Grooming is a behavior we see from a majority of ACMs.

It's the act of conditioning a minor for sexual abuse

through psychological manipulation.

But Connecticut doesn't have a grooming statute,

which makes pursuing many of "Flori's" cases difficult.

We do have a phone number, and we have a user name

My guess is that he uses the same username on multiple sites.

[Roo] My concern, when I hear that eager "I'll pick you up right now" is that

we are dipping our toes into human trafficking and sex abuse.

We talk about grooming when it comes to an ACM and a minor.

But there's also grooming when it comes to a trafficker and the victim.

And what that looks like

is often just being really friendly in the beginning.

A girl says to her friend, "I'm dating this guy. He's super nice.

He wants to take us both to get our nails done."

After the grooming period, frankly, the pimp takes ownership.

A lot of minors are trapped in this human trafficking machine

because you can't get out.

is see who can dig into identity.

In order to confirm that he's using a real phone number,

and not necessarily, like, a burner,

we're going to do a fake scam call about his car's extended warranty.

looking for a new friend to chat with."

He is from Oklahoma, though.

We found out through an Instagram conversation. He escalated...

But later that night, we pivot back to our underage decoy, Flori,

and her pursuer, Marco.

He said he could... maybe he could get a room.

He wants to meet at a hotel that's known for drug activity and activity with sex workers.

This all sniffs of something pretty devious.

Is he a kidnapper? Does he do human trafficking?

My personal preference

is to never have you go anywhere--

But what if Marco is lying? What if he's already here,

watching us?

He actually tried to meet.

He had knives,

zip ties, all kinds of things in the car.

And in Oklahoma, just talking to what he thinks is a minor, sexually,

he's already broken the law again in Oklahoma.

Because of this information and stuff that he's presenting that he's still doing it.

He's on bond, he promised he wouldn't do it.

It just makes our argument for sentencing to lock him up for a long time.

And the only thing that we can guess

is that this person sold their car to Marco,

and Marco has not yet registered it with the state of New York.

Usually when we get a plate, that's the end of it, we're able to ID someone.

Unfortunately, that's not the case here.

[Avalon] So for his Google review, he had left his first and last name.

We just decided to search that and see if it happened to be him,

or if there was another Marco

who happened to own that same exact vehicle.

And it turns out that it was in fact his review.

[Roo] Okay, we found him, this is our guy.

Now we can package it up, and give it to law enforcement in New York.

[Roo] We experienced the pain that a minor victim may go through.

We identify a perpetrator, we get all the information we can,

we package it up and send it over to law enforcement.

And aside from maybe testifying, that's where our job ends.

Unfortunately, I cannot force the hand of a prosecutor

or law enforcement or a judge.

It's not really our place to make those decisions.

We are not law enforcement, we are not judge and jury.

But I know it's a long game, and sometimes we win

because we stick in it long enough to win.

[reporter] Today, in Canadian County,

a former sheriff's deputy is sentenced

after being caught in a sex sting in 2019.

And while awaiting sentencing for that charge, the man was caught again

trying to meet with a teenage girl

who turned out to be an undercover informant.

As a result of that second offense,

the judge in the case increased the man's sentence

from one to two years to ten.

When our suspect reached out to their undercover profile,

it established a pattern of behavior.

This[bleep] could've wound up with something as low as probation

or minimal jail time.

What she's doing out there is making a difference

and helping law enforcement every day,

and to making sure predators are being locked up.
