this five-foot trommel washes pay dirt through the drum.

The finer material drops through the mesh

into a rotating dish known as a Knudsen bowl.

The centrifugal force of the spinning bowl

pushes the larger material out,

allowing the gold to catch in the grooves.

[Tyler] I really wanna make sure we've got all bases covered

before we take it out to Parker 'cause

he's very critical with things like this and I should be all over it.

I am so glad I did the Yukon and Alaska this summer, like,

I know about trommels and wash plants now,

but I do have, like, a list in my head already

that I'm going to be making sure I've ticked off

'cause I know what Parker's like.

That is such a big drop off.

He's done a bloody good job to get this here in one piece.

[Parker] It's been a long time since I've been on a bunch of

switchbacks in an excavator.

[Tyler] I've actually never been so excited to hear some machinery.

Once we get that trommel down into the creek,

we can start doing some bulk testing.

And after what we've seen with that sluice yesterday,

it could be very promising.

[Danny] That looks great.

It's good. That's a $6,000 trommel.

- [Parker] You bought if for six grand? - [Tyler] Bought it, it's ours.

[Parker] The test we did yesterday was pretty decent gold for being,

you know, on the surface.

But now I'm digging around in bedrock. It's actually not that far away.

compared to yesterday when we we just had the sluice.

it's time for a cleanup.

I haven't done this thing in about 10 years.

With no equipment, this is kind of

the only way to clean really fine gold.

It's not super effective but

my grandpa did it for 20 years this way so

- it's not horribly ineffective. - [Danny] Mmm-hmm.

Parker makes a third of a gram per yard.

Anything less than this would make Bonanza a bust.

Parker and his crew weigh up their 20 yard test run.

we could stay in one place, here,

and, like, actually learn the place and know what's going on.

It's just, like, not super clear-cut for me.

I think all the team's feeling a little bit disheartened, to be honest.

So it's really important that I can bring something to the team

and operating an excavator is that at this moment.

And that means, like, totally different

Where Tyler and Diego are at right now, we don't have that.

Like, we're at a narrow little creek that's 50 feet wide

and what's there is there, and that's it.

And there's not a lot of volume

and the grades don't seem that good so far.

These our guys?

[Parker] There's definitely a huge amount of ground here.

And it's obviously gonna be super deep.

And it's really appealing.

I mean, I have a way better feeling about this place

than I do where Tyler and Diego are right now.

where deep ground's never been tested.

And that's what I've always kind of looked for is this kind of project.

Yeah, it's really intriguing.

for the past three years...

gold trickled down from the Andes

into a series of ancient riverbeds

that are now buried deep within the ground of Kemci.

The riverbed channels are sporadic

and hard to locate.

So miners like Cancio

dig huge holes searching for the mother lode.

They have at least three different pits going on at the same time.

They've got a bunch of dump trucks,

at least two excavators that we've seen.

There's not massive jungle that you're, like,

cutting down 500-year-old trees.

And there's a bunch of ground.

So, we'll see.

The major gold deposits that are left in the world

aren't sitting on the surface anymore. They're deep.

And that's exactly what this place is.

This is giving a hell of a lot of food for thought.

[Parker] From here up, that's all waste rock?

Wow.

So they've only... They've only got, like, ten feet of pay.

I don't know 'wasted'.

They can go for very, very long times

very irregular and they can go for, sometimes, weeks with nothing.

- With no gold? - [Danny] With no gold.

They have to wait until they get back on it again.

[Parker] It's a very big land package they've got

pretty much untouched and I think that

there's a lot of potential.

[Danny speaking Spanish]

[Parker] If that whole valley has pay at the bottom,

there's decades of mining here.

There's definitely a lot to think about for me.

[narrator] Back in Bonanza,

Tyler and Diego are still on the hunt for gold.

That whole thing's come off.

But there must be a reason it came loose.

[Tyler] It must've just jiggled off.

So well, we're just gonna wrench these tighter.

We can't afford a breakdown right now, we've still got

ten yards of pay to go before Parker gets back.

I think this would be fine by now.

[Tyler] I'll start the pump.

[pump whirring]

[Tyler] Good job.

I don't feel the gold in here.

No, I hope so.

[Tyler] There's a lot of pressure on this pan here.

I wanna find some gold.

[narrator] At Bonanza creek, Tyler and Diego

have finally completed their solo test run.

[Diego] What is that then?

This is black sand magnetite.

[narrator] Using a magnet, they separate any heavy metals from the gold.

[Diego] Is gold in there?

[Tyler] I can't see much.

Pretty [bleep] result.

There's a little bit of color in the pan

but nothing that's really that exciting.

I mean, it's quite disheartening at this point.

You'd want to be seeing at least some color

by this stage to want to stay longer

or put some more time and effort into it.

Hopefully, Danny and Parker find something that actually

is going to work.

If that doesn't pull through, we're in a lot of trouble.

[narrator] Unaware that Bonanza is a bust,

Parker is at the 450-acre desert claim

of Cancio Paredes...

...a local mine boss who reached out for help.

[Cancio speaking]

[narrator] After surveying the ground,

Parker's kicking the tires on the most important piece of equipment.

[Danny] Some pretty thick material

- sticking on those sluice shoes, isn't it? - Yeah.

Yeah, 'cause as soon as you make some money,

some machine breaks down or whatever happens

and it's just goes right back out of the door, right?

[laughs]

[Parker] Cancio's hinted that he's open to me getting

involved in some way.

I don't know if it would be a partnership

or an investment or what,

but I think the biggest problem is it's just, like,

we're really close to the end of the trip.

We've moved an excavator and a wash plant into this other creek.

There's definitely a lot to think about for me.

The riffles are... [indistinct]

[Danny] Are they?

Oh, yeah. That doesn't make a vortex, is it like that?

[Parker] We put this in the other way around

with this end leading.

And that creates, like, a vortex in the top end.

The gold will catch under that lip

- when it's reversed. - [Cancio] Ah.

[Danny] Truth of the matter is, these guys

don't really have a clue of what they're doing.

They're very, very new to it.

They're talking a lot about how they've only been doing it for a few years.

Now, when you hear that,

and you make that comparison of experience

between these guys and-- and Parker,

that makes this place a very, very interesting place to be.

[bleep]

- What? - [man chuckles]

[Danny] Oh, my [bleeping].

[Parker] I think it's a big gamble

for this place to really, like, cross over

into a big functioning gold mine.

Whoa!

Look at that.

But there's a bunch of gold.

It's a little bit better than what we're mining

in the Yukon on the average.

And there's a bunch of ground and that's, like,

a surefire way to get a gold miner excited.

[narrator] After a seven-hour shift,

Cancio's crew pulled three ounces of gold...

[Danny] That's good, isn't it?

Yeah, it's not bad.
