How do you pay for the games?

You pay for them

with television rights

which basically comes

from television advertising.

And you pay for them
from commercial sponsors

and ticket prices.

We received an unsolicited bid

from a broadcaster in Italy

for $10 million

for the rights to televise

the games of the 23rd Olympiad

just that country alone.

(GUN FIRES)

I always believed
in television right from the start.

Our future was through television.

What I'd like to do

is to bring the public

into the racing more.

Let's get some cameras

into the pits.

Half the time the commentators
don't know which car it is,

in what position it is,
and who's driving the car, you know.

I think, television coverage
at the moment is very poor.

This is unusual.

They're watering down the tunnel

so that the road surface will be

the same inside the tunnel and out.

In most sports the word
teammate means somebody

who's on your side, an ally.

In the world of grand prix racing,

your teammate may be

your bitterest enemy.

(ENGINES REV)

And there they go!

They're racing in the rain
in Monte Carlo.

Prost in the lead up front.

What a move!
Niki Lauda...

Pulling from eight place
to third place.

We have the two McLarens
running 1-2.

Lauda himself however
being closely pursued now

by young Ayrton Senna of Brazil.

Look here comes Senna,
young Senna of Brazil!

Does he make? Yes, yes!

He's past Niki Lauda.

Senna is in second place
in the race.

Very positive move
from a very young driver.

Oh! And there's somebody spin.

Niki Lauda spun off.

Prost still leads in the McLaren.

That is Ayrton Senna,

a 24 year old driver from Brazil
in second place

and closing in on the leader.

There's the red flag.
They're gonna stop the race.

I think, the decision

to stop the race was very good

and was very safe.

He was much quicker than me,

but the track was so slippery,

so, when I see that

Senna was behind me

it's not (INAUDIBLE)
for the Championship,

it has no point at the moment.

So, I have already decided

if he was just behind me

I would let him pass.

It was much better for me

to get some points
for the Championship

and not to win the race.

(INDISTINCT ANNOUNCEMENT)

A lot of the broadcasters
always wanted to show Monaco.

And now go to four! Good.

So, they said,
"Well, we don't need to see Sweden.

"There's not a big crowd
goes there anyway,

"so, we don't think
that's terribly important."

So, I said, "Well,

"whether you think
so or whether you don't,

"if you're gonna broadcast
Formula One

"you have to broadcast
the World Championship

"wherever the races are placed.

"That's how it is."

Now, the problem with that
was all very nice,

but I had to make sure
that happened.

If the promoters were going to say,
"We're not running this race

because we haven't sold any tickets
and there's not much interest,

make sure and I used to help
a little bit

with sort of semi-bankrolling
some of the promoters

to make sure the race did take place

whether it was bad for them or not.

We had to make sure
that we made it good for them

one way or another.

So, I wanted all races to start

at 2pm European time on a Sunday.

Bernie, I gather you have
a plan-B ready to put into effect.

I don't know
anything about it sorry.

So, everybody knew
if you wanted to follow Formula One,

it wasn't too difficult to find out
what time it would be broadcast

in the country where you were,

which obviously was a bit difficult
for America.

I made absolutely sure

that there was what was commonly
known as free-to-air broadcasting

by the host broadcaster

from the country

where we were racing.

And you could switch a television
on without paying

and watch Formula One.

Third British Grand Prix victory.

More points than anyone in history

and you've closed up
on the World Championship,

which gives you the most pleasure?

A close up on the Championship

because that's important to me

because I only finished

three races so far,

so, I had to make up
a lot of points.

Thank god I made them today.

Niki Lauda crosses the line,

raises his hand,

wins the Austrian Grand Prix,

takes the lead
in the World Championship.

(DRAMATIC MUSIC)

Niki Lauda has made in five wins
this year.

Do you know the problem
with Prost's car?

I don't know.

How much does that worry you

when you see your teammate
in an identical car go out?

Not at all because it doesn't
mean my car has to go.

Doesn't mean you're gonna go out.

A very interesting situation

with Niki Lauda starting
11th on the grid,

Prost up at the front,

remember that Niki's task

is really to try and follow

Alain Prost home,

if Prost wins Niki
has to be second.

I have to win.

I have to work much better

than another race

and I am relaxed

because I think everything is going
to happen very well.

Alain Prost with a clear track
in front of him

is pulling away in the lead.

And Lauda, with one move,
is up into fourth position.

Prost is leading the championship
by 2.5 points.

It's getting very,
very tight indeed.

I think, Mansell's in trouble,

and I think Lauda might have
passed him.

He is.

Niki Lauda has moved up
into second position

Alain Prost to cross the line

and take the chequered flag

to win in Portugal,

but ironically

very, very sadly
from his point of view,

providing Niki Lauda appears
in the next 15 seconds or so,

and there he is.

There is the world champion of 1984

for the third time

in his magnificent career.

I lost the Championship this year
but I did a fantastic season,

I won seven races, not very lucky,

but I am more happy than
the other drivers

in Formula One at the moment
except Niki today.

To win the championship
you need some luck

and I think Niki had
a little bit of luck this year.

And I did a normal season
and Niki was a bit lucky.

But that's alright, and that's life.

You can do nothing about that.

We've got two of the best drivers

in the world.

One of them had to be second

in the world championship

but I don't think anyone lost today.

I think they both did
a fantastic job.

Obviously super for McLaren.

Ron was over the moon with this.

But in the end,

one has to wonder
if it was such a good thing

even back those days

for a team to be so dominant.

Bernie, it's been a great year

and congratulations on it

and we look forward

to another season led by FOCA

and Bernie Ecclestone.

I think, it's gonna be a very, very
close fought world championship

with a lot of team winning races.

I don't think we're gonna have
the McLaren domination

that we had in 1984.

I think, we're gonna see five

or six teams winning races in '85.

And nine points in the Championship,

this is the way
it all started last year.

Yes, it's very good
but last year I was not very lucky.

I think, this year should be better.

Early days was always
a bit of a problem

with the television
or the broadcasters

concerning about the signage.

Upset me as well

because when the promoters
used to do the signage,

they used to have names and things

wrapped round the guard rails

and things like that...

My personal view

which was which was dangerous

is that there is no way

as well as being not at all nice.

we should go.

But like everybody else
I'm under contract

And very, very often
it used to have signs

as a professional race car driver.

in the middle of the circuits

The race is being held,
so, therefore I'm going.

so the camera caught
all the signage.

Actually, the signage was put there
for that very reason,

which the TV people
wasn't too happy about

and quite rightly so too.

Philip Morris were then
the biggest people

for our sponsorship and our signage.

So, I spoke to Paddy McNally
who was dealing with these things,

I had some...

and I said to him, "Well,

some problems with my government

"why don't you leave Philip Morris

but the commitments with my team

were greater and I had
to fulfil them,

"and you start a business

"doing signage?"

He had enough courage early on

that's why I'm here.

to take on something that people

didn't quite realise at the time,

how valuable it was.

The signage would be seen worldwide.

And the value of signage
just went up year by year

I pulled the race from South Africa.

because the more eyeballs

that was watching their signage,

the more valuable it is.

I'd been talking to Nelson
and I said,

And I said to him,

"I don't know if we're going
the right direction for you.

"What I don't want to see
is too many sponsors,

"You used to drive
in a winning team,

"and it doesn't look like
we're in the position

"let's say six major sponsors
and that's it.

"of being a winning team again."

"All these other little sponsors
looks a bit scruffy."

"So, I said, "Well, have you been
offered anything?"

(SOFT MUSIC)

And he told me...

he said, "Well,
Frank has contacted me."

And he told me, "I think it was
a little bit over a million."

I said, "Well, why don't you explain

"that I've offered you 1.6 million
or 1.7 million?"

I said, "It might encourage them
to offer you a bit more,

"then maybe you ought to take it,"

which is exactly what happened.

All the effort and the years

that I have put behind motor racing,

since four years old,

Frank was there at the test

'cause he was obviously

are giving me something good back.

very keen to see exactly,

Not just for me,

not only what was going on

but especially for all Brazilians.

but how the drivers were reacting
with each other.

But then he had a car accident
on the way back.

Hello everyone, I'm Jackie Stewart.

You know, the paddock here

is home away from home if you like

I sent the plane to him, to Ricard,
to bring him back.

for this travelling circus

of grand prix folk.

And Sid Watkins immediately
put him into hospital.

These motorhomes provide food,
refreshments and rest

And Sid thought Frank
was in pretty bad shape.

And he wasn't particularly
gonna come out of hospital.

for the team personnel,
for the sponsors, and for the press.

Just didn't believe it.

Williams at the time
bought a double-decker bus

and wanted to set that up
for entertaining clients,

(SOFT MUSIC)

have a kitchen on board
and god knows what else.

I was very happy

to have Elio on board with us.

And I said to Frank,
"You can't have that.

Charming guy, very talented,

"It's not the sort of thing
we want to show to people".

and there was no reason why Elio
in the right car at the right time

So, Frank said to me at the time,
"Well, this isn't Ascot.

wouldn't easily have won
the World Championship.

"This is motor racing."

What strengths do you think
you've brought to the Brabham team?

I said, "Well, it should be
like Ascot."

A lot of motivations.

So, I said to McNally,

And do you have any predictions

"You ought to do this Patrick

for the first Grand Prix?

"because it's part
of your sponsorship,

Well, I hope to be there,

"you can look after your sponsors
as well."

but we still it's a long way to go
and for us, I mean, to the...

So, that's how we got
the paddock club.

for the development.

I could...I could do well
even in the first Grand Prix, yes.

(ENGINE REVS)

I felt there was a couple of things

that were quite important

Gordon threw himself

into another car.

as far as Formula One
goes in television,

Completely different type and style

but certainly very important
was our onboard cameras.

which had it all worked

it would have been something
quite super special.

But they had a lot of trouble
with the vibration

and all those sort of problems.

So, we had a big problem to solve
which we did solve.

Unfortunately it didn't work.

And gradually year by year
or month by month even,

the cameras got better,
and better, and better.

And Nelson Piquet wins
the 1986 Brazilian Grand Prix.

There was a little bit
of a discussion early on

about where we'd put the cameras

and the cars that people thought
they'd influence

And you will hear the crowd go
absolutely mad.

the aerodynamics of the car.

So, I said, "Well, we'll put

"dummy cameras on all of the cars

That day was the inevitable result

"without live cameras."

of 27 years of whole
in the driving.

Hesnault is looking for a way
to overtake

I was laying there on the ground

while the ambulance took about

an hour to get there.

I couldn't feel very much
except my hands and arms,

and there we see him
complete the manoeuvre.

which were burning
as if I'd fallen off a bicycle

Cost is of consequence.

and got gravel, you know,
ripped the skin off.

Satisfaction is vital.

I was doing more and more
running things in Formula One,

I feel normal and maybe not quite

as mobile as I would like to be

so, I think, slowly but surely

but I'm enjoying being here

very, very much indeed,

the team was losing its edge.

and I'm glad that the team

is going very well without me

because I do also
at the same time feel a bit rusty.

And Nelson was thinking,
"Maybe I've been around too long,

Everything's happening
a bit quickly for me.

"maybe I should move
onto somewhere else."

And tremendous stuff
this by the two Williams cars.

So, he was weighing up the ideas
of a divorce from Brabham.

They're involved in what is a very,
very important personal battle.

Mansell, who has started the season
as the number-2 driver,

When I got married to Slavica,

Piquet was brought in
for the big money.

it was in the registry office.

And we realised I was told

And Piquet now is indulging
in a showdown

we needed a witness early on,

to try and re-establish himself
as number-1.

we'd need a witness.

And the fact that their car
at the moment,

So, I said, OK.

So, I took the cleaner
that we had at the time,

seems to be the class of the field

means that their most important
battle is with each other.

appeared at the registrar office,

and suddenly I found out

'cause I hadn't spoken
to the cleaner before

Mansell looks now as
if he's beginning to make

that she didn't speak English.

So, the registrar thought this
wasn't really the right way to go

And there he goes.

and said, "Well, I'm sorry
but we can't do this."

Lap 23, Nigel Mansell leads
the British Grand Prix.

So, I said, "Well, hang on,
I'll find somebody."

So, I rang Max Mosley,

I said, "Max, is your secretary
busy for a minute?"

Knocked out.
This is too much for me.

And he said, "I don't know. Why?

That's very kind, thank you.
It's good to be back.

"What...what...what do you want?"

I said, "Could she pop
to the registry office

And Mansell is the winner!

Great stuff!

He's extended the Williams'
Constructors' Championship lead

"if you can spare her
for half-an-hour or something?"

and the crowd is on their feet!

So, she duly arrived
and she was the witness.

No things thrown up in the air
and all that nonsense.

Nigel Mansell, that really was quite

So, I got signed the forms
whatever it was,

one of the most remarkable races
I have ever seen.

and that was it.

Nigel, you have any problems?

Thought we ought to go

I didn't want to lose.

I went to and said,

"Let's go dinner out to Langham's
actually as it was."

Tell me, I don't honestly believe

that Piquet gave you an inch.

Got in the car and drove there
and they were busy,

so, I said, "Oh, forget it,"
and went back to the office.

No, but he gave me half an inch.

(LAUGHTER)

Nelson Piquet, what can you
explain about this race?

What is it Nigel,

about Brands Hatch, that seems

OK, it's not a it's not a question.

to bring out the very best in you?

What do you want to ask me?
Well...

Well, I think, any British circuit

I have a million things
I can explain to you about the race

brings out the best in every

British driver, you know,

but what do you want to know?

just performing in front

Which kind of problems did you have?

I didn't have any problems.

The car was good
all the way through.

it's Senna leading.

As the lead changes momentarily,
and off spins Rosberg,

and into him goes Nelson Piquet!

Rosberg trying to take Senna

Piquet has stalled.

Yes, what a shame
that was poor Nelson Piquet.

Got his front wing that has been
knocked off the car,

so, even if he could restart,

he wouldn't be
in very competitive shape.

The Italian Formula One driver
Elio de Angelis

is still fighting for his life
following the horrific accident

Keke Rosberg away he goes

after a very long pit stop

while testing his Brabham
BMW in France.

by today's standards.

And in fact Rosberg
has lost pretty much exactly a lap.

De Angelis lost control of the car
at 170mph

That's him in front of the leaders.

at the Paul Ricard circuit.

Senna and Nigel Mansell
in second place.

The car spun, cartwheeled
and turned upside down

before bursting into flames,

Keke Rosberg holding
up Ayrton Senna.

with several minutes
before de Angelis could be lifted

Rosberg is angry with Senna,
there's no doubt about that.

from the wreckage.

He was given the kiss of life
before being flown to hospital.

Somebody who was at the test session

which we had at Ricard
that time just told me

Well, look at this!

A terrific scrap for the leader
and there's a change

exactly what had happened.

And it wasn't a maybe or anything.

because the Williams has gone
past Ayrton Senna

He'd actually died there.

who has therefore lost the lead
and he has lost it to Nigel Mansell.

(INDISTINCT TALK)

Mansell took advantage
of his teammate Keke Rosberg

Gordon was obviously upset.

holding up Ayrton Senna.

The designer is hurt
more than anyone.

I think, Rosberg feels that Senna
shut the door on him

We're all hurt.

But you have to start thinking,

pretty fiercely in that incident
just a couple of laps ago.

"It was my fault that this happened
and we lost somebody."

I could see Gordon was losing

And there is father Mansell,
looks very happy indeed.

his enthusiasm a little bit
and his touch.

And he wanted to leave.

So, he left and went to McLaren.

Generally, I think, our team went

Prost is catching and goes through.

downhill because Gordon
inspired people

And Alain Prost not only goes
past De Angelis, but laps Watson

and we all looked up to him
as being a genius.

So, when the genius is gone,

and the red and white
Marlboro McLaren

suddenly you haven't got
a team anymore.

of Frenchman number-2 Alain Prost

And I decided it was the time
to sell Brabham.

is now on his way virtually
to World Championship certainty.

Brabham was always a fighting team,

fighting against the odds...

and it had lost.

And just as Niki Lauda
won the championship

Alfa Romeo had bought the company,

for Marlboro McLaren in 1984.

so, that was Brabham
out of Formula One.

So, now, does Alain Prost do so
for the Marlboro-McLaren team?

And there they are!

They know what they've done!

We generally thought,
and particularly with Jean-Marie,

What about the reception
of this crowd?

that the cars were getting
too quick.

They're just unbelievable.

I mean, if anybody's won the race
for me today it's...

I said,
"Let's get rid of the turbo".

it's the people out there.

They've just been unbelievable.

I mean, in the last few laps
I could just see 'em.

I mean, it was just extraordinary.

Best feeling I've ever had
in my life.

What does it mean to you to be

the first Frenchman ever to win
the Grand Prix World Championship,

a country that gave us the name
'Grand Prix'.

As usual, the teams
that were super competitive

I know that it is very important

for the French people,

wasn't at all happy.

but I think for me

And the ones
that weren't were delighted.

it's important to win
the championship.

I don't care too much
if I'm French or not.

That was a superb bit of driving.

I wanted to make sure
that we had a World Championship,

not a European Championship.

And I was very, very interested
to see if we could expand

Formula One throughout the world.

John Bannon,

the Premier of South Australia,

wanted to have a meeting with me.

So, I said, "Fine."

Thinking perhaps he expected me
to go to Australia to meet him.

But he duly appeared at our office
in Chessington

and introduced his self.

I said, "Let's go down the pub
and have lunch."

(CHEERFUL MUSIC)

The city of churches
will reverberate

with the sound
of the world's best drivers

competing in the world's best cars
for the World Championship.

Basically he wanted to put
Adelaide on the map.

And it was a very, very,
very successful race.

In fact, I said
we'd never ever leave Adelaide

as long as John is in charge there.

Adelaide alive is the catchphrase
of the Grand Prix.

This has been a marvellous activity
to be involved in.

It's had its risks,

but to bring it off
and be part of that

has been great.

Adelaide was one of those circuits
that everyone enjoyed.

And from my point of view,

I had another interest.

They had the best Thai restaurant
I'd ever been to.

If Mansell can just finish

in the top three,

then he becomes the first

British World Champion

since James Hunt ten years ago.

Does it worry you starting

side by side with your teammate?

Will you let him go into the first

corner first if he's really

pushing for it?

I am delighted

because I mean,

you couldn't have someone better
next to you than your teammate.

And he's got to win the race,

so, the last thing he'll be doing

is sort of dicing
at the first corner.

I'm gonna try to push Mansell out
and try to win the race.

What do you do about Prost?

How are you gonna
push him out as well?

No, I don't need to push him out,
he will finish behind me.

I don't care too much
about winning or losing.

I mean...I mean,
it's not traumatic,

but I'd like to win.

We made sure
it was shown live worldwide.

First of all, congratulations

for being with us

at this unearthly hour.

And whether you made it via

the late-night movie,

the all-night party
or the simple alarm clock,

let's hope the reward
is a race to remember

and that world title at last
for Britain's Nigel Mansell.

And it was a good race.

And its go!

And a superb start
from Nigel Mansell.

That is Mansell!

That is Nigel Mansell
and the car absolutely shattered.

He's fighting for control.

Into the pits goes Piquet.

Nelson was running

the same tyres as Mansell.

And I wouldn't be at all surprised

if his team didn't call him in.

Within sight of his 25th Grand Prix,
his second World Championship,

an absolutely superb achievement.

You have seen the crowd rising
to this popular little Frenchman

who has demonstrated yet again
that he is the driver of the day.

And he takes the chequered flag.

He wins the Australian Grand Prix.

He wins the World Championship
of 1986!

Absolute euphoria
in the McLaren pit.

If somebody was writing a script
to make a film,

That's how they'd finish
the Championship in that way.

It's even better that I could think.

Much, much better
than the one last year

but I knew that I need luck,

a little bit of luck
to win this Championship,

and I had some luck today.

Well, I'm very sorry for Nigel

because I know

how it is to lose

a Championship on the last race

and I'm very sorry for him,

it must be very hard.

Alain Prost was the best driver.

In the first timed practice,

Nelson Piquet had
an absolutely colossal crash

at over 200 mph.

It cannot be a mistake
because it's a...

It's a straight line. It's a...

It's a long left corner
for that reason, something happened.

I don't know, it's difficult to say.

He certainly lost a lot
of his performance after that.

This is where Mansell will be

looking to challenge.

Piquet will hold the inside line.

Oh!

And Mansell's through
and a tremendous drive by Nigel

but that really was a bad mistake
by Piquet.

He just opened the door again.

NEWS: One driver with
a multi-million dollar paycheque.

But in reality his performances
have been eclipsed

by teammate Nigel Mansell.

Piquet says that the supposed
number one

and number two driver situation
doesn't exist.

And rivalry between the two drivers
is encouraged by the team.

But it's a dangerous practice
in Piquet's eyes.

We lost the Championship last year
because we fight each other.

We take points from each other.

Maybe we can lose the Championship
again this year for that reason.

But that is...it's Frank Williams'
decision.
