20 years ago to Los Angeles.

-It was like one of
my first movies, yes.

that movie, you know,

it really was a pivotal moment
for me in my career,

because although the movie
didn't have box office success,

because it got bootlegged it had
a tremendous amount of success

and allowed me
to really kind of take my feet,

place them
in a space of stand-up,

build a rapport
with an audience,

and like grow a fan base.
-Well, people started believing

in you after that,
because they were able to see.

Like I didn't even know who
you were until I saw the movie

and I was like, "Oh, my God,
this guy is amazing."

And you were so much more
handsome at the time,

remember, yeah. And younger.
-Yeah.

-Fresher. But you're
doing great, you know?

Yeah.

-Yeah, no, yeah. Absolutely.

That was weird. I think
we kind of, I think it,

like, I thought you were going
like in the space of compliment,

and then it's like whoo,
it just went down.

when I was younger.

You were younger, 20 years ago?

My question was going to be,
what did that movie do for you?

What did "Soul Plane" do for you
at a point of your career?

-It got me money. Yeah.

Did opportunities come
because of "Soul Plane"?

-I created a lot of friends
there, was amazing,

and also I learned a lot
to be on a set doing a movie,

because it was like
one of my first movies.

Then I worked a couple of times
with Tyler Perry,

so I think yes.

Like I think then
I became part of more movies

that were more for Black people,
Latin people,

that were including us,
so that was a great time for me.

That's what I think
that that movie did for me.

-And you came
from Univision, right?

-Yes.
-I remember you were,

you were very big
in the world of Univision.

How long were you
in that ecosystem?

-Well, I've been working since
I was like 17 years old,

but really in Univision,
I started working

like when I was 22,

and I think
I've never stopped working.

-Really, since 22,
you've been going nonstop.

-Yeah, nonstop.

-And after "Soul Plane,"
what do you feel,

what acted as the big break?

What was the big breaking moment
for Sofia Vergara?

Was it -- It was something
before "Modern Family," was it?

-No, I think the big break
was "Modern Family."

-I mean, I moved
to Los Angeles thinking

if I don't find a job like
in the next six months,

I'm fine. I'll just go back.

And here I am 20 years later.
-Holy shit.

-It's like, I did many
little things here and there.

I did three pilots
that went half seasons,

and then I got -- But ABC
didn't want to let me go.

-Okay.
-So, until they found me

"Modern Family."
-Oh, they knew they had a star.

They knew that we have something
in this individual.

Letting her out of our ecosystem
would be foolish.

Let's find and work hard
to find something.

-They gave me a holding deal

until they found
"Modern Family" for me.

-Holy shit.
-So I didn't even audition.

-How long was
the holding deal for?

-I think it was like
for three years.

-Get out of here!
-Yeah, and it was fantastic --

I mean, it was not fun --

I mean, it was great
'cause I was getting, you know,

but I also,
I wanted to start working.

I wanted to find things,
and they were waiting for me

to find the right thing,
and it was great.

-How many things,
were there things

that just weren't working out,
a lot of auditions,

or just things
that weren't right the fit

over the course
of the three years?

Like, how many things
did you figure out?

-Not over the course of three
years. Like, I moved to LA,

and I think I hit "Modern
Family" like on the 7th year,

so it wasn't that fast.
-Okay.

-In those seven years
I did a lot of,

many auditions
that they told me no,

and many movies, little movies
here and there, little parts.

But the moment
that I did "Modern Family,"

it was like the first week,
that was it.

-You know what "Modern Family"
is like, what I compare that to?

When you talk about
the world of investing, right,

they have these things
that are like lightning bolts

in the bottle,
things that they feel

will only happen
a couple times in a lifetime.

You think about Uber

and the success that Uber had
in the beginning stages.

Well, in television
it's the same,

to be a part of an opportunity

that grows to be a 10-year show.

-Yeah, crazy, 11 years.

-11 years,
11 years of television.

-I don't think that's ever
going to happen again

now in television, because
people want like things fast,

and they want to move on
so fast.

It was like,
it was special for us, yeah.

-I feel like we're in the time
of five seasons

and that's it, right?

Getting past five seasons
is tough.

I think the world
of the 10 seasons was,

that was -- no pun intended,

but when you're talking
about family,

a show that embraces family,

the beauty of that,
you're watching a family grow.

And the shows throughout the
years that have embraced that,

not only do they have success,
but you felt like you were

a part of the lives
of the characters,

and the characters dealt

with a lot of real situations
in real time.

"Modern Family"
did the same thing.

Steve, Steve Levitan, a producer
on that show, phenomenal guy.

When you were in Season 1, 2,
did you guys know?

Did you feel like holy shit,
this is --

-We knew from the first episode.

I mean, it was like crazy,
immediately.

It was like, I mean, the first
and worst season,

we were invited
to every award show.

We were all nominated.
I mean, it was crazy.

I never thought I was
going to be able

to be part of
something like that.

And, you know, to be --
I used to watch Ed O'Neill

when I was in Colombia.
-Insane, insane.

-So it was like
I couldn't believe it.

And I was married to Ed O'Neill.

He was like 20 years older
than me.

I was like, it never --
I'm like oh, my God.

I remember the first time
that they told me

he was going to be my husband,
and I'm like,

"Oh, my God, I'm going to be
stuck with the old guy

in the set for hours.

And it's going to be so boring."
And --

-It was the complete opposite.
-It was complete opposite.

I mean, I'm like,
"What do we have in common?"

You know, "I'm from Colombia,"

and, I mean,
we had such a great time,

him and I on the set every day.
It was fantastic.

-Did you guys, like,
before going into it,

because like you said,
at this point the network

is trying to find
something for you.

They find "Modern Family."
It's going to be you,

it's going to be Ed O'Neill.

Before you got to the place
of table reads, et cetera,

did you have to meet Ed
a couple times?

-No.
-No. It was just showing up.

-We met at the table read.
-Holy shit.

And the chemistry
kicked off like that.

-It was immediate.
It was immediate.

And I was very worried,

because my character
was a younger woman,

an immigrant, and with a kid,

and she sounded like completely
the gold digger.

I mean, I'm like, oh, my God,
I told my manager, it's like,

they're going to hate her,
you know?

But then there was something
that I did with the character

and that Ed helped me do with
the character, that it worked.

And I don't think
anyone you ask thought

that Gloria was not really
in love with Jay.

-Yeah.
-So it was great.

-I think that the beauty
of what you were able to do was,

you were able to bring
a lot of you to --

-You were in "Modern Family."
-Yes, I came, and I did it.

What are you talking about?

I was like the first Black guy
to ever do the show.

-You always talking like that
about you.

Like you're
the first everything.

-I was. I was the first
Black guy to do "Modern Family."

Okay, you guys

I was a neighbor.
You guys don't even know

they had a Black neighbor.
It was me.

Now, granted, I did one episode
because of my schedule.

I couldn't do more,
but that episode was very funny.

to be smart with the money.

Where did the ideas come from
to start these businesses?

I mean, like for you to go
and do the line --

I remember when there was
conversation about your line,

and your line
being available in Kmart,

which I thought
was genius, right?

I was like, holy shit,

to understand
how big the world is,

to understand
that middle America

is the best part of America,

because those are the most
people like responding.

What was it that made you say,
"I want to go in this direction,

and this is what
I'm going to focus on?"

-Well, you know what, that was
even way before "Modern Family,"

so in the Latin market,
I had my job at Univision,

but at that time in the '90s,
I was making money,

but it wasn't really like
mansion money or Corvette money.

No, it was money to survive

and to save for my son's
college education,

and all that. It was okay.

But I always wanted to --
I always wanted more, you know?

I always wanted to create
something for me,

for my son, for my family.

I went from Colombia,
from a lot of problems,

to living in the United States.

I wanted to take care
of all of them,

so I wanted to make money.

I love money.

[ Both laugh ]

-Okay.

-And then so I started
making calendars.

The only thing that I could sell
was really myself, you know,

at that time, 'cause
I was young and fresh.

I started doing like calendars,

like January,
February, all that.

-What? Do -- I'm sorry, January?
Do January again.

-January, February.

-It's the same pose,
just right to left.

You didn't really change.

Yes, I just want
to let you know.

-So one of those,
and I did really good.

-Okay, the calendar ends up
being a big success.

-Yeah, it was a big success.

And so I started realizing
I am the product,

and I can sell myself --
It sounds horrible to say --

-No, it doesn't. You're talking
about your likeness.

-Yes, exactly.
-And at the end of the day,

realizing your worth
and realizing the value

of your likeness
sometimes is overlooked

by a lot of people
in the business.

So you catching this
is dope as hell.

So what started out
as calendars, then became?

-Became more and more stuff,

because for example,
I knew that to be able --

Also, I always had a very
good chemistry with girls,

like with woman fans,
and they would always

since I'm young come to me
when they would meet me

for a picture or something,
was like,

Oh, what perfume
are you wearing?

Oh, with what
do you wash your hair?

Oh, with what is that lipstick?

Oh, where is this outfit?"
And so it's always is like --

-Light bulbs started to go off.
-They're always asking me

so I'm like,
that's why I always wanted

to create all this, like,

I mean, I wanted to be like --

I mean, I wish I was like
some kind of Martha Stewart,

the Latin, or, you know,
it's like --

-You are, though.
-That was always my idea,

my dream.
I mean, I cannot even compare.

-But you -- But you are.

Like you -- Granted,
Martha's success is her success,

but you're talking
about somebody

who's really thriving
in the business of commerce,

like creating products,
selling product,

and successfully
selling more product

and constantly building,
well, you are.

So you don't have to say like,
I want to try.

I think that's
the dopest thing about

your road to monumental success

is that it compounded
past the actress.

And acting isn't going to get us
to the crazy place of wealth.

That's one tier. It's tapping
into the things that you,

that you've done
and that you did.

-But, well, but for example,
I think now when I started,

well, "Modern Family" finished
three years ago,

and I did it for 11 years,
so I mean, 14 years ago,

not as many actresses
had other businesses.

They were just actresses.

You could see one or two
selling something,

but it was not like that.

And because I was coming
from the Latin market,

when I got the fame
with "Modern Family,"

I mean, I knew
I could be a person

for commercials, for example,

and then, you know,

what I thought
that I could bring to the table

to someone was, for example,
if you hire me,

you, in one day of shooting,
you get it in Spanish,

you get it in English.
-Ah. Yes. Okay.

-So why hire Kevin Hart
that can only speak English...

-Hold on.
-...when you can hire

Sofia Vergara in one day...
-What the fuck

is happening, Sofia?

and in English?

when "Modern Family" hit,

I think me and Luis, my manager,

we had the infrastructure
ready to keep working.

Like, I saw the rest
of the cast, for example,

we would have five months off.
We would shoot seven months,

and then five months,

we were off.
-Okay.

-And they would all go
to the five months to relax.

-Vacation, chill.

-And those five months,
I would work, work, work,

work, work. And the main five,
six years of "Modern Family,"

I didn't have like one day off.

I was like working, working,
working, working, working.

And it paid off.
I knew I had the energy,

and I knew -- You never know
in our business.

One day, you're the queen,

then the next day, you say a bad
joke, and you're done forever.

Have you said any bad jokes,
by the way?

-Oh, that's -- I think that's
none of your business, alright?

And that's like --
I think what we need to do

is focus on where we are,
which is great.

-I mean, you're going
to ask me all the questions,

and I cannot ask you

What I love about what you said

The idea of work, work, work,
I think it comes

from understanding what
it's like to not have anything.

-And when you come from a place

that's considered
to be the bottom

or considered to be
a pretty tough environment,

leaving that environment
and having the opportunity

to change, well, you don't want
to look back.

So, the work, work,
work, is engineered

and motivated from that.

I can respect that,
because I understand that.

I come from the same thing.

What -- How bad was it
where you were coming from,

like, when you talk
about Colombia?

-I mean, I grew up in Colombia
in the '80s

and, you know, the '70s
and the '80s.

In the '90s, I went to Miami,
like in the middle of the '90s.

Colombia was a very rough place
because of narco traffic.

And,

you know, my brother was killed
in Colombia in 1996.

I was already one year
in Miami before that.

But Colombia
was a difficult place.

And I moved out of Colombia
because I knew

I wanted something different
for me and for my son.

And it all worked out,
but unfortunately,

like a year later,
that happened to my brother.

And I had a --
I've had a difficult life.

I never usually sit down
to think about it,

but when I talk about it
and I say things that,

situations that I was in
or that happened,

my husband, Joe, is like
"Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

What? What did you just said?"

-Yeah, it's kind of
mind blowing.

-It's like,
"What did you just said?

That who was picked up
in a bag,

in a plastic bag
chopped in little pieces?

Who?" And stuff like that
that I say, like experiences.

And that's when I notice

I did. I have been through
a lot of crazy stuff

that, I mean, I couldn't

because I don't know you

So it was like exhausting.

she's coming in at,

and I need to make sure
on this day, I'm prepared.

And I really, I just,
I didn't know, and I said,

if I don't get lost
in the scene,

I'm not going to be able
to pull it off.

And on the day,

on the actual fucking day,

I tell the director, I said,

"Can you start off close,
and we get it,

and then as we get wide,
we know that we've got it?

Because I don't know
how many times

I'm going to be
able to get it."

-And I said

I have to get lost in the world
of what Alfre does.

how she's going to come in.

And I really waited to see

what Alfre's performance was
in the scene.

Alfre's performance
made me fucking cry.

All of my tears
came from what she did.

Her reaction to her daughter
dying is what made me,

as the husband, cry.
'Cause I was in the hallway,

trying to be strong until
the mother presented herself.

whatever you can

to get to that place.

And it's not that
you're wishing bad on people

to think of the darkest things

We're learning it in real-time.

But after you get in real-time
and you understand it,

I will tell you now,

I know that it's more about
pulling from the actors

or actresses that are around you
to help you understand

the moment, embrace the moment.

And everybody plays
a part in that.

It's not just you
and your performance.

That's where your partners
come into play,

and that's one thing
that I did learn.

And my costars made me
better over the time.

I was talking about
Alfre Woodard there,

but then "The Upside,"

I was with Bryan Cranston
and Nicole Kidman.

Like my serious roles
that I've taken on,

I was surrounded by A-listers
but that were fucking machines.

That's how you learn.
-Yeah, when I was going

to do this role, I am a producer

on "Griselda," on the show.

-And I wanted,

I mean, I made sure
that all the actors --

We speak Spanish and English
at the same time in the show.

And of course,
this is a real-life story.

This is a woman that existed
in Miami and LA.

It was Griselda Blanco,
and so I made sure

that they were the best actors
in Latin America.

And I couldn't let anyone
tell me, oh, let's put this girl

because somebody knows her.
I'm like, no,

I knew I had to surround myself
with the best people.

And that is super important
because --

-How does that make you feel,

knowing that you're creating
opportunities for your people,

your culture, right?
Like from where you come from,

being able to go back and say,
hey, guys, I've made it.

I have this tremendous
amount of success,

but now I want to act
as a bridge,

as a gateway,
to bring more talent through.

Have you thought about that?
Have you processed that?

-Well, I think, I guess,

I didn't used to think
about that that much,

but it was so amazing when
I was able to produce "Griselda"

and be able to make
those decisions, you know,

how I wanted, who I wanted.

It was special,
because you feel like, oh.

And I think for example,

there were, most of the series
is Latin American actors

but there is, it's in English,
and I know this is going to

maybe change the life
of these actors.

-Absolutely.
-And that's super exciting.

One of my cousins is in the
show, too, and she's amazing.

-Good for you.
-She did an amazing job.

-I think that's the bigger
side of winning, right?

-Yes, helping
other people, yeah.

We want the moment.

We want the star.
