat before.

Wow, the high water's really
messed up the banks, eh?

It's gotta be, like,
three, four feet high.

Jess: Yeah.

Matt:
It's hard to even make it out.

It looks totally
different than the map.

This has got to be
the pier.

- Matt: Totally--
- Jess: Guys, is that it?!

Dave:
That's definitely a Mustang.

Jess: Sager, these levels are
all over the place

- for water level.

and just head to that concrete

Narrator: Safely on dry land,
Matt and Dave are desperate

to discover if this
car can be saved.

of muscle car across
the board.

man stepped on the moon,

but on Earth,
it was all about muscle.

Muscle cars, a term for
most two-door sports coupes,

were built for speed.

During the late-1960s, car
manufacturers battled

to produce the coolest and
fastest muscle cars,

and in 1969, they peaked,

because in 1970,
President Nixon created

the US Environmental
Protection Agency,

which limited emissions and
weakened these cars' muscles.

1969 may have been
a giant leap for mankind,

but with their sleek, timeless
designs and fast engines,

it was a monumental
year for cars.

As a result of the fallout
after 1970 and beyond,

it entombed 1969 as the most
iconic sought-after

Narrator: Now, they're hoping
for a break to find the owner.

And why is it in a lake?

It's not normally in the lake,
but the lake water come up

So, now it's there.

I have another '70 Mustang.

If this ice stays
this high 'til spring,

you know what the ice
is going to do to it.

- Ice is gonna destroy it.
- Both: Yup.

The lake is up six feet
or eight feet more

than what it's supposed to be.

And that car's in jeopardy,
the car has to be saved.

It has to be taken out now.

If it's forgotten there,
freezes up, it's history.

It's finished.

I've never really thought
about it actually, but...

Dave: I think it's got
potential to be rescued.

Buddy found it
up in Fort Frances

and we towed it to his house,
it sat there for... too long.
