Original subtitles

Following the strange murder of Antonio Tindari,

the owner of a recently opened casino,

Corrado Cattani finds himself face to face

with Tano Cariddi, who has become the President of

the Antinari Bank and who is secretly linked to the Mafia,

on whose behalf he plans on taking over a large

finance corporation: the International Insurance Securities,

with the help of Espinosa, a disturbing man of a

thousand powers and a thousand mysteries.

Corrado's investigations cause two women to cross his path

the judge, Silvia Conti and the young Ester Rasi,

daughter of the President of the International Insurance Securities.

After initial differences, Corrado discovers that the judge

has a courageous, determined and profoundly honest personality.

With her assistance he manages to prevent custody of

Greta Antinari from being awarded to Tano,

and she's instead sent to a small orphanage

looked after by an old friend of Corrado, Brother Bernardo.

In contrast, Corrado's tender, almost paternal and

protective relationship with Ester becomes one

which worries and outrages him when he learns that

Ester is soon to marry Tano.

Convinced that this is the result of a ploy by Tano

to coerce the father in a difficult position, Corrado is unable

to do anything to stop the wedding from taking place.

Further horrors confront him:

in a terrible ambush, Salvatore Frolo, the man who killed

the owner of the casino, is wounded by numerous bullets

which nearly kills him as a result and leaves him paralyzed,

unable to move or speak.

Frustrated by his search for the truth, and especially by

journalist Davide Faeti, who many years before in Sicily

worked on the case but who then abandoned it out of cowardice,

Corrado swears to Frolo, who has been reduced forever

to a wretched state, that he won't abandon him,

that he'll see it through to the very end...

THE OCTOPUS 4

Part Three

Hair like this?

Yes, roughly but his face was a little more square.

Let's try that one.

This one?

Yes. This one is good. Let's try and do the eyes now.

OK.

I'd use smaller eyes here.

Like... like two slits. Let's try.

Yes, like these.

Yes, it's him. It's definitely him.

Take a look.

Transmit this to all stations and to all borders.

I was wondering why Frolo does not appear in the police records.

Eighteen years ago there was a police investigation.

I've asked for Judge Fiorani's files,

but it will take a little time for them to arrive.

OK.

Here they are. Do you want us to take them back with the others?

Yes, thanks.

Why don't you take a break? You haven't slept for two nights.

No, no... I'm fine.

But where?

OK. Give me the address, we'll send a car out right away.

It's for room 112.

OK. See you soon.

Fabio.

Take this to room 112.

Right away, sir.

Can I help you?

I'd like a room, please.

Very well. It's on the second floor.

Hello? The police are outside.

They followed me.

Come on, hurry up! We have to get out of here right away.

The police are watching Zicchitedda's shop.

That idiot has really put his foot in it.

Hello. Isn't this room 1107

They told me downstairs that it was the second door on the left.

This is 110, isn't it?

No. This is room 112.

Oh, sorry. I hope that I didn't disturb you. Goodbye.

Hello?

Captain, there's an external call for you. It's urgent.

Hello, this is Cattani.

Yes, I'm listening.

We'll come right away.

But you get out of there quick. Do you understand?

What's happening?

I don't have any time.

Follow me!

You go with them!

Go and look after that guy from room 110.

If he's just a moron, leave. If he's a snitch, get rid of him!

Where did you learn to drive like this?

I took a course at the police academy.

And what mark did you get?

20 out of 20.

Didn't you get 20 out of 20 in data analysis, as well?

I got 20 out of 20 for everything.

I'm going to kill you, you pig.

Don't move!

I told you to get out of here.

I knew you were coming...

I went to the station because I had read the papers,

and I wanted to speak to you. I stopped in the car park;

there were photographers and journalists there.

But among them, there was a man who has never been a journalist,

a man called Zicchitedda, and many years ago,

in Sicily, he belonged to the Bonura family. He's Mafioso.

He was here to inspect the place,

he was looking at the layout of your office. He drew this map.

Do you know what this means?

You tell me.

It means that this time they're after you.

They were preparing an attack. I followed him and here I am.

But didn't you used to write about women?

I was fired.

When?

This morning.

And now who do you work for?

For you.

When I was in Sicily,

I saw at least 300 corpses, all who'd been murdered.

I memorized hundreds of crime scenes.

If someone was shot in a car, the blood spurted everywhere.

If the shooting happened on the street,

the victim was always face down.

But the worst murders

were the murders of those who tried to escape.

You would see a stream of blood near the window

and that's where you'd find the victim.

No man has the courage to jump out a window,

even if he's being pursued by a level led gun.

I used to issue the death certificates;

I registered them all like a robot.

Even when they killed my own brother,

it was like a reflex I had been conditioned to do,

and I began to outline... mentally...

how the article would be written.

"Judge Fiorani is there, lying on the ground in a courtyard,

with his mouth dirtied by blood.

His glasses lie in a puddle, with its lenses smashed.

Under the electric light we can see his blue socks.

Judge Fiorani always wore them short,

he was someone for whom elegance was never a serious matter."

I've returned to the side of the good, Detective. I'm the lost lamb.

Happy?

It's not mine. I don't know how to write.

It's a picture.

I don't know how to draw, either.

Your boy took a cake to the hotel with this piece of paper inside.

Who was in room 112?

How should I know?

It must have been someone who likes Sicilian desserts...

You came to Milan two days ago. Why?

For a vacation.

With two pistols in your pocket.

Well, I have a lot of enemies.

Let's talk about your friends, instead.

All the people that you were with were carrying false papers.

Like yours, for that matter. So, who were they?

They were people who were also on the tour.

They came to Milan to see the Duomo like me.

I don't know anyone... anyone.

Come in, Trevi.

He's the one who was shooting on the highway.

Who are you? What did you see? Who do you know?

Captain, get your man out of here.

Calm down.

Let go of me! You bastard!

You're killing me!

If you don't get up quickly, I'll break both your legs myself

Please, Captain. Don't you start now, too.

I'll denounce you all. I'll make you all see.

Sit down.

Mr. Francesco De Rita, nicknamed the Slug, I charge you formally,

with murder, attempted massacre and association with the Mafia.

What massacre? What murder? You're crazy!

Mr. Silvio Marozzu, nicknamed Zicchitedda,

I charge you formally with attempted murder

and with association with the Mafia.

I swear! I haven't admitted a thing! None of it's true!

You need proof. This is ridiculous! You need proof.

You have to help me!

Still no breakthrough in the investigations on the brutal attack,

in which Captain Cattani's bodyguard lost his life.

The investigating commission was shut inside the

District Attorney's office all morning

and has not yet released any information.

However, it seems that this afternoon Judge Silvia Conti

made several arrests.

Moving on to foreign political news with a report

from our New York correspondent...

Dinner is served, sir.

Get the car ready.

Yes, sir.

Corrado!

Corrado.

What are you doing here?

Oh, Corrado, I've been so worried, I didn't know if you were OK.

Aren't you supposed to be on your honeymoon?

No, Corrado. Listen, I have to talk to you.

I don't have time now.

Go ahead.

I'm sorry, I have things to do.

Let's go.

Who's that girl?

Someone.

She was very kind to you, why did you treat her so badly?

I treat everyone badly.

That girl is married to Tano Cariddi.

Is that enough to justify the fact that I treated her badly?

No.

Well, it's enough for me.

She's laughing. Why?

She's obviously happy.

But happy with what? She doesn't have anything here.

At home, she has hundreds of toys.

Kids need to exchange toys, open them up to see how they're made.

They need to share them, quarrel about them.

Are you looking after this all by yourself?

With the help of the Lord.

Take this!

This will make you more comfortable than God's love.

Take it, don't act like a hero.

To save a sum of this kind, the convent would have to

take collections for ten years.

Take it back. I don't want your money.

It's for Greta.

Greta doesn't need it.

You saw her, she's happy as is.

Many people are frightened of you. Why?

Goodnight, Brother Bernado.

I found a cat hanging in my cell.

Do you know what this means?

That they'll soon come and do the same to me!

Who's going to come and get you?

The two men that you just put inside, Zicchitedda and the Slug.

Do you know them?

They're going to kill me!

If they tell them to do it then they do it!

My God...

But why would someone want you dead?

Because they know that I'm not going to rot in here

for the rest of my life.

I don't care about them, about their families,

their honor, their oaths, it's all bullshit!

I'll have you put in isolation.

Now tell me what you know.

The Tindari Casino is completely controlled by the Mafia.

Which Mafia? I want names.

The Puppeteer's men.

In the north?

Yes, here, in the north.

Are the Slug and Zicchitedda his men?

Yes. But the worst of all is a tall fat one, a real gorilla.

They call him Salieri.

Is this him?

Yes... that's him

It was these men that attacked us! Why did they do it?

I want to know what Frolo has got to do with the Casino.

And why he's so important for them.

I don't know anything about Frolo. I swear to you.

And Canopio, the councilor that you spoke to me about last time

Is he also part of the Mafia?

No.

But he made sure that the Tindari casino contract was successful.

How?

He paid off half of the local town council.

They found a councilor who had opposed it drowned in a well...

Go on.

Canopio provided the casino with political support.

They say that there is a powerful political figure in Rome backing him.

What's his name?

I don't know.

Really. I don't know.

This myriad of small shareholders,

who represent 4 percent of International Insurance Securities,

only care about getting their end of year dividends.

I control them personally.

You can consider them acquired as of now.

More than that is needed to obtain the 31 percent we need.

Here you are. You'll have to acquire these two companies.

Barton and Restifil.

7 percent of each of these companies' portfolios is comprised of

International Insurance Securities stocks.

They're two huge companies. Why would they give up their share?

Because they both currently face a serious liquidity crisis.

And no one is aware of this, aside from me... and you.

At which point I'll have invested about five million...

Yes, that's right. But you'll control 30 million.

Now you know everything.

I don't have anything further to say to you.

But I do. When is the next Board of Directors Meeting being held?

In a week, right after Christmas.

Good. At that meeting, you'll propose that I be elected as

substitute vice-president.

But that was not part of the agreement!

I didn't make any agreement. I simply told you what my conditions are.

And I'm not so naive as to mount a raid on

International Insurance Securities without covering my back.

But I can't propose that you become vice-president.

- The other shareholders... - The other shareholders

won't be surprised: I'm your daughter's husband.

They'll think that for once even you have been carried away

by your emotions.

Listen. I know who your friends are...

The Mafia!

If you become vice-president and something happens to me,

and you know exactly what I'm talking about,

you'll automatically become the owner of everything.

Why do you always think the worst of everything?

Because your immorality has no bounds.

Only one thing is immoral: failure.

And you know that better than I. You and I are equals.

No. We're not the same at all.

I work for my country. You're nothing but a criminal.

Explain to me then, what is morality?

To produce riches for oneself

when to do so means progress for all.

Down in Sicily, where I was born, there was an earthquake.

After 20 years people were still living in hovels,

however, a few kilometers away a large company from the north

spent millions constructing a tourist port,

where perhaps even you... sometimes moored your yacht.

Is this the morality that you're talking about?

Progress has its price.

And it was in the name of progress that you were silent

20 years ago, although you knew the plane of

Mr. Valenti, the engineer would be blown up in mid-flight.

Go away.

So, I await your response.

Have a nice Christmas, Mr. Rasi.

Mr. Canopio, did you nominate the two local inspectors

that inspected the casino's business?

Yes.

And is it true that these inspectors recorded

that the casino took about a thousand in takings per night?

Um, yes. Yes, that seems right to me.

But the casino was taking in more than twice this amount.

It's written here, in this book.

To whom was the undeclared money going to?

What do I know? I suppose it went to the Casino.

From your notes, it would seem that some of these missing millions

went to several local town council members.

I really have...

These were bribes, right?

What are you doing? You're my lawyer, say something, otherwise...

Your lawyer can't say anything. It's you that must reply.

They were bribes, it's better for you to admit it.

Well, let's say that they were commissions, then.

You know, bribe is a very ugly word.

Listen, if we can agree with one another

to call this money the Special Fund for Market Research,

then it would be a thousand times better.

Because, frankly, what's wrong with compensating

people with a five or ten percent cut when they help you close a deal?

Those who sell, make money,

So why shouldn't those who act as intermediaries also make money?

- Mr. Canopio? - Yes?

- Thank you. - What?

Mr. Federico Canopio, in accordance with what...

Hey, what's going on? What does this mean?

Who are these lunatics? What are they doing?

Mr. Federico Canopio, I'm placing you under arrest

for the crimes of fraud

and embezzlement.

This is impossible! Please help me!

You were there when they took Frolo?

Well, what did he say during the first interrogations?

Nothing. He never said anything.

And then the judge arrived and drove them all out.

And Cattani?

He went... to the widow's house.

Whose widow?

The wife of the dead man, Mrs. Tindari.

Oh, Tindari's wife... I hadn't thought of her...

Judge! Judge, please!

Give us some information!

Judge!

We've arrested two members of the group that attacked

the police escorts.

And we're currently looking for a very dangerous man.

The man that we're after is the head of a group of criminals.

This is him. He's a savage.

But even worse than he, and even more ferocious, more vile,

are those who provide him with arms!

The massacre the other day is an intolerable challenge

to our country, to the State, to justice and to me personally!

Is it the Mafia?

There is an important person who represents the Mafia in this city.

I hope that he's watching from the sewers

- where we've forced him to hide! - That's enough.

Please!

Get away!

I want that bitch of a judge!

I want her here, between my hands.

Your cover's been blown. You have to leave.

But first, you have to find this guy in the green raincoat.

Have you gone mad?

Don't you understand that these people are capable of anything?

They wanted to attack the station!

They can kill you whenever they want to. Don't make them scared.

But I want to scare them!

I want them to understand that we're after them.

And that we're not going to call a truce!

Yes, but you shouldn't expose yourself. There's no need.

Of course, tomorrow, those journalists will all commend you

They'll say that you were brave, they'll praise you.

But after those moments, no one will be there for you.

No one will help you out anymore...

Not even you?

I don't know.

Who knows where I'll be tomorrow?

Goodnight. Bye.

Bye.

Have you seen how agitated the ants are?

Ernesto...

You scared me! What are you doing in the dark?

I was thinking.

Do you want some?

Are you surprised to see me?

A little.

Unhappy to see me?

Please, don't start that again.

I saw you a little while ago on the television.

You seemed different, I hardly recognized you...

I've been so confused by everything that is happening

But... you were even more beautiful than usual...

Determined... strong.

I'm really worried about my investigation.

I'd like you, for once, to be as worried about me.

People are risking their lives.

Those police officers that they massacred...

You're right. I'm sorry.

Perhaps it's silly for me to talk about personal things,

when you're involved in much more important things.

I think that the ants are a good thermometer.

I've never seen them so frantic.

If I didn't know that it was scientific heresy

I'd say that they are agitated for me.

That they feel...

that I'm tired, that I'm frightened.

- Of what? - Of losing you.

Why are you saying these things? We've been good together recently.

Do you know how long it's been since we last saw each other?

Ten days.

And do you know how long it's been since you last called me?

Ten days.

I've had so much to do,

I've been at work almost the whole time.

I'm not asking for a justification.

I was just making an observation.

I care for you. You know that.

Yes. I know.

But love, well, that's another thing.

That's when you feel an earthquake,

and you never felt that way about me.

Why don't you stop hurting yourself?

You're right. I'll stop.

Tomorrow, I'll go back to Rome.

The Parliamentary Commission has begun its work.

I'll join you in Rome soon.

No, it's better that we don't see each other for awhile.

Do you know how long it's been since we last made love?

Ester...

Dad!

Dad! How long have you been here?

Have you been spying on me?

You guessed it.

Your handkerchief is coming out of your pocket.

What's going on with you?

It's been happening a lot since you stopped inspecting me.

I want to talk to you. Are you alone?

Yes. Tano will return later, he's gone to As con a.

As con a?

To Villa Pausania?

I don't know.

Why? Who's at Villa Pausania?

Espinosa.

And who's Espinosa?

A very important man, I didn't know that Tano knew him.

He's a collector.

Do you know him?

Do you remember the antique doll that I have in my office?

Espinosa has been asking me for it for years.

Come now. You could at least offer me a coffee!

Excuse me, I'm still not used to being the lady of the house...

What was it that you wanted to tell me?

Nothing. Nothing important.

Come on, you said before that...

Yes, but now I think that I've found another way...

to solve everything...

Guido?

Guido, Is there mail for me?

No! Help me!

Help! No!

Go! Get a move on!

Don't move! Be good!

Pull her up.

Here I am. I heard that you were looking for me.

No! No!

Yes!

No. No! No... no!

Yell! I like it when you yell.

What beautiful panties...!

It arrived an hour ago.

Salvatore Frolo.

Finally, a breakthrough!

But these are only blank pages!

It's not possible.

They've gotten rid of it all!

Stop here.

Have fun. She's yours.

Corrado...

Help me.

She's in there. The doctor's here.

How is she?

She was covered in bruises and blood. Come with me.

She doesn't want to see anyone.

And she doesn't want this to be made public.

We need to let her husband know...

She begged me not to tell him. She's actually still in shock.

She's very shaken up and frightened.

For a couple of days it's probably best not to leave her alone.

How are you Emma?

Who are you? What do you want?

Don't you remember, we met years ago in Sicily?

I came to you for an interview; your husband was a fugitive.

You offered me a coffee and didn't tell me anything.

I don't speak to journalists.

I'm not a journalist any more. I want to talk to you about Frolo.

I don't know anything about Frolo.

He's dying. It might take ten years, but he's dying.

Your husband's friends have condemned him to a slow death.

Leave me alone. Go away.

Wait. Listen to me. At the prosecutor's office,

I heard something that concerns you. In a few days, under the

law concerning the Mafia, all of your husband's assets

will be confiscated.

You'll have nothing left,

they'll take everything from you, even your house.

Leave me alone.

Wait. Look here. Take a look at this check.

It's all that I have, but I earned it through ten years

of dishonest work.

I've written the check and I'll sign it.

But you have to tell me who wanted Frolo

to be in a coma for fifteen years, and who wanted him to

be reduced to a vegetative state. You know!

It has to do with something that happened many years ago,

something to do with Sicily.

It's not true! They wanted Aciduzzu dead because he killed my husband.

No, that's not the truth!

There's a secret that only your husband knew.

And you know everything. You know, don't you?

If I talk they'll kill me.

With this sum of money, you could go overseas.

Who would come to find you? You must tell me the truth!

No. No, I can't tell you what you want to know.

OK, you won't budge. Think about it.

I'll put my telephone number here.

Look at the check and call me. I'll sign it. Think about it.

Silvia.

I'm here, Silvia. I'm here, next to you.

A little hot coffee?

I don't want anything.

Yes, you do. Go on, it's good for you.

Do you want me to help you?

Please. I want to be alone.

You know what the doctor said.

That someone has to keep you company.

And that you have to get up.

Try to go out... come on...

I want to disappear into a cave...

It's good to cleanse yourself once a year.

And I like to do it at Christmas time.

In here, you feel lighter, cleaner.

It's wonderful in here.

And it used to be even more beautiful before.

A small orchestra used to play for me from morning to night:

Vivaldi, Mozart, and above all, Wagner, who I adore.

If you'd accepted the offer that I made you years ago,

you would have had a more comfortable ride.

I admit that I made a mistake. I was over cautious.

If I remember correctly, you wanted to acquire 10% of the

International Insurance Securities.

- And you exercised your veto. - Indeed.

I'm here now to make it up to you.

I'm willing to cede 12%.

And what convinced you to reconsider?

Tano Cariddi.

He wants everything. And for some reason,

you've decided to help him.

That telephone recording comes from your records, doesn't it?

You sadden me, Rasi...

And do you know why?

Because you're unreliable.

You still believe in honesty, that abstract concept

which now only exists in primary school lessons.

Espinosa...

Don't trust Tano Cariddi. He doesn't respect a thing!

After he has gotten rid of me, he'll do the same to you, and your friends.

That man doesn't only have financial weapons...

You underestimate me.

We shall be the ones that use Tano Cariddi.

Like we made use of you.

I never allowed anyone to manipulate me.

Exactly. That's what was useful to us at that moment.

We could not get our hands on International Insurance Securities then

but having put you at the top, no one else could either.

And while you were playing the part of the incorruptible, we grew.

But that's not enough any more.

Italy is a small country. We're looking to Europe, to the world,

to the international technology and financial markets.

I'm sorry Rasi, but the flexibility that you now show,

which I appreciate, has come too late.

I could offer you even... 15%.

There's no need to humiliate yourself like this.

Your time is over now, be reasonable.

Retire and be dignified about it.

I don't take lessons from anyone! Spare me!

Why should 17?

You sold your daughter to Tano Cariddi, put her in his bed,

and you still dare to raise your voice?

Rasi, please get out of here.

- Hello, Captain. - How can you read in this light?

I can read just fine.

What is it?

It's for my thesis. I have my final exams soon.

So you're leaving us?

Is the Processing Center in Rome taking you away?

Yes. Probably.

Well, see you.

There were are.

Without a tree, what sort of Christmas is it?

Take it away.

No.

Listen Silvia, you've been like this for three days.

Why don't I call your husband, a friend, anyone?

Come on, try to pull yourself together!

I don't want to see anyone.

Silvia...

I know that perhaps I can't help you at the moment,

but I'd like to understand how you're feeling.

I don't feel anything.

Why don't you try and speak about it? Give it a try.

I'd like to help you so much, but I don't know how.

You can't keep everything to yourself,

everything that causes you pain.

I don't feel anything.

No. That's not true.

It's just that it's difficult to get it out.

Let go of me, please!

Get out the hurt they caused you. Get it all out!

Speak, yell, cry, but don't be like this.

Are you scared of me, too?

No. I'm not going to go away. That's enough!

Now, you're going to get up, you're going to get dressed

and we're going to go out into the streets, among the people!

That's better. You're so brave.

Yes, yes, my dear.

I'd love to see you.

I'll wait for you.

The servants can have the night off tonight.

Even the cook and the waiter?

Everyone.

I'm going to my dad's house.

He wants to see me.

What about you?

I'll stay here.

- What's this? - A memory.

Of when you were young?

It has a broken leg.

It was caused by the nastiness of a bigger kid.

He was strong, he was powerful.

He did it on purpose

because he knew that it was my most prized possession.

Why?

It was the most wonderful present that I had ever received.

Every year around this time, the street would fill up with stalls.

On the left side of the street were the expensive toys.

On the right side of the street, on the other hand,

there were only sweets, marbles, plastic toys and paper windmills.

My mother used to take me by the hand...

and I'd pull her...

towards the stuffed bears, towards the little red cars...

towards the toy trains...

But she pulled harder than I.

"This way," she would say,

"you have to look over here."โ€

One year I saw it.

It was used

and it cost so little that my mother bought it for me.

I was happy.

For the first time, I had something in my hands which had a scent

of talcum powder, of big, clean rooms...

Were you that poor?

I was weak.

Do you want to leave?

No, I like it.

How did you convince the guard to let us in?

I told him that it was... for official business.

Is that OK?

Not really. But I'm glad that you did it.

It's so beautiful here.

I have to thank you for today.

It was nothing.

There was a time in my life when I felt...

I don't know... that everything was meaningless.

Getting up, getting dressed, going out, meeting people.

But then...

Then there's always the world, that comes back to get you.

Now I'm going to start crying again.

Cry.

No one can see us anyway...

Cry until you can't see anymore.

Listen.

Brother Bernardo invited me out.

Will you come, Judge?

Let's go.

Stay close to me.

Corrado. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas.

- Hi, Silvia. - Hi.

This isn't when you were supposed to arrive!

Bernado! Bernado! Bernado!

Kedir... what's going on? You changed your mind?

Mass is already over...

- A truck! - A truck?

With lots of big wheels. Arrived in the courtyard.

What truck?

Come on. Come on.

Come on, children.

Wait a moment.

Stop there.

Stop. What's going on?

I don't know.

- But I'll go on ahead. - But what are you thinking?

Wait.

Stay here, children.

Come!

Who could have done such a thing?

I think I know...

Look!

A turtle. He carries his house on his back.

We, on the other hand, carry our houses in our hearts.

- Here? - No, here.

Are you well here? Are you happy here?

To David... Faeti. The ex-reporter of assaults,

the ex-dirty journalist, the ex-everything!

To you, Dad.

To you, my child.

Let's celebrate a special occasion.

From tomorrow, after many years,

I'll once again become a free man.

No more wars, manipulation,

no more battles against ferocious wolves.

Have you decided to resign from being President?

From everything.

I want you to get divorced from Tano. Promise me that you will.

There's no reason for you to stay with him.

I never should have allowed it.

I was weak, but I'm not any longer. Now I'm strong.

Dad, I...

Listen, Ester. The world in which I've lived until now...

is monstrous.

And once, many years ago, I stretched the rules

It was a mistake, that has caused me a lot of pain

and remorse throughout my whole life.

If only people could understand the true face of big finance.

But what will you do now? Work has always been your whole life.

I'll stay here, under that tree and by our lake.

Tano... Tano won?

Yes, but he plays with stacked cards.

What does that mean?

I'm tired, dear. You should leave.

Will you call me tomorrow?

Tomorrow, I don't know if I'll be able to.

Why don't you come over to spend time with me, every now and then?

Under the tree?

Under the tree.

No more battles against ferocious wolves...

Have you decided to resign from being President?

From everything.

I was weak. I was weak, but I'm not any longer. Now I'm strong.

Why don't you come and find me instead?

Under the tree?

Under the tree.

Please turn around! Take me back to the house!

Do it quickly, please.

Dad!

Dad!

Where are you?

Dad?

Dad!

Dad? No, dad!

Why?

Oh, yeah?

I'll move to C3.

Let's see what you do.

Yes?

Who is it? He's not here.

Stay calm and stay where you are.

I'll let him know right away. Stay where you are!

So, are you going to tell me who sent all those presents?

If I told you, you wouldn't believe me...

Captain. We had a telephone call at the station.

It was Ester. She was crying.

She was calling from her father's house...

I'll see you later.

See?

He'd decided everything, and I didn't understand.

He loved this lake so much.

You have to... you have to leave this.

No!

I'll stay with him, I'll keep him company.

He was so alone in his life.

Do you know what? Tano killed him.

I think that he did it on his own.

But what else could he have done?

Tano wanted everything.

Everything?

The International Insurance Securities.

Listen Ester... you need to get away from all of this... now.

You should come with me right away!

You're no use to Tano any more, you can't go back to him.

Of course I'll go back to him. I'm his wife.

The Mafia is behind Tano. And the Mafia doesn't take hostages,

they don't want witnesses, do you hear me?

No. I'll go back to him and I'll kill him.

Let me go! Let me go!

Ester, you're not going anywhere. You must calm down.

OK, OK.

But you go away. I don't want your pity.

I don't want it, you hear me?

Oh, Ester.

OK... now I'm calm. I'm calm.

But you go away.

I'll determine how I live my own life.

OK.

Don't worry. I won't kill him, but I will destroy him.

No, Ester, you don't know what you're saying. You can't!

It's dangerous, Ester.

Yes. I want to ruin him. Yes. Yes! Go away. Go away.

I don't want him to see us together when he arrives.

Stay with for her a while, OK?

I was told a little while ago.

I'm sorry, Ester.

Don't go away, Tano.

Don't you leave me, too.

Tell me, how do you think we should adapt

to the unexpected suicide of our friend Rasi?

It seems to me that the vice-president of International,

this Melandri fellow, is not just a small obstacle,

even for a refined chess player like you.

I've already taken steps.

In a week he'll be nominated President of Carbotex.

Nice move. My compliments.

They tell me that Rasi was a great player...

but I never got a chance to meet him.

Did you?

Once, many years ago.

The other day he was here, I could have beaten him,

but I didn't want to attack him, he was very depressed.

He came to make you a proposal?

Of course. And of course I turned him down.

What use is a worn out soldier when you can have

a young Napoleon?

Well, to tell you the truth, I came here to talk to you

about our young Napoleon.

He's good, Tano Cariddi, I don't deny it, but,

he worries me. He's too unscrupulous.

In my opinion, you should not worry.

When our Bonaparte has won the Italian campaign,

instead of naming him number one, we'll get rid of him.

And in the terrain in which we're working,

the Mafia is worthless without Tano.

Can you imagine, an old Mafia boss trading on the stock market?

I don't know.

There's a risk that this man will become too strong.

Don't worry.

My dear Salimbeni, modern wars

aren't won by breaking things, as Tano does.

Breaking things is good for surprising your opponent,

disorienting him.

But then to win, to really win, you need to have control,

of the sky and of the sea.

In other words, you need someone on top, like you,

and someone below, like me.

Now tell me the real reason why you came here.

Well, I came to talk to you about your European project.

For an operation of this size, I think that you'll need some

consultancy, and probably also a...

How much?

What? I don't understand?

How much do you want for yourself?

What's your price? For you, personally?

How much do we have to pour into your account in Switzerland?

Come on, I don't have an account in Switzerland.

Five million. Is that all right?

Yes, I think so...

Yes, hello.

Yes, that's me.

It's about that thing... it's very important.

Yes, yes, come right away. And alone, like you promised.

Basically, I don't want any police.

Don't forget. Yes, I'll wait for you.

Hurry up. I'm scared.

We've just had a call from the interception service.

Tindari's widow called Faeti and seemed very agitated.

That's the transcript of their conversation.

Prepare the car.

Let's go there right away.

Come in... quickly!

Excuse me.

How can I help you?

No! No!

I won't run away, you piece of shit!

That way!

In my trouser pocket...

there's something important.

Tindari's widow had it.

We're going to take you to the hospital now, OK?

Take it.

That big fat animal... thought he scared me...

Are you proud of me this time, Captain?
