Sascha has a lot of fears and
I don’t like people who have fears.

I can’t understand them.
I don’t have many fears.

I’m afraid of trivial things,
like this interview,

but I’m not afraid of being on a stage
or other important things…

I like making decisions and
shepherding my flock.

I like to tell people which way to go.

Whether it’s the right way,
that’s another story.

Sascha is similar, but he often
has fears that I feel are irrational.

Fears that I don’t understand
and dismiss, insensitively.

I don’t react to them, I even make
fun of him and that makes it worse.

I find it difficult to put myself in other
people’s shoes anyway… So it’s difficult.

You have to give him credit for singing
at all and putting himself in that position.

If I were the one singing it would be very
different, probably way too exaggerated.

I love drawing attention
to myself but he doesn’t.

I see that it’s very difficult for him.
When he fell off the stage in Roskilde,

it was because he was incredibly
nervous. He’s nervous all the time.

For me it’s difficult
to imagine being like that,

very difficult… actually
I can’t imagine it at all.

There is a song we play
during concerts, it’s called Milk,

and I play it alone and he’s allowed
to leave the stage for 8 minutes.

And I think he can´t wait
for that moment,

because then he can go and find
some peace for a few minutes backstage.

So… I’m totally different…
I’m bright and loud.

It took him ages to understand

that we’re not against him.
Maybe he still doesn’t believe it.

He’s often on the defensive
because he thinks it’s two against one.

But he doesn’t understand that
he’s long been a part of us, you know.

And that he’s important to us,
that he belongs to us.

We don’t let idiots in… you know,
we do love the guy. Somehow.

Szary is a very quiet and well-balanced person.

We make jokes about him

having no adrenaline

and that he can't get nervous or excited.

When Gernot and I get into a fight,

Szary is often what we call "Switzerland"

because he's neutral and has a mediator role,

always quiet without getting excited.

Also I'm very thankful

that Szary and Gernot are not a front against me.

I never feel outvoted

just because they’ve been friends for longer

or because they have another band together.

In the end, that’s truly Szary’s merit

because Gernot and I always have
two strong opinions and we often…

we don’t agree.

And then… Szary is there.

Sometimes he doesn’t have an opinion

and it’s irritating and we have to tell him “come on dude,
you’re important here.”

But then he tells us his opinion and it’s…

neutral.

It’s also very nice to have him on tour,

where tensions are often high.

It’s good to have someone like him around.

He’s like a dog that calms you down.

It’s just his nature…

not one of those little nervous dogs.

He’s more like a big dog

that you want to cuddle with.

He’s so cute.

I probably should add here

that I get better along with dogs
than with human beings.

I often had sessions in the studio alone with Szary.

During those nightly shifts, I had the feeling

that I could do something there,
that I could experiment a lot with him

and he blossoms a little.

There is a potential in Sebastian Szary

that doesn’t come to light

because, in this group,
there are louder participants,

Gernot and me,

who speak over him.

Pacemaker, that’s right,

Gernot is a pacemaker…

my pacemaker.

It’s a kind of love;

he’s like a brother to me.

You might think

we’re very harmonious

but, quite a lot,

we rub each other up the wrong way.

He finds it difficult to hand things over

because he gets very skeptical.

He does that with me a lot.

Or maybe it’s both of us.

He tells me

“don’t fuck it up!”

but you know… I mean…

Often, he tells me

that I won’t get it right anyway.

But why shouldn’t I get it right?

If you tell me that I won’t get it right,

the chance is greater that I really won’t,

but I’d say let’s just try first.

For him it’s about control.

At the beginning,

when we used to meet to work on our first live sessions,

it was very important to him

to play the drums.

Because the drums are the guideline.

It’s really difficult because he
often comes across as a bully

who pushes other people.

But in essence, Gernot is very sensitive.

Probably too sensitive, yes.

And that’s why sometimes

you need to defuse or disarm him.

But really, when you get into a fight with Gernot,

he’s the one that can’t stand
the tension and tries to reconcile.

I could go on stage

and play the whole show angry with him

and never look at him.

But he could never stand that.

Why is it different when I talk
to Gernot than with others?

That’s probably because I’m scared to unsettle him,

I’m scared I could hurt him.

Gernot is quite vulnerable.
