[Kayla] We're definitely
running out of time.

- [water bubbling]

those two rocks?

- [James] Yeah.
- [Dustin] All right, Fred,
time to get out of there.

- [thudding]
- It's like Russian roulette.

We know this thing could fall,

if you dig underneath it.

- [Dustin] James!

[Fred] Total disaster
waiting to happen.

Would you risk your life

[Carlos] There's gold

[James over radio]

We could have one hell

[Kayla] Pieces all over.

This could be our

[sweeping instrumental

[Dustin] I don't know how long
winter's gonna hold out,

but it's been
a really hard season.

We're just gonna keep pushing
and pushing and pushing.

[Paul] In just days,
the brutal Alaskan winter

will force the miners
out of Nugget Creek.

[Kayla] Oh, this will give us
wood for a few days.

[Paul] Both crews are
finally on a pay-streak.

But, to avoid a failed season,

they need to get down
to the chunky gold,

that gave Nugget Creek
its name.

[Dustin] Finally, we're
finding a bunch of gold,

and we're gonna push
as hard as we can.

Dig everything we can.

Just need to keep goin'.

See, you got a little snow

coming down
the mountain out there.

I know that everybody's
starting' to get
a little nervous about that.

I sure would be.

- But they need to get in there
and get some gold.
- [Dustin] Let's go.

[thrilling instrumental
music playing]

I have a really
good feeling that--

that there's ancient gold
stuck back there

in that corner.

[Paul] At Dustin's
dive site, desperate for gold,

they've staked their season
and their lives,

on hitting it big
under a 50-ton killer.

[ominous music playing]

[James] I think there is
a load of gold in there.

I hope I'm not wrong.

But, I've been finding
crystalline gold in there,

which means,
it hasn't travelled far.

So, and that tell me that

that place
is loaded with gold.

[Fred] Right now,
they're digging
underneath that thing.

You can see a big cavern
underneath there.

Bad news... total disaster
waiting to happen.

It's a big boulder,
just hope that

it doesn't fall
and kill us all.

Holy [bleep]!

Look, man. I know
how dangerous

that looks and is.

[James] I have a plan.

[Dustin] All right. Well,
just try not to get squished,
all right?

[James muffled] All right.

- Ready?
- [James] Yeah.

[Carlos] All right,

[suspenseful music playing]

[James over radio] Argh!
My nuts are frozen.

Amazing area,
but a little eerie, though.

I hope there's
good gold in it.

I'd like to
get over here again
and clean this out.

I guarantee you,
there's gonna be good gold
in the box.

I'll take down
a water jet blaster.

[music intensifies]

Using a sprayer right now
to cut through all that stuff.

It looks like he's
cutting through really well.

[Paul] James uses
the gold blaster

to break up the gold-rich,
red hard pack,

but the red layer,

runs beneath
the enormous boulder.

The more material he removes,

the more he undermines
the 50-ton killer.

That thing right now,
is absolutely unstable.

What're they gonna do?

Just completely
undermine that thing?

Recipe for disaster.

Yeah, it's
worst case scenario,

but I'd say
the chances are 50-50.

[James breathing heavily]

and he's decided
that's where it's at, man.

so he's going for it.

- Life and limb.
- [James breathing heavily]

[James groaning and straining]

[Fred] I got my work
cut out for me today.

This rock could move
at any time.

Need to shore up that
entire rock together.

We'll put a chain,
about five of them,
across the top of that.

A little on an angle,

and see if we can
stabilize that rock.

I mean, we're talking, uh,
people's lives out here.

[James breathing heavily]

[Dustin] There's a big boulder
over our heads,

and Fred thinks it needs to be
tied up more.

I might let him just
handle that.

Guess you can never be
too safe,

but it's safe to, um...

I think we're just gonna
keep digging.

He sews up the rock,
it'll be fine.

[James] Holy smokes!

[Paul] In an attempt
to stabilize the boulder,

Fred will drill ten holes,

insert anchor bolts...

[thudding]

...then, attach five lengths
of half-inch chain,

to secure both halves
of the boulder together.

[dramatic music playing]

[Fred] I'mma mark out
where I'm gonna put my...
upper bolts.

Damn, that's a hard job.

Any good possibility that, uh,
that is gonna do the job

when I get some chains.

Just see if we can kind of
hold that rock together.

We don't wanna see
that one half of it
just... dropping off.

[James over radio] I'm goin'
to the danger zone.

[Dustin] James has decided to
go against Fred's,

uh, suggestion.

He'll go straight underneath
the damn boulder.

Tell you my stress levels
are coming up,

but I don't know,

looks like a bad idea.

[James straining
and breathing heavily] Yeah.

- [rocks clattering]
- [James] Oh, [bleep]!

[bleeping]

[Carlos] Bunch of
crazy [bleep]!

That... it's like

[adventurous music playing]

[Richardson] The current
has picked up right here.

- [Kayla] Nasty water.
- [Richardson] Yeah.

[Kayla] Not fun.

[Kayla] We found a little bit
of gold so far,

we've been on
a good pay streak.

But it's not enough to
make up for all the effort

that we've
put into this season.

We went
several months actually,

without any gold.

Been a lot of struggles
this year.

[Paul] Kayla and her crew

uncovered gold
in their last three dives,

and should be closing in on
Nugget Creek's fabled fortune.

[Kayla] Today I'm gonna try
to keep chasin' the bedrock

down at the bottom
of the hole.

We're definitely
running out of time,

so, hopefully we'll see some
good gold in the box today.

[Paul] Already nine-feet down,

with a six-foot-wide area
on sloping bedrock,

Kayla's mission,
remove the rocks and gravel

down to the deepest point
of the creek,

in the search for
a huge deposit of gold.

Right now, while we still can,

we gotta try to hit it
as hard as we possibly can.

[intense music playing]

[engine sputtering]

Come on,
you cold-blooded [bleep].

[blowing on spark plug]

Should have been
a nice, easy start-up.

This is ridiculous.

[Kayla] Damn it.

[Richardson] So, I just put in
some additive

to help with the water.

With all this rain
and moisture we've got,

it's hard to keep water
out of the fuel line.

[engine sputtering]

[rope snaps]

[Kayla] What the hell!

[Richardson] And there goes
the [bleep] rope!

I can't get this thing going,
we can't dredge.

[Kayla] This is why
I don't ever

usually get dressed
before the dredge is going.

[Richardson] It won't even try
to fire off.

So, I gotta hook it up
with a rope and a knot,

and start the engine

We'll spray a little bit
of starting fluid.

- [engine fires and starts up]

[Richardson] Kayla's on
a mission right now.

She wants to get
as much off the bottom,
as she possibly can.

At the fast pace
she's working,

it's gonna work us to death
up top.

But, this creek,

with all the gold
that it's got,

it's gonna be worth it.

[sweeping instrumental
music playing]

[James breathing heavily]

[James] This is some of
the hardest dredging

I've done in a long time.

Whoo!

We got something going now.

Look at that.

[Paul] At Nugget Creek,
James is four hours into

dredging the gold-rich,
red hard pack,

beneath the 50-ton
granite boulder.

[James] That's awesome.

[Dustin] I think that
that's darkest I've seen
that damn sluice box.

Look at it.

[Carlos] All that, has gold.
It's that hard pack.

There's gonna be tons of gold.

[James] I think I might have
a slight clog. Not bad.

You wanna double down
real quick.

[Carlos laughs heartily]

- We've got gold.
- [Dustin] Really?
[bleep] Yeah.

Long line of gold
and one good piece.

[Dustin] Did you get gold,
for real?

Two lines of gold.

Just saw gold in the box,

so there's gold
every time we dive right now.

It's not a lot of gold,
but it's gold every time.

[James] Yeah, I think I got
a good rhythm going here now.

[drilling]

[Fred] The drilling's done
on that big-ass rock there.

I'm gonna put some
half-inch chains

on these five-inch bolts.

This whole entire rock,
could let loose.

The whole thing.

Hopefully, what we're doing
will at least

stop it part-way.

[ominous music playing]

[Paul] With winter's
grip tightening,

James has no choice

but to put his life
on the line,

while Fred races to secure
the unstable boulder.

[James straining] Lot more
work than I bargained for.

For sure.

What's going on?

[breathing heavily]

[groans] Why is my umbilical
going over here?

Oh, [bleep]! I'm stuck!

[intense music playing]

[James groaning]

He's tangled up.

[Dustin] Hey, let's get that
hose out of his [bleep] way.

- James!

[Carlos groans]

[Dustin] James hooked up
the basket, filled it up,

and he pinned himself
to the bottom.

but that would be

a mortal sin that
you end up dying for.

I know what's happening,
we're getting on gold,

and everybody's just,
"Go, go!"

And no prep, no prep, no prep.

We're gonna
get killed like that.

- [James groans]
- [Dustin] Let's take
a time-out,

reorganize everything,
right quick, right now.

[Carlos] You can push
the dredge hose
all the way to the side.

Carlos is suggesting
that you shove that hose,

all the way to the wall
and that probably will

- stop a lot of your problems.
- [James] All right.

[Carlos] Hey, don't take it

[Paul] When
the nozzle surfaced...

[James] I'm sorry, guys.

...a mix of air and water
caused a violent surge,

or rooster-tail,

to blast across
the gold catching sluice box.

[Dustin] Take a minute.

Calm yourself down.

You're doing good, man.

He's wrecked.

[Dustin] You know,
I'm thinking about
pulling him out.

- Yeah, man.
- [Dustin] You know, he's gonna

we just, uh, call it a day?
- [James] Copy that.

[James] Oh, thank you.
[grunts]

[Carlos] I gotcha.

All right, James,
you're free, amigo.

Definitely got some gold, man.

I'm gonna take this thing
off you, man.

You go look at the gold.

[James groans]

I haven't opened it up, yet.

[James] Huh!

[Dustin] I thought...

- Ooh! I thought I saw gold,
but now I don't.
- [Carlos] Wait a minute, man.

There was
a whole line of gold, dude.

[Dustin] I saw that
[bleep] too.

What the [bleep]?
Did we wash it out? [bleep]

They thought they saw
something earlier in the box.

I don't know whether it got
washed down or what.

We had two distinct
lines of gold.

The only logical explanation

is that we washed
the damn gold

out of the sluice box.

That's my only thought,
'cause I saw gold in there.

I don't know,
if who was watching,

but it kept coming up
out of the water,

and flowing air,

and probably rooster-tailed
the gold right out the back.

I don't know.

Or did they see pyrite?

[Dustin] I saw it.

Wasn't pyrite, I know
the damn difference.

This isn't my first time.

Somebody just took
our birthday away, dude.

Somebody just
canceled Christmas.

We see lines
and lines of gold,

and now,
at the end of the day,

[Kayla] Basket's ready to go.

I moved all the big rocks.
I'm gonna start dredging.

[Paul] Kayla's storming
through an epic,
six-hour dive,

attempting to dredge

as much gold-rich material
as possible,

in the few days left
of the season.

[Kayla over radio]
Oh, [bleep]!

There's a section here
where...

[breathing heavily]
dips down a little bit.

This is a lot better.

[Richardson] The material
coming from the box
looks really good.

[Kayla] There were cracks
and I pried it.

It was only basket rocks
that were cemented together.

Now, I'm under it.

[Richardson] Nice.

[Paul] The depression
in the bedrock

that Kayla has found,

could be a perfect gold trap.

[Kayla] If there's not gold
in this stuff,

I don't know
what it would be in.

I found a lot of [bleep].

[Richardson] Yeah, you have.

I couldn't even tell you
how many yard materials
she's run through that dredge.

[Kayla groans]
I'm worn out though.

[Paul] The dive hole
is now at 10-feet,

but the bedrock continues
to lead them deeper,

and they have yet
to reach the bottom.

[Kayla] Coming up.
[breathing heavily and groans]

I'm all wobbly.

[motor whirring]

[Kayla] Oh, looks like
someone's eating dinner.

- [triumphant instrumental

[Paul] After a six-hour dive,

and with the
end of the season looming,

Kayla is desperate to see if
she's added to the gold total.

[motor whirring]

[Kayla] Oh, looks like
someone's eating dinner.

[Justin] Yeah.

[Kayla] What!

- [Richardson] Oh, [bleep].
- [Kayla] Get me some already.

[Richardson]

[Kayla laughs]

I was busting ass down there.

Fact that it's only been
getting better,

- that's a good sign. So...

...we should be
hitting something
pretty good here soon.

I hit a layer in the bedrock,
it kinda dipped down,

and I knew, if there was
gonna be a gold catch,

that was gonna be it.

Right now, we're on gold.

We're finally starting to
see good gold.

Hopefully, it continues
to get better.

With the material that
Kayla had coming out today,

once she hit that pocket,

that was a little bit
of excitement.

It's definitely picking up.

We're finding
the right material.

Today was proof.

Couldn't ask for a better day.

and a 100% more safe
that it was yesterday.

[Dustin] How'd the rock go?

[Fred] All sewed up.

had to do something.

Looks like Fred gave
uh, the giant boulder
a Frankenstein stitch up.

He put some chains
around it and he thinks
it's gonna stop it from going.

Hopefully,
the rock doesn't fall
and squish us.

I got that, uh, rock
stitched up for you.

It's a whole lot safer
to be there now.

underneath the giant boulder

that's covered
virgin bedrock
for centuries.

[James] Hey, those two rocks
above here are pretty loose,
actually,

I should probably
pop the top one
and then drill the other one.

Absolutely, amigo.

[narrator] Removing
a keystone rock

could cause the enormous
100,000 pound
boulder to shift.

If Fred's fix doesn't hold,

the boulder could come
crashing down

ending their season
in an instant.

[Carlos] This is when
we start getting crazy, dude.

they're gonna blow.

Even securing that rock
with those chains,

if they completely pull
all them rocks out from
underneath the front end,

it's a possibility
the whole thing could get
rolled right over.

James, what is the purpose
for blowing
those rocks there?

[James] They're falling down.

Right where Carlos is at.

[Fred] It won't accomplish
anything.

And,

inviting danger.

I mean,
sewing that thing together

just kept the thing
from falling in the hole,
that's all.

[James] Hey, Carlos, uh...

Fred thinks
it's a little too dangerous
to be popping.

[Carlos] This is the deal,

if he wants these rocks
to stay where they're at,

then this can't dig
anymore.

[Fred] Talk about
a moth to the flame.

They seem to think that
just 'cause I sewed
that thing together

with some chains
that it's stable.

[Paul] So you mean to
focus on,

coming downstream
a little bit?

There's still
a lot of material back there
that can be worked

- to expand
the bedrock back.
- [Paul] Okay.

[narrator] At Kayla's site,
they're on the gold

chasing a pastry
towards the deepest
point of the creek.

[Scott] You still want
the heavier vest?

have yet to uncover
the big nuggets

[Paul] Anytime we see gold

We know
it's down there now,

we're following it,
we're on bedrock, so...

Continue to move forward
and hopefully put
more of that in the box.

[Kayla] Hopefully...

stay on that pay streak
that we've already hit,

and hopefully,
we'll see a lot more
gold in the box today.

With winter
creeping up on us,

we don't know how long
that we have.

We could have one week,
we could have two weeks,

we just don't know.

So, we need to make
the best of every time
that we have,

get as much done
as we can,

and hopefully,
the weather holds out.

the water recharge

gets very, very hot.
