i'm going to give you a mixing tip today

about eq'ing heavy guitars and taking

out some of the low end rumble as well

as uh smoothing out some of the high-end

harshness

so i've got an example here it's just a

standard left and right rhythm guitar

track heavy distorted tone

here's what it sounds like with nothing

on it

all right not bad but would definitely

do make some minor adjustments that

would uh really help that a lot so let's

start with a high pass filter and we're

going to use this basically just to um

just to take out some of the low end mud

so

here we go i'm going to start

start low and bring it up until until it

sounds good

all right so just taking out some of

that low end build up that rumble that's

just going to get in the way of the base

and that isn't really adding anything to

the guitar tone i'll just do a quick uh

before and after so you can hear the

difference here

all right so a little bit subtle but

you know in the context of a big busy

mix that definitely makes a huge

difference uh just with the low end

clarity uh so let's keep going i would

also um try a low-pass filter to clean

up some of the high-end fizz on this

guitar track so

let's do the same thing here but just on

the other end of the spectrum

all right that's a pretty good spot uh

if you heard out as i kind of got down

below 10k on this track it sounded like

it just lost a little too much

brightness and it started sounding a

little dull so

backed it back off to around 10k and i

think that's helping just cut out some

of the high end that's going to

interfere with the just the sheen of the

vocals and maybe the cymbals too

all right so now we're in a pretty good

spot but we can go a little further and

notch out some harshness that's usually

tends to be around 3k and maybe 5 and 6k

so

i'm going to show you how to find that

those harsh frequencies and cut them out

a little bit so we're going to use a

really

a really

narrow band eq boost here and basically

just go fishing for the frequencies and

try to find where it's the harshest

all right definitely gets really nasty

around there it's around uh 3.5 k

so let's just notch that out a little

bit

all right so that's uh that's definitely

a big improvement there and i think we

can get rid of a little more a little

higher up than that so let's do the same

thing

all right so again these are just subtle

cuts not doing huge huge cuts there

because that's gonna it's gonna totally

take away the bite and the

aggressiveness of your tone if you if

you make huge cuts in these areas but

just a little bit goes a long way in in

smoothing out the guitar tone so

now that we've got all that finished

let's just do a quick a b comparison to

see what we got

so there you go really small simple

moves you can make on your heavy guitars

that can just make a world of difference

and really smooth them out and get rid

of the low end mud

hopefully that helps you can do this

with basically any any eq i used the

waves req here

but you could just use the built-in uh

plugins and pro tools to do the exact

same thing
