And, you know...

Larry and me,
we were close friends.

We were best friends.

He was best man
at my wedding.

The people
that are in the room

are here for one reason,

because of Larry.

He's someone with integrity
with honor...

[applause]
- Um, with courage.

- I felt that Larry
genuinely liked me

and considered me
to be one of his best friends.

I would do anything for him.

He made me feel like
he was a brother of mine.

I'm just proud
that Larry's my friend.

I'm proud to be his friend.

And, uh, we look forward
to, uh, doing this again

in another ten years
for our 50ths.

PERSON 1: Yay!

BERNIE:
When I met Larry Ray,

he, uh, introduced himself
as a business guy.

And I was the first
deputy commissioner

in the New York City
Department of Correction.

We talked five times a day.

Uh, I met him at the gym
in the morning.

Want to go to dinner,
he'd come in the city;

I'd go to New Jersey.

We were together all the time.

- Larry had significant
business relationships.

BERNIE:
You could tell he had money.

He had a nice house.

He seemed like
a great father,

very attentive
to his daughter.

Didn't want for nothing.

Uh, you know, was constantly
traveling abroad.

- Larry would tell me
he's going to Russia next week.

He'll be back, you know,
in a few days.

He came off that he was
successful and very smart.

- What I really want
to say is thank you,

everybody, for being here.

It was a really nice surprise.

I had only half a clue.

[laughter]

BERNIE: I thought I knew
everything about him,

about his family,

and come to realize
in later years,

um, I knew nothing.

[dramatic music]

One day, Larry calls me,

and he tells me
that he's having a problem

and that the FBI
wants to indict him.

They want to prosecute him.

I mean, he was going crazy.

He was, you know,
"You got to help me."

- I was shocked.

He assured me that the charges
were baseless

and that he was innocent.

- He wanted me to call the head
of the FBI and talk to them.

And I said, "Dude, I'm not
calling no head of the FBI.

Whatever it is, it is.
You got to deal with it."

- The day
after he was indicted,

newspaper reports came out

about him being involved with
people from organized crime.

♪ ♪

It was devastating for him.

♪ ♪

BERNIE:
His whole life fell apart.

[sirens wailing]

- He began to blame
what was going on

on Bernie Kerik.

BERNIE: I just remember
people telling me

that Larry Ray
is publicly saying

I was hurting him in some way.

I have never hurt Larry,
conspired against him.

FRANK: I just couldn't
believe all the things

I was reading about it,

how there's a conspiracy
against him,

including
Vice President Cheney,

Bernie Kerik,

attorney general,
Mayor Giuliani.

He sounded crazy.

- Everything that went south
for him, he was a victim.

Never took responsibility
for anything

that wasn't going right.

♪ ♪

LEE: When I first
met Larry in prison,

he had been relating to me

various concerns he had
about his daughters.

He felt that they were
under constant danger

from Bernard Kerik.

LEE: And that was
how he managed to get me

very dedicated to helping him.

After Lawrence Ray
was released from prison,

I made him an offer

that he could stay
on my living room couch.

He went from living
on my living room couch

to taking over
my one-bedroom apartment.

There were students
in my living room

at all hours
of the day and night,

sitting there attentively
listening to Mr. Ray.

LEE: I began to spend
more and more of my time

away from the apartment.

The less I was there, the less
I had to deal with him.

But before I left,
I asked him,

"Why are you wasting
your precious time

with these students?"

In what I thought was
an exceedingly candid moment,

he said to me, "You and I
can only do so much.

But I'm building an army."

♪ ♪

[soft music]

♪ ♪

JULI:
During that year,

occasionally I'd see Dan
or Santos about.

I saw Claudia at the library
occasionally.

And I don't know
if I ever really saw Talia

or Isabella that year at all.

They were going
to classes and things,

but they didn't have a social
life on campus anymore.

They weren't going to parties.

They weren't really
pursuing friendships

outside of their group.

♪ ♪

RAVEN: Every time I did
see them walking around,

they would, like, cross
the street to be away from me.

Like, they wouldn't look
at me.

I didn't look at them
after a little while.

We just kind of pretend--

pretended the others
didn't exist.

They went from being
my closest friends

to people I couldn't even
make eye contact with

in passing anymore.

MAX: I miss being friends
with them, honestly.

They were some of my closest
friends for, you know,

a good two years there.

- They told me to come visit
a couple times.

And I was like, "I'm not
going anywhere near there."

I feared that danger
was imminent.

I just didn't trust him at all.

SANTOS:
According to Larry,

what was going on
in the apartment was special

and people outside the group
wouldn't understand it.

We're all getting better
together.

We're all, like,
forging ahead together.

It's me, Dan, Claudia,

Yalitza, Isabella, and Larry

all in that tiny apartment.

Talia and I broke up,
and she was living on campus.

- Yeah.

SANTOS: He would have us
record confessions.

Even though it's unusual,

he's been so helpful for us.

Like, I believed him
when he said

that I did the wrong thing,
so I was just like,

"All right, so what's
the right thing?

And I'll do it."

- [crying] I don't know.

YALITZA: I remember
people just standing

in the middle
of the living room

crying for hours.

You're fucked up,
and Larry's helping you.

And we can't leave because
then we'll be lost forever.

SANTOS: When he was
interrogating one of us,

he would say
that we never forget.

We just don't want to remember.

SANTOS:
He would say,

"Why are you
breaking my stuff?

Why are you treating me
this way?"

And it would be
an interrogation on why.

DAN: I don't know
how he arrived at,

"All of you
have been conspiring

against me all along."

But, like, I can kind of
see the logical leaps

where he's just like,
"There's no reason

"for you all to be here.

"There's no reason for you all

"to keep destroying my things.

"So, like, why are you all
destroying my things?

Why are you all sabotaging me?"

And it's not that far of a walk
to, like,

"Did Kerik put you up to this?"

We would stay up
in these interrogations

until, like, 3:00,
4:00 in the morning.

It's like,
your willpower is gone.

We slept when he said
to sleep.

And we ate only when he ate.

Getting me scared enough,

tired enough,
and hungry enough,

I would just
make something up.

The matter was never
allowed to be settled.

Like, I'm looking
for context clues

to try and figure out something
that there isn't an answer to.

This whole
convoluted conspiracy

started taking form.

I started to write memories.

[tense music]

[pencil scratching]

I ended up
constructing a narrative

that would not get me
yelled at

or would not get me hit.

By the end, the story
was that Kerik

and a bunch of corrupt cops

had been talking
to my parents

and paid them off to get me

and Claudia to sabotage Larry.

SANTOS:
The goalposts always move.

And more things were added on
as time went on.

DAN:
He was recording you

because this was like
his evidence.

And...

DAN:
It was all about adding

credibility to his stories.

You are now
making things right

by confessing on the record

ostensibly to send
these recordings

to the authorities.

DAN: If you gave him
what he wanted,

it might give you a little bit
more status in the group,

which equated to safety.

I remember Isabella
alongside Larry.

She was helping Larry
by documenting things.

She was, like,
close to an equal

or--so she was, like,
respected, you know.

And by always positioning
herself as supporting Larry,

she's, like, behind
the line of fire.

He had saved her,

and so she was,
like, devoted to him.

DAN:
There was a confusing

blurring of lines
between father-daughter

and boyfriend-girlfriend.

- She wanted to be his person.

And so when Felicia
came into the picture,

Isabella was upset.

FELICIA:
Hello.

It's my birthday today.

And look.

These are the flowers

that I got today
from Honey Bunny Man.

[laughs]

They say,
"All my love forever."

SANTOS: My sister Felicia
is the oldest.

She got into Harvard
from going

to JFK Public School
in the Bronx...

And managed to get
to Harvard--a full ride.

Then she got
into Columbia Medical School--

a full ride as well.

YALITZA: So she's
living in Los Angeles,

doing her residency
in psychiatry.

And she comes to visit.

The four of us
go have dinner together.

Felicia tells me later on

it was love at first sight
for her.

And for him too--it was, like,

a mutual
falling-in-love moment.

SANTOS: We all went back
to the apartment.

She ended up talking to him
late into the night.

She was studying
to be a psychiatrist,

and this was a guy
who could keep up with her

beat for beat on psychiatry.

YALITZA: When she
went back to LA,

they maintained
a long-distance relationship.

They're talking on the phone,
like, every day.

- One day, all of a sudden,
Larry is telling me,

"We gotta get your sister
out of LA."

[tense music]

[line rings]

- He puts her on speaker,

and she sounds
absolutely, like,

broken up and abs--
like, she sounded terrified.

- I was just confused as to,
like, what is happening.

Like, what's going on
over there?

FELICIA:
[sobbing]

SANTOS: It was something
about people were after her

and trying to hurt her.

It was unclear who they were.

But they wanted to hurt her
because she was dating Larry.

- It was just like,
all hands on deck.

Like, Felicia needs
to get out of LA.

And then
she's in New York City.

[sighs]

- Her whole life she's known
what she wanted,

and she had a goal,
and she went for it.

Like, what happened
in LA that got her

to come to New York City all--
in an emergency situation?

- She was like a shadow
of her normal self.

And now she's also saying
it was Kerik.

[somber music]

MARITZA:
[speaking Spanish]

- [speaking Spanish]

[horns honking]

- In general, everything was
getting more and more chaotic.

I was so exhausted
and emotionally drained.

There is a steady progression
in my thinking of, like,

doubts coming in,

being less and less sure
about what was going on.

DAN: I can't really make
sense of this conspiracy

and who are these people

and why are they interested
in Felicia.

I just didn't really get it.

Larry had a sense
maybe that I doubted.

He kept saying to everyone,

"Danny doesn't believe.

Like, Danny doesn't fucking--
you know--won't listen."

- And then he'd be like,
"You believe me now?

Like, are you embarrassed?
Like, you feel bad?"

You know?

And I was getting
more and more crushed

into a corner,

just a terrible situation
that I was trapped in

that wouldn't end.

It felt almost impossible
for me to leave

just because I was so dug in.

Like, I had, like,
vouched for this guy

so much with my parents

and created distance
between them

that at the time,
I was like,

"I don't know
if I can, like, fix that."

[wind chimes ringing]

CHARLES:
I wrote an email.

Says, "Dan, why can't you
return a call, text, or email?

"How long does it take?

"Something else
must be going on.

"Help me understand.

"This only seems to happen
when you are at Larry's.

"But I can't figure it out.

"Are you in a trance, drugs?

"Fathers worry. I worry.

"Someday you will understand.

"Know that I will always
love you no matter what.

"I just want you to be
the best you can be

"and a good man.

Love, Dad."

It's a good email.

- Good email.

- I think Larry was trying
to shut down communications.

I didn't want
to get it to a point

where I was making Dan
choose sides.

I kind of felt like if we made
a big issue about Larry,

it would just
shut Dan off more.

YALITZA:
When Dan was in the hot seat

that really, really
bad night,

it was, like, so beyond

just, like,
a "regular" interrogation.

[sighs]

DAN:
[speaking indistinctly]

LARRY:
[speaking indistinctly]

DAN: Uh-uh.
LARRY: Huh?

LARRY: Huh?
DAN: Uh-uh. Uh-uh.

DAN:
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

DAN:
[grunts]

LARRY:
[sighs, grunts]

LARRY:
[grunts]

DAN:
[grunts]

DAN:
Okay.

DAN:
As punishment,

he made this rope

out of aluminum foil
and plastic...

Had me, like,
wrap it around my genitals.

And then he was twisting that
to tighten that.

At this point, there's just,
like, nothing left of me.

We're all just, like,
doing this thing

that is never gonna end.

The moment I remember
was this night

that somehow
everyone was gone.

And in some ways,
I wonder if, like,

that's all it took,
'cause I was just constantly

surrounded by people always,

and somehow
there was this one night.

It just occurred to me
to go up on the roof.

Then there's the water tower.

There wasn't anything else
nearly as tall around,

so I climbed up...

Laid back on this roof.

I could literally just move,
like, half an inch,

and I would just
slide off of it.

[horns honking]

That would be the end.

Whatever this is,
whatever is going on,

it's, like, not--
[sighs]

It doesn't make sense
or feel good.

The whole thing was supposed
to be about the truth.

And I wasn't being honest
with myself.

Maybe he is a bad guy.

Like, I started
to let myself think that.

I sat there for a while,
looking at the city.

It was beautiful.

[siren wailing]

To me, it felt
like I had gotten out

of the mental prison,

and all I wanted was to leave.

Really soon after,
I took my stuff

and had no plans to come
back ever to that apartment.

♪ ♪

Once I went to campus,
it was just--I cut them off.

Signed up for an extra class.

I got a job,
and then I got a second job

so that I could legitimately
say I had no time, you know?

Just too busy to go back.

Larry calls,
and I don't answer the phone.

And then every time
after that,

I choose not to answer
and to not call him,

to not go back.

[dogs barking]

I assumed that everyone else,
at least Santos and Claudia,

would have left
the way that I did.

But it just got worse.

♪ ♪

YALITZA: When Dan
no longer was around,

Larry was like, "Dan gave up.

"He gave up on the path
to success and happiness

and being a good person."

And that was, like,
a dismissed, like, "Oh, yeah,

"we don't--we don't
talk about Dan anymore

because he--he gave up."

- Man, I remember
thinking like,

"Wow, he's--he's escaping."

Like, I vaguely thought
that I was like,

"Man, I wish
I could just leave,

"but I'm stuck now

because of all the stuff
that I did."

♪ ♪

In the apartment,
relationships kind of withered

where we didn't feel
comfortable talking

to each other
about stuff anymore.

By this point, what Larry
said was always the truth.

You know, it was my word
against his,

and who the fuck am I?

I just thought that I couldn't
trust what I felt anymore.

Like--
LARRY: Okay.

- I was placed
on medical leave from school.

[indistinct chatter]

I no longer had my friends
to talk to

or my school.

And all that was
left was Larry.

♪ ♪

[cheers and applause]

RAVEN: You make so many
good memories with people,

and you just kind of assume
that you're

gonna keep having them.

♪ ♪

The last time
I talked to Claudia

was on that booze cruise on
the last day after graduation.

I had a little bit
too much to drink

and was starting
to get really riled up

and angry
about those friendships.

And I could see them.

They were right there
across the boat.

I went over there, and I was
like, "Are you guys okay?

"Like, you know
you're in a cult, right?

Like, you know
is this so bad, right?"

I think I hit a breaking point.

Talia was laughing it off.

And Isabella was just,
like, kind of uncomfortable.

Claudia was like, "Okay,
Raven, like, get out of here."

I wasn't, like, mad.

I wasn't, like,
yelling at them.

But I was, like, loudly,
strongly pleading.

What if I never see them again
and something bad happens?

♪ ♪

YALITZA:
That summer, a bunch of us

ended up in Pinehurst,
North Carolina, with Larry.

His stepdad owned
a property down there.

Larry wanted to fix up
the property

as a gift to his father.

[tense music]

There's, like, patchy grass.

♪ ♪

The backyard is, like,
uneven mounds

and scrambled bits of trees.

YALITZA: It was, like,
torrential rain that summer.

I didn't know
what I was doing.

I was just following his lead.

YALITZA: Digging, shoveling,
moving trees.

He put a lock on the fridge.

We weren't allowed to eat
without his permission.

It was, like, bonkers.

It was just, like,
impossible situation.

- The guy wouldn't sleep.

He was, like, on 100, 120
milligrams of Adderall

every day.

Like, he would pop
all at once

in the morning.

[chain saw buzzing]

- I mean, it was worse
when he wasn't on Adderall,

'cause then he was, like,
a million miles a minute,

running roughshod
over everyone and everything.

PERSON:
Okay.

YALITZA:
Just like purgatory.

There's no end in sight.

It's like torture.

And on top of that,
my relationship with Felicia

was, like, breaking down, like,
to a severe degree

because Felicia
was breaking down

emotionally and mentally.

YALITZA: She's my older sister
who has been

so capable my entire life.

I was tasked with
babysitting her, essentially.

PERSON:
Larry.

- But the same time, I was the
one triggering her breakdowns.

I was blamed
for her deterioration.

And then Larry's
having health issues,

or at least
it seems like he is.

And there's, like,
no real explanation

for why his wound
on his leg isn't healing.

So then it's like,
who would do that?

Isabella is the one
tending to his wound.

Felicia is a doctor.
She's not gonna harm him.

So who would do that except me?

Except I don't
remember doing it.

Larry's looking at me,

waiting for me
to say something.

Isabella's looking at me like,
"Bitch, say something."

I'm thinking that maybe
I just forgot doing it

and therefore
I'm a terrible person.

And then it comes up
that I supposedly

poisoned Felicia in Los Angeles
two years prior

and that explained--like,
that was, like, an explanation

for her mental state.

As soon as I started
confessing

that I poisoned her,

I remember her basically
looking at me like,

"How can you do this to me?"

This is hell for me.

This is like--
this is like--

When is this gonna be over?
There's, like, no--

I confessed
to poisoning my sister.

Like, I confessed to,
like, hurting people.

Like, what--what--what's--

like, what's after this,
you know?

[sniffles]

How am I supposed to repay
someone's, like, life?

Like, that--that amount
is, like--

there's no amount to that.

I can't make a list
of, like, a--[sighs]

You know?

[somber music]

It was just torture
to be there.

One night, I sneak out
to the front

where our work shoes are.

I slip mine on

and then walk out
off the property...

Through the neighborhood,
and out into the highway.

♪ ♪

I find a trail
next to the highway

that's hidden by the trees,

just make my way down
until that ran out.

♪ ♪

And I run
across the highway...

♪ ♪

To, like, hide from
the potential search party.

♪ ♪

Night sky was clear.

You know, I could see,
like, all the stars.

It was kind of peaceful,
you know?

'Cause I was away
from that house.

♪ ♪

I took the 9:00 p.m. train
to New York City.

♪ ♪

After I get back to New York,

I had to live
in supportive housing

and, like, figure out
a way to move forward

without my siblings
and without my family.

I didn't feel comfortable
reaching out to them again.

So I had to kind of, like...

try to figure out
how to live a new life.

[sniffles]

♪ ♪

SANTOS:
For several years,

there was no sense of time.

All the days bled
into each other.

- Yeah.

- Felicia was not
a functional human.

He was using us
against each other to, like,

erode any sense of trust.

- Oh, my God!

- Stop making noise, Felicia.
Stop making noise.

- Yes!

- [coughs]

♪ ♪

There was moments
where things got too much...

I would be like,
"I have to leave.

"But I shouldn't leave.

"I have to leave.
But I shouldn't leave.

I'll hate myself if I leave."

But then this one day,

I literally walked out
with the clothes on my back.

♪ ♪

I was a few blocks away,
and Felicia called me,

and I was like, "I'm leaving."

And she was, like,
crying, saying,

"Larry is gonna be so mad
at me for letting you leave."

And I was just like,
"I just can't do it."

♪ ♪

RAVEN: We all missed out
on getting to have

the joy
of progressing together,

growing up seeing each other.

I was excited to watch
their lives unfold

and to see
who we grew up to be.

It should have been
heartbreaks and breakups

and a bad first job
and a kind of good second job.

♪ ♪

MAX: For years,
we would tell the story,

"Oh, our friends
joined a cult."

I think we still thought
at that time,

like, "Oh, they're all living
together, and it's weird."

It was a lot darker
than we ever knew.

♪ ♪

RAVEN: News of the
ClaudiaDrury.com website

started to circulate among
the Sarah Lawrence community.

MAX: I was worried for a while
that Santos was dead.

Very worried about him.

RAVEN: I started getting texts
from all kinds of people.

She had written down
that she had poisoned me

and a bunch of other
of our friends and peers

at Sarah Lawrence.

A lot of other Sarah Lawrence
alumni from the same year

were worried
they were poisoned.

PERSON: For a second,
I was like, "Is it possible

that she was poisoning us?"

And then I was like,
"Wait, there's no way

"that she was poisoning
the entire house,

or we'd all be dead
or very sick."

MAX: And then when I watched
that video,

that was incredibly disturbing.

MAX: My first reaction
to this was just

complete confusion, shock.

I didn't know
whether to believe it.

- It was not at all
like the Claudia I knew.

- That's not her personality.
It's not her body language.

- To just see her, like,
in that...

I don't know,
subservient state

is just infuriating.

JULI: Between Larry's
aggressive prompting

and literally
ordering her around...

- I don't know how anyone
can see that video

and not think there's something
very wrong going on here.

- That's when I wanted
to find out, where was she?

That became our big thing.

Where is she physically?

I'm just looking for clues.

I found a phone number
listed on there.

I'm not gonna call it.

But maybe if I google it,
an address will come up.

What I got
was a Twitter account.

And on that Twitter, there was
a link to an escort page

with prices and photos of her.

It was clearly Claudia,
but she had lost

a scary amount of weight.

I wanted to see her get
out of that situation

as soon as possible,

and I wanted to do whatever
I could to help that happen.

Maybe we call the number
and Max goes to the hotel room

to try to meet her
and then takes her.

Uh, we talked about a lot
of different scenarios.

- Ultimately what I decided
on was to, you know,

go to the authorities.

So I got connected
to a detective

specializing
in sex trafficking

at the Department
of Homeland Security,

told the whole story
of how Larry came to visit,

everything up till this video
that we think

he's coercing Claudia,

maybe the others
into prostitution.

They didn't know
what to make of the case,

but they basically
laughed it out of the room.

- It's too crazy.

I think that's what Larry
had best going for him.

It was so crazy
that no one would believe it.

When we--anyone who talks
about it, you seem insane.

You seem like you're
a conspiracy theorist.

We decided that since the law
wasn't gonna do anything

about it,
the next best thing to do

was tell another alumni, Ezra.

EZRA: By that time,
I was a freelance reporter.

This seemed potentially
like it could be a story.

There was so much to dig into.

I had been talking
to New York Magazine about it.

That's when they added James
on the project.

JAMES: The second
you log on to the website,

you immediately get a sense
that something is amiss.

JAMES:
Who is this man

on the other side
of that camera?

EZRA: We discovered that
Larry's original last name

was not Ray.

It was Grecco.

JAMES: He changed his name
to take on this new identity.

One of the core details
from his autobiography

is that he was in the marines.

We of course
called up the marines.

They said, "Nope,
we have no record of him

ever working for the marines."

EZRA: He really did know
a lot of important people.

But at the same time,
he had a capacity

to expand on the things
he really did

into the realm of fantasy.

JAMES: During our reporting,
we got ahold

of this psychological
evaluation of Larry

that he underwent
during his custody battle.

"It is literally impossible
to evaluate Mr. Ray

"in the usual clinical manner.

"He's able to manipulate
and control

"almost any situation
in which he finds himself.

He is calculating,
manipulative, and hostile."

Everybody in his life
is like a player in this game.

He needs an audience.

It's one of the reasons
he talked to me.

EZRA: He was willing
to talk about Claudia

through the prism
of the conspiracy against him

and the poisoning.

EZRA: I was completely
shocked when he

spelled that out so clearly.

Claudia was an escort.

JAMES: We had no idea how much
money she was giving him.

Any number that we
would have come up with

would not have been
anywhere near as much

as she was actually giving.

My jaw hit the floor
when we saw

that she was giving him
millions of dollars.

EZRA: In his mind,
she owed him money

as a result of poisoning.

JAMES: There was no conclusive
evidence of poisoning.

The whole thing was a delusion
to control these kids.

Larry's endgame was to keep
the conspiracy alive.

What is most consequential
was that he

was able to steal,
collectively,

decades of lives from these
promising young kids.

REPORTER:
What happened to the group

of bright college students
who fell under the sway

of a classmate's father?

The piece is a cover story
for New York Magazine.

It is staggering.

SANTOS: When the news articles
started coming out

about what he had done

and what he had done
to the others in the group,

I remember hanging on
to the facade

of who Larry was by, like--

by a hair.

[siren wailing]

When the government
wanted to talk to me,

initially,
I was defending Larry.

And I go to their office,

was published,

Claudia called me.

And for the first time
in years,

after so long
of being alone with this,

suddenly I was on the phone
with someone else

who could validate
my experience.

PERSON:
How did that feel?

- It made me feel
sane again, human again.

You know, this happened.
It did happen.

RAVEN: It was still
pretty raw when we talked.

She really thought
she poisoned people.

And she couldn't find reality.

She couldn't get back to it.

She said when she saw

on the assumption

just to get Larry kicked out

of the dorms in the first week.

But I realize now I-I couldn't
compete with Larry.

He was a better
mind changer than me.
