JAMIE: This is a short one,
though.

It's only five miles.

every race is different,

but usually they're
15 to 20 miles or longer.

Every team has, uh,
two runners and a horse.

JAMIE: And one person starts
on the horse

while the other follows
behind on foot.

She's running?

MAX: Right. So Ava will run up
to her horse tied to a tree,

untie the horse,

get on the horse,
then start riding.

Yeah. Then she'll ride up to her partner
who is up the trail now on foot.

Right. Then they'll switch horses
to relieve the one running.

Or they'll just keep going,
passing their partner,

and then tie their horse
further down the trail.

MAX: Then the runner will
reach the horse, hop on...

Repeating the process
over and over again.

It sounds like
a really intense race.

runners think they can handle it

and then once they get out here,
they realize that they can't.
