and it was just too corny

and we couldn't get anywhere

So after about an hour or so,

and then we thought of,

Just took it to, like, a more
satirical place... Right.

..where we could have fun

Another problem you had around that
time, too, of course,

was this perception of Linda as
well, wasn't it? Yeah.

That this was happening
all the time. Yeah.

This girl would, to start with,
dare to marry you,

then she was a vegetarian,

and then she played with the band
and all that. Yeah.

That must have been a troublesome
time as well.

She just said, "No, I'm going to do
it."

By the time we were on tour in
America in '76,

she was doing a lot of very
complicated keyboard work,

like in songs like Live and Let Die.

Very hard, and it was her doing it,
there was no-one

faking it. So she did great, really,
you know?

Songwriting is obviously a very
personal process.

You strike me as a very private man.

When it comes to writing those
really meaningful, truthful songs,

do you ever feel like there's a
challenge

about giving too much of yourself
away?

Do you ever feel there's a little,
sort of, tension,

being honest and keeping
things...you know,

it's good to keep things to
yourself.

Erm, yeah, it's funny

because I think, just in real life,
I would find that a challenge.

You know, I like to, sort of, not
give too much away.

Like you say, I'm quite private.

I think, well, why should people
know my innermost thoughts?

That's for me, they're innermost.

But in a song, that's where you can
do it.

That's the place to put 'em.

So that's one of the things I love
about songs.

that was like it worked the same?

I kind of knew when I was going into
a new writing partnership

that it could be good but it was
never going to be like me and John.

Cos we were just kids growing up.

16 or something,

and he'd be 17-and-a-half. Mm.

So that's very special.

And coming through all of that
together,

you know, Woolton village fete,

and playing together,

all the little gigs you play around
Liverpool, Hamburg, all of that,

and all of that, you've done so
much, and written so much,

that there's nobody ever going to
be able to equal that. Mm.
