By the railroad that crosses Guatemala City,
an area known as La Línea,
work 200 prostitutes who are regularly attacked
and murdered with impunity.
In order to draw attention on their problems and claim their rights,
a group of them formed a soccer team, trained for weeks
and signed up for a local championship.
This is their story.
We should call ourselves
"The Railroad Girls". What do you think?
Not just "Railroad Girls.
It's got to be "The Railroad Hookers Sports Club",
or however you want to say it.
People know we are two-and-a-half dollar whores.
That you're whores and athletes.
Raise your hand if you want "The Railroad Hookers Sports Club".
"The excelling of the Railroad Hookers".
The Railroad Hookers!
The Railroad Hookers!
Up with the hookers, up, up!
No, not "The Hookers". The whole world knows we're whores.
We belong to La Línea, so "The Railroad All-Stars",
we come from the railroad.
Who votes for "The Railroad All-Stars"?
THE RAILROAD ALL-STARS
Mercy!
- Let's go! - I'm coming.
- And the other girls? - There, ahead.
Hi, Mercy, morning. How're you feeling?
We have to be in shape, ladies.
We have to be exotic, erotic and outrageous for this game.
Run, Vilma. You can run, even though you're fat.
When you finish training, you'll be like Barbies.
Stretch those legs, ladies.
- Loosen those muscles - I got mine loose...
But don't lose your femininity, please. Exotic!
Breathe in,
breathe out.
Breathe in,
breathe out... It's the way to relax.
And cause mischief.
Lower down,
find those dimes.
Imagine the client is behind you.
That's it, go for it.
Go forward. Kimberly, kick it!
Go, go.
It's yours...
And you were alone. Just like Ronaldo.
Where are my hookers?
- Goal! - No, that doesn't count.
I stopped because Ana said I was out of bounds.
- Goal. You had to kick the ball. - It was out of bounds.
If you had the ball here and she scored, it's your problem.
When she said it was out, I stopped.
How can that be out?
Any six-year-old kid knows it's not out!
I couldn't possibly say that was out!
If we had organized a demonstration of whores
in front of the Presidential Palace,
nobody would have paid attention.
The idea of a soccer team was
a different way to get their attention,
even if we didn't imagine the huge reaction.
The women who work in La Línea...
JOURNALIST
...are considered the lowest,
not only for being prostitutes,
but also for the sordid place they're in.
People discriminate against them and attack them.
When I learned what they planned,
I had no doubt and went for it.
La Línea isn't only a place where prostitutes work,
it's a kind of plague-stricken ghetto,
a leper's colony in which the human trash of Guatemala live.
It is a place that everyone talks about, but nobody visits...
supposedly.
Even though they charge very little - less than three dollars-
and given the kind of clients who can pay this low price,
many of the women are here for the freedom
of working without pimps,
which affords a certain professional dignity.
Get up, Josua.
Find your brush and wash your face.
Brush your teeth good.
- Good morning, my love. - Morning, baby.
Get up and go buy bread.
I'll put on some coffee.
I'm going to wake up Mario for breakfast
because I've got to go to work.
Hurry up, son, you've got to go to school.
I came to Guatemala 15 years ago.
I came because nobody in El Salvador would help me
and I was pregnant.
I suppose, yes, they feel bad because I work here,
but they know I am doing it for them,
so they won't lack anything.
That's why we are struggling now, to defend our dignity,
this is a job that we do.
We aren't taking anything away from anybody.
What we do is very common.
The difference is that we charge money.
Miriam came down the stairs from her room.
A good night to start her sensual riot.
The path, a line, burns with her self-confident mulatto stride.
The leaves of time
fall like a social mockery
and the stringbean is a stereo that never ceases to play.
But why?
Because she's good, and the other is bad,
same as the old turd. She's his mother.
But that old bitch is bad.
So, she doesn't like her daughter-in-law...
Violent as a cannon pointed directly at your face
Today everybody plays the hard life and I don't know what will happen,
and an older woman conquering youth
and there's an intense story in every personality
Here we can put a black border
and around the collar too.
- What's your number? - Seven.
But your name won't fit on the back: Carolina.
Well, it depends on how the number is placed.
And a little seven?
No. The devil's seven has to be big, so everyone can see.
And black.
I can't say whether people live well in Paris
or like rats in sewers.
Hallucinating day after day, Erick draws his faith
and turning sixteen, searches for the meaning of life,
smoking the calming cigarettes,
breaking too many charms.
Your shoes cost more than a little action.
Good morning, Stephanie.
Good morning, miss Want some condoms?
I've got colored ones and some for seven cents.
I'm going to be an artist.
I'm not a prostitute anymore. I've been out of it for 18 years.
My business now is selling condoms,
washing blankets and work clothes.
Bye, Julie.
I worked at La Línea for 20 years.
I had lots of lovers, turned into a drunkard,
played all night, and a smoker...
During one binge, my lover took out my eye.
Another lover gave me a glass eye,
but I lost it in another binge.
See you later, Siomara.
Good morning, sir. I'm going to be a movie actress.
I have had three children. One they took away
because the father was rich and his family wouldn't accept me.
My second boy was murdered,
I don't know anything of him nor where he was left.
But I am still blessed by my heavenly father,
who is our Lord, our beautiful God, Jesus Christ.
I told Him, "pretty Father,
I want you to give me a big-lipped Indian,
shoeless and ugly,
but one who likes me and whom I love.
I'm a sad drunk
who spends her life
drinking and crying
with a bitter cry this ungrateful love.
The world doesn't understand
that a good woman is
quickly swept away,
miserable life,
awful love.
Doña Ericka, may I come in?
I look in the mirror
and want to break it.
I curse forever
the perverse man
who made me unhappy.
Carlos!
- What happened, my baby? - My love, how are you?
Here's the big-lipped Indian that God gave me.
What are you doing? Washing some clothes.
Here is the disaster, look.
When Hurricane Mitch filled
our old shack with mud
we were evacuated to another shack.
But with the strong downpour last month,
the cinderblock wall washed away and fell on top of the shack.
My eye feels really bad.
It feels like
I am losing my sight, it blurs
I feel like sand in my eye,
I get dizzy, it itches,
it seals shut...
I have a lot of problems with my eye.
I would like to play, but, with this eye, I can't.
Because of the eye and because you're old.
I may be old
but I'm still kicking.
Come in, don't stand there.
My love, here I am.
When my child was six months old,
I had trouble with my step-father.
I was sleeping with my daughter
and felt a man,
someone touching my private parts.
I was raped when I was
between 10 and 11 years old.
My own brother came in
and he abused me whenever he wanted.
I woke up frightened.
When I could see, it was him, feeling me up.
I met Angel,
a boy with whom I lived for 9 or 10 years.
Together we had three beautiful children,
but...
time went by and
he fell in love with my daughter.
They were lovers in my own house.
My sister woke up and asked me what had happened.
I told her.
We began to shout at him
and my mother woke up.
I worked and studied.
By myself, I paid for classes in night school
because I didn't want to be ignorant.
I didn't want to be a whore or a gang member.
I wanted to be a good woman, help my daughter get ahead,
but to my disgrace it wasn't to be.
They were expecting a baby and they left
and took my two children,
the seven-year-old boy and the four-year-old girl.
I wanted to cut off his head with a machete.
Once again, she threw me out of the house.
But she wouldn't let me take my daughter.
I begged her to please let me have her.
She said no because I was a liar
and that my step-father wasn't capable of raping me.
And that I was an addict,
which was a lie, because I didn't smoke or drink.
I tried to poison myself.
Without my daughter, I didn't want to live.
This is my daughter, Sheila.
She's nine
and is in second grade.
Like her mom, she has lots of boyfriends
and she's lazy when it comes to studies.
He's my nephew, Jeffrey
and this dirty Indian is my mate. Her name is Lupe.
Hello, my love.
I met her in a disco.
We met in a disco
for gays and lesbians.
That's where I met her. I gave her a kiss and well...
she fell in love with me.
She had a spot and I said,
"Come here, my love, I'll get rid of that spot,"
so she froze an stuck out her lips, so I had to kiss her.
That's how our love started.
And now we love one another, isn't that right?
Yes, my love.
When you get here change places and all of you hookers, back there.
One, two...
Change, change.
Froggie style.
When my family found out I was a whore...
My sister is religious and you know what she did?
She prayed for me because she said the devil had gotten into me.
But you know how he got into her?
Lower your chin, please. Don't move, relax.
Don't do that, madam.
- How many eyes do you have? - Just one.
And why don't you take care of it? Why don't you listen? Ok, ready.
If you do not see clearly, don't be afraid, madam.
Good day, Marimar.
It's about our demands as prostitutes.
We are not pleading just for the team members,
but for all of us in general.
It's about the custody of our children,
it's about being accepted by society,
that our work isn't so discriminated.
Let's do it with the pen's ink.
The only thing is, we'll end up without a pen.
Thanks. You're the nicest woman in La Línea.
- Anytime. You know that I agree. - Thank you.
Is this Futeca zone 14?
We have a team inscribed in category C
that is to play on Saturday morning,
it's called the All-Stars.
I'd like to know against whom and when we are playing.
Can you tell me?
The game is at 11.
And our opponent?
Ice Devils... that's frightening.
I feel happy.
It's my only family, my only supporters now for the game.
How are you going to support me? What are you going to shout?
We're for Mama! We're for Mama!
How?
We're for Mama! We're for Mama!
Now we are a team.
We can't criticize our mates' playing.
No more insults.
Not only on the field.
- Enough criticizing among ourselves. - And offending.
If I see one of you open, I'll pass you the ball.
I'll tell you, I'm nervous.
We are all nervous.
Believe me. I have confidence in all of you.
The important thing is
that you have confidence in yourselves.
Thank You, Lord,
for giving us this day, heavenly Father.
In this day we thank You
and ask for Your help
so that you can enlighten us.
For the moment, we are a little nervous,
but we have confidence in You,
in that You will help us and illuminate us the whole time.
Thank You, Lord.
Lots of spirit, everybody.
There's nobody who can't do it!
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...
Everybody have your ID? Did everybody pee?
Glamour first, my love.
We were all so looking forward to this day.
Most had upset stomachs
the day before.
I thought,
"What are we going to do at Futeca?"
We will play the fool.
We were all nervous, really anxious
because the question was, "Would they even let us play?"
I felt very happy,
but afterwards came my "unfaithfulness"...
my unhappiness.
The puppy dance!
The puppy dance!
If they tell you bad things about me,
Send them off flying and tell them it wasn't me!
What pretty love!
What pretty moon!
What pretty sun!
Here we are live from Futeca
bringing you the Railroad All-Stars game.
They look good in their red and black uniforms, don't they?
They are all charming, especially the captain, Valeria.
There is the frizzy haired All-Star preparing to put the ball in play,
Carol hesitates and ends up losing the ball.
But they're back, fighting with great spirit,
there is a rebound and goal!
Kim couldn't prevent the ball from getting through to the goal area.
The babies now lead the game.
Go Erica!
They go for the center but rival Beba is in control and again Valeria,
it can happen here, quick rebound. Vilma shoots!
- And her shot was nearly a goal! - Cover them, one on each woman.
Let's go, Mercy, shoot the ball.
The Babes are playing well but here comes the Tank!
They're playing to her, she sets the ball, shoots and goal!
The rival team is trying to score
but Carolina, the goalkeeper, is doing a great job.
Here comes another attack by the Railroad All-Stars, all alone,
and cannot do more than stretch her leg,
she couldn't score, Gabriel.
What power from the moment she takes the ball!
The throw in favor of the All-Stars, when there's a shot and goal!
Goal by La China!
Right from the opposite corner. What a strong kick!
What a leg, Gabriel!
The first half ends
and the score is
two goals to one in favour of the Babes.
Good day. Can you tell us your name?
My name is Blanca Portillo, a.k.a. Valeria.
Don't be passive, guys.
Throw your bodies into it. Don't give up.
What we are asking is that society treat us equally.
Before our being prostitutes,
we're women and mothers.
What are your demands?
Protection against violence.
That the authorities stop harassing
immigrant women as much as they do.
Fine. It's our first experience, don't feel disappointed.
We're playing fine.
The second half is under way.
Guess how many people are barefoot today
because they lent their sneakers for the game?
Long pass and the Babes are controlling the ball in the center
when Carol attacks, she's carrying the ball.
Vilma's putting pressure but she can't shoot.
All-Stars!
The referee blows the whistle!
There's a pretty opportunity for the All-Stars to tie the score.
Its Carol behind the ball,
she places the ball carefully because she wants to make the most of it.
Come on! Come on!
She's got the distance, shoots, goal!
Goal by the The Railroad All-Stars,
and the audience explodes.
They're in for the Railroad All-Stars
who just tied the game and want more.
I felt
like I was hallucinating.
I remembered when I sniffed glue
and saw colored lights in my craziness.
And I imagined that,
like a roach in the middle of lots of people, but big!
Here is Maribel, "La China" who stretches her leg, stealing the ball,
La China had to throw
and the goalkeeper stops the ball.
The All-Stars look better,
but here comes the answer,
careful with that defense and she loses the ball.
Time out!
Mercy!
What's happening? You're not covering.
All-Stars we want another goal!
Once again the Babes,
and they add to their advantage.
And the referee calls the game over.
The All-Stars fans
celebrate eagerly
with enormous satisfaction for what's been done here.
They all leave the game happy and satisfied.
Yeah, whores, so what?
At least, they weren't very aggressive.
They are good people. I liked them.
The one that knocked me down helped me get up and everything.
When they discovered it was a team of prostitutes,
some of the opponent's parents
went to Futeca's office
to scream to high heaven
and demand that the team be disqualified for health reasons.
Almost immediately, pressure was directed
at the media and at us.
As you just saw, they won't let us tape.
Their fans were shouting dirty words and there were children around.
Even other teams here said the same thing to me.
The only thing I heard was, "All-Stars win!".
But it's always the same -the law of those who have more power.
The law of those who have more money.
It doesn't matter, there are other fields to play.
No, but this can't be.
It's for this reason that we got into this
and we aren't going to stop now.
Whether you like it or not, we're going to continue.
The truth is that among all of us
we have to decide if she continues or not.
We have to give her the opportunity to put forth a better effort.
How were we at the start? Two-two.
And if we continue like this, where are we headed?
But remember the first two goals were against Kimberly, not me.
- But the last three were against you. - You're always saying you're sick.
So you'd better not play.
Since you want to be on the team,
find someone who can help you be a better goalkeeper.
When the girl came with the ball,
you should have thrown yourself.
But she can't dive because of her breasts.
Then, if she has bad nerves and sore tits,
she'd be better off not playing.
We shouldn't humiliate anybody.
Remember what we talked about before.
But look.
The tits are here and the ball got by down here.
Don't tell me she couldn't bend over.
But as we agreed,
we are going to keep training her.
I'm leaving.
Good evening, this is Renato Martín.
Here are the headlines from Saturday, the 18th of September
prostitutes from La Línea demand
respect for their rights and dignity.
An unusual female soccer game
took place today
- a high school team against the Railroad All-Stars.
The game was accepted by some,
but only some.
It's not that we didn't want them to play,
otherwise we wouldn't have inscribed them.
And now, are you going to eliminate them from the championship?
I don't know.
The directors of the sports center where the game was played
declared that, before the game,
they were ignorant of the nature of the Railway All-Stars
and that right after the end of the game
they decided to remove the team from the tournament.
The pressure started after the game.
The manager of Futeca, and some of the parents called me,
partly to put pressure
and find out about the situation.
I'm sorry, you're not authorized to be taping here.
This is private property.
- We came to... - I don't care.
You guys call the police.
This is private property and you've got to leave now.
EDUARDO NAVAS (OFF SCREEN) MANAGER OF FUTECA
Leave now.
Call the police.
We're talking like civilized people.
Just leave, you've got no business in here.
We paid. We have a receipt.
I've nothing to say.
Please, leave. This is private property.
Let's go, Andrés.
Nobody's looking for problems.
He threw us out like we were animals.
We behaved correctly.
They swear they come from elegant schools,
but they didn't show the least education to us.
And now what?
We think this people are narrow-minded
because, during the game, they yelled
that we could transmit AIDS with our sweat
when anyone who has studied knows that isn't the case.
But with or without Futeca, we are going to keep on playing.
We invite any team wanting to play against us
and we will show that,
yes, we can play.
You know what it is to receive a client?
From the moment they ask "how much," you're already feeling bad.
This is not easy. It's a lie that it's the easy life.
I may be a prostitute but that doesn't mean I m ignorant.
A teammate fell
and scraped her knee
and people asked to change the turf
because her AIDS contaminated blood had been left there.
We all decided that Lupe was to join us
as our new goalie.
All agreed?
Welcome to the team, Lupe.
Any comments, for or against?
Just... welcome.
Her woman.
Play, play.
Keep it up; keep it in bounds.
A little bit over there.
- More over me? - Yes.
A little more.
A tiny bit. Here.
Baby,
since I had sauce for you in my heart
I thought I could be your digestion.
If you swallowed me in without a thought.
Baby,
the day turns grey and this pain grows.
It does bother me that my mother was a prostitute
and now my woman is in it too,
but what can I do, if there's no work here.
I feel like kicking the door down.
But what can one do...
I help a bit, but she helps more,
because when I'm not working
she pays for the room, the food,
the school... everything.
It doesn't bother me that mama works at La Línea.
His classmates, most of them know what I do for a living,
and the teachers know too.
Some ask, "what does your mother charge?" I always punch them.
I tell the teacher and she always punishes them.
For a month.
I feel like they want to kill my mama or something.
I know I'm a sinner
and I accept it.
I know I sin every minute here.
We all sin, even with our thoughts.
God means a lot to me because,
from my earliest memories, I have suffered a lot.
Here, in the crappy La Línea,
you see tremendous things
that leave you scared shitless, that terrify you.
If you lower your eyes and are fucked.
His name is Serafín.
He's a month old, no, a year old.
When a woman, or a man are born from their mothers womb...
Are you coming in?
Come in, without obligation.
Turn around.
The only thing is I don't give oral sex.
- Can you handle me? - For how long?
A short time.
Let me tell you that you were not born for this.
No, it is the enemy of mankind, Satan...
I asked, "Why do children play and I don't?".
But nobody answered.
One day a little girl gave me a doll
and I felt happy.
And I said to my mother, "Mama look at me playing".
She said, "No, we have to work".
What I did was hide the doll under the pillow
and I played at night.
But the filthy spirit that comes out of them
seduces them...
A whore is like trash to many people,
but for not me, it is an honor to be a prostitute.
Why? Because I don't hurt anybody.
On the contrary, that prevents so many youngsters from being raped.
People are attracted to vice.
There are women who get into prostitution,
into fornication, into murder,
into drugs...
We went out for a walk...
But Lupe's former lover for ten years
came in where we were.
We started to talk, we had a fight,
and it ended.
The police almost arrested us.
So I had to give them money
I had just borrowed
so they wouldn't lock up my brother-in-law.
The police said: "I heard your sister say you are a whore.
Let's settle this." I entered the mobile office.
There were 4 guys. I had just bribed them over $100 and they all still wanted sex.
I am knocked out.
I feel really sad.
I feel that things will get much better.
How could she talk about her relationship
with the other girl in front of me?
- Did you hear us? - I heard you talking about that.
I wasn't talking anything.
She could have told her,
"Excuse me but here is this shit" or "my woman"
or however she wants to call me.
But this is the second time that it's happened, Chema,
I don't go to places with her that I visited with Angel.
You understand? Precisely,
because I always give her her proper place.
She keeps saying she's going back with him,
I can't force her to be with me.
I'm not going to grab her neck to force her to stay. What for?
She hadn't told you that, did she?
She smacked me twice.
- Let me see the marks. - Talk to your mother, you fucking bitch.
You hit me first, then I grabbed your neck
- and we began to fight, or not? - Yes.
Ok. So that's how it happened.
But now she says she's going back with...
With whom?
Remember. Why don't you talk about that?
I don't know.
Ok, stay with him, you piece of shit.
She's going, let her go.
So what?
I wasn't born with her.
1:15 AM here and 5:15 PM in Guatemala.
GRAN VÍA, MADRID, SPAIN
I want to transport you to Guatemala. Hello. Are you Kimberly?
The whole world knows by now...
SOCCER RADIO REPORTER
...that they won't let you play.
Do you know teams in the Spanish league?
I like Barcelona, mostly for the players.
I'm for Atleti.
But if you saw Fernando Torres, you'd fall in love with him.
He is very tall.
Yes, he's tall.
Yes, I've seen how tall and handsome he is.
Have you thought about playing an exhibition match here in Spain?
- Wow, that's really far way! - No, you just have to take a...
Would we play against Spanish prostitutes?
Well, yes, or...
we'd look for someone. You wouldn't play for the Bernabeu Trophy,
but some other tournament...
I just call to tell you I'm not doing so badly
and as time has passed I've learned to deal
with bad feelings that hurt when they're inside.
I discovered that I was gay,
like, when I was eleven.
I had to figure out
how to be a man in the house
and a homo in the street.
My mother was told, but she didn't want to believe it.
Because I was a very good student.
She took me to psychologists, special for students,
but...
I was a homosexual from my roots and couldn't change,
the psychologist didn't change me.
I was in therapy for eight months.
I couldn't change, I couldn't, I didn't want to.
They threw me out of the house
just before high school graduation.
And without my parents help, what was I to do?
I prostituted myself at night
and studied during the day.
I did my homework in hotels.
When the clients left, I stayed there studying.
I graduated with pure force between sodomies.
Girls, how are you?
All of us here have extramarital relationships.
We have our mate and other lovers.
Not me, speak for yourself.
Oh, please...
- Me never - Don't bullshit, I know your story.
You never saw me coming and going in hotels like I was a whore.
I tell you, he was kissing your husband.
- Who? - Kimberly.
- Me? - The one with the orange shirt!
Oh, yes.
The cop, but that was a slip.
For me, love is
something you can't do without.
If there's no love in your life
or you've never loved,
you're lost.
Love brings people together
so it's important in society,
with whomever, however, between men, between women,
between men and women, whatever, but you have to have love some day.
Love is something wonderful
and I've fully experienced it.
We grew up naked and together we made love tremble and we learned,
like a hard blow to the soul, the way life usually teaches.
NATIONAL CIVIL POLICE STATION N-12
Reporting to all the country
from the National Civil Police headquarters
another game of the Railroad All-Stars
after the unfortunate incident at Futeca.
The idea here is to share with these people.
I hope none of you will get hurt and...
This isn't about fighting, but about sharing.
We're ready for an interesting contest
between two important professional groups:
the police and the Railroad All-Stars.
The police are rivals for us
not because of their play,
but because they've come to lower us
and now we can even accounts.
Even if we fall here, I don't give a shit.
They'll have to use up all their energy in this game
at the National Police's home field
with all the support the All-Stars are getting.
- Carol, what a pass! - Attack! Attack!
There she comes, Concepción dominates, shoots... Goal!
She shot it
through Lupe's legs, who couldn't do anything.
It's the first goal of the game.
The police commissioner seems to know some of the All-Stars.
And he's thinking:
"They sure look different in their soccer uniforms".
She's coming from the right
La China is fighting well for it,
always on time to defend. The ball is for the All-Stars.
The support is on Vilma, who passes to Concepción, she shoots,
- and Lupe stops it. - That's my Lupita!
She plays it from the side. Great, Valeria!
Great play, elegant, she keeps fighting.
Referee, someone lifted her leg too high.
The All-Stars are coming back, they are reacting.
Valeria has the ball, shoots, Goal!
What do you know!
Who didn't believe it?
It took them a few minutes but they got it! Great, Valeria!
"I told you I won't let you pass", and she didn't.
The whistle blows
ending the first half, tied 1 to 1.
The All-Stars celebrate,
it meant some effort at first
but they are accommodating and Valeria scored.
How did you feel during this encounter with the All-Stars?
Good day.
I appreciate their wanting to play with us
because we are also an institution far from society.
- Now we are two. - And we thank them.
What do you think of policewomen,
now that you have confronted them in soccer?
I liked what she said, that society doesn't accept them.
It's the same with us. That's why we are playing,
fighting to be accepted by society.
The second half is about to start, one to one is the score.
Cholita, like her mates call her, is moving the ball.
There goes Cholita again,
she looks for Concepción, who shoots, but it's out.
Here's Lupe.
What a tremendous save by Lupe!
The shot came from very close, she covered the first one,
then came the coup de grace and Lupe covered the shot again.
They keep on trying to score after all the changes made
in this second half of the game, but they haven't succeeded yet.
That's the way, Lupe!
What heat! What pressure!
And look how the All-Stars defend themselves.
Come on, Stars, don't be so cautious,
they aren't in their police uniforms.
Goal!
Concepción attacks and scores.
The celebration is major
because it's win or get arrested.
Now it's two to one. What a shot!
The ball bounced in off the post.
Valeria asks for the ball, Vilma too, but the distance is not enough.
They play for La China, she loses it,
Brenda comes, here's the shot
and what a goal!
How painful for the All-Stars, another goal
just when they were trying to tie the game.
The referee blows the whistle. Game over.
And the police won.
He was beating me when you got rid of him.
I just remember he had me by the hair,
but I don't remember the rest.
Abuse doesn't just take place at work
or with the cops or strangers,
but also with your mate.
She's not a nun, not a secretary,
so why doesn't Beto get jealous
when the men come in with her?
So much wasted time for nothing.
Sometimes he hits me, he mistreats me,
but it's not for people to witness it.
He tells me he doesn't want
people to witness this.
The thing is she needs a lesson.
She makes me mad, causing lots of problems
with many people without reason.
If you let things slide, it's the same.
You have to have a little discipline.
- So you're not coming on the tour. - No.
"And what now? There's nothing,
not even love, Carola", I tell her.
But she goes, "No, Beto...
He's going to go to jail, he'll tell you again that he loves you,
that he'll be faithful..."
One goes overboard for a man
and, in the end, there's nothing.
Men leave you and on top of that they say:
"You see, I found a better woman than you".
All I have in mind is
to leave him one day and go far away.
I'm up to here.
Too much mistreatment,
jealousies, infidelities.
I have a boyfriend, he's a gang member.
They locked him up and I've been trying to free him.
We have a pretty relationship.
We have lived together for years.
If something happens to me, he makes sure nobody touches me.
He takes care of me like I was the light of his life.
I love him very much,
but I know if he stays in the gang,
one day someone will come and say,
"Valeria, El Vago is dead".
She's given me support. She's given me love.
I don't like what she is doing now.
But since I am in here,
I pretend not to know, you understand?
Now I don't even remember
all the suffering I've been through.
He cares for me, he protects me.
Love for me is my children and my husband.
Love is a great trip, man.
We're not going to be bored on this trip, nor ever,
we don't have a right to be bored.
We must always stay in harmony,
vital, transmitting energy
from our ears and out of our bodies.
We have to give, especially us,
so let's give everything.
Let's be quiet, submissive and let's give our all.
That's how we men are, we gentlemen... Givers.
One of the institutions
that supported us unconditionally from the beginning
is the company Guatemalatravels.net, an Internet site,
that came to us
and offered to sponsor this tour.
We decided to support these women
because we believe that
they deserve a chance.
And what Guatemalatravels.net wants
is to show them the Guatemala that they haven't seen.
They don't know that Guatemala.
They don't know the Guatemala
of the indigenous, of Tikal,
the beauty of the Caribbean, so we are going to show them.
Yes, I forgave her because
I was negative at the start,
but now that I've forgiven her things have changed
and I'm feeling more positive.
He said that if he didn't come, I couldn't go either.
I feel really enthusiastic about the trip
and I think we are going to win,
because all of us think the same.
- We're going to win. - But don't open your mouth too much.
And I feel...
I can't talk with my mouth full.
Enough, Chema, the interview is over.
Not ready yet we trained for only two minutes.
Let's continue enjoying the show.
On the stage, Carla,
a member of the Oasis Night Club Soccer Team.
Remember, on Saturday at 9:00 AM,
on the soccer field of Amatitlan,
the soccer game between the girls of the Oasis Night Club
and the Railroad All-Stars.
I came from far-off lands
to pray to Brother Simon,
The girls from the Oasis will win!
People come from all over
to visit your sacred temple.
Mexicans and Salvadorians,
likewise come those Hondurans.
Among flowers and happy hymns,
all the world kneels to pray.
Our Father, who art in Heaven
I come to you to sing,
miraculous Saint Simon
I give you all my soul.
We are coming to you live, directly
from the Amatitlan Municipal Fields.
She came here with all her efforts to play,
but again Heidi couldn't wait to shoot.
That's it. Out!
Watch out Heidi has the ball again, three girls try to cover up.
Heidi dribbles, shoots and goal!
First goal for the Oasis Club.
A nice approach by the All-Stars.
For me, she's a man.
Did I say "man"? You said "man".
Well, whatever... there's a counterattack.
We have to keep an eye on her.
She can move, she's good, see!
Nancy lost it to Heidi,
who takes the ball, she carries it, he's dancing,
Valeria has to run, here she is, shoulder to shoulder,
but she wins it, shoots and goal!
Goal for the Oasis!
She scored three goals all by herself.
She scored all the goals.
She's the only one playing. Look at the rest.
And look, they're not moving from there.
No, she's the one moving it.
We barely started the season.
It's the second game for the All-Stars
and it's Valeria, shoots and goal!
What a goal, what power.
The referee blows his whistle to end the first half.
They can't take anymore, we must attack.
The one to cover is number eight.
And the number five!
Number five won't play now.
Number five is not a hooker from the Oasis.
At least, not one from the Oasis. Perhaps from somewhere else.
The Railroad All-Stars are losing,
but they'll try to recover.
Here comes Maribel,
come on... Oh!
"That's for invading my territory," says La China.
She gets a yellow card.
The referee says this game is over.
Remember that next Saturday, October 4th,
the Railroad All-Stars will play in Flores, Petén.
The girl who scored the first three goals
isn't like us and we came out even.
You wanted to assure yourselves some goals
and that's not right.
We should be even.
You guys told us to take out the first girl.
We did. We're clean.
I won't accept that cheating.
The most popular soccer team of the moment gains more attention,
but continues without a win.
They created controversy
and drew attention toward their daily discrimination.
On Wednesday we play in Villa Canales,
Saturday in Livingston, and Monday in Petén.
Since we first met, we said we would have a good trip.
Happy...
with the small loss we had in Amatitlan.
But they'd better be careful in Livingston because the All-Stars
come with more desire and experience.
Oh, how beautiful,
look at this view, my friends!
Mine looks more exotic to me.
Oh, how pretty!
From here we're going to see men!
- And where are your men? - There, in the pool.
They also wash your clothes here,
but they charge three dollars each pant.
Oh, shit!
1.50 for a bra,
too bad you don't use any handkerchiefs, they're the cheapest.
If you're thirsty don't drink those water bottles,
they'll charge a fortune.
Everything is expensive?
Dear, the only thing they don't charge for is fucking.
My entire life!
When I die I'm gonna stay like this, look...
We must enjoy ourselves while we're here 'cause once were dead, what the hell!
Someone fuck me for the last time. Asleep, already dead.
She says that once she's dead
she's gonna stay in the coffin like this
so she can have her last fuck.
When the ball comes,
don't stop it and don't think
with which leg you'll be shooting.
Watch that the ball coming and kick it forward, hard.
Because while you're standing there thinking
someone comes and takes the ball away from you.
Don't be worried.
One more month and he walks out for lack of evidence.
I worked with a lawyer
and I delivered all the paperwork.
So I can tell you,
there won't be any sentence.
You can sit quiet
and contented
and be absolutely sure that that's the way it's going to be.
I'm lost and don't know
how I got here.
I'm beaten and my destiny is
to suffer until the end.
Here in my chest
I bring the regret
for the way you treated me,
my soul aches,
I live in the anguish of your way of thinking.
Today I regret having left you
alone and without me.
I have suffered so much that even on my way
I think of you.
I'm a wandering hobo alone in the world without you.
I don't know if we will kiss again
and like a baby I cry
because I have lost you.
Big female soccer game:
Livingston versus
the Railroad All-Stars. Don't miss it!
- For Valeria, take her place. - I'll substitute Maribel.
Very well, my All-Stars...
Smashed-Stars, we are.
Just a little, a little, but it's nothing.
Bless you!
I argued with Lupe again. She never acknowledges my place.
We're walking together and she's eyeing other women.
At the game yesterday,
they were flirting with her and she didn't mention I am her woman.
This time is for real, I can't stand it anymore.
Sometimes I don't know if I should regret my relationship with her
or just continue with it.
The nigger was flirting with me, but I didn't pay any attention.
She's really jealous.
If any woman looks at me, she gets jealous.
I get mad.
- That's too much! - Enough!
I drank a lot, but I'm not drunk enough yet.
I want my heart to hurt.
My mother-in-law is the same.
She's got a partner too.
I thought it was a nice relationship,
I thought women would understand one another, but it's not the case,
they fight a lot.
Their relationship has to be in bed or in the street,
but so it doesn't affect the team
because Lupe doesn't stop goals because she's angry.
Vilma doesn't want to play because they are fighting.
Forward, this is where the excitement starts.
One wonders,
"What was that?"
These were
the kings' houses.
The Gods didn't live very comfortably!
I'm happy I was born in the 20th century.
Come on, were about to enter La Plata.
That's it, smile.
There were two types of sacrifice,
one was to spread blood.
They would hit your brain
with a stone sacrificial axe
and the blood sprayed out.
How did the Mayans screw?
Good question. They used all the holes,
even the ears.
- And did they use condoms? - No. They took their chances.
- And were there whores? - Yes, for sure.
And what did they get paid with?
Not with money,
there were objects they interchanged.
The whores didn't have a specific place where they were?
No, but you know what they had?
There were special shacks to get them pregnant.
- But any woman, not whores. - They weren't called like that.
So they were all whores.
Because they gave a piece of ass to anybody.
Yes man!
WELCOME TO ISLA DE FLORES
As the minutes go by the temperature climbs
to where the girls like it, hot, hot.
The mayor put aside his duties
because this is not your usual game.
Strong kick!
The game continues and here comes Vilma,
the strongest one and... goal!
What happiness, they embrace!
the Railroad All-Stars scored,
even the press jumped into the field!
What a goal!
Incredible right kick, the goalkeeper had nothing to do!
It's 1-0 after this great kick.
She carefully places the ball and is about to kick,
the ball bounces on a chest.
A hand and it's a penalty.
She's ready to shoot
and Lupe blocks it!
Great, Lupe!
Thrown by player Stacey
and eventually blocked by Lupe, who,
together with Vilma has become the hero of the first half
because the All-Stars are winning.
The ball is moving, second half. Beautiful!
La China arrives!
She's running up with the ball, passes it,
she kicks it
and it's out of the stadium.
What a kick!
Carol runs and this could be it, Carol kicks it and goal,
what a goal!
It's almost finished,
the All-Stars win 2-0.
It's over, the game's over.
Look at them so happy!
The Railroad All-Stars won the game 2-0.
How does your first victory feel
after all these games, Vilma?
I feel great, like a real star.
- You're happy, right? - Yes.
This is like a dream for all of us.
An unforgettable experience
that I'll remember forever.
I never knew any of this.
I saw it on TV
and said, "One day I'll go to those ruins"
and Beto told me, "Not even in your dreams."
It's 7:45 in the morning
and our number is 55771131.
We're with the Railroad All-Stars.
Do you have another game
scheduled in Guatemala?
We have an invitation to play
with some sister prostitutes in El Salvador.
Look, I'm calling because I think it's insane
for these people to represent Guatemala.
There are plenty of women and great players
and I think it's preposterous!
I heard about Futeca and it seemed a bit tasteless to me,
they have their right, but everything in its place.
It's bad because they aren't getting
any respect for themselves
and they are giving Guatemala a bad name.
What I know about this movement worries me.
I am totally against these people
with doubtful reputation
and moral values
representing such a dignified nation.
I don't know of any law prohibiting
a prostitute from waving the Guatemalan flag
or any other flag.
There are lots of groups
against giving this much relevance to the issue of prostitution
and it's these groups that oppose the idea
of prostitutes representing Guatemala abroad.
And I think that
these pressures affected this company
and they won't support us anymore.
We have to discuss what to do.
No, we are not leaving the project.
We will continue to help the Railroad All-Stars.
The only thing is we always talked about a national tour,
not about international competition.
Here we were successful,
we travelled, we had fun
and we won our first game.
We can ask for a loan and pay it back.
We can make an iron, cutlery...
Or have a raffle.
What if each of us sells
a television set or an iron,
whatever we have?
I can make two dresses and raffle them off.
But two is not enough!
But everybody has to collaborate a little, right?
First thing we have to do is to budget the trip
to know how much we need to gather.
The best thing is to go, play, and return.
And the hotel and food and all?
That's why I said go, play and return.
But going and coming back in one day is a killer.
But where will we play?
We cant afford luxuries.
And if we stay in the house
of one of us who are from there?
Old man, here are your daughters.
We're raffling a lamp, a dress...
A coffee machine.
Because we don't have a sponsor
and we want to play in Salvador.
Remember that we are with you.
Put your heart, soul and life, and win this game at El Salvador.
The players on both teams were prostitutes.
Now, let me explain.
Several weeks ago this women's movement was born in Guatemala
and now it has spread.
The players on the Salvadorian team
work in a high risk area of the capital.
This time they changed their heels for sneakers,
their skirts for gym trunks,
and their make-up for a soccer ball.
I'm so nervous, you'd think it was my house.
Good afternoon!
- How come you didn't tell me? - She's my mother.
You couldn't tell she's your mom!
You can hardly tell.
This is my littlest, Blackie,
who I told you about, Vilma.
He's my little fatty who never stops eating.
And she is Josefine, my daughter.
And how are your studies?
Math bad.
I got A+ and A.
Turn that off, turn down the volume.
Turn down the volume.
How are you doing now?
- Good. - Good, you've been behaving in school?
- And Douglas, how's he doing? - Two F's and two B's.
I took my kids to school.
I didn't know how to tell my mother,
"Look, I'm going to work in Guatemala",
because my mother didn't know.
So at 2:00 PM
I went to pick up my kids, made lunch, I fed them
and then told them to take care of themselves.
So you haven't been doing your homework?
How many times have I told you
that you have to study to get good grades?
Stop thinking about the TV and the rest.
You won't earn your living by playing.
My daughter asked, "Mommy, where are you going?"
"I'm going to Guatemala. Don't be sad, I'll be back in a month.
I'll bring toys
and money,
it will all be different from how it is now,
when you ask me for candy and I can't afford it."
I cried because I thought I'd never return home.
To think that my mother didn't know anything,
that she was expecting me that night by 9:00 PM.
That night, at 9:00, my children said,
"Our mother is coming soon".
They stayed, waiting for me
and I never returned.
Don't cry.
You're crying?
Give me a hug.
You shouldn't cry, because
I love you very much.
You are very young to quit school,
you have the age to study.
- Marina! - What?
Come here.
Come and see your new house.
Oh, how beautiful is my new house.
Thank God.
I thank God for all He has given me.
This is your home.
Holy Father,
Divine Father,
I don't know how to thank you
for the big and small things you have granted me.
I know I have sinned,
not in bad things, but I have fulfilled my word
and praised all you have given me, Holy Father.
Amen.
Here I watch the sun and moon rise and set.
I watch pretty things.
To be honest with you,
I am an alcoholic,
the problem is that people don't want to see the reality of things.
But I understand
I'm an alcoholic.
Why? I don't know.
Well, sometimes
one remembers things through the drinks.
This I can tell you,
I am down and disappointed.
I've even wanted to kill myself
for this.
My golden dream is to get out of here,
dedicate myself to my children,
that my children don't feel ashamed of me.
I've asked them at times if they are ashamed
and they say, "How can we be ashamed of the woman who feeds us?"
I want my daughter to have a career, to be a doctor.
The same with my son, an engineer, a doctor, whatever...
I want them to be good people.
This is my big dream,
to have a fashion show with my designs.
Not with famous models;
with Guatemalan models who wear my fashion trademark.
I have the name already - Kimberly Fashion.
In El Salvador, the Railroad All-Stars won 8-1.
But after this game they never played another one.
Valeria left La Línea and works as a prostitute in another part of the city.
El Vago is still in prison for murder.
Vilma stopped working, not because she realized her dreams,
but because of the injuries caused by her brother.
Lupe is in jail for robbery.
Carol hasn't left Beto yet,
who is also in jail for robbery and drug possession.
La China fled La Línea, intimidated by a policeman's threats.
When the school year ends Mercy will return to El Salvador
and open a bakery. Calín works occasionally as a painter.
Kimberly continues to design exotic, extravagant and erotic clothes.
His clients are mainly transvestites and prostitutes.
Marina is nearing her 66th birthday with the hope
that the next rains won't wash away her house.
For months they received shows of support,
but slowly the movement faded.
In Guatemala hundred of women still die by violent deaths,
many of them prostitutes.
I hardly realized
when suddenly I had to leave and miss you.
Your voice on the answering machine
used to make me feel so safe but not anymore...
Our love
lit up like a ray of light
and after forming
an idyll of love, it extinguished.
I will cry,
you will cry, without the power to disregard yesterday,
that is an obsession.
We will carry the cross of remembering that kiss
that leaves us the memory
that lit up our love.
I dedicate this to you.
See what the world looks like over there.
