I happened to pass by.

I saw the light was on.

So I made a bowl of sweet soup

to warm your body.

I have a sweet tooth,

but I don't like soup.

You've been making me this

ever since you came here.

Why don't you try something else?

If you don't like it,

I'll just throw it away.

(Wedding Ritual)

I saw it.

Well,

the surprise at the wedding is gone.

So you're

preparing for the wedding.

You toy with me again.

But,

it was my parents who supervised

the wedding back then.

You know?

I've calculated the cost.

I didn't expect it'd cost

so many taels to hold a wedding.

You and I already got a kid.

It's alright not to hold a wedding.

♪The mountain and water carry me through my lifetime relationship♪

I'm warning you.

Before we get married,

do not seduce me again.

This is an edict from the Empress Dowager for Pei Yanzhen.

(Shen's Residence)

Mother,

I'm scared.

It's alright. I got you.

A boy should be trained to face danger

when he's little.

Otherwise,

you might not get a girlfriend in the future.

But

Great-uncle said

a gentleman should stay away from danger.

It's only been a few days.

You already knew such virtues.

What did I tell you?

A boy should be more mischievous.

Don't forget about what I taught you.

Look.

Look how they play with spears.

Aren't they imposing?

But,

Great-uncle is knowledgeable.

He's more imposing.

He's certainly good.

But Xiao, isn't it better if you excel in both knowledge

and martial arts?

Mother,

Great-uncle will teach me

Pythagorean Theorem later.

When do I get to come down?

Do not come down.

Well,

it's more than enough to have a weak scholar.

If you...

Big trouble, Miss.

Stop.

I'm educating my kid now.

There's a eunuch in the foyer.

He's announcing an edict to Master.

Slow down, Miss.

Xiao,

how did you go up there?

Come. Squat down first.

I'll catch you.

One, two, three.

Pei Yanzhen.

Pei Yanzhen.

Where is Pei Yanzhen?

Did the eunuch take him away?

I'm here, Miao.

Mind your step.

Where have you been?

What did the eunuch come for?

Go get me some tincture.

Miao.

Pei Yanzhen, just tell me

why the eunuch came to see you.

Calm down, Miao.

I just saw him off

to the front door.

Her Highness heard

that I'm a good cook, so she on a whim

summoned me to the palace

to try my cooking.

It's no big deal.

You're going to the palace?

When?

Put it here.

Yes.

Did the Shen family implicate you again

due to its high reputation?

How can you be sure that it isn't me who implicated you?

You're a decent man.

It must be us who implicated you.

Miao,

I'm just a commoner now.

The Shen family has lost its position as the leading merchant.

Her Highness and His Majesty won't push us over the edge.

Believe me.

I'll depart for the capital tomorrow.

I'll be back soon.

Are you for real?

You're here.

Why would I stay in the capital?

Believe me. I'll be back soon.

You must bring

this scrimshaw deer with you.

I'm alive and well now.

But when I was a kid,

I nearly died.

Those physicians who felt my pulse

sighed and shook their heads.

They told my dad to prepare for my funeral.

But my mom refused to believe it.

She looked after me all day and night.

And she put this scrimshaw deer

on me

to keep me alive,

and to ward off evil.

Who knew

that I actually healed myself a few days later.

Is that true?

That's why

you must put it on.

Whatever danger threatens you,

it can get you back safely

and help you get through it.

It is the capital.

How could it become a danger?

It's like a living hell to be

with Her Highness and General Qin.

Pei Yanzhen,

listen carefully.

I don't ask for a luxurious life.

I just want you to stay by my side.

You have to know

that whenever it is,

one's life is the most important thing.

I promise you

I'll return safely.

Come, give it to me.

Hold it tight.

Slow down.

Miao,

this is a business trip.

It's not that I'm moving.

That'd be great if you were moving.

You can bring me along with you.

The cushion can relieve back pain due to the long journey.

Also,

the road is bumpy.

Don't spend all the time reading. It's bad for the eyes.

As for the food,

it's for your supper

as you always stay up late.

I pick them myself.

It's all your favorite stuff you always use.

Don't be ungrateful.

You're such a virtuous and beautiful wife.

I'm grateful

to have you as my wife.

It doesn't sound like a compliment.

Come, give it to me.

It's a compliment.

It's just because I'm ineloquent.

After arriving in the capital,

you must get more rest.

Don't push yourself too hard.

Her Highness and His Majesty are used to eating delicacies.

Just make something common will do.

Also,

you promised you'll be back soon.

You must practice what you preach, got it?

With this hairpin as the proof, I'll be back soon.

When did you buy it? Put it on for me.

I saw it a few days ago.

I thought it's pretty that it'd fit you.

So I bought it.

How is it? Do I look good?

It fits you perfectly,

like the peach blossom.

You look gorgeous.

With this hairpin as the proof,

you must return safely.

Congratulations, Father. The prey falls for it.

All we need is your command.

What's the situation in Lingzhou?

Pei Yanzhen is busy flirting with Shen Miao.

He's wasted.

He just bade farewell to Shen Miao.

He'll arrive in the capital soon.

Pei Yanzhen left Lingzhou.

Shen Qian went to the Western Regions.

This is the best chance for us to deal with the Shen family.

Father, you're saying...

After the Emperor and Pei Yanzhen die,

I'll have a strong army and great fortune.

It'll be easy for me to obtain the empire.

You have to let Shen Miao live.

So we can account for Song Xiyuan.

You can do whatever you want with the rest.

But Song Xiyuan has a glib tongue.

It's really hateful.

I know that you don't like him.

But we still need his help now.

When everything is settled,

he'll be at your disposal.

Yes, Father.

But everything went too well.

I don't feel right about it.

You should make a run to Lingzhou.

And I

have to enter the palace.

(With this hairpin as the proof, I'll be back soon.)

Miaomiao doesn't want me anymore.

Miaomiao.

Miss.

Miss, does your foot hurt again?

I'm fine. It's all because of it.

It has the same personality with Third Master Song.

This aggrieved look of it is

indeed a lot like Third Master Song.

Xiao Fu,

with the fuss that Vice General Qin has made,

where is she going?

Third Master,

I'm just a janitor.

How would I dare to spy on them?

But I heard them talking about something

like Lingzhou or the Shen family.

Come in, Mother.

A little boy like you

shouldn't waste your time on this.

It's a sunny day and the breeze is warm.

Let's go fly kites.

Mother, your foot is injured.

Don't run around and cause trouble to me.

Mother, Great-uncle is proficient in Chinese Classics,

and he worked as an official.

From now on, you have to clean up your act

and study hard.

So you can have a harmonious life with Great-uncle.

Do not be afraid

of going against

the old leading officials.

What does this mean?

Mother, Great-uncle said

this proverb means not to be afraid

of defying the wishes of the old leading officials.

It's adapted from...

It's not enough just to clean up your act.

You must study hard like Sun Jing and Su Qin in ancient times.

Well,

even Pei Yanzhen didn't study hard like them.

What a traitorous son.

What did he say before he left?

What did he tell you?

He said you got to be filial and take care of me.

I don't care.

I want to go out for fun today.

You have to accompany me.

You...

Brat!

Is this how you treat your mother?

(Dream River Residence)

Pei Yanzhen,

is this how you raise Xiao?

When you come back,

I'll settle this with you.

Miss.

Your foot hasn't recovered yet.

Don't wander around.

Never mind.

What do you need to see me about?

There are two servants from Pei family.

They said the elders of the Pei family haven't seen Master Xiao for so long.

They want to pick him up for a short stay.

What do you think, Miss?

Hold your hand out.

Here, have some fish.

Come, be nice.

Here.

Come, here.

Eat some.

Mother, I want my mother.

This brat.

You'll only appreciate

your mother when you lose her.

What did you say, Miss?

Do you allow him to go or not?

Yes.

Why not?

The elders of the Pei family

are kind of like Xiao's grandparents.

Pei Yanzhen went to the capital.

With Xiao around,

I'm sure both of them will be excited.

Just go pack his stuff.

Noted.

By the way,

my leg is not yet healed

after so many days.

It'd be troublesome

if I couldn't make it to the show at the theater next month.

Go get me another physician.

Noted.

What's wrong?

Qin Miuzhen is leading the troop to Lingzhou,

going after the Shen family.

You bring the army back to Lingzhou

to protect Miao.

But 2000 soldiers of the Qin family are stationed at the palace.

There are countless assassins from Empress Dowager's faction.

It's risky for you to take this trip.

Now, you even want to send me back.

Isn't this suicidal?

Don't worry. I have my own way.

Way?

What way do you have?

Why must you offer yourself up to die?

If I fail,

you can return to the martial arts world and live freely.

Isn't it better?

Based on the current situation,

death is inevitable.

I might as well kill you now.

Isn't this what you wish for?

What makes you think you can kill me?

Did you forget the bet we had upon the completion

of my training?

It was the root of all evil.

Of course I remember.

They say you're the best disciple of the academy.

I don't buy it.

I dare you to have a showdown with me.

You're childish.

Do you underestimate me

and think I'm not good enough to fight you?

I dare you to make a bet with me.

What's the bet on?

If I lose,

I'll announce it to the academy

that I'm your underling.

The same goes for you. What do you think?

It's not necessary.

If you lose,

you'll leave the mountain and protect me for three years.

Three years?

It's too long.

Five years.

You're arrogant. I won't lose.

Five years.

I'm toast.

It's only a month left

for the five-year engagement.

I'd like to ask you for one last favor.

Protect Miao.

They're your wife and kid. Protect them yourself.

I only promised

to keep you safe.

If you dare die in the capital,

I'll leave right away.

In the past five years,

I've taken advantage of the bet

to pick on you and deduct your wages.

What now?

As it comes to this point,

are you concerned about me?

You're ridiculous.

I'm concerned about you?

I just don't want to take care of those two burdens.

I tell you what.

They're your wife and kid.

Come back alive and protect them yourself.

Furthermore,

if you die,

I'll immediately tell Shen Miao

that you've never loved her

and everything is a scheme.

And I'll let her take Xiao away

and remarry

Third Master Song.

To make you turn

in your grave.

If it's the case,

it might be a good thing.

What are you talking about?

Everything is unpredictable on this trip.

If I fail,

Xiao and the Shen family will be killed

by the Qin family because of me.

By then,

I need you to do me a favor.

I can't understand.

I won't help you.

Before the dust settles,

no matter what happens,

please don't tell Miao the truth.

If...

If I die in the capital,

you must try everything you could

to deny any connection between the Shen family and me.

Then, take Miao and Xiao to Song Xiyuan.

Pei Yanzhen, are you out of your mind?

This is the only surefire way.

By then,

Song Xiyuan will ask to marry Miao in front of Qin Zuze.

This can at least protect the Shen family.

The Shen family has 161 stores

The number is the same with what we have.

Word for word.

(How is this possible?)

(Only Dad and Pei Yanzhen know this number.)

Official Pei,
