Kailash: When I went to school for the first time,

I saw a boy of my age

sitting outside the school gate

working on the roadside.

I will never forget the boy's eyes.

I asked my teacher, friends, and my family,

"Why this boy is not going to school?"

Everyone tried to convince me

that these people are poor people

and their children have to work.

It was a shock for me,

why some people are born to work

at the cost of their childhood?

These files belong to different rescue operations.

The numbers are the numbers of the children rescued.

25 children, 25 children, three children, two children.

So, this is one of the biggest raids,

where we were able to rescue 63 children.

I have one single mission.

Every child should be free to be a child.

Narrator: For these children, it's the end of one reality

and the beginning of another.

Kailash: When I started my fight against child slavery,

nobody was talking about it, nobody was knowing about it.

There was no person, no organization, nothing.

Narrator: He started work as an engineer

to honor the wishes of his father,

but in his heart, Kailash was always an activist.

That's how he met his wife.

Sumedha was a newspaper editor moved by Kailash's articles

about the oppression of women and children.

Out of their one-room apartment in Delhi,

he launched a magazine to create awareness about the issue.

One night, a man came to his door.

He had escaped a brick-making factory

where he and his daughter were enslaved.

She was about to be sold to a brothel,

and he was asking for help.

Kailash: She was stripped,

and they were touching different parts of her body

to negotiate the final price.

I started thinking,

"If she was my daughter,

I would turn the whole world upside down to rescue her."

I told him, "I'll go with you to rescue your daughter."

They said, "These people are criminal.

They can kill us."

Kailash: I had to come back to Delhi with empty hands.

A failure.

Narrator: Kailash stayed up all night.

He decided to use photos from the raid as evidence...

and took them to a judge,

who ordered the slaves released.

Kailash: I was so overwhelmed with joy and emotions.

( camera shutter clicks )

We were so energized,

we decided to go and liberate more people.

Narrator: The next week, Kailash rescued 163 more slaves,

and kept going.

He and Sumedha founded Bachpan Bachao Andolan,

BBA for short.

It means "save the childhood movement."

Kailash: 30 years ago, many people thought

that slavery has been abolished.

They were wrong.

( music playing )

My colleagues and I have freed over 80,000 children.

Each time a child is freed

and the smile of freedom appears on her face,

is it not enough to be inspired?

Narrator: Nearly four decades after they started BBA,

Kailash has more than 200 activists, social workers,

and lawyers working alongside him

to fight child slavery at every level.

Narrator: When Kailash first started rescuing children,

he and his wife Sumedha would bring them to their home,

but they realized that rescuing them was not enough,

so they set up Mukti Ashram to help with their recovery.

Right from childhood,

I was a part of everything that was going on.

You know, you were pretty much born into it.

The kids rescued were my brothers,

so every festival was spent with them.

I could understand these little kids need to be with their parents.

I could understand that these kids are not in school like me.

That activism was sort of right there from the get-go.

We were taught to question everything.

Bhuwan: This was life. This was how I was growing up,

with the ideals of revolution and change,

and equality, freedom.

Freedom from exploitation, justice.

Kailash: I consciously engaged them in my work,

right from their childhood

so they can understand, they can feel,

they can experience what I do.

I could never go to their schools

and their parent meetings and so on.

I told them there are many more children in the world

which need me more than you.

Kailash: It's difficult for them to have trust in anyone.

So we started some small things,

to build their self-confidence,

restore some sense of dignity.

( women speaking Hindi )

- Sanjeet? - No.

Kailash: These children have no freedom.

They're forced to work like animals,

12, 13, 14, 15, 16 hours a day.

Narrator: Sometimes when he was out on a rescue mission,

his family wouldn't hear from him for days.

And often those raids turned violent.

Kailash's leg and backbone were broken

and his skull was fractured.

Asmita: That was scary.

But I don't remember my mother freaking out or getting scared.

She was the pillar of strength,

always there, and she was so normal through it all.

( Sumedha speaking Hindi )

Bhuwan: For us, sacrifice is what builds

the foundation of change.

( speaking Hindi )

Kailash: I am just one single human being.

My wife, my son, or my daughter,

if we are killed,

that would not be a big loss for this planet.

But if millions of children are trapped into slavery,

that is a bigger crime.

( car horns honking )

Narrator: To find Sonu, the team must go undercover

into Ali Rasool's factory.

Swati: This boy has been missing for last seven months.

Sonu has been trafficked to Delhi

- for one of the-- - Kailash: Who took him?

Well, this trafficker whose name is Ali Rasool.

- So-- taken-- - And the child has been taken to Delhi.

- Swati: Taken to Delhi. - Kailash: Do you have any clue

- where is he working now? - Turkman Gate.

( speaking Hindi )

- Kailash: This is a dangerous area. - Yeah, this is dangerous area.

That's what the thing is too.

Kailash: We have been attacked there two times.

At least two times.

Narrator: BBA has been attacked because factories were sealed

and local owners arrested.

Bhuwan: Each time a child is rescued,

a person gets prosecuted.

And each time a person gets prosecuted,

we make a bunch of new enemies.

Kailash: Within two or three minutes,

the mob could come, be a possibility of attack.

Narrator: As BBA became more effective,

the forces against them grew stronger.

The office was ransacked and burned,

police and politicians were bribed,

and mobs were formed to attack activists

and take children back to the factory.

Kailash: I was fighting against a social evil,

but I was fighting against mafia, criminals,

most dangerous people.

- ( men clamoring ) - ( man speaking Hindi )

Kailash: My colleagues have faith in my mission,

but they also have faith in my leadership.

All of them have heard the stories of Dhoom Das,

but they still trust me.

Narrator: His colleague Dhoom Das was trying to organize a march.

Kailash: When I arrived, it was chaos.

Blood on the street.

Everyone was crying.

And then I found him.

I had to carry his body on my shoulder.

Dhoom Das was beaten to death.

Didn't have the courage to answer to his wife.

I still feel that...

I carry the burden of the body of Dhoom Das on my--

Kailash: Arshad is like my younger brother.

I could see some sort of determination

and self-confidence,

the leader in rescue operations,

because this requires a lot of intelligence.

It requires a lot of courage.

Narrator: Arshad poses as a buyer

so he can get into the factory in hopes of locating Sonu.

Narrator: Before they plan a raid to rescue the children,

they want to confirm if Sonu is there.

Kailash: Make sure that the father is contacted.

And without wasting time,

- Sonu's father should come to Delhi. - Yeah. Delhi.

Kailash: When the slave children themselves

become the spokespersons,

the change would be much more sustainable.

Narrator: If they can identify Sonu in the footage,

they'll have the evidence they need to arrest Ali Rasool

and seal the factory.

to anyone other than their parents.

Kailash: Reuniting these children with their mothers,

who lost all their hopes,

that is an experience which cannot be told in words.

On the other hand,

these parents are very, very vulnerable.

Kailash: Parents of these children are illiterate.

Most of them are very poor.

Children don't see any better alternative

than going and helping their families

by way of earning something.

And that's why when we address the problem of child slavery,

we have to address from many corners.

There is a vicious circle between child labor,

adult unemployment, poverty, and illiteracy.

Kailash: My faith is that,

poorest of the poor people,

they start believing in education.

Phool Singh and Ali Rasool are typical examples of traffickers.

Narrator: Traffickers promise money and a better life.

Parents are led to believe that they are doing something good

for their child and family.

Kailash: They are offered some money as an advance.

An ignorant, illiterate and poor father

can easily be convinced to send his children to work.

Narrator: Human trafficking is the largest organized crime

in the world,

with annual profits estimated at $100 billion.

Narrator: Kailash realized that he couldn't end child labor

by rescuing kids one at a time.

Kailash: I was freeing children from the carpet industry,

and a larger number of children were entering into it.

The solution of every problem

lies in the problem itself,

so why can't we approach the consumers?

Narrator: He launched Rugmark, a non-profit

that labeled carpets made without child labor.

( chanting in Hindi )

The number of children working in the carpet industry decreased

from over a million to just under 200,000.

But there were still 260 million children working

in almost every country around the world.

So Kailash looked to his heroes.

Kailash: They were spreading their message by marching

and going people to people.

Narrator: Kailash organized a worldwide march

to put pressure on governments.

( chanting in Hindi )

Narrator: Over 15 million people marched across 103 countries

History is witnessing an unprecedented moment today.

( applause )

Narrator: 180 countries ratified an international treaty

against child labor.

( speaking Hindi )

Narrator: He continued working country to country

to write and enforce laws that protect children.

Now India has ratified a total ban on child labor,

and worldwide, the number of children working has dropped

from 260 to 152 million.

Thorbjorn Jagland: The Nobel peace prize for 2014

is to be awarded to Kailash Satyarthi

for the struggle against suppression

of young people and children.

Kailash: If one child is enslaved,

then for me, the world is not free,

and that is an evil which I want to to end in my lifetime

and I will do.

I will do.

Swati: You just can't imagine the pain the parents have undergone

while searching for their children.

And we have been given this responsibility by them.

They have chosen and they have actually trusted upon us.

We cannot just wait and watch.

Now we have to act in different manner.

So we have to take a new course of action

in finding the missing child.

Narrator: Without any leads, Kailash redirects the investigation

to go after Ali Rasool.

Kailash: Make him friend.

If he has slightest doubt in you,

then he will disappear.

Woman: I'm so pumped that I'm here.

an authentic brand label.

Most major brands label their products in other countries

to avoid detection during raids.

Woman on video: Oh hey, guys, I went to Homesense tonight,

and I found some stuff.

Announcer: Saving is believing.

That's a low price!

Narrator: Everybody likes to save money.

But as our thirst for cheaper and cheaper goods has grown,

western companies look for more affordable manufacturing

- so they can stay competitive. - Woman: $7.50 per skirt.

Narrator: Much of that saving comes from outsourcing labor.

How are these one pound?

In the U.S., minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.

These jeans are $11, so on the more expensive side.

In France, it's $11.22 an hour,

China, 87 cents an hour.

Child labor is free.

( speaking Hindi )

Kailash: Who brought these documents?

Oh!

Namaste.

Narrator: BBA coordinates with police to conduct rescue operations.

But sometimes they are bribed

by traffickers and factory owners.

Kailash: There was hundreds of times

when I went to rescue some children

and the police is a good friend of the trafficker

and the slave master.

They pass on the information,

and the children are removed.

Narrator: In 2004, Kailash went to rescue a dozen girls

who were being held as sex slaves in a traveling circus.

( shouting in Hindi )

Kailash: The circus owner was a hardcore criminal.

( shouting in Hindi )

( gun clicks )

( boys screaming )

Broken hand? You really don't know?

- Broken leg. - We need to go immediately.

( speaking Hindi )

Kailash: The raid failed,

and all these girls were taken away.

We have to look for the rest of the people.

Where are the mothers of the children?

( chanting in Hindi )

Narrator: Kailash went on hunger strike

in an attempt to free the girls.

( chanting in Hindi )

Kailash: On the second day,

they started threatening my daughter.

Narrator: The traffickers gave him an ultimatum:

Give up the hunger strike

or your daughter will meet the same fate as those girls.

Kailash: She would be branded with iron rods,

gang raped.

We were worried.

But these girls who were trafficked to work in slavery

have only hope in me.

Narrator: On the sixth day, Kailash's kidneys started to fail.

Kailash: I was willing to die.

When the people saw on television,

it inspired ordinary people

in different parts of the country

to demand the government stop the shows of children in circuses.

The high court took action.

And all the girls were freed.

Narrator: But the threats to Kailash's daughter continued to escalate.

For her own protection,

Kailash sent her to stay with friends in the U.S.

Kailash: I used to go in my daughter's room.

She was not there.

Sometimes I feel I did good...

...but I'm not sure.

Narrator: In a few days, parents will arrive

and they will have a choice to make.

Many will want to send their kids to school,

but they are still financially desperate.

In order to arrest Ali Rasool and find Sonu,

BBA must coordinate with police

and catch him in the factory while kids are working.

With Ali Rasool leaving in two days,

BBA must move quickly to plan a raid.

( laughs )

Kailash: If the local police is connived with them

and the local police informs,

then where they can remove the children?

Kailash: Without wasting time, swiftly, find the children there.

Kailash: It's a child,

and child's father is sitting with us.

He has only hope in us.

Kailash: Today we have freed 45 children.

That is not enough.

He's not a number,

he is a boy who is breathing,

he's having heart and he has parents.

So it's frustrating.

Narrator: BBA has persuaded the government

to pay all rescued children $5,000 plus back wages,

but it can take months for these payments to clear.

Kailash: I am up against so many odds.

( car horns honking )

Against so many odds.

Either he is held in slavery somewhere

or he's been killed.

I have always met desperate mothers, fathers.

I have seen corruption.

I have seen injured children with broken spirits,

but I have also seen that change is possible.

I have seen children who lost their hopes

but now they are freeing other children.

Desperate mothers sending their children to schools.

I'm not going to stop fighting for changing the laws,

but we cannot end child labor unless we all demand it.

I am angry about it.

Be angry against slavery, and think and think

and then act.

Narrator: Kailash is launching a campaign

called 100 million for 100 million,

connecting young people who are looking for a way to help

with the victims of child labor.

So 100 million young people in the schools, colleges,

universities can be the voices

for the cause of those 100 million left out.

What if all of us said, "No, we are not going to buy

and use your goods if they are produced by child slaves."

So do you want to be a changemaker

for those children in the world?

All: Yes.

Then raise your hands.

One out of 10 are working in child labor.

But that means nine are not.

If the world has moved to bring nine children

to freedom and education,

why can't one who is left out?

Kailash: If we are able to protect this generation,

the next generation will protect

all the generations to come in the future.

( all clamoring )

Kailash: Childhood is not an age.

Every child is born to be free,

free to laugh and cry,

free to play,

free to learn, free to go to school,

free to grow,

free to touch the sky.

Kailash: If you see any kind of atrocity and abuse

and exploitation of any child, anywhere,

break the silence.

Stand up.
