I was hoping Jiu's love for you

You know you won't get a happy ending with that woman.

I know that.

As I remember,

Spring exam of the fifth year of Taihe Era,

you made a name for yourself in the capital with your thesis

You received praise for it.

Several Grand Secretaries are rooting for you.

It's very likely you will be a minister.

I can't let you kneel before me.

However, I think

we should uphold the rites.

Abiding by the rites is the foundation of the ruling.

It applies to the ruler and his subjects.

No one is an exception.

Yes. Well said.

Do I have the honor

to have your service?

Ruling with rites in a time of peace,

such is the way to maintain that peace.

Your Majesty.

You broke your promise.

Your Majesty.

Pei Yanzhen, you said

you'd be my aide in the Imperial Court,

that we'd remove the old-fashioned minds

and quell corruption among officers.

Why can't you

follow the will of my mother and uncle?

In the entire palace,

you're the only one I trust.

If you are banished from the capital,

what should I do, then?

I am only avoiding the Empress Dowager's attention for now.

The consort kin in the Imperial Court

is toying with power and feeding everyone their lies.

Official Qin embezzled money from the treasury.

Despite increased taxation,

the treasury is still empty.

Soldiers must live without warm clothes.

People from across the land lost their homes.

I will become your aide someday and help you regain

your power.

We'll start a new era of peace.

(I remember that night.)

(It was raining that night.)

Over the past three years, every word you've said

over a woman.

You refuse to use Jiu's connection

You risk suspicion

only to make Shen Miao happy.

If Mother questions your background,

and wants you dead,

what should I do?

Do you doubt me?

Insolence.

You and I,

A ruler must treat officers as his own.

The officers must repay the kindness with their lives.

I made you a promise.
