MAN: When you got on, do you remember the kinds of trial dances you had to do?
GENE: Oh, yeah. MAN: What was that?
You had to do jitterbug, cha-cha-...
- Pretty much it, wasn't it? Jitterbug and cha-cha? -Yeah, they did mostly jitterbug.
There was a standard they had to do.
You had to actually write in, get a letter of recommendation...
...and then go out for the dance audition.
And so about five of us girls went over to audition, and then--
- Toni Anders? -Yeah, Toni Anders.
You know, I passed the dance audition and...
The first day I got on the show, I was very nervous and scared. I was so afraid.
I didn't know anybody, and I was real shy. And, um...
But after two weeks you got to, you know, get in with the crowd and--
Loved to dance. And I loved to dance every day, so, um...
It happened from 1958, September...
...until February of '60 that, you know, I danced on the show, $0...
- And then that's where I met Gene. -Not only that, but the thing is--
When the last show goes on the air...
- What, were you four or five months pregnant? -I was three months pregnant with my first son.
While she was on the show.
You couldn't tell it. I mean, you could not tell it, but...
Buddy...
Okay, when I first met him, he was kind of scary.
Because he's got this deep, gruff voice and he was very adamant about everything.
But, no, he was a great guy
Uh, people don't realize where he comes from...
...or what his life has been involved with.
But he...
...loved...
...the people and the kids on the show.
They were his kids.
Um...
The girls were his daughters.
The boys were his sons.
Um...
And he-- But he believed in discipline.
He was a military guy. He was in the military.
And a lot of people don't realize Buddy was a war hero.
- I don't know, other than that, he's just... LINDA: Buddy Deane.
GENE: Buddy Deane. And he's a normal, regular guy.
He's a normal, regular guy who just fell into a TV show that happened to happen.
- It was a phenomenon of its time. It really was. -lt really was. Yeah.
