Detectives hunt for writer
Susan Berman's killer.

Who would want
this woman dead?

Maybe she was murdered
because of her connection

to the Las Vegas mob.

A link is uncovered

to one of the most notorious murderers

of the 21st century--

Robert Durst.

He comes
from this billion-dollar

real-estate family
in New York City.

Prosecutors seek justice
in a long-awaited new trial.

We wanted to annihilate them
from day one.

These men and women dedicate
their lives to law and order.

I take great satisfaction

in convicting people who think
they got away with it.

These are
their true stories.

[dramatic sting]

[dramatic music]

Okay.

♪ ♪

This is West L.A.--

a very expensive,
exclusive neighborhood.

There are million-dollar homes
out here.

♪ ♪

I was the senior man
at the call.

So I said, all right,
we're gonna go in,

do a search of the house.

I go in through the kitchen...

and don't hear anything--
quiet.

This is Christmas Eve.

So I remember thinking,
you know what?

The person probably had to run
and make it to LAX

and, you know, forgot to close
the door all the way.

♪ ♪

I see a purse on the counter.

Then I proceed to my right,

and I see a desk
with a computer.

And I think, okay, well, it's
not a burglary or a robbery,

because they would have took
the computer.

So as I go past the desk,
I see legs,

and then I see a lady, dead,

arms spread out,
and blood around her head.

♪ ♪

It looked like she'd been dead
for about 24 to 36 hours.

Whoever the suspect was,
after that amount of time,

they're out of here.

We didn't find any neighbors
that knew anything.

The purse has ID,
credit cards.

We see the name Susan Berman.

Once the coroner came,
they rolled her over.

There was a bullet hole
in the back of her head.

That's like a mob-type thing.

We later find out
she was a daughter

of a guy that used to own
a hotel in Vegas

back in the '40s or '50s.

♪ ♪

Her father was an individual
by the name of Davie Berman,

who was the CFO,
chief financial officer,

for the Jewish Mafia in Vegas.

Was she killed because
she was connected to Vegas?

My cousin Susie
always referred

to her father as a mogul.

Davie Berman was one
of the pioneers of Las Vegas.

He erected the Flamingo
and the Riviera.

And her mother was a showgirl.

Susan Berman was
my second cousin,

but we were
much more like sisters.

And our family was
crazy and zany.

This was our family.

♪ ♪

She was a little girl
when her dad died,

and then her mother died,
like, a year later.

She had a trust fund set up

that should have taken her
through her whole life,

and it would have.

Her trust fund, at the time
of her mother's death,

was somewhere between
$4 million and $5 million.

But Susie had a character flaw.

She was loyal,
and she loved her friends.

And she was an orphan,
and she would do anything

to create her own family
of friends,

and people took
advantage of it.

That money became a trap.

♪ ♪

She was always writing
and telling stories.

She started typing
on that typewriter

and didn't stop till she died.

Eventually,
Susan's pursuit of writing

would lead her to Los Angeles,

where two failed relationships

would give her
loving stepchildren.

But a lack of career success

would drain the last
of her wealth.

And she started renting
the house in Benedict Canyon,

a Beverly Hills-adjacent
neighborhood.

At that point,
everything was gone.

Everything was gone.

She was sleeping on a mattress
on the floor.

So she was living
very, very minimally.

On Christmas Day,
December 25, 2000,

Deni was notified
of Susan's tragic death.

I was just--

I did start bawling,
and I got a little crazy,

and I cried, and I just was
like, who would shoot Susie?

♪ ♪

I was a detective with the
Los Angeles Police Department,

assigned to Robbery-Homicide Division.

The chief decided

Robbery-Homicide
was going to handle the murder

of this Mafia princess.

Investigators
immediately identified

three early possibilities

as to who could have motive
or opportunity

to commit the crime.

Detectives thought this
was mob related

because Susan had told some
of her friends

that I've got a big story
coming up.

This is going to
break everything.

Maybe she was ruffling
some feathers,

and somebody got hit.

Most of us went
for the landlady connection.

We thought they were fighting.

She wasn't paying
the rent on time.

We were all helping
with the rent.

We were doing
the best we could.

Susan had
a longtime manager.

I never did understand
that relationship,

because she didn't pay him.

I think he was waiting
for that one big payday

that would come in.

He was of interest
to the police

because he took it upon himself
after she was murdered

to go over to the house
and just start walking around

and looking around.

And that just doesn't
sound right for anybody.

Investigators needed
more information

to be able to move
any of the three leads

towards a prime suspect.

As the investigation continued,

Coulter was notified
of a peculiar development.

Beverly Hills PD
received a letter.

It said that there is a cadaver

at 1527 Benedict Canyon.

This was the cadaver letter
that went to Beverly Hills PD.

The cadaver letter
was postmarked

the day after the murder.

We have the envelope
and the note

all chemically treated,
hoping to get fingerprints,

to which we don't
get anything.

But, okay, could we get DNA off
of the flap of the envelope,

or can we get DNA
off of the stamp?

We don't get anything.

So we're just striking out
on all of that stuff.

But we do have the writing.

You know, we're looking
and go,

okay, well, they
spelled Beverly wrong.

It's printed like
a second grader.

It was like, who the hell
uses the word "cadaver"?

That might lead us
to the killer.

♪ ♪

Seeking more evidence,

Coulter revisited
the crime scene.

There, an unexpected encounter

marked a major turn
in the case.

New York State Police
were there--

Joe Becerra
and a D.A. investigator

from Westchester County.

We learn Susan Berman was
an individual

that they wanted to interview

because of her close relationship

with the suspect of another
murder investigation

by the name of Robert Durst.

♪ ♪

I came out to L.A. and met

with the Los Angeles Police
Robbery-Homicide detectives

and basically share
the information we had--

how Robert Durst is a suspect
in a decades-old murder case

that we're investigating.

We were looking at Bob
for his wife's murder,

and Susan was
a potential witness for us.

They were incredibly close.

[airplane engine whirring]

The plan of law enforcement
was to go out to Los Angeles

and basically do a surprise
interview of Susan Berman

in 2001
at the beginning of the year.

And then I received a phone
call from one of her friends

screaming at me, saying,

"Susan's dead. Susan's dead.
She's been murdered."

♪ ♪

Susan and Bobby had
an almost instant connection.

Susan ends up
helping Bob,

and she now has Bob
under her control.

That's when we found
the check from Robert Durst

to her for 25,000.

Susan Berman was
probably our main witness

in our ongoing
murder investigation,

and here she is, murdered.

[dramatic music]

[train rattling]

♪ ♪

A year before Susan's death,

Investigator Becerra reopened

the unsolved 20-year-old
missing-persons case

of Kathie Durst.

There was a theory
that Kathie was murdered

by her husband, Robert Durst,
in South Salem back in 1982

and that her body
has never been found.

♪ ♪

There was no concrete evidence
that she was murdered,

but it really piqued
my interest.

I had no idea who
the Durst family was.

[upbeat music]

It was once I started looking
into Kathie's disappearance

and doing some background

that I realized
that Robert Durst

comes from this billion-dollar
real-estate family

in New York City.

That's the lake house
in South Salem.

This is the Upper West Side penthouse.

Early on in my investigation,

I learned that Susan Berman
and Bobby were extremely close.

♪ ♪

Here we have Kathie, Robert,
and Susan Berman,

all in happier times.

Susie met Bobby Durst

when she was living
at Rieber Hall in UCLA.

Susan and Bobby had
an almost instant connection.

She found out that
Bobby Durst was wealthy,

and Susan herself
came from money.

The one key thing was,

Susan lost her parents
at age 12,

and Robert Durst lost
his mother at age seven.

So there is
an instant bond with them.

[dramatic music]

After she got
her master's degree,

Susan decided to follow Bobby
to New York.

And he
and his new wife, Kathie,

had a penthouse.

Susan moved into their
spare room for a few months.

And five years later,
Kathie Durst disappeared.

This is Kathie's
missing-person flyer.

Robert's story
to law enforcement at the time

was that Kathie came back
from a party,

and she wanted to drive
to the city

because she had classes
the next day.

He didn't want her to drive,

and he wanted to stay
up at the lakeside house.

He then drove her
to the Katonah train station,

and she boarded a train
from Katonah to New York City.

And then he called Kathie
to check in on her,

and he said that she was
safely at home in the city.

♪ ♪

Also, which was interesting,
there was a phone call

that a dean
at Albert Einstein received

from a woman purporting
to be Kathie,

saying she was not going to
be coming in for her studies

because she was sick.

And that was on Monday,
the 1st of February.

I learned that Kathie
was going through this divorce

with Robert.

Bob wasn't accepting any terms
of the divorce settlement.

Susan said Robert Durst
was very, very cheap.

He kind of just wanted
to, like, avoid

taking that deal
no matter what.

Investigators theorized
that conflict had escalated

between Robert and Kathie,
and he had murdered her

to avoid a massive payout.

Becerra expected that if Durst
confided in anyone,

it would have been Susan.

The fact that shortly before
we're going to interview her,

she's found dead in her home,

I could not help
but think it was him.

♪ ♪

While I was out in California,

I was interviewing friends
of Susan.

Friends of Susan Berman
spoke very highly of Bob,

because, basically,
Susan gushed over him,

you know, how he was always
there for her,

how tight they were.

Detective Coulter
immediately asked me

if I thought that Bobby Durst
could be a person of interest.

And I'm like,
what are you saying?

They're best friends.
What are you talking about?

It never even occurred to me.

♪ ♪

In 1981,

the book "Easy Street"
by Susan came out.

"Easy Street"
was Susan's version

of growing up in Las Vegas.

It was a best seller.

Bobby Durst came to the
"Easy Street" book parties.

She always included Bobby
because he was like family.

He was a brother
from another mother.

He was very happy for her.

And then it was going
to be turned into a movie.

She moved to Los Angeles,

but Susan became
kind of controlling

on how the movie would be,
and the deal was killed.

And she was hitting up people
for money.

She was behind in her rent,
like, 13 months.

It was unbelievable.

When we looked
at her bank records,

the figure that stuck out
was a $25,000 deposit.

That's when we found the check

from Robert Durst to her
for 25,000...

deposited into her account
in November of 2000.

Eventually there'd been
two checks, totaling 50,000.

For Bobby,
that was quite generous--

helping pay the rent
and buy groceries and whatnot.

He didn't want Susie
to starve.

Although the timing
of Susan's death

seemed to coincide
with the Durst investigation,

by all accounts, he was
a great friend to her

and was supporting
her financially.

Investigators revisited
their other leads--

a possible Mob hit,
Susan's landlady,

and Susan's manager.

Old-time mobsters--

most of those guys are dead,
or they're in their 80s,

and they were
immediately saying

there would be no reason to
kill Davie Berman's daughter.

It wasn't like she was
onto something.

She was researching
to write a book

about the women behind
the big players in Vegas.

That's not something that's
going to get you killed.

There was nothing of value

from the Mafia background.

Detectives
obtained a warrant

for the landlady's home,
and a search yielded a gun.

But it did not match
the 9-millimeter weapon

that had killed Susan Berman.

And she was
in her late 70s, early 80s.

This lady has nothing
to do with it.

Meanwhile, Susan's manager

emerged at the top
of a short list of leads.

Investigators brought him in
for an interview.

We gave him a polygraph.

It was inconclusive.

We did handwriting,

which although not exactly
like the cadaver note,

there were similarities.

So you can't strike him off.

As the other leads lost
traction or were eliminated,

investigators turn
their attention

back to Robert Durst.

We had tried to set up
interviews with Robert.

And then one day, we get
a letter from his attorney

about not contacting him.

He doesn't want
to be interviewed.

He was in San Francisco
when she was killed.

They have an alibi for Durst

that he was not
in Los Angeles at the time.

Los Angeles Police had
their work cut out for them.

They were at a loss.

Whenever time permitted,
we'd compare notes

to see if we
could help each other out.

We were getting
a little frustrated

because our case
was still a cold case.

Susan's was starting
to get cold.

And then Galveston happens.

[dramatic sting]

[dramatic music]

I get a call saying,
did you hear

that they just arrested
Robert Durst

in Galveston, Texas,
for murdering a neighbor?

And I'm like,
are you kidding me?

What the hell is he doing
in Galveston, Texas?

And a bunch of us flew
right down to Galveston.

We met with detectives there,

and they told us
that Robert Durst is living

in a $400-a-month--

almost like a rooming house,

dressed as a mute woman
named Dorothy Ciner.

He supposedly killed

and chopped up his neighbor,
Morris Black...

and threw him
in Galveston Bay.

And they basically recovered

this person's whole body
except the head.

♪ ♪

They had him basically
dead to rights

with the forensic evidence
at his apartment,

Morris's apartment,
the bow saw, the gun,

the receipts, the body bag,
you know, everything.

Galveston is the city
where you go to hide,

where you don't want
to be found.

We learned that
Morris Black happened to live

across the hall from Bob
in this rooming house.

The two of them
became friendly,

and Bob basically revealed
himself to Morris.

♪ ♪

If he could do this

to this old guy
here in Galveston,

he could kill Susan Berman.

♪ ♪

One of the weapons they
recovered down in Galveston

was a 9-millimeter,
which was our casing.

So we really started
delving into Robert Durst.

♪ ♪

Detective Coulter knew
the gun recovered in Galveston

could be a vital piece of
evidence in the Berman case.

So he coordinated a test fire
with Galveston PD.

We have it test-fired...

and our people say,

nope, not your weapon.

The casing and bullets
test negative.

Now we're back to square one.

When she was killed,
he was in San Francisco.

So we're thinking,

well, okay, he gets
his flight from San Francisco.

I verified that he was
on that flight,

and I says, okay, good,
I got him in California

but not in L.A.

And if you've ever driven L.A.
to San Francisco,

it's about a six-,
seven-hour drive.

So there would have been
plenty of time

for him to be there
the night before, kill her.

So I did search warrants
on the phone numbers.

The cell phone that he had
the days surrounding

before and after
Susan's death,

it's like,
there's no activity.

It's like the phone
has been turned off.

♪ ♪

That's just another little red
flag that goes up on the guy.

♪ ♪

Detective Coulter shifted
focus to the cadaver note

that had been anonymously sent

to the Beverly Hills
Police Department.

Our handwriting expert
and I went down to Galveston

so that I could compare
the cadaver note

to Robert Durst's handwriting.

♪ ♪

This stuff, obviously,
is from the cadaver letter.

So he is told to write that
over and over and over again.

Coulter presented
the writing samples

from Durst
and Susan's former manager

to experts at the California
Department of Justice

to determine a possible match
to the cadaver note.

Here you got these samples
from this individual,

these samples
from this individual,

the manager.

I said, here is
my cadaver note.

You tell me who it is.

And they said,
it's most likely Durst.

♪ ♪

But it wasn't enough
to arrest and convict

for the murder
of Susan Berman.

I'm confident it's him,

but I can't quite get
over that hump to prove it yet.

We were still working
the Kathie Durst case,

but we were also waiting
on the Galveston case

to see how that played out.

♪ ♪

[indistinct chatter]

I really thought
the prosecution

had a very good case.

The physical evidence
was overwhelming.

If your last name is Durst,

you can hire the best
defense attorney in Texas,

and that was Dick DeGuerin.

And Dick DeGuerin had
an incredible reputation.

He basically claims that

he went into his room,
and Morris is there

with his gun, and they
started fighting for the gun,

and it was a struggle, and the
gun accidentally went off,

shooting Morris.

We know that what the state
is going to say

is dismembering the body

is evidence of guilt.

It could also indicate fear.

It could indicate panic.

Whatever he did
after Morris Black was dead

cannot change
the way Morris Black died.

♪ ♪

Will the defendant
please rise?

"For the verdict of the jury
as such,

"we, the jury, find
the defendant, Robert Durst,

not guilty."

[camera shutters clicking]

My jaw dropped.
I just--I couldn't believe it.

♪ ♪

I said, you've got
to be kidding me.

Well, if they'd found
the head,

I'm guessing
there would have been

a bullet in the back of it.
[clicks tongue]

So that doesn't
sound like self-defense to me.

When Bob got acquitted
in the death of Morris Black,

things kind of went cold
for a while.

The Durst family,
I'm sure they were embarrassed

by Robert's antics.

They paid him
what was due to him

just to wash their hands
of everything Robert Durst.

There was frustration on
Kathie's family and friends,

'cause I spoke regularly
with them, and they're like,

he's getting away
with it again.

It's happening again.

His money, his power, his
privilege is getting him off.

Durst reportedly spent
over $1.8 million

on his defense.

He did it,
and he got away with it.

How much money
has this ass---- got?

[dramatic sting]

[dramatic music]

My name is John Lewin.

I was the lead prosecutor
on the case

of People vs. Robert Durst--

the murder of Susan Berman.

But we have to back up,

and this all ties together.

After Durst's acquittal
in Galveston,

his story gained notoriety.

In 2010, Andrew Jarecki
and Marc Smerling

introduced a film called
"All Good Things,"

which was
a fictionalized version

of the Robert Durst story.

Lily Rabe portrayed
Susie's character.

And the film
basically portrays

Bob Durst as responsible
for the murder of three people.

It is not
a flattering portrayal.

Most people who would see
a movie like that,

that is allegedly depicting
their life,

the next call would
be to their lawyer,

saying, what can we do
to sue these people?

How can we stop them?

If anything happens to me,

don't let them get away
with it.

Bob's response was different.

♪ ♪

Robert got in touch

with Andrew Jarecki
and Marc Smerling,

who did the movie.

He liked the way
he was portrayed

and basically wanted to give
his side of the story.

Andrew ends up taking
that opportunity,

and he ran with it.

He, in essence,
started reinvestigating

the entire
Kathie/Susan/Morris story.

♪ ♪

Marc had reached out
to Sareb Kaufman,

Susan Berman's stepson.

Sareb had been going through
all of Susan's possessions

and had come across a document

that we call "the Sareb note."

It was an envelope
with a letter inside

from Bob Durst

from March 3rd of 1999.

And when you look
at the envelope

with the cadaver note,

not only is the handwriting
of her address identical,

but in both the cadaver note
and the Sareb note,

Beverly is spelled wrong.

So if you see them both
together, you're going,

oh, okay, this is clearly
written by the same person.

Now there's new evidence.

♪ ♪

I ended up being made aware
of the Sareb note

by Andrew and Marc.

I had the cadaver note,
and I also saw the footage

where Durst was confronted,

and it was
extremely compelling.

So you wrote one of these,

but you didn't write
the other one?

I wrote this one, but I did
not write the cadaver one.

And can you tell me
which one you didn't write?

No.

♪ ♪

The Sareb note and advanced
footage from "The Jinx"

was finally enough evidence

for the Los Angeles
District Attorney

to press charges
against Robert Durst

for the murder
of Susan Berman.

My goal was to try
and file the case

prior to "The Jinx" coming out,

because my concern was
that once "The Jinx" came out,

Bob was going to take off for
Cuba and we'd never get him.

I don't know if Durst is
a narcissist or what he is,

but he had to stick around
and watch that last episode.

He could have long been
out of the country.

♪ ♪

When "The Jinx" started,

we were trying
to monitor where Bob was.

The FBI is up on him,
and we knew--

I had the advantage
that I knew what was coming.

So I knew that episode five
was where Bob

was confronted
with the Sareb note.

When episode five aired,
he immediately ends up

leaving his place in Houston
very suddenly,

taking off for parts unknown.

That turned out
to be New Orleans.

FBI agents picked up
the eccentric millionaire

at the JW Marriott Hotel
in downtown New Orleans.

I was called Saturday,
March 14th,

and I was told
he's been arrested.

Robert Durst's arrest
this weekend

was the result
of a lengthy investigation

by multiple agencies,
including the FBI

and police
in New York and Los Angeles.

And we're going
to file the case.

Bob Durst didn't kill
Susan Berman.

He's ready to end
all the rumor and speculation

and have a trial.

My understanding was,
his net worth

when he went to trial
for Susan's death

was about 100 million.

His lawyers were paid,
it's been reported,

somewhere between $10 million
and $12 million for the case.

When you get
a case like Durst,

there's nobody better to have
on it than John Lewin.

If it was one
of my family members,

I would want John Lewin on it.

I think Robert Durst thinks
he's smarter than anybody,

but he never dealt
with John Lewin before.

[dramatic sting]

[dramatic music]

They charged Durst with
special circumstance murder,

meaning he killed a witness,

who was Susan Berman,
who was going to be a witness

in my murder case in New York.

Lewin's team quickly
recorded pretrial interviews

in a courtroom to protect
from witness tampering.

So let's start with,
as important witnesses,

Miriam Barnes.

Miriam Barnes is a woman
who lived in the same area,

a very nice part of Manhattan,

as Susan Berman did.

Susan had bought
a little place there,

and Miriam lived there,
and they were friends.

When Kathie disappeared,
Susan had come to Miriam.

♪ ♪

Linda Obst was also
extremely important.

Linda was a producer
in Hollywood.

I had known Susan Berman
for many, many years,

as I was the producer

of her book
called "Easy Street."

I was there for development

and to help get
the movie sold.

She once told me
that she called

Albert Einstein Medical Center
and said she was Kathie.

[car horns honking]

Originally the NYPD

believed that Kathie
had made that call

because it was reported

that Kathie had called
the dean.

When we went back in 2013

and interviewed the dean,
Al Cooperman,

it took us five minutes
and basically two questions.

Dr. Cooperman, what made
you think it was Kathie?

The person said it was Kathie.

Did you know what
her voice sounded like?

No.

Other than the fact that the
person said they were Kathie,

do you have any evidence,
any information

that, in fact, it was Kathie
on the phone?

No.

So Susan basically called,
pretending to be Kathie

so that it would make it seem
as if Kathie was alive,

had made it back
to New York City,

when, in fact,
she had been killed

in Westchester County
the night before.

♪ ♪

Susan ends up helping Bob,

and she now has Bob
under her control.

Susan made the mistake
of telling Bob

that the police contacted her

and they were on their way
to interview her.

I think she was trying
to extort him a little bit

or get more money
prior to her death.

I think that Bob understood,
as did Susan's friends,

that Susan, with her mouth,

if she would have talked
to investigators,

she would have ended up
spilling the beans,

whether she wanted to or not.

Please be seated
in the witness stand.

And then we get
to Nick Chavin.

Susan said to me specifically

that Bob killed Kathie.

Now, the three of them--
Bob, Susan, and Nick--

were extremely close.

And Nick originally
did not believe Susan.

Sometime in late 2014,

did you have a dinner

with Robert Durst?

Yes.

Bob said he wanted to talk
to me about Susan.

The dinner concluded.

This is hard.
We walked out the door.

And on the sidewalk...

I said, you wanted to talk
about Susan?

And Bob said...

"I had to.

It was her or me.
I had no choice."

♪ ♪

John Lewin--
he didn't promise anything.

He said, I'm going to do
everything in my power.

I said, please do it.

Just do whatever
you have to do.

I was very scared
because the one thing I knew--

he had money and privilege.

Things could be bought.

♪ ♪

Justice requires
that trials be conducted

in open court.

The plan that
we had as a team

was that we were going to have
a presentation

that laid out
everything we had.

♪ ♪

We wanted to annihilate
them from day one.

It all goes back

to his relationship
with Kathie Durst.

Bob killed Kathie.

Whether it was murder
or manslaughter,

he killed Kathie.

My personal opinion is,
I feel that Bob

wasn't accepting any terms
of the divorce settlement.

They got in a heated argument.

How he did it,
I can't say 100%.

But he did end her life.

♪ ♪

Susan helped him cover it up
by calling Albert Einstein.

Eventually Susan is going
to talk to the police.

She's got to go. He kills her.

He thinks he's about
to get arrested and charged

at any time for Kathie's death,
so he's hiding in Galveston.

♪ ♪

Nobody can connect Bob Durst

to where he is staying
in Galveston.

The one person who can
is Morris Black.

Morris Black now knows
who he is

and is putting pressure on Bob

to end up getting
a place together.

He wants Bob to contribute
a large amount of money

to a local charity down there.

And eventually
Morris has to go,

and Bob gets rid of him.

So everything was
tied together.

We started testimony
on March 11th of 2020,

and I was very concerned
about COVID.

Los Angeles courts
adjourned two days later

and delayed the trial
of Robert Durst

for 14 months.

We picked up
right where we left off.

Durst is not jinxed.

He is a three-time killer

who has managed
to escape accountability.

A week and a half
before we start trial,

the defense stipulated Bob
wrote the cadaver note.

♪ ♪

What that meant was,
Bob is saying,

I found the body,

because he couldn't have
written the cadaver note

if he didn't find the body.

The only person who can
explain that is Bob Durst.

That meant Bob Durst
has to testify.

On August 9, 2021,

Robert Durst took the stand
to testify

and attempt to build sympathy
with the jury.

[dramatic sting]

[dramatic music]

The one thing
I was concerned about

was that jurors
would feel sorry for him

because he had lost his mother.

And that was real.

That's really, really sad.
I mean, it's horrible.

So one of the things
that really, I thought,

was powerful and direct

was Bob talking
about how when he was little,

it was Daddy and Dougie
and Mommy and Bobby.

And so, when his mother died,
he basically lost his ally.

Well, as soon as
I hear it, though,

I realize the Frisbee
wasn't invented in 1950

and that Uno wasn't invented
in 1950.

So he's----ing lying

literally
about this compelling memory

to these jurors.

The Frisbee was not invented
until 1957.

Uno was not invented
until 1971.

Mr. Durst, can you explain

why it was that you testified

to what you've now said
was a vivid memory?

You have a list of things you
will lie about on this trial,

and then the rest of the
things, you'll be truthful?

Okay.

I did not expect
that Bob would admit

that literally during his
testimony in this very case,

he had lied.

So, on September 17, 2021,

the jurors came back
with their verdict.

The clerk will please
read the verdict.

"The people of the State
of California vs. Robert Durst.

"We, the jury, find
the defendant, Robert Durst,

"guilty of the crime
of first-degree murder

of Susan Berman."

Bob was convicted
of everything.

We won on everything.
It was a clean sweep.

The sentence is life without
the possibility of parole.

And look
at what it cost him.

Look at what it cost Bobby
by not taking that deal

to divorce Kathie Durst.

Anybody else
with this kind of resources

would have been living
and laughing

and not been a pathetic loser
in an orange jumpsuit

'cause they did something
really stupid and unnecessary,

I'll tell you that.

This man robbed me
and so many people

of the most magnanimous
human being,

one of the most incredible characters

that ever walked the Earth.

I said, if there's any reason--
if she's smiling at all,

she's smiling today.

We're all set to have him
brought to New York

and file the murder charge
against him.

And then I got that phone call.

In January of 2022,

Bob Durst died
while in the custody

of Department of Corrections.

He didn't die from COVID.

He had survived COVID.

He had lots
of other health issues.

I was surprised he didn't
die before that, actually.

But I was glad that he
got to hear his fate

and that he knew
there was nowhere to go

and that he definitely
wasn't getting out alive.

He died a convicted murderer.

♪ ♪

The biggest disappointment
I have in this case

in the 22 years
I've been working on it was,

I wasn't able to give
Kathie's family

the closure
they were looking for,

to let 'em know where she was.

And that's all I wanted
out of that man,

but he insisted on taking that
to the grave with him.

Her body has never been found.

I take great satisfaction,
particularly in cold cases,

in convicting people who think
they got away with it...

particularly when they're

as arrogant
as someone like Bob Durst was.

Bob was held accountable
for all three of those deaths.
